Change PHP settings in your hosting control panel first. In cPanel, open Software → MultiPHP INI Editor, select the WordPress domain, edit the directive, and click Apply. In Plesk, open the domain’s PHP Settings page. If your host exposes neither tool, use only the file-based override it documents—typically a domain-level php.ini, permitted .htaccess directives, or WordPress constants in wp-config.php. Then verify the effective value in WordPress before retrying the failed operation.
Identify the setting and the site that are actually running
Do not start by changing a random value in wp-config.php. First identify the exact symptom, the active PHP version, and the document root for the affected WordPress installation. A host can run several domains, PHP versions, and configuration scopes on one account.

Record the current values before editing. If the host lets you select a PHP version per domain, note that version because each version can use a different configuration scope. Some providers require the change to be repeated after a PHP-version switch.

For upload-related errors, keep the limits internally consistent: memory_limit ≥ post_max_size ≥ upload_max_filesize. For example, setting a 128 MB upload limit while post_max_size is 64 MB still produces a failure, because the complete request cannot be that large.

Change a setting in cPanel
Use MultiPHP INI Editor
- Sign in to cPanel for the hosting account that contains the WordPress site.
- Open Software → MultiPHP INI Editor.
- Select the affected domain. Use the domain’s actual WordPress document root rather than another parked or addon domain.
- Choose the available configuration mode. Basic Mode exposes common options; Editor Mode exposes more of the PHP configuration.
- Locate only the directive related to the problem, such as
memory_limit,upload_max_filesize,post_max_size,max_execution_timeormax_input_time. - Enter the value using the unit accepted by the interface, such as
256Mor2G. Keep the value within the host’s allowed range. - Click Apply at the bottom of the page.
- Verify the effective value in WordPress Site Health or the diagnostic supplied by your host, then repeat the operation that failed.
The hosting provider can disable MultiPHP INI Editor or restrict individual directives. If the editor is missing, blank, or refuses a value, that is a hosting policy rather than a WordPress error. Ask support whether the domain can receive a higher limit and whether the change applies to the selected PHP version.
Upload limits in cPanel
When the error names upload_max_filesize, change all three related limits deliberately. Set upload_max_filesize to at least the size of the largest file, set post_max_size higher than that value to leave room for the request envelope and additional form data, and ensure memory_limit is no lower than post_max_size. A cPanel upload procedure reports a 2 MB default maximum upload size and documents values up to 2 GB in that procedure; your provider may impose a lower account-level cap.
Change a setting in Plesk
- Sign in to Plesk and select Websites & Domains.
- Open the affected domain.
- Choose PHP Settings.
- Find the directive in the PHP settings list and enter the required value. If Plesk shows separate common and additional settings areas, use the field corresponding to the directive you need.
- Save the page with Apply or OK, depending on the Plesk version and service-provider skin.
- Check the effective value from WordPress Site Health or the provider’s diagnostic tool.
Plesk may run PHP through PHP-FPM or another handler. The interface normally applies the change for you, but a provider can lock settings or require a service reload. If a saved value immediately reverts, contact the host and include the domain, PHP version, directive, requested value and error message.
If the panel has no PHP editor
Use only the override method your host explicitly permits. A file that works on one server can be ignored or cause a 500 error on another.

Domain-level php.ini
Some hosts let you create or edit a php.ini file in the domain’s document root. A typical file contains lines such as:
memory_limit = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 64M
post_max_size = 72M
max_execution_time = 120
max_input_time = 120Use the host’s required filename and location. PHP-FPM or a host-managed configuration may read a different file, and some providers ignore per-directory files entirely. After saving, allow the host’s stated reload or cache interval, then verify the value instead of assuming that the file was loaded.

Permitted .htaccess directives
Apache configurations sometimes allow PHP values in .htaccess, for example:
php_value memory_limit 256M
php_value upload_max_filesize 64M
php_value post_max_size 72MDo not add these lines unless the host says that this PHP handler supports them. On a server using PHP-FPM, an unsupported php_value directive can produce an internal-server error. Remove the lines through the file manager or SFTP if the site becomes unavailable, then use the supported panel or ask support.

WordPress constants in wp-config.php
WordPress can request memory for front-end and back-end requests. Add the constants before the line that says /* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M' );
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );The documented defaults are 40 MB for WP_MEMORY_LIMIT on a standard installation, 64 MB for Multisite, and 256 MB for WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT. These constants express WordPress’s request; they cannot force a higher server limit when PHP configuration prevents runtime changes. They also do not replace upload_max_filesize or post_max_size, so they will not by themselves fix an upload-size error.

Back up wp-config.php before editing, preserve its quotes and semicolons, and avoid defining the same constant twice. A syntax error in this file can take the entire site offline.
Verify that the new value is effective
- In WordPress, open Tools → Site Health → Info and expand the Server section. Review the PHP version and the values exposed there.
- Check the host’s diagnostic page if Site Health does not display the directive you changed.
- Confirm that the displayed domain and PHP version match the site you edited.
- Retry the exact upload, import, update or administrative action that failed.
A value shown by WordPress is more useful than the value you typed into a file because it confirms which configuration PHP actually loaded. If the old value remains, clear any host-provided configuration cache only according to the provider’s instructions and check for a higher-priority server setting.

Why a change appears not to work
The server cap is lower than your request
Shared hosting commonly applies server-level caps. A domain editor may display a maximum, silently clamp a larger number, or reject it. WordPress cannot override that ceiling. Ask support for the highest permitted value and whether a plan or server change is required.
You changed the wrong PHP version or domain
Changing PHP versions can select a different configuration scope. Reopen the panel, select the active domain, confirm the PHP version shown for that domain, and make the change in that scope. Repeat the edit per version when the provider requires it.
A home-directory or domain php.ini was removed
In cPanel, deleting the domain-level or home-directory php.ini resets the associated settings to defaults. Restore the file only with the syntax and location documented by the provider, then verify every value again.
The limits are inconsistent
An upload still fails when post_max_size is below upload_max_filesize, even if the individual-file limit looks large. Check the complete relationship memory_limit ≥ post_max_size ≥ upload_max_filesize. Also consider max_input_time when a slow connection cannot finish sending a large request.

The wrong problem is being solved
Increasing max_execution_time will not fix a file-size rejection, and increasing memory will not make an undersized POST request acceptable. Match the directive to the message and change the smallest necessary value. Excessively high limits can let a broken plugin consume resources or degrade a shared server.

Contact the provider when MultiPHP INI Editor or Plesk PHP Settings is unavailable, the desired value is locked, a supported file override has no effect, or the site returns a server error after the change. Send support:
- the domain and WordPress document root;
- the active PHP version and handler, if shown;
- the exact directive and requested value;
- the complete WordPress or PHP error message;
- the effective value currently reported by Site Health or the host diagnostic; and
- whether the issue affects one domain or every site in the account.
This information lets the provider distinguish a per-domain override from a server-wide cap and tell you whether PHP-FPM or another service must be reloaded. Do not request an unlimited value: specify the largest file, import or task you need to support and ask what limit the hosting environment safely permits.
