To change a text thread’s background, open it in Samsung Messages, tap the three-dot More options menu, then choose Customize wallpaper or Customize chat room. You can pick a Gallery image or a background color; some devices also offer bubble opacity and text-contrast controls.
Change the background for one conversation

Open Samsung Messages and select the conversation you want to customize.

Tap More options, shown as three vertical dots.

Tap Customize wallpaper or Customize chat room. Samsung documents both labels, and the wording can vary by device.

Choose the Gallery icon to select an image, or choose a color for a plain background.

If your device shows them, adjust bubble opacity or text contrast, then apply your choice.
Samsung describes this as a conversation-level customization. Its support instructions do not say that changing the background changes what the recipient sees. The availability of individual controls depends on the device; Samsung does not provide a model-by-model compatibility list in its Samsung Messages instructions.

Conversation background or device-wide appearance?

Check which messaging app is open
Samsung Messages and Google Messages are separate apps. The steps above apply to Samsung Messages and should not be assumed to match Google Messages menus. Samsung says Google Messages may come preinstalled on select Galaxy devices and is available on Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 8.0 or later. To use it for texting and chat, it must be set as the default messaging app. Samsung’s Google Messages setup guide explains the app distinction and setup; the cited Samsung pages do not establish a Google Messages wallpaper path.

If “Customize wallpaper” is missing

Confirm that you opened Samsung Messages rather than Google Messages.

Open a conversation and check its three-dot More options menu for either Customize wallpaper or Customize chat room.

If neither label appears, device and app differences may account for the missing control. Samsung’s guidance does not identify every supported model, region, carrier, or software version, so there is no established universal workaround. Check current support information for your specific device.
