Change a V Rising server’s public name and description by editing ServerHostSettings.json, then restarting the server. The Name value is the server-browser label; Description appears in the server details panel and is printed in chat when a player connects.
Where V Rising stores the name and description
V Rising keeps these values in a JSON configuration file named ServerHostSettings.json. After the server has run for the first time, the default configuration files are generated under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. The same file may also be copied into a persistent save-data/Settings/ directory, particularly on managed hosting panels where files in the installation directory can be replaced during an update.
The exact folder shown by a host depends on its panel and deployment method. If you cannot find the file in the installation directory, use the panel’s file manager and search for ServerHostSettings.json. The active copy is commonly under save-data/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json, but treat that as a hosting convention rather than a universal V Rising rule.

Changing the description does not rename the entry, and changing the name does not alter the connection-time message. Edit both properties if you want the browser listing and the in-game introduction to match.

Before you edit the file
Stop the server or clear the player list
Shut the server down cleanly before modifying the JSON file. If your setup cannot be stopped immediately, make sure nobody is connected and wait for any save operation to finish. Editing a live configuration can leave connected players with inconsistent files and, according to hosting guidance, may risk corruption for them.
Make a backup
Copy the existing ServerHostSettings.json to a separate location before changing it. A backup lets you restore the previous name, description, ports and other settings if the file is accidentally overwritten or becomes invalid. Keep the backup outside the folder that your host automatically synchronizes or replaces.
Use a plain-text editor
Open the file in a code or plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that inserts smart quotation marks or rich-text formatting. JSON requires ordinary double quotes, braces and commas; a typographic quote can prevent the server from reading the entire file.
Step-by-step: change the V Rising server name and description
- Stop the V Rising server. Use the server console, service manager or hosting panel’s Stop control. Confirm the process is no longer running before saving the configuration.
- Open the active settings folder. Start with
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. For a managed host, check the panel’s persistentsave-data/Settings/directory and follow the host’s documented active-file path. - Open
ServerHostSettings.json. If more than one copy exists, identify the one used by the launch profile or persistent save directory. Editing an unused copy will have no visible effect. - Find the existing properties. Look for
"Name"and"Description". Preserve the capitalization of the property names; use the existing structure instead of creating a second pair of properties elsewhere in the file. - Replace only the text between the quotes. For example:

}- Keep valid JSON syntax. Leave the comma after
"Name"when another property follows it. Do not add a trailing comma after the final property. If your file contains many other settings, change only the two values and leave the rest untouched. - Save the file in place. Retain the
.jsonextension and plain-text format. A file accidentally saved asServerHostSettings.json.txtwill not be loaded as the server configuration. - Restart the server. Stunlock’s 1.0.x instructions state that a restart is required after changing any configuration file. Start the server only after the edited file has been saved.
- Verify the result in the browser. Refresh the server list, search for the new name and select the entry. Check the details panel for the description. Connect with a test account, if available, and confirm that the description is printed in chat.
Editing an existing file safely
Preserve the surrounding settings
ServerHostSettings.json can contain ports, server visibility options and other host settings in addition to the two display fields. Do not replace the whole file with the short example unless you have deliberately backed up and recreated every setting your server needs. The safest edit is a surgical replacement of the existing Name and Description strings.
Handle quotation marks and line breaks
Text values are enclosed in JSON double quotes. If your description needs a literal double quote, escape it as ". A line break should be represented with n rather than by pressing Enter inside the quoted value. If you do not need special formatting, keep the description to one ordinary line; it is easier to read in the browser and less likely to produce a syntax error.

Check the file after saving
Before restarting, scan for balanced braces and quotes. A missing quote, an extra comma or an accidental deletion can make the configuration unreadable. If the server fails to start after the edit, restore the backup first, confirm that the server runs, and then reapply the change more carefully.
Using a hosting panel
Panels differ in their labels, but the underlying process is the same. Open the panel’s file manager, navigate to the persistent settings directory, stop the server, edit ServerHostSettings.json, save it, and use the panel’s Restart or Start control. Some panels expose a text editor directly; others require downloading the file, editing it locally and uploading it again.
- Use the panel’s own Stop action rather than killing the process while it is writing a save.
- Check whether the panel has separate “configuration,” “runtime,” or “save-data” folders. The active file is the one referenced by the server’s launch profile.
- If the panel offers an automatic configuration editor, compare its result with the JSON file after saving. A panel may rewrite formatting or maintain a second copy.
- Restart after uploading or saving. A running process normally keeps its previous configuration in memory.
- After an update, confirm that the edited file still exists in the persistent folder. A guide’s recommendation to copy settings into
save-data/Settingsis intended to help changes survive updates, but the exact behavior is host-specific.
When the new name does not appear
1. You edited the wrong copy
Multiple files with the same name are common after moving a server or installing an update. Compare modification times, inspect the launch profile and check the host’s persistent directory. If the server keeps reverting to the previous text, the process is probably reading a different copy than the one you edited.
2. The server was not restarted
Refreshing the browser alone does not reload a configuration file. Stop and start the server, then refresh the server list. A full restart is required for configuration changes according to the official 1.0.x instructions.
3. A launch argument is overriding the file
V Rising supports command-line overrides for these values. The documented options include -serverName, -description <description> and the environment variable VR_DESCRIPTION=<description>. If a launch script, service definition or panel startup field supplies one of these, it can take precedence over the JSON value. Remove or update the override, then restart.

