For a PDF, open the rendered Markdown preview in Visual Studio Code and use your system print command to choose Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF. For a single, full-length PNG or JPEG, install the Markdown PDF extension and run its export command. The built-in route needs no extension; the extension route gives repeatable image exports, page controls and Chromium-based rendering.
Choose the right capture method
Your choice depends on the output and how much control you need:

VS Code supports Markdown files out of the box, so start with the built-in preview unless you need a long raster image, richer syntax, or automated repeatability.

- Save the source. Save the file with a
.mdextension. Unsaved edits, unresolved links and missing local assets can make the exported result differ from what you expect. - Open the rendered preview. In VS Code, run Markdown: Open Preview from the Command Palette, or use
Ctrl+Shift+Von Windows/Linux andShift+Cmd+Von macOS. To place it beside the editor, run Markdown: Open Preview to the Side or pressCtrl+K Von Windows/Linux andCmd+K Von macOS. - Wait for dynamic content. Keep the preview active until remote images, fonts, Mermaid diagrams and other generated content finish rendering. Exporting while those resources are still loading produces blank areas or incomplete diagrams.
- Check security and URLs. The default Strict preview security setting disables scripts and blocks HTTP images. Use HTTPS for remote assets. If a trusted workspace genuinely requires scripts, change the preview security setting only for that trusted content; do not weaken it for untrusted Markdown.
- Check the visual width. Very wide tables and code blocks can be clipped when printed. Resize the preview pane or plan a larger paper width before exporting.
Save the preview as a PDF without an extension
This is the lowest-friction method and is normally sufficient for a readable, multi-page document.

- Make the preview the active surface by clicking inside it.
- Invoke your operating system or browser print command. In the print dialog, select Save as PDF or, on Windows, Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Choose the paper size, orientation, margins and scale. Use print preview rather than guessing: confirm the final heading, every table row, code block and diagram are present.
- Turn on Background graphics when the design depends on colored panels, dark backgrounds or shaded code blocks. If the result is too dark or consumes excessive ink, use a light print stylesheet instead.
- Set a page range only after checking the page count. Saving all pages avoids silently omitting a section.
- Choose a destination and save the PDF. Open the resulting file once to verify fonts, links, images and page breaks.
Exact print labels vary by host platform and by whether the preview is printed through the embedded surface or a browser window. The controls that matter are paper format, orientation, margins, scale, page range and background graphics.
Fixing page breaks in the print dialog
- Headings or tables split awkwardly: reduce scale slightly, increase paper width, or adjust margins. Recheck the print preview after each change.
- Right edges are cut off: use landscape orientation, a wider paper format, smaller scale or a narrower preview pane.
- Dark theme prints poorly: enable background graphics if the dark design is intentional, or switch to a light print stylesheet for a more legible PDF.
- Images are missing: wait for them to load and replace HTTP image URLs with HTTPS. Preview security can block scripts and insecure images.
Export a full-page PNG, JPEG or controlled PDF with Markdown PDF
Install the Markdown PDF extension when you need one complete long image, explicit screenshot dimensions, or repeatable PDF settings. The extension converts Markdown files to PDF, HTML, PNG or JPEG using a Chromium-based browser.
Run an export
- Install Markdown PDF from the VS Code Extensions view.
- Open the Markdown file you want to export.
- Open the Command Palette and run
markdown-pdf: Export (pdf),markdown-pdf: Export (png)ormarkdown-pdf: Export (jpeg). - For a complete set of outputs, run
markdown-pdf: Export (all: pdf, html, png, jpeg). - Open the generated file and inspect the bottom of the document, the widest table and every diagram before distributing it.
Control PDF layout
Markdown PDF exposes settings for paper format (including A4 and Letter), orientation, page ranges, explicit width and height, margins and print-background. Use paper and margin settings for multi-page PDFs. Use explicit width and height when you need a stable canvas across documents or build systems.
Control a long PNG or JPEG
PNG and JPEG exports use screenshot clipping settings: clip.x, clip.y, clip.width and clip.height. First inspect the rendered page dimensions, then set the clip rectangle to include the entire document. If the clip height is shorter than the content, the bottom is cut off; if it is larger, you may capture excess blank space.

