To change the face directly on a Pixel Watch, touch and hold the current face, swipe left or right through the available faces, and tap the one you want. To alter its colors, styles, or information widgets before applying it, tap Edit when that option appears. From your phone, open the Pixel Watch app, tap Watch faces, then choose Use on watch or Edit. Google’s current instructions are in Pixel Watch Help.

Complications are the small areas that show information in addition to the time, such as step count or weather. The exact slots and choices depend on the face you selected. Weather has an extra requirement: Pixel Weather complications work only on Pixel Watches running Wear OS 6 or newer, and availability can vary by country and language.

Choose the fastest way to change the face

You can manage faces from the watch itself or from the paired phone. The watch is quickest when you already know which face you want. The phone app is more convenient when you want to browse a larger collection, compare styles, or edit several settings while looking at a bigger screen.

What appears in the carousel is not a universal catalog. The selected face determines which colors, styles, layouts, and complication positions are offered, so two faces can expose very different controls.

Before you start

Have the Pixel Watch paired with the phone you normally use for setup. If you are working from the watch, make sure the display is awake and that you can see the current face. If you are working from the phone, open the Pixel Watch app rather than Google Photos or another watch utility; the face browser and the Use on watch action are in the Pixel Watch app.

It also helps to decide whether you are changing only the face or also its information. A face switch is a two-step browse-and-tap action. Customization adds an edit stage in which you inspect the styles and layouts that belong to that particular face. If a control is not shown, do not assume it is hidden behind a universal menu: Google exposes controls according to the selected face.

Change the face on your Pixel Watch

  1. Wake the display and touch and hold the current watch face. Keep holding until the face-selection view opens.
  2. Swipe left or right. Each swipe moves through the faces currently available on the watch.
  3. Tap the face you want to use. The watch applies it and returns to the normal time view.

If the face offers an Edit option, use it before the final selection when you want to change its appearance or complications. If no edit control is shown for a particular face, that face does not expose additional options in the current selection view; choose another face or use the phone app to check the available controls.

There is no need to recreate a face each time you change your mind. Leave several faces available and switch among them from the hold-and-swipe view. This is useful when one arrangement is optimized for a quick time check and another reserves positions for information you need during a particular routine.

Change or edit a face in the Pixel Watch phone app

  1. Open the Pixel Watch app on the phone paired with your watch.
  2. Tap Watch faces.
  3. Swipe left or right to browse. Select a face to see its available actions.
  4. Tap Use on watch to apply the face immediately, or tap Edit to customize it first.

The app’s preview helps you see how a color or layout will look before it is sent to the watch. The controls are face-specific: the app does not promise that every face has the same number of complication slots or the same style choices.

Use the app when the watch’s smaller display makes comparing alternatives awkward. Browse first, then open Edit only after selecting a face whose basic design suits your needs. If you edit a face and then decide the layout is unsuitable, return to Watch faces and choose another rather than trying to force the same arrangement onto every design.

Customize colors, styles, and complication layouts

Editing is done from the face-selection interface. On the watch, touch and hold the face, tap Edit, and then swipe left through the available editing pages. Google’s guidance groups these pages into styles and complication layouts; the labels and number of pages vary with the selected face.

Change the visual style

Use the style pages to choose from the colors, hands, numerals, markers, or other visual treatments that the face makes available. Select an option to preview it, then continue swiping to inspect the remaining pages. A style that looks minimal may provide fewer information areas, while a denser style may expose more positions; this is a property of that face rather than a setting shared by the whole watch.

Google Pixel Watch 5 (41mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi | Gemini Intelligence, domed display, comprehensive health and fitness tracking
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices

Review every style page before assigning widgets. Some choices change the visual balance of the face, and the complication positions shown later in the editor may be tied to the chosen design. If your priority is readability, start with the style that makes the time easiest to see, then select only the information positions you will actually use.