Search the startup command for the literal strings -serverName, -description and VR_DESCRIPTION. On a panel, inspect advanced launch parameters or environment-variable fields. Do not add an override merely to troubleshoot unless you understand which source your host prioritizes; otherwise you can create two competing values.
4. The browser is showing cached data
Server lists can take time to refresh. Close and reopen the server browser, clear any search filter and select the entry again. Verify the details panel and connection-time chat rather than relying only on a previously displayed list row.
5. The JSON is invalid
If both the old and new values disappear, or the server reports a configuration error, restore the backup and test the server. Then change one field at a time, keeping the quotation marks and commas exactly as required by JSON. A plain-text JSON validator can identify a missing quote or brace, but do not paste private server credentials or other sensitive settings into an online service.
When the description is missing or truncated
Confirm that the property is named exactly
The expected property is "Description" with a capital D. A differently cased key, such as "description", may not be recognized. Edit the existing key instead of adding a second variant.
Keep the value a string
Use quoted text, not a number, Boolean or nested object. This is valid:

"Description": "Events on weekends; read the rules before joining."Do not remove the quotes or place an unescaped double quote inside the sentence. If the text contains a colon, semicolon or apostrophe, those characters are normally safe inside the quoted value.
Check both display locations
The description is intended to appear in the selected-entry details panel and in chat when connecting. If it is visible in one location but not the other, record the game build, server type and exact text, then check whether the behavior is version-specific. The available official reference is for the 1.0.x branch, and a current 2026 build was not independently verified against it.

Make the name identifiable
Use a short name that distinguishes the server from similarly configured entries. Include a community or event identifier only if it is meaningful to your players. Avoid pretending that a name changes gameplay rules: the browser label is descriptive, while actual rules remain in the server configuration and your community guidance.

Put practical information in the description
Use the description for details a player can act on, such as the server’s role-playing focus, conduct expectations or where to read rules. The example Role playing server. Be nice. demonstrates the field’s purpose without changing any gameplay setting. Keep the first sentence useful on its own because players may see it while deciding whether to connect.
Do not expose private information
Descriptions are public-facing. Do not include administrator passwords, private addresses, moderation notes or information that should be restricted to staff. If you need to communicate a secret, use a private channel rather than the server listing.

Update-resistant setup
A server installation can contain generated defaults as well as persistent save data. If an update replaces files under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/, a name edited there may revert. Hosting guidance commonly recommends keeping the working settings in save-data/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json, but the correct location depends on how the server is launched.
- Stop the server and back up the current working configuration.
- Identify which settings directory the launch command actually uses.
- Keep the edited file in the host’s persistent location, if one is provided.
- After an update, compare the active file with your backup before starting the server.
- Start the server and verify the browser name and description again.
If the host provides no persistent directory, keep a dated local backup and reapply the two display values after an update. Do not assume that a file surviving on disk means the running process is reading it; the launch configuration remains authoritative.

Editing JSON is the normal method, but launch-time values can override it. The documented forms are:
-serverName "My V Rising Server"
-description "Role playing server. Be nice."
VR_DESCRIPTION="Role playing server. Be nice."The exact quoting and placement depend on your operating system, service manager or hosting panel. The important diagnostic point is the precedence: if a launch script supplies a name or description, changing the file alone may not change what players see. Review the complete startup configuration, remove stale duplicate values and restart after making one source authoritative.
Do not treat these examples as a universal ready-to-paste command. A panel may require the flags in a dedicated launch-arguments field, while a service may define the environment variable separately. Follow the syntax required by your host and preserve any existing executable path or required arguments.
Version and platform qualifications
The official configuration reference available for this procedure is the 1.0.x branch. The core file and property names are also described by the V Rising community wiki and hosting guides, but those sources are older than the 2026 date of this article. No separate 2026-specific change to the name or description fields has been established here.
If the current game build presents different labels, stores settings elsewhere or ignores the documented properties, treat that as a version or deployment question. Record the build number, whether the server is self-hosted or panel-managed, the path you edited and any launch overrides. That information will identify whether the issue is a changed schema, an inactive file or a startup argument.