Choose PNG when text must remain lossless. Choose JPEG when a smaller file is more important and minor compression artifacts are acceptable. A very tall raster image can be difficult to read or share; for multi-page material, PDF is usually the more practical format.
Make extension exports repeatable
- Keep paper format, orientation, margins and dimensions in workspace settings so collaborators use the same values.
- Use local fonts and local image assets when possible. Remote resources can change or fail between runs.
- Wait for all asynchronous content before starting an export. A fixed delay or stable local assets is more reproducible than exporting immediately after opening the file.
- Use a light, print-oriented stylesheet when the source is designed for a dark editor theme.
When Markdown Preview Enhanced is the better renderer
Markdown Preview Enhanced supports math, Mermaid, PlantUML and presentation features in addition to Markdown rendering and PDF export. Choose it when those features are the intended source of truth for the document. Its documented capabilities do not establish a dedicated full-document PNG command, so use its PDF export for a document or pair the rendered preview with a screenshot tool when you need a raster image.
Do not mix renderers casually: a diagram or formula can look different between the built-in preview, Markdown Preview Enhanced and Chromium-based Markdown PDF. Decide which renderer is authoritative, then export from that renderer and verify the result.
Use Print2Paper4VSCode for a print-oriented workflow
Print2Paper4VSCode advertises one-keystroke printing or saving to PDF and a rendered mode for Markdown’s HTML preview. It supports macOS, Windows and Linux. This is useful when your deliverable is a print-ready PDF and you prefer a dedicated print panel instead of configuring a general print dialog. It is not the first choice for a single long PNG or JPEG; use Markdown PDF for that requirement.

Style the preview for clean captures
VS Code supports preview CSS through the markdown.previewStyles extension contribution point. A project or extension can add print-oriented styles for typography, table borders, code blocks and page-break behavior.
Practical styling checks
- Set a readable body width and line height so a long page does not become an extremely wide image.
- Give tables explicit borders and cell padding; otherwise faint grid lines may disappear in print.
- Prevent code blocks and diagrams from overflowing horizontally. A smaller font or controlled wrapping is preferable to clipped text.
- Use contrasting heading colors and a light print background when the output will be printed.
- Keep page-break-sensitive elements together where possible, then confirm the result in print preview because browser pagination can still vary.
Why captures are incomplete or different
Images, diagrams or scripts are missing
Strict preview security blocks scripts and HTTP images. Serve images over HTTPS, keep required assets local when practical, and change preview security only for a workspace you trust. Wait for Mermaid or other generated diagrams to finish before printing or exporting.
The bottom of a long image is cut off
For the print route, reduce scale or increase paper width. For Markdown PDF, set explicit dimensions or correct the clip coordinates and height. Compare the clip rectangle with the actual rendered page dimensions.

Check orientation, margins, scale and page range. Wide tables often force awkward pagination; landscape orientation or a smaller scale can help. Reopen the saved PDF rather than relying only on the print preview thumbnail.

Fonts or remote assets change between exports
Remote fonts and images can load at different times or change independently of your Markdown. Prefer local assets and fixed CSS for reproducible output, and wait until the preview is visually stable before exporting.
The capture is too dark
Enable print background graphics when the dark design is intentional. Otherwise apply a light print stylesheet; this usually improves contrast and reduces ink use.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Only the visible viewport appears: use Markdown PDF’s PNG or JPEG export rather than a normal screen screenshot, or use its explicit clip height to cover the full rendered document.
- A remote image is blank: confirm the URL uses HTTPS, check preview security, and wait for the image to finish loading.
- Mermaid renders in one workflow but not another: export from the renderer that supports the diagram, such as Markdown Preview Enhanced, rather than switching renderers at the last step.
- Text is blurry in JPEG: export PNG for lossless text, or increase the capture scale before accepting JPEG compression.
- Print output is narrower than the preview: select landscape, increase paper width, reduce margins or lower scale; then inspect the final page in the PDF viewer.
