Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Change all three Rust server-listing fields with the server.description, server.headerimage and server.url convars. Put them in the server identity’s cfg/server.cfg, then run server.readcfg from the server console; alternatively, provide them as +server.* startup parameters.
The header must be a publicly reachable PNG URL. A description can contain line breaks represented by n, and an empty description is restored with server.description "".

Which Rust settings control the server listing?
Rust exposes the listing information as server convars. The three settings in this guide affect different parts of the public server entry:

The Facepunch server-creation documentation also shows these values as startup parameters, including +server.url and +server.headerimage. Configuration-file syntax is documented in hosting guides such as Tempest’s Rust listing guide and low.ms’s server-settings guide.

Before you edit anything
Make sure you are changing the configuration for the correct server identity. A Rust installation can contain more than one identity, and each identity has its own configuration directory. The server.cfg file belongs in that identity’s cfg folder, as described by Physgun’s server.cfg instructions.
- Keep a copy of the current file before editing it. This makes it easy to restore a known-good version if a quote or URL is mistyped.
- Use plain text for the file. Do not add Markdown, HTML tags, or smart quotation marks inside a convar value.
- Decide whether the setting will be managed in
server.cfgor in the startup command. If both define the same convar, the value applied last can be the one players see, so keep one authoritative copy where possible. - Have console or control-panel access available. A file edit alone does not load the new values into a running server.
Set the description, header image and URL in server.cfg
Open the server.cfg file in the identity’s cfg directory and add one setting per line. A complete example is:
server.hostname "My Rust Server"
server.description "Welcome to our community!nRules: play fair and build responsibly."
server.headerimage "https://example.com/header.png"
server.logoimage "https://example.com/logo.png"
server.url "https://example.com"server.hostname and server.logoimage are shown here only to provide context for a normal server configuration. The three fields relevant to this guide are the description, header image and URL lines. If you do not need a logo, omit the server.logoimage line.
Use quotes consistently
Quotes keep spaces and punctuation inside one value. The opening and closing double quote must be present on the same line unless the convar’s syntax specifically supports another form. A missing quote can cause the remainder of a line to be parsed incorrectly, so check paired quotes before loading the file.
Add multiple description lines
Place the two characters n in the quoted description wherever a line break should appear:

server.description "EU servernWipes on the first ThursdaynDiscord: example.com"This escaped-newline form is described in a Steam discussion about Rust server-list settings. Do not press Enter in the middle of a quoted value unless you have confirmed that your particular configuration interface preserves it correctly; a literal line break can turn one setting into malformed lines.

To remove the description rather than replace it, set an empty quoted value:
server.description ""This clearing syntax is also documented by Corrosion Hour’s Rust server-description guide. Delete or comment out an old conflicting line if the same convar appears elsewhere in the file.
Apply the file without restarting the server
Rust does not automatically reread server.cfg merely because the file changed. After saving the file, connect to the server console and run:
server.readcfg- Save the edited file in the correct identity’s
cfgfolder. - Open the live Rust server console, not a client chat window.
- Enter
server.readcfgexactly and submit it. - Allow the server browser time to refresh, then inspect the listing from a client.
The need to run this command after each file edit is noted in the low.ms settings guide and the Tempest instructions. If you edit the file again later, run server.readcfg again; saving the file does not apply subsequent changes by itself.

Set the values as startup parameters instead
If your host or launch script defines the server command, the same convars can be supplied when the process starts. The Facepunch wiki shows the URL and header image in this form:
+server.url "https://example.com" +server.headerimage "https://example.com/header.png"You can include the description as another startup parameter:
+server.description "Welcome!nRules: play fair."The exact location of these arguments depends on the host’s startup-command editor or your own launch script. Preserve the plus sign, convar name, quoted value, and escaped n characters. If a control panel automatically generates a command line from its fields, do not also maintain a contradictory value in server.cfg without checking which one is applied at startup.
Startup parameters are useful when you want every fresh process to receive the same values. The configuration file is convenient when you want to edit listing text without changing a longer launch command. Whichever method you choose, verify the active value with the server’s convar tools and keep the configuration in one place.

Use a public PNG URL
The image URL must be reachable by players’ clients, not only by the server machine or people logged in to a private dashboard. The URL should point directly to a PNG file rather than to an HTML page, login screen, or expiring private-download link. The Steam discussion cited above and Respawn Host’s Rust configuration reference both identify PNG format and public reachability as requirements.

- Use the full URL, for example
https://example.com/header.png. - Check that the address can be opened without authentication or a session cookie.
- Confirm that the response is the image itself, not a web page that embeds it.
- Keep the filename and path accurate; a one-character error produces a broken image.
Do not rely on an old fixed dimension
A 512×256 header size is quoted in a 2015 Oxide forum post. That post is old, so treat the dimension as historical guidance rather than a current guaranteed requirement. The current evidence establishes PNG format and public access, but it does not establish a current mandatory pixel size. If your host or current Rust documentation specifies a different size, follow that newer instruction.
Check the image independently
Before blaming the server configuration, paste the exact image URL into a private browser window or another network. If it redirects to a login page, requires a token that expires, or displays an error, Rust clients will not be able to use it reliably. Replace the URL with a stable public PNG, save the convar, and run server.readcfg.
How the URL appears to players
server.url is intended to appear as a button in the server browser that links to the operator’s site, according to the Facepunch wiki. Set the complete destination, including the protocol:
server.url "https://example.com"Use a page that is publicly accessible to the people you expect to join. If the button is absent, first confirm that the active convar contains the value you intended, that you ran server.readcfg after editing, and that the listing has refreshed. A URL that redirects, is unavailable, or was entered without its protocol may not provide a useful destination even when the convar itself is present.
Verify the active values
When a change does not appear, separate configuration loading from server-browser caching or display issues. Check each item in this order:

- Open the exact
server.cfgbelonging to the running server identity. - Read the lines character by character:
server.description,server.headerimage, andserver.urlmust be spelled correctly. - Confirm that each value is enclosed in matching double quotes.
- Run
server.readcfgin the live server console. - Use the in-game
convarscommand or the current Rust documentation to verify the convar names and inspect their active values. The available syntax can change, so consult the current Facepunch documentation when the server reports unfamiliar behavior. - Inspect the listing again from a client after the server has had time to update.
This process tells you whether the problem is a file-location mistake, a parsing error, an unapplied edit, or an external image/website problem.
Troubleshooting common failures

A safe update workflow for administrators
Use this sequence whenever you change branding or community information:

- Copy the current
server.cfgto a backup location. - Write the new description, image URL, and website URL as separate, quoted lines.
- Check the image and website URLs outside the game, without relying on an authenticated browser session.
- Save the file in the running identity’s
cfgdirectory. - Run
server.readcfgfrom the server console. - Inspect the active convars with the server’s convar facility if the result is not as expected.
- View the server from a client and verify the line breaks, image, and URL button independently.
- Record whether the values are also present in a startup command, so a later restart does not silently replace them.
This workflow avoids the two most common administrative mistakes: editing a file Rust is not using and assuming that saving the file automatically changes a running process.
