To detect a scheduled job that never ran, monitor the expected work independently of the scheduler. Give each run a deadline with a deliberate grace period, then alert if the job has not reported successful completion. Scheduler logs can show whether an invocation was attempted; a completion heartbeat tells you whether the application actually finished.
What counts as a missed run?
A configured schedule is only a plan. A scheduler may attempt an invocation that never reaches the target, and a target may start work that later hangs or fails. Track the stages separately where possible: expected time, start, completion, and result. That evidence distinguishes a run that never started from one that stalled or ended in error.
For each important schedule, arrange for the job to send a success heartbeat to a monitor that is independent of the scheduler and the job host. The monitor waits through the expected interval and a grace period, then alerts if no completion signal arrives. The MissedRun project describes this approach using unique ping URLs, an expected interval, a grace period, and a missing-job alert.

There is no universal grace period. Base it on the schedule’s normal jitter, the platform’s delivery window, the job’s usual runtime, and how quickly someone needs to know that a run is late. A short deadline can page on ordinary delays; a long one postpones detection. Keep the last-success time and alert state visible, and make recovery retries idempotent so a rerun does not repeat harmful side effects.

How to investigate a run that appears to be missing
- Recalculate when it was due. Evaluate the actual schedule expression using its configured timezone. Check whether it was edited, disabled, suspended, affected by a daylight-saving transition, restricted by a branch or controller setting, or absent from the branch expected to run it.
- Check scheduler evidence. Determine whether the event became due, whether the scheduler attempted an invocation, and whether delivery was delayed, throttled, dropped, or exhausted its retries.
- Check the target and application. Look for a created run, a start signal, a completion signal, and the final result. A start heartbeat without a completion heartbeat points to a hang or interrupted run; no start signal points earlier in the chain.
- Alert on missing completion and explicit failure. Keep timestamps and run identifiers so operators can distinguish a retry from a duplicate and reconstruct what happened.
- Test the alert path deliberately. In a controlled test, suppress or delay a test heartbeat and verify that the alert reaches the intended responder. Do not assume a monitor is working simply because it has not alerted.
Platform-specific checks
Amazon EventBridge Scheduler
In CloudWatch, AWS documents the AWS/Scheduler metrics InvocationAttemptCount, TargetErrorCount, TargetErrorThrottledCount, InvocationThrottleCount, and InvocationDroppedCount. For schedules with a dead-letter queue (DLQ), AWS also documents DLQ delivery and failure metrics. Attempts indicate scheduler activity; target errors and dropped invocations help diagnose failed delivery or retries that ran out. Inspect DLQ messages for target error details. See AWS EventBridge Scheduler monitoring documentation.
AWS warns that “CloudWatch metrics are delivered on a best-effort basis.” Metric completeness and timeliness are not guaranteed, and AWS says the metrics are not a complete accounting of operations. Use them as operational signals rather than the sole audit record for critical work.

For a schedule that does not appear to fire, AWS recommends checking cron syntax, timezone, and flexible time windows. The troubleshooting documentation says schedule preview shows the next 10 execution times. EventBridge Scheduler cron expressions use minutes, hours, day-of-month, month, day-of-week, and year; the two day fields cannot both be specified, and sub-minute cron intervals are unsupported. Also validate universal-target parameters: a schedule can be created successfully but fail when invoked. Configure a DLQ to help investigate such failures. See AWS EventBridge Scheduler troubleshooting guidance.

GitHub warns that scheduled events may be delayed during high Actions load and that some queued jobs may be dropped. The start of each hour is a particularly busy period, so choosing another minute may help avoid that peak. A scheduled workflow runs only from the default branch, and its workflow file must exist there. GitHub uses UTC by default, supports optional IANA timezone-aware schedules, and documents a minimum schedule interval of once every five minutes. See GitHub’s scheduled workflow documentation.

If a workflow run exists but a job was skipped, inspect the job’s condition evaluation in the logs. A failed condition can explain why a job did not run even though the scheduled workflow event did.
Kubernetes CronJobs
A Kubernetes CronJob creates Jobs approximately once per scheduled time, but circumstances can result in multiple Jobs or no Job. Make the work idempotent. On Kubernetes 1.32 and later, a created Job carries the batch.kubernetes.io/cronjob-scheduled-timestamp annotation with its originally scheduled time. See Kubernetes CronJob documentation.

startingDeadlineSecondslimits how late a Job may be created after its intended time. Once that window passes, Kubernetes skips the occurrence.concurrencyPolicy: Forbidskips a new run while the previous Job is still active..spec.suspendpauses subsequent executions, which count as missed. After the CronJob is unsuspended, missed work may be scheduled immediately if no starting deadline is set.
Kubernetes documents that more than 100 missed schedules can prevent catch-up scheduling. It also warns that a startingDeadlineSeconds value below 10 seconds may prevent scheduling because the controller checks every 10 seconds. These are controller behaviors, not general reliability statistics. Check CronJob status and events, then inspect the Job and its Pods: the CronJob controller creates Jobs, and each Job manages its Pods.
What to monitor—and what each signal proves
| Signal | What it can establish | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduler metric or invocation log | Whether the scheduler recorded an attempt or a delivery problem. | Whether the application completed successfully. |
| Run-created or start signal | Whether work reached the target or began running. | Whether it finished or produced the intended result. |
| Completion heartbeat and result | Whether the job reported completion, and—if the result is recorded—whether it reported success or failure. | Whether the monitor and its alert route are functioning unless those are tested too. |
| Independent missed-run alert | Whether the expected completion signal failed to arrive by the configured deadline. | Why it failed; use scheduler, target, and application evidence to diagnose the cause. |
Choose monitoring that fits the failure you need to catch
Before selecting a monitoring approach, decide whether you need to detect only a run that never starts, or also one that starts and then hangs or fails. An end-to-end completion heartbeat covers the latter cases more directly than scheduler-attempt metrics. Then assess whether the monitor remains independent when the scheduler or job host is unavailable, and whether it supports your schedules, timezones, and late-run grace windows.
