You do not need to replay every World of Warcraft expansion before Midnight. For the fastest story refresher, use Blizzard’s accelerated The War Within recap, then watch the official Midnight Story So Far trailer. If you have also forgotten how modern WoW plays, complete the Returning Player Catch Up Experience first. Together, these cover the plot, characters and gameplay context that lead directly into Quel’Thalas.
The essential setup is this: Xal’atath and the Devouring Host are attacking the Sunwell, putting Silvermoon and the surrounding elven lands in danger. The crisis follows The War Within, where Xal’atath destroyed Dalaran and helped set up the possible return of the Void Lord Dimensius.
The quickest catch-up route
Choose the route that matches what you have forgotten. Blizzard offers two different tools because remembering the story and remembering the controls are separate problems.

- Play the accelerated The War Within Recap. Blizzard says it takes “just a few hours of playtime,” starts on the Isle of Dorn and carries you through the major story route to K’aresh. It includes important cinematics and follows the central characters, so it is the most efficient option when lore is your only concern.
- Use the Returning Player Catch Up Experience if you are rusty with the game. This guided sequence in the Arathi Highlands helps you relearn movement, combat, equipment and menus. It also supplies appropriate gear and points you toward the next content instead of leaving you in a high-level zone with no idea what to do.
- Watch Blizzard’s official Midnight Story So Far trailer. It is designed as a final bridge from The War Within into Midnight, highlighting Xal’atath’s deeds, Dalaran’s destruction and Dimensius’s return.
- Begin Midnight in Quel’Thalas. The opening conflict takes place around the Sunwell, with Silvermoon City and Eversong Woods threatened by Xal’atath and the Devouring Host.
This route gives you the relevant narrative without requiring a complete playthrough of Classic, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands and Dragonflight. Older expansions still have value for players who want a full historical experience, but they are not prerequisites for understanding the Midnight opening.

What happens in The War Within
The accelerated recap is useful because it follows the same geographic and narrative progression as the expansion. These are the events you need to recognize when Midnight begins.
The Radiant Song calls the heroes beneath Azeroth
The War Within opens with the Radiant Song and a crisis below Azeroth. Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore and Anduin Wrynn investigate the disturbance and become involved in a conflict that moves the Alliance and Horde’s attention away from their familiar capitals. Dalaran is relocated over Khaz Algar, placing the city and its leaders close to the new threat.
- Thrall is the former Warchief and an experienced shaman whose connection to Azeroth makes him central to the response.
- Jaina Proudmoore is a powerful mage and one of the Alliance’s principal leaders.
- Anduin Wrynn is the Alliance king, dealing with the consequences of his time in the Shadowlands and trying to reclaim his confidence as a leader.
Xal’atath turns Dalaran into a weapon
Xal’atath is the Void Harbinger and the principal antagonist connecting The War Within to Midnight. She infiltrates Dalaran and uses the Dark Heart to drain the city’s power. Khadgar is captured, and Dalaran is destroyed.

You do not need to replay every quest involving him, but you should understand that the destruction of Dalaran is both a personal loss for the heroes and a demonstration of how far Xal’atath’s plan has progressed.

The journey reaches Khaz Algar and K’aresh
The heroes’ route runs through Khaz Algar and eventually to K’aresh. Khaz Algar is the subterranean world introduced as the main setting of The War Within; K’aresh is the broken world tied to the ethereals and the Void threat. The recap uses this journey to show the expansion’s major story beats rather than asking a returning player to complete every dungeon, side quest or repeatable activity.
The Dark Heart points to a world-consuming threat
The Dark Heart is more than a device used to attack Dalaran. The Shadowguard ethereals intend to repair it and use it to restore the Void Lord Dimensius. Blizzard’s story recap presents Dimensius as a threat capable of consuming worlds, which raises the stakes from a conflict over one city or one continent to a danger for Azeroth and beyond.
That is the important connection to remember before Midnight: Xal’atath’s campaign is not finished when Dalaran falls. The Dark Heart, the ethereals’ plan and Dimensius’s possible return explain why the next expansion begins with a large-scale assault rather than a quiet political dispute.

Xal’atath and Alleria Windrunner
Xal’atath is a Void-aligned harbinger manipulating events from behind the attacks. Alleria Windrunner’s own struggle with the Void gives her a direct connection to Xal’atath and makes their conflict especially important in the transition to Midnight. Alleria is also one of the key figures involved in the defense of Quel’Thalas.

