Windows 10 includes a built-in Cascade windows command on the taskbar menu. The standard Windows 11 taskbar does not, so Windows 11 requires a PowerShell command, shortcut, or batch file.
Windows 10: cascade windows from the taskbar
Use the taskbar’s empty-space menu—not an individual app button.
- Open several normal desktop windows, such as File Explorer, Notepad, or a browser.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Cascade windows.
Windows rearranges eligible windows into an overlapping, staggered layout. The title bars remain visible, making it possible to select a different window without cycling through them with Alt+Tab.
Undo the cascade in Windows 10
Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Undo Cascade all windows, if that option is available. Windows may remove the undo command after you open, close, move, or snap a window, so it is not always present.

If “Cascade windows” is missing

Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but Microsoft no longer provides free standard security fixes, software updates, or technical assistance for it.
Windows 11: use PowerShell to cascade windows
The standard Windows 11 taskbar context menu does not contain Cascade windows. Right-clicking the taskbar normally provides options such as Taskbar settings, not the older Windows 10 window-arrangement commands.
To run the equivalent command:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Terminal or Windows Terminal.
- Paste this command:
(New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application).CascadeWindows()- Press Enter.
Administrator privileges are not required. The command asks Windows Shell to arrange eligible open desktop windows in a cascading layout.

You can execute the same command without opening Terminal:
- Press Windows+R.
- Paste the following command into the Run box:
powershell -NoProfile -Command "(New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application).CascadeWindows()"- Select OK or press Enter.
Create a Windows 11 cascade shortcut
A desktop shortcut gives you a reusable one-click command.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New → Shortcut.
- Enter this exact location:
powershell.exe -NoProfile -WindowStyle Hidden -Command "(New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application).CascadeWindows()"- Select Next.
- Enter a name, such as Cascade Windows.
- Select Finish.
Double-click the shortcut whenever you want to rearrange the windows. -WindowStyle Hidden prevents a visible PowerShell window from appearing during the operation.

Create a batch file
If you prefer a file that can be pinned, copied, or placed in a scripts folder, create a batch file with this content:

CascadeWindows.batOpening the file runs the PowerShell command and cascades the eligible windows.
Windows that may not cascade
Cascade is intended for ordinary, resizable desktop windows. File Explorer, Notepad, Paint, Word, Excel, Chrome, and Firefox generally respond as expected, but special window states and window types can prevent the result you expect.

Multiple monitors and virtual desktops
With multiple monitors, Windows generally arranges eligible windows within their existing desktop workspace. It does not necessarily gather every window onto one display.

Settings → System → Multitasking → Desktops
Under On the taskbar, show all the open windows, choose either:
- Only on the desktop I’m using
- On all desktops
This setting controls taskbar visibility across virtual desktops. It is not a separate Cascade setting, and it does not make Task view provide a cascade command.
What to use instead on Windows 11
For a structured layout rather than overlapping windows, use Windows 11 Snap features. Snap layouts place windows into fixed zones; they are not an equivalent of the staggered Cascade arrangement.
For a view of open windows and virtual desktops, press Windows+Tab or select the Task view taskbar button. Task view helps you select and organize windows, but it does not include a documented Cascade windows command.
Also be cautious with guides that recommend right-clicking the Windows 11 desktop and choosing Show more options → Cascade windows. That is not the standard location of the command. The legacy taskbar command belongs to Windows 10, while Windows 11’s standard taskbar requires the command-based method above.

Can I cascade windows with a keyboard shortcut?
There is no reliable, current universal keyboard shortcut for Cascade windows in Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Windows 10 taskbar command or the Windows 11 PowerShell command is the dependable method.

Why does Windows 11 not show Cascade windows when I right-click the taskbar?
The standard Windows 11 taskbar menu does not include the Windows 10 window-arrangement commands. Run (New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application).CascadeWindows() in Terminal or PowerShell instead.

Not necessarily. Minimized windows may remain minimized. Restore them from the taskbar before running Cascade again.
Do I need to run the Windows 11 command as administrator?
No. The documented PowerShell and Run methods do not require administrator privileges.
Will Cascade windows move windows between monitors?
Usually, Windows arranges eligible windows within their existing desktop workspace. It does not necessarily move every window to a single monitor.

Restore minimized or maximized windows first, and use windowed mode for full-screen applications that do not respond.
