Yes—you can change your website’s domain while keeping the same server, hosting account, files and database. Add the new hostname to the existing web-server configuration, recreate the required DNS records, issue a TLS certificate for the new name, test the site, then redirect every old URL to its matching new URL.
Do the work in stages. Keep the old domain, DNS zone, certificate and email service active while the new domain is tested and during the DNS transition. Recursive resolvers can cache nameserver information for 24–48 hours, so an immediate shutdown can create intermittent outages.

What actually changes when you change a domain
A domain migration is not the same thing as moving a website to another server. Several independent layers are involved, and each must be updated deliberately:
- Registration: The registrar holds the domain and controls which authoritative nameservers it uses.
- DNS: The authoritative zone publishes A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and other records that direct web, mail and verification traffic.
- Web-server binding: Your server must recognize the new hostname and serve the correct document root or virtual host.
- TLS: HTTPS certificates name specific hostnames. A certificate for the old domain does not automatically cover the new one.
- Application settings: A CMS or custom application may store its base URL, canonical URL, cookie domain, asset URLs and callback addresses.
- Email and integrations: Mail routing, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, payment callbacks, API allow-lists, OAuth redirects, monitoring and analytics can all contain the old name.
Because these layers are separate, the physical origin server can remain unchanged while the public hostname changes. Hosting control panels often provide an alias, addon-domain or primary-domain operation; the labels differ, but the underlying task is the same: make the server answer for the new host.

| Layer | Migration action | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Registrar | Keep the registration where it is or update nameservers at the registrar. | Incomplete nameserver replacement can leave the domain unavailable. |
| DNS zone | Recreate web, mail, verification and subdomain records under the new name. | Missing MX, TXT or AAAA records can break email, verification or IPv6 users. |
| Web server | Add the new hostname to the existing account or virtual-host configuration. | The server may return a default site or a 404 if the host is not bound. |
| TLS | Issue a certificate containing the new apex and intended subdomains. | Browsers show certificate warnings or HTTPS redirects loop. |
| Application | Change base URLs, canonical tags, sitemaps, cookies and integrations. | Mixed content, login failures, broken images or API callbacks result. |
| Search and redirects | Send old URLs to equivalent new URLs with permanent server-side redirects. | Deep links lose traffic and search signals if everything redirects only to the home page. |
Choose a safe migration model
Decide how much you want the hosting panel to automate and how long both hostnames will coexist. A staged overlap is normally safer than an immediate replacement because it accommodates DNS caching and gives you a rollback path.
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting configuration | Add the new domain as an alias or addon | Rename the primary domain | An alias usually limits changes to hostname and document-root settings. A primary-domain rename may update associated email accounts, DNS records and document roots automatically; verify your host’s exact behavior before using it. |
| DNS authority | Keep the current DNS provider | Delegate the new domain to another authoritative provider | Keeping the provider reduces moving parts. A new provider can be useful when your architecture requires it, but all records must be recreated before delegation. |
| Redirect scope | Host-wide redirect | One-to-one URL mapping | A host-wide rule is quick but can send unrelated paths to the wrong destination. Mapping each old path to its equivalent new path best preserves deep links and search signals. |
| Cutover | Run old and new domains together | Replace the old domain immediately | Overlap allows testing, resolver caches to expire and a controlled rollback. Immediate replacement has a shorter change window but little recovery margin. |
Prepare an inventory and backup
Record every public and private dependency
Before changing settings, export or document the current DNS zone and server configuration. Include A and AAAA records for the apex and subdomains, CNAMEs, MX records, SPF, DKIM and DMARC TXT records, certificate names, CDN or WAF rules, redirects, health checks, monitoring probes and firewall allow-lists.
Search the application and deployment files for the old hostname. Look for absolute links in templates, CSS, JavaScript, image URLs, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, robots directives, RSS feeds, structured data, email templates, cron jobs, webhook endpoints, API callbacks and OAuth redirect URIs. List every third-party service that verifies ownership with a TXT record or expects a callback at the old address.
Back up before changing the base URL
Take a database backup and a copy of application files, configuration files, the current DNS zone and redirect rules. Record the current certificate, document root, PHP or runtime settings and scheduled jobs. A backup lets you restore the old hostname if an application-wide URL replacement causes unexpected redirects or login problems.
Plan the old domain’s lifetime
Keep the old registration, DNS, certificate and web-server binding active for the entire transition. Do not cancel the old domain merely because the new homepage loads. Search crawlers, bookmarked links, cached DNS answers, email senders and API clients may continue using the old name for days or longer.