Set the complication layout

Swipe to the complication-layout page. Select a layout offered for that face, then tap one of its positions to choose an available information source. A complication is a widget displayed on the face, not a second app screen. Google describes the purpose this way: “Add complications if you want to display information beyond the time, like weather or step count, on the watch face.”

Because layouts differ, first decide what information must be visible at a glance and then choose a face that provides a suitable position for it. If a desired widget is absent from the picker, verify that the current face supports that type of slot; changing to another face is often the relevant fix, not repeatedly reopening the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check positions one at a time. A face can offer a prominent area and smaller areas, and the picker for each position can be different. If a layout has more positions than you need, leaving unnecessary ones unused keeps the display easier to read. Conversely, selecting a face with too few positions means you may have to switch faces when your information needs change.

Finish and apply the edit

After selecting the style and complication choices shown for the face, leave the editor or use the on-screen apply control. The watch returns to the selected face with the new appearance. In the phone app, choose Use on watch after editing when that action is shown.

Give the watch a moment to receive a change made in the phone app. If the old face remains visible, reopen Watch faces and confirm that the intended face is the one selected for use before changing other settings.

Understand what complications can and cannot do

Complications put selected information on the face so you do not have to open a separate app. Typical examples documented by Google include weather and step count. They are constrained by the face’s design: a face may offer one large position, several small positions, or a layout with no configurable positions. The editor only lists choices that are compatible with the selected position.

  • Do not assume every face has the same slots. Google provides general editing guidance, not a complete face-by-face compatibility table.
  • Choose the slot before judging the available widgets. Different positions can accept different kinds of information.
  • Expect the list to reflect current software. A missing option can be caused by the face design, watch software, app state, or a feature’s regional availability.

Complications are not interchangeable decorations. A position is part of the face’s layout, and the information sources offered for it are filtered by compatibility. Therefore, the right order is to select a face, select its layout, select a position, and only then evaluate the list of widgets. This order prevents you from mistaking a layout limitation for a missing app.

Add a weather complication safely

Weather is a useful example of a complication with software and availability conditions. Google’s weather documentation says Pixel Weather is compatible only with Pixel Watches running Wear OS 6 or newer. It also notes that Pixel Weather and some related features may not be available in every country or language. See Google’s Pixel Weather help page for the current qualification.

  1. Confirm that the watch is running Wear OS 6 or newer before treating a missing weather option as an editor problem.
  2. Open the face editor and select a face and layout that include a compatible complication position.
  3. Tap the position and look for Weather or UV Index when those options are offered.
  4. If neither appears, check the country and language availability of Pixel Weather and update the watch and phone software before trying a different face.

A weather complication can therefore be absent for more than one reason. A face may not support the needed slot, the watch may be below Wear OS 6, or the service may not be offered for the watch’s country or language.

Do not use the absence of Weather as proof that the face editor is malfunctioning. Test the same watch with another face that offers a suitable position, then check the operating-system and regional conditions. This isolates a face limitation from a Pixel Weather eligibility issue.

Use the Photos face

Google’s Photos face can use up to 30 photos from a personal album. The limit is Google’s stated maximum for this face; it is not a promise that every other face accepts photos.

Prepare the required apps

Google advises having current versions of the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and the watch. Updating matters when the Photos face or its album controls do not appear. Install available updates, reopen the Pixel Watch app, and check the face list again.

Keep the phone and watch versions current before troubleshooting the album itself. A missing Photos control can be an app-state problem rather than an indication that the face has been removed. After updating, return to the face browser instead of relying on an earlier screen that may not have refreshed.

Select photos from the phone

  1. Open the Pixel Watch app and tap Watch faces.
  2. Browse to the Photos face.
  3. Open its editing controls and select the personal album or photos offered by the app.
  4. Keep the selection at or below Google’s 30-photo maximum, save the edit, and choose Use on watch when shown.

Select photos from the watch

  1. Touch and hold the current face and browse to the Photos face.
  2. Choose the face’s edit option.
  3. Follow the photo-selection controls displayed for that face, using photos from the personal album available to the watch.
  4. Apply the face when the editor finishes.

