On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, choose a tone, and go back to apply it. You can also add a locally stored audio file or set a different ringtone for an individual contact. Menu labels and available options vary by model, carrier, country, and Android or One UI version.
Change the default ringtone on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
- Preview the available tones and tap the one you want.
- Go back to leave the ringtone screen and apply your selection.
Samsung says the built-in ringtone list can vary by carrier. On a dual-SIM phone, you may be asked to choose SIM 1 or SIM 2 before selecting a tone; the choice applies to the selected SIM. The precise options depend on your device and software. Samsung UK’s ringtone guide covers SIM selection and default tones.
Choose a built-in tone or add your own audio file

Add a custom ringtone
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
- Tap Add or the + icon. If prompted, allow access to audio files.
- Choose the audio file stored on your phone. If you do not see it in Tracks, check Folders.
- If shown, turn on Play selected highlights only to use a portion of the track.
- Tap Done, then go back to apply the ringtone.
Samsung US Support says, “You must have physical song files downloaded on your device in order to set one as a ringtone.” The documented workflow does not let you select a track directly from a streaming service; a streaming subscription or an offline playback option does not itself make the track selectable as a local ringtone file. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats in its guidance and says an M4A file needs conversion to one of those formats. Treat that as UK support guidance, not a guarantee for every Galaxy model or region. Samsung UK’s instructions also explain adding a local file.

Set a different ringtone for one contact
Samsung’s contact menus differ across devices and software versions. Use the sequence that appears on your phone:
- One interface: Open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit > View more > Ringtone.
- Another interface: Open the contact, tap More > Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone.
Select a built-in tone or add an eligible local audio file, return to the contact, and tap Save. The current US guide documents the More menu, while Samsung UK and Hong Kong show the Edit route: US instructions, UK instructions, and Hong Kong instructions.

Samsung US says a contact stored only on the SIM cannot receive a custom ringtone. Contact-specific setup can also depend on the phone’s software and where the contact is stored.

A call ringtone is not the same setting as general notification sounds. To change the latter, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound. Sound mode is another separate control: choosing a ringtone does not by itself switch a phone from vibrate or mute to audible ringing. Samsung’s US support instructions describe special handling for contact ring behavior in vibrate or mute mode.

- You cannot find the same menu: Look under Settings > Sounds and vibration, then follow the labels visible on your phone. Samsung notes that device and software differences can change the instructions.
- Your audio file is not listed: Confirm it is stored on the phone, then check Folders as well as Tracks. A streamed track is not selectable through the documented workflow.
- The file will not work: Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC; its guide says M4A needs conversion. Format support may differ by device or region.
- You cannot assign a contact tone: Check that the contact is not stored only on the SIM, then try the menu sequence available in your Contacts app.
- You still do not hear the selected ringtone: Check whether the phone is in vibrate or mute mode and review the relevant sound-mode settings.
