To change a Facebook video thumbnail, open the video’s edit controls in the Page or profile publishing interface and look for a thumbnail option. If it appears, you may be able to choose a frame from the video or upload a custom image. Facebook’s exact controls are not documented as a universal workflow, so the option may depend on the video format and the account interface you’re using.
Change the thumbnail on a published Facebook video

Open the Page or profile that published the video, then open the video post.

Open the post’s options menu and choose Edit post, if that option is available. Facebook’s Help Center documents this route for editing a video post’s captions, but that guidance does not confirm that every post has a thumbnail control: Facebook Help: Add or remove captions on your video on Facebook.

In the editor, look for a thumbnail section or control. If it is shown, follow the available choices to select a frame or upload an image. A third-party guide updated March 4, 2026, describes those options in a Facebook Page video upload flow; its steps are not proof that the same controls are available for every Page, account, or published video: PosterMyWall Help Center: How do I set a thumbnail for my video?.

Save the edit, then reopen the post to check whether the preview shows the image you selected.
If there is no thumbnail option in the editor, Facebook’s general post-edit instructions do not establish another universal way to replace it. Check the publishing interface for that video type rather than assuming a control shown for one format will also apply to another.

Choose a frame or upload a custom image

For a Reel, check the Reel publishing interface
Facebook’s Help Center confirms that you can upload a video from a computer as a Reel, but the cited Reel guidance does not specify a thumbnail picker. Use the controls shown in the Reel publishing or editing interface, and don’t assume that steps for an ordinary Page video post apply to a Reel: Facebook Help: Create a reel on Facebook.

If the thumbnail control is missing

Confirm that you are editing the intended Page or profile and that you have access to manage its content. Facebook distinguishes Page Facebook access from task access, but the cited access guidance does not identify the precise permission required to edit a video thumbnail: Facebook Help: Give, edit or remove Facebook Page access.

Check the editor for the specific content type. A Reel and a standard video post may not present the same controls.

Follow the options currently displayed in your account. The official Facebook pages cited here explain general video-post editing and Reel uploads, not a thumbnail-selection workflow that applies to every account.

Meta discussed testing content variants and thumbnail-related experimentation in a 2023 creator announcement. That historical announcement does not show that a testing feature or particular thumbnail editor is currently available to all users: Meta: Helping Creators Test Content and Earn Rewards.
