To change a Windrose dedicated server’s name, stop the server completely, edit the ServerName value in ServerDescription.json, save the file, and start the server again. The file location differs by build. A universally supported description setting is not established: most field references do not list one, while a separate windrose.support guide describes a Description field that may belong to another or older build.
What you can change reliably
The server name is controlled by the ServerName property in ServerDescription.json. The value is a string, so you can replace it with the name you want players to see. Windrose references agree on the edit-and-restart procedure, but they disagree about where the file is stored and how newer builds nest its properties.
A description is different. The field lists available for build 0.10.0.3 and later include identity, access, world, player-count, and connection settings, but they do not include a dedicated description property. One windrose.support page lists Description and says it allows 500 characters; that information does not match the other references and may describe an older or different configuration format. Do not assume that adding an unrecognized key will make a description appear in the server browser.
Before editing the configuration
Stop the server fully
Use your hosting control panel’s stop action, or stop the dedicated-server process on the machine where it runs. Wait until the process has exited and the console no longer reports that the world is saving. Editing while Windrose is running is unsafe because one guide reports that the server rewrites ServerDescription.json during shutdown. Your change can therefore be overwritten when the process closes.

Make a backup
Copy the entire ServerDescription.json file to a separate location before changing it. Keep the original filename and extension in the backup, such as a dated copy outside the active configuration folder. A backup gives you a way to recover from a syntax error, a reset to defaults, or an edit made in the wrong copy of the file. Do not edit the backup and then leave both files in a folder where the server might discover the wrong one.
Record the installed build
Build-level behavior is not consistent across the available references. Note the version shown by your server executable, launcher, or control panel before you edit. In particular, newer examples reportedly wrap settings inside a ServerDescription_Persistent object, whereas older examples put the properties at the top level. The build number also affects which folder is read and whether an undocumented field is ignored.
Find the file Windrose actually reads
There is no single path that applies to every Windrose installation. Check the locations below in the order that matches your server package, then confirm which copy changes when the server writes its configuration.

If more than one copy exists, stop the server, make a harmless backup, and inspect the files rather than editing all of them. The active file normally has the most recent modification time after a normal shutdown, but timestamp alone is not proof. A file can be copied by a launcher or host panel, so verify by changing only the active copy and checking the result after restart.

Change the Windrose server name
- Stop the dedicated server. Confirm that the process is no longer running and that any save operation has completed.
- Open the active
ServerDescription.json. Use a plain-text or code editor rather than a word processor. If the file is read-only, copy it to a writable location only long enough to edit it, then place the corrected file back in the original folder. - Locate
ServerName. It may be at the top level or insideServerDescription_Persistent. Edit the existing property in whichever structure your file uses; do not create a second property with the same name. - Replace only the value. Keep the property name, quotation marks, comma placement, and surrounding braces intact. For example, a top-level file may contain:

}These snippets show the location of the property, not a complete Windrose configuration. Preserve every other property already present in your file. Names can contain spaces and ordinary punctuation because the field accepts a string, but avoid control characters, unmatched quotation marks, or line breaks inside the value.
- Save the file as JSON. Keep the filename exactly
ServerDescription.json. Make sure the editor has not added a second extension such as.txt, converted straight quotes to typographic quotes, or inserted comments; comments are not valid JSON. - Start the server again. Allow the process to finish initialization before testing. If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and inspect the edited file for a missing comma, brace, or quotation mark.
- Verify from a fresh client view. Refresh the server list or reconnect after the restart. A cached listing can show the previous name briefly; use a new search or a fresh client session before deciding that the edit failed.
What to do about the server description
Why there is no universal file-based answer
The field inventories that accompany the commonly cited configuration examples list PersistentServerId, InviteCode, IsPasswordProtected, Password, ServerName, WorldIslandId, MaxPlayerCount, and connection-related properties. They do not list Description. That absence means a description key cannot be treated as a supported setting for every build.