Khadgar, Anduin, Thrall and Jaina
Khadgar is the archmage lost when Dalaran is destroyed. Thrall, Jaina and Anduin are among the leaders whose investigation of the Radiant Song brings the wider faction armies into the crisis. Their roles in the recap are less about reintroducing every past relationship and more about showing who is coordinating the response to Xal’atath.
The leaders of Quel’Thalas
- Lor’themar Theron leads the blood elves and is responsible for Silvermoon’s defense.
- Lady Liadrin is a prominent blood elf paladin whose Light-based perspective is important in a battle centered on the Sunwell.
- Turalyon represents the Alliance and the Light’s Vanguard as the factions respond to the invasion.
- Sylvanas Windrunner returns from the Shadowlands during the crisis. Blizzard’s official timeline places her arrival alongside her sister and nephew; her intervention forces Xal’atath to retreat temporarily.
The Sunwell, Silvermoon and Eversong Woods
The Sunwell is the magical heart of the blood elves and the symbolic center of Quel’Thalas. Silvermoon City is the blood elven capital, while Eversong Woods surrounds it. Because the Devouring Host attacks the Sunwell, the opening of Midnight threatens both a strategic source of power and the homeland built around it.
Khaz Algar, K’aresh, the Dark Heart and Dimensius
Khaz Algar is where the investigation beneath Azeroth develops into the central War Within campaign. K’aresh is the damaged world connected to the ethereals. The Dark Heart is the artifact used to drain Dalaran and targeted for repair by the Shadowguard ethereals. Dimensius is the Void Lord they seek to restore. Remembering these four terms is enough to follow the scale of the plot without memorizing every faction or quest objective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich catch-up option should you choose?
| Option | Time | Story coverage | Gameplay refresher | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerated The War Within Recap | A few hours, according to Blizzard | Main War Within plot, key characters and cinematics from the Isle of Dorn through K’aresh | Limited | Players who mainly need the lore |
| Returning Player Catch Up Experience | Short guided quest sequence; Blizzard does not publish a fixed duration | Selected story context plus orientation for the current game | Strongest; includes appropriate gear and next-content guidance | Lapsed players who have forgotten controls, equipment or menus |
| Full replay of older expansions | Longest option | Broadest and most immersive history | Depends on how much time you spend playing | Lore completionists; optional for a Midnight launch |
The first two options are complementary rather than competing. A player can complete the returning-player sequence to regain mechanical fluency and then use the accelerated recap for the story. If you are comfortable with modern WoW systems, skip straight to the recap.

A step-by-step plan for a lapsed player
1. Decide whether you need a controls refresher
Log in and assess practical problems before starting the story. If you cannot remember how to open the map, change equipment, manage talents, use your class resources or find the current quest campaign, choose the Returning Player Catch Up Experience. Its purpose is orientation, not just plot delivery.
2. Complete the Returning Player Catch Up Experience when needed
- Enter the guided sequence in the Arathi Highlands.
- Follow its combat and movement prompts instead of abandoning the tutorial for older content.
- Equip the appropriate gear it provides and review the suggested next content.
- Use the sequence to confirm that your action bars, key bindings and class abilities work as expected.
Blizzard does not state a fixed completion time for this sequence, so treat it as a short orientation rather than a timed campaign.
3. Play the accelerated The War Within Recap
- Start on the Isle of Dorn, where the recap introduces the current crisis.
- Follow the main objectives and watch the included cinematics; they carry more story information than optional activities for this purpose.
- Pay attention to Dalaran’s destruction, Khadgar’s capture, the Dark Heart and the transition toward K’aresh.
- Finish the route so you have seen the recap’s intended endpoint rather than stopping after the first zone.
Blizzard describes this as covering the complete War Within story in a few hours of playtime. The phrase is qualitative, not a guaranteed completion time for every character, class or player.

Use the trailer after the recap, not instead of it. The trailer compresses the lead-in and specifically highlights Xal’atath’s deeds, Dalaran’s destruction and Dimensius’s return. Watching it last makes the transition into the new expansion easier to follow because you already know the people and artifacts being referenced.

5. Start the new campaign in Quel’Thalas
Once Midnight is available to you, follow the opening campaign in Quel’Thalas. The initial threat is direct: Xal’atath and the Devouring Host descend on the Sunwell, while Silvermoon and Eversong Woods come under attack. The defense brings together blood elves, void elves, night elves, high elves and nightborne, alongside the Alliance and the Light’s Vanguard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the opening of Midnight assumes you know
The expansion does not require encyclopedic knowledge of Warcraft history, but several relationships make its opening more meaningful.
- The Sunwell is both a power source and a cultural symbol. An attack on it threatens the survival and identity of the blood elves, not merely a military installation.
- Elven groups are being pulled into one defense. Blood elves, void elves, night elves, high elves and nightborne have different histories and loyalties, but the attack on Quel’Thalas creates a shared immediate danger.
- Alleria’s Void conflict is personal. Her connection to the Void gives the confrontation with Xal’atath a character-driven dimension beyond the larger faction war.
- Sylvanas’s return changes the emotional stakes. Her emergence from the Shadowlands places a major figure from the blood elf and Forsaken storylines back into the present crisis.
- The invasion follows an unfinished Void plot. The Dark Heart and Dimensius explain why the attack is part of a continuing campaign rather than an isolated raid.
Optional context if you want more Quel’Thalas background
The Warning update adds “Visions of a Shadowed Sun,” which continues the lead-in to Midnight. It also includes an elf-focused lorewalking activity. These are useful extras for players who want more background on Quel’Thalas and its people before entering the new campaign, but they are not necessary for the basic story route.
Use the optional material when you want atmosphere and historical context, not as a replacement for the accelerated recap. The recap explains the immediate chain from the Radiant Song to Xal’atath’s current offensive; the lorewalking content adds perspective on the elves.
Do you need to replay every previous expansion?
No. A complete replay is appropriate only if your goal is to experience Warcraft’s entire history in order. For the specific question “What do I need to know before Midnight?”, Blizzard’s accelerated War Within path already exists to condense the relevant story, and the returning-player sequence handles the separate problem of relearning the game.
Older expansions can still clarify why particular characters distrust one another or why the elves are divided, but those details are background enrichment. The immediate Midnight plot is understandable once you know the Dalaran catastrophe, the Dark Heart and Dimensius, Xal’atath’s role, and the attack on the Sunwell.