Add the new domain to the existing server
- Open your hosting panel or server configuration. Find the area labeled Domains, Websites, Virtual Hosts or Server Names. Add the new apex domain and decide whether
wwwwill be an alias, a redirect or the canonical hostname. - Select the correct document root. Point the new hostname to the existing site directory if both domains should initially display the same application. If you are staging a separate copy, use a separate directory and database so testing cannot alter production data.
- Confirm host-header handling. The web server must answer requests whose Host header is the new domain. If you manage Apache, Nginx or another server directly, add the new name to the appropriate virtual-host or server block and reload the configuration.
- Check panel side effects. A primary-domain rename can update associated services such as email accounts, DNS records and document roots. An alias or addon operation may not update those services. Read the host’s confirmation screen and verify each resulting setting rather than assuming the panel handled everything.
- Test locally before public DNS changes. Use the panel’s preview feature, a temporary hosts-file entry or an internal test hostname to confirm that the application serves the expected files, database and environment. Remove temporary overrides after testing.
At this stage, the new domain can be configured on the server even though public DNS still points elsewhere. That separation lets you solve web-server and application problems before changing delegation.

Recreate the DNS zone for the new domain
Copy records intentionally, not blindly
Create a zone for the new domain at the authoritative DNS provider. Copy records that genuinely belong to the new namespace, then replace values that contain the old name. A typical web and mail set includes:
| Record | Purpose | Migration check |
|---|---|---|
| A | Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. | Use the current origin address or the address supplied by your CDN or load balancer. |
| AAAA | Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address. | Copy only if the address is valid for the same service; a stale IPv6 record can bypass the working IPv4 path. |
| CNAME | Aliases a hostname to another hostname. | Recreate subdomain aliases and verify that the target is intended for the new name. |
| MX | Specifies mail exchangers. | Preserve the provider’s exact priorities and targets. |
| TXT | Publishes SPF, DKIM, DMARC and ownership-verification data. | Copy each required record, changing domains inside the value where appropriate. |
| CAA | Restricts which certificate authorities may issue certificates. | Ensure the authority you will use for the new certificate is permitted. |
Leave the old zone intact. If the old domain remains authoritative during the overlap, its records and redirect host must continue working. Cloud-based DNS providers generally require you to add the domain to the provider first and then change nameservers at the registrar; changing nameservers without a complete zone can make the domain appear empty.
Decide how the apex and www host behave
Choose one canonical hostname, such as the bare domain or www, and make the other redirect to it. Configure the same policy for both old and new domains. Check that the apex record type is supported by your DNS provider and that a CNAME is not being placed where the provider forbids it.
Understand nameserver propagation
Amazon Route 53 documentation states that recursive resolvers commonly cache nameserver data for 24–48 hours and that replacing nameservers can take up to 48 hours to become fully visible. This is a cache behavior, not a timer you can force to zero. Different users may reach different DNS authorities during the window, so keep both configurations valid and monitor from more than one network.