Inspect your own file without damaging it
- Stop the server and back up the active JSON file.
- Search the file for the exact case-sensitive key
Description. Also check whether the file is wrapped inServerDescription_Persistent. - If an existing
Descriptionproperty is present, change its string value without changing its nesting or data type. Keep the value within the limit documented for your installed build; the only limit found in the available material is the unconfirmed 500-character figure. - If no such property exists, do not add one merely because another guide shows it. An unknown key may be ignored, removed during shutdown, or associated with a different release. Consult the documentation for your build or its configuration interface for a supported description mechanism.
There may be no file-based description field on your release. In that case, changing ServerName is supported by the shared references, while a description can only be changed if your particular build exposes another documented setting. Do not report a successful description change solely because the JSON saved without an error; verify that players can actually see it.
Important fields you should leave alone or validate
Changing a name is low risk when you touch only ServerName. Other properties in the same file control identity, access, world selection, capacity, and networking. The following reference is useful when checking that your edit did not alter an unrelated setting.

Version and networking differences to expect
Top-level versus nested JSON
Do not move properties between structures to make examples match. If your installation has a top-level ServerName, edit that property. If it has a ServerDescription_Persistent object, edit the property inside that object. Moving the key can cause Windrose to ignore it even when the resulting JSON remains syntactically valid.

The available references disagree about supported capacity: one reports support up to eight players, while another describes four as the Early Access recommendation and ten as the maximum. Those numbers are not a reason to change MaxPlayerCount while renaming. Confirm the limit against the documentation for your exact build and hosting arrangement.

Ports and direct connections
One source says Windrose normally assigns ports through NAT punch-through, so fixed ports are generally not set manually. Other references describe direct-connection properties, including a default DirectConnectionServerPort of 7777 and a default DirectConnectionProxyAddress of 0.0.0.0. This apparent conflict is likely build- or mode-dependent. A name change does not require any port change; leave networking settings untouched unless you are following instructions specific to your release.
Troubleshooting
The old name returns after shutdown
The most likely causes are editing while the server was still running, editing a non-active copy, or saving a file with a different extension. Stop the server, compare the copies in the server root, R5, and SavedConfig, and check which one receives a new modification time after a clean shutdown. Restore your backup if the server has rewritten the file, then edit the copy that the build actually reads.
The server will not start after the edit
Restore the backup first so the world can come online. Then compare the edited file with the backup for a missing comma, brace, or quote. JSON does not permit comments or trailing commas in many parsers. Reapply only the ServerName value in a plain-text editor and save it again. Startup problems can also cause fields to reset to defaults, so avoid changing several settings at once.

Make sure the server completed a full restart, then refresh the client’s server list or reconnect. If a fresh client still sees the old name, verify that you edited the file used by the running build rather than a template, backup, or inactive installation. Check the nesting of ServerName and confirm that the file was saved as ServerDescription.json.

A description key saves but has no visible effect
An unrecognized property can be accepted by a text editor without being used by Windrose. Compare your file with the field list for the installed build and remove an unsupported key if the server rewrites or rejects it. The conflicting 500-character description guidance may apply to another release or interface, so visibility in the server browser—not merely successful saving—is the meaningful test.
The file is missing from every listed folder
Confirm that you are looking at the dedicated-server installation rather than a client installation or an empty data directory. Start the server once, let it initialize, stop it cleanly, and search again for the exact filename. If your host uses a managed panel, use its file browser or ask which directory is mounted as the server’s persistent data location; do not create a new configuration file until you know which path the process reads.
Safe rename checklist
- Record the Windrose build and the server’s current configuration location.
- Stop the server completely and wait for shutdown saves to finish.
- Back up the active
ServerDescription.json. - Edit only the existing
ServerNamestring, preserving its nesting. - Keep
PersistentServerId, access settings, world identifiers, capacity, and network values unchanged. - Save valid JSON with the exact filename and extension.
- Restart the server and refresh a client listing before judging the result.
- Treat
Descriptionas build-specific unless your own configuration or documentation confirms it.
Bottom line
For a Windrose dedicated server, rename the server by editing ServerName in the active ServerDescription.json while the server is stopped, then restart it. Because file paths, JSON nesting, and the existence of a description field vary by build, verify the active location and structure first. Never change PersistentServerId, and do not add a Description key unless your installed version explicitly supports it.