The exact controls can change with the current app and watch software. If Photos or the relevant selection control is missing, update the Pixel Watch app and Google Photos on the phone and watch, then try the setup again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 30-photo maximum applies to the Photos face described by Google. If you need a different image arrangement, first check what the selected face actually offers rather than assuming that the Photos workflow applies to it.

Troubleshoot a missing face, edit button, or complication

Symptom Likely explanation What to try
The face is not in the carousel It has not been added to the available faces, or the app and watch are out of sync Open the Pixel Watch app, tap Watch faces, browse there, and use Use on watch for the face you want
No Edit option appears The selected face may expose no editable controls in that context Try another face, or select the same face in the phone app and check whether Edit is offered
A desired slot is missing The face’s layout does not include that position Swipe through the face’s available layouts or choose a different face
A widget is not listed The chosen position may not support it, or the feature may have software or regional requirements Try another position and face; for weather, verify Wear OS 6 or newer and country/language availability
Photos controls are missing The Pixel Watch app or Google Photos may be outdated Update the relevant apps on the phone and watch, reopen the editor, and check the Photos face again

Use a controlled sequence when troubleshooting: select a different layout on the same face, try another face, check the phone and watch app versions, and then investigate feature-specific requirements. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the original problem was a design restriction or a software issue.

Pick a face by the information you need

Start with the information you want visible without opening an app. If the priority is only the time, a simple face can reduce visual clutter. If you need steps, weather, or another widget, inspect the face’s complication layouts before committing to its colors. A face with attractive colors but no compatible position for your required widget will force a second change.

For a clean, glanceable display

Choose a style with the fewest elements that still gives you readable numerals or hands. During editing, skip layouts that add positions you will not use. This keeps the face focused on the time.

For information density

Choose a face that offers several positions and then assign only the complications you check regularly. Verify each position individually because a large central area and a small corner area may not accept the same choices.

For changing routines

Keep several faces available instead of rebuilding one face repeatedly. For example, one face can emphasize steps, while another can reserve a position for weather. Switch by touching and holding the current face and tapping the alternative when your routine changes.

The best face is therefore a combination of design and available positions. Begin with the required information, confirm that the face supplies compatible slots, and only then fine-tune colors or other visual choices. This avoids spending time perfecting a style that cannot display the complication you need.

Keep the watch and phone experience consistent

Use the phone app when you want to make a deliberate change and the watch when you need a quick switch. After applying a face from the phone, give the watch a moment to receive the selection before judging whether the change worked. If the watch still shows the old face, reopen Watch faces in the Pixel Watch app and confirm that the intended face is the one marked for use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When diagnosing a missing option, isolate one variable at a time: first check the selected face’s layouts, then the current watch and app software, and finally any service-specific requirement such as the Wear OS 6 minimum for Pixel Weather. This avoids treating a design limitation as a pairing or update failure.

What the official guidance does not specify

Google’s help pages explain the general selection and editing paths, the Photos face’s 30-photo maximum, and the Wear OS and availability requirement for Pixel Weather. They do not list every face, every complication slot, or every model-and-software combination. Consequently, the controls visible on your watch can legitimately differ from screenshots or instructions for another face or software version. Use the options presented for the face currently selected as the authoritative list for that device.

That variation is normal rather than evidence that a step was skipped. A face can expose different pages, positions, or widget choices from another face, and software updates can change what is presented. When an instruction says to choose an option “when shown,” treat that qualification literally: the option is conditional, not guaranteed on every Pixel Watch configuration.

A concise repeatable workflow

  1. Touch and hold the current face.
  2. Browse to a face that matches the information you need.
  3. Tap Edit when available.
  4. Swipe through the offered styles and complication layouts.
  5. Assign widgets only to positions that support them.
  6. Apply the face, or use the Pixel Watch app’s Use on watch action.
  7. If an option is missing, check face compatibility first, then app and watch updates, and finally feature-specific requirements.