Provision HTTPS for the new hostname
A certificate is valid only for the names listed in it. Request a certificate that covers the new apex and every hostname users will visit, commonly both the bare domain and www. If subdomains such as shop, api or login are public, include them explicitly or use a wildcard only when it matches your security policy.
- Complete the certificate authority’s domain-control validation using the new DNS, HTTP or email method.
- Install the certificate and intermediate chain on the existing server, load balancer or CDN that terminates TLS.
- Configure HTTP requests to redirect to HTTPS after confirming that HTTPS itself works.
- Test the certificate from a normal browser and from an external TLS checker. Confirm the hostname, expiration, chain and protocol behavior.
- Inspect representative pages for mixed-content warnings. Replace absolute HTTP asset URLs with HTTPS or relative URLs.
Do not remove the old certificate yet. The old hostname still needs a valid certificate while redirects are served; otherwise visitors and crawlers may receive a certificate warning before the redirect can run.
Update the application, email and integrations
Change application URLs carefully
Update the CMS or framework’s site URL and home URL, then regenerate caches. Change canonical links, Open Graph URLs, structured-data URLs, sitemap locations, robots directives, feed links, image and script references, and any hard-coded absolute URLs. If the application stores URLs in a database, use a tool that understands serialized data rather than an unqualified text replacement.
Cookies deserve special attention. A cookie scoped to the old domain will not automatically authenticate users on the new domain. Set the new cookie domain and test login, logout, password reset, shopping carts and administrative sessions. Keep the old cookie behavior only as long as your security policy permits.

Update external callbacks and verification
Change payment notifications, webhooks, API allow-lists, OAuth redirect URIs, SSO settings, mobile-app endpoints, monitoring checks, analytics properties and search-console verification. Reissue any third-party ownership TXT records that are tied to the hostname. A page can look perfect while a background callback still posts to the retired address.
Launch with permanent redirects
Once the new hostname, DNS, TLS and application have passed testing, publish it while the old domain continues to resolve. Configure host-level redirects on the old server or edge service. Google Search Central states: “Start the site move by configuring the server to redirect from the old URLs to the new ones.”
Use 301 or 308 for a permanent move
HTTP status 301 and 308 both communicate that a resource has moved permanently. A 301 permits the client to change the method in ways that can matter for unusual requests; a 308 preserves the method. Use the status your server and application handle reliably, and ensure the response is generated at the server or edge rather than by a fragile client-side script.
Map paths one to one
Preserve the path and query string whenever the content still exists. For example, an old article path should redirect to the corresponding new article path, not automatically to the new homepage. Create explicit exceptions for renamed, merged or deleted content and return a genuine 404 or 410 when no relevant replacement exists. Avoid redirect chains: old URL to temporary URL to new URL adds latency and can dilute signals.
Keep redirect rules narrow
Match only the old hostnames, leave the new host serving content normally, and test protocol, apex and www variants. Check that assets, API endpoints and administrative paths do not get redirected to an HTML page unexpectedly. Preserve query parameters used for campaigns or application behavior unless they are known to be unsafe.

Test before and after cutover
- Request the new apex and
wwwover HTTP and HTTPS. Confirm the intended canonical redirect and final status code. - Open representative pages: the homepage, a deep article, a form, a search result, an image-heavy page, a login flow and any transactional path.
- Check browser developer tools for mixed content, blocked scripts, failed fonts, incorrect cookie domains and console errors.
- Submit a form and verify that email, database writes and notifications arrive.
- Call every critical API and webhook from a test environment, then inspect server logs for unexpected 404, 403, 500 or redirect-loop responses.
- Query DNS from multiple recursive resolvers and from both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Confirm A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT answers.
- Send and receive test email for the new domain and verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment.
- Fetch old URLs and confirm that each returns a single permanent redirect to the matching new URL.
Run the same checks repeatedly during the first 24–48 hours. A successful test from your office network does not prove that every resolver has received the new delegation.
Protect search visibility during the move
Changing a domain changes the URL of every indexed page, so search engines need clear, consistent signals. Keep the old URLs available and redirect them permanently. Update canonical tags, internal links, XML sitemaps and structured data to the new hostname. Submit the new sitemap through your search-console property and verify both domains so you can inspect coverage and crawl errors during the transition.
Do not block the old domain with robots.txt before redirects are discovered. Do not redirect every page to the homepage, and do not combine a domain change with a large redesign unless necessary; separating major changes makes failures easier to diagnose. Google recommends monitoring traffic and logs during a site move. Watch organic landing pages, crawl activity, index coverage, redirect errors and server response codes rather than judging the migration from one day of rankings.
No universal percentage of downtime, ranking loss or success rate applies to every domain change. Results depend on DNS completeness, certificate coverage, redirect mapping, application behavior, caching and the quality of monitoring.
Monitor the overlap and retire the old configuration
Keep both domains active while access logs show that users and crawlers are reaching the new host, mail is flowing, integrations are calling the new endpoints and no important traffic is arriving only at the old host. Monitor DNS answers, TLS handshakes, redirect status codes, 404s, 5xx responses, authentication failures, email bounces and analytics hostname reports.
When the evidence supports retirement, remove old services in stages: first obsolete application references, then unused integrations, then old mailboxes or aliases after a documented retention period. Keep the old domain registered and redirecting for as long as its backlinks, bookmarks, customer communications and legal or brand obligations require. Removing the registration would prevent redirects entirely.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The new domain shows a parking page or the wrong website. | The DNS record points elsewhere, or the server does not recognize the Host header. | Verify authoritative A, AAAA and CNAME answers, then add the hostname to the correct virtual host and document root. |
| Some users see the old site and others see the new site. | Recursive resolvers have cached different nameserver or record answers. | Keep both configurations valid, check several resolvers and allow the documented 24–48-hour nameserver window to pass. |
| HTTPS displays a certificate warning. | The certificate does not include the new hostname, or the chain is incomplete. | Issue and install a certificate covering every intended hostname, including the chain, on the TLS-terminating service. |
| Redirects loop between HTTP and HTTPS. | The origin and proxy disagree about the request’s scheme. | Correct proxy protocol handling, then test each HTTP/HTTPS and apex/www combination. |
| Images or scripts fail after launch. | Hard-coded old or HTTP URLs, restrictive content-security policy or missing CORS origin. | Update asset URLs and security policies, purge caches and retest with browser developer tools. |
| Users are logged out repeatedly. | Cookies are scoped to the old domain or secure attributes are inconsistent. | Set cookies for the new hostname, verify Secure and SameSite behavior, and test every authentication flow. |
| Email stops arriving. | MX, SPF, DKIM or DMARC records were omitted or copied with the wrong domain. | Recreate provider-required records exactly, confirm propagation and inspect sending and receiving authentication results. |
| Search traffic falls sharply. | Redirects are missing, chained, blocked or mapped to irrelevant destinations; canonical and sitemap signals still point to the old host. | Repair one-to-one redirects, remove accidental crawl blocks, update canonical and sitemap data, and monitor both properties. |
| An API or webhook no longer fires. | The callback URL or allow-list still contains the old domain. | Update the third-party configuration, verify ownership and test a real signed callback. |
When a registrar transfer is involved
Moving registration to another registrar is a separate operation from changing the website domain. A registrar transfer does not automatically move DNS or hosting. If the existing nameservers continue functioning, a transfer can avoid downtime; verify the transfer’s effect on nameserver settings before approving it. Treat any registrar move as its own change window and keep the DNS zone available throughout.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- The new domain is added to the existing hosting account or virtual-host configuration.
- The new DNS zone contains verified web, mail, verification and required subdomain records.
- A and AAAA behavior is intentional, and apex and
wwwcanonicalization is documented. - A valid TLS certificate covers every public new hostname, while the old certificate remains active.
- The application base URL, canonical tags, sitemap, robots directives, cookies and absolute URLs are updated.
- Email sending and receiving work, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records published correctly.
- Third-party callbacks, OAuth redirects, analytics, monitoring and ownership verification are updated.
- Old URLs return one-to-one 301 or 308 redirects to their new equivalents.
- Representative pages, forms, logins, uploads, APIs and transactional flows pass testing.
- Both domains are monitored, backups are restorable and a rollback plan is written down.
If every item is true, you can change the domain without changing the origin server. The migration succeeds by keeping the layers separate, preparing the new hostname before switching traffic, and leaving the old domain available until DNS, users, crawlers, mail and integrations have demonstrably moved.
