To prove that someone copied your TikTok video, preserve the untouched original and its metadata, document the original post while logged in, capture the copied post with its URL and UTC time, and keep screenshots, a context-preserving screen recording, and a side-by-side comparison. Store every file unchanged with a stable name and evidence-log entry, then submit TikTok’s copyright report with a precise ownership explanation.
The strongest package connects your original file to your account and shows exactly which expressive elements appear in the other post. A screenshot by itself is rarely as useful as a coordinated set of raw files, authenticated account views, URLs, timestamps, and comparisons.
Capture everything before the copied post changes
Start as soon as you find the suspected copy. Posts can be edited, made private, deleted, or replaced, so preserve your own source files first and record what is visible at the time of capture.
- Create an evidence folder with a subfolder for the original, the copied post, comparisons, and the evidence log.
- Use UTC consistently. Write the capture time in the log immediately after each capture, including the date, hour, minute, and seconds when your device provides them.
- Keep the first-generation screenshots, recordings, downloads, and source video unchanged. Work from copies when adding labels or annotations.

Preserve the original video and its metadata
Keep the raw source file
Save the original, unedited video exactly as exported or recorded. TikTok’s IP Protection Center asks for the raw original video with its timestamp and metadata, without edits, overlays, or watermarks. Do not crop it, add a copyright notice, burn in a timecode, or re-export it before saving the source.
Also retain project files, camera originals, and export history when they exist. A project file can show how the sequence was assembled, while the untouched export preserves the file metadata that would be lost during repeated conversions. Make working copies for any visual comparison so that the source remains byte-for-byte unchanged.
Document your ownership connection
Write down which account created and published the video, the original post URL, handle, caption, sound, and the UTC time at which you captured the page. TikTok’s guidance calls for a screenshot of the account used to post the original, with you visibly logged in. Capture the profile or account context and the original post in a way that makes the relationship between the account and the video clear.

If the video exists in more than one original export, preserve each version and note which one corresponds to the TikTok post. Do not discard a higher-quality source merely because the platform displays a compressed copy.
Capture the original TikTok post as authenticated evidence
- Open the original post while logged in to the account that published it.
- Capture the page or screen so the account identity, post URL, caption, sound, and visible date information are readable.
- Record the UTC capture time in your log. The time in the log is when you observed and captured the page, not a claim that TikTok created the post at that exact second.
- Save the original screenshot file and, if you record video, keep the unedited recording as well.
Use a view that preserves context instead of capturing only the video frame. A profile or page header followed by the post helps show which account published it. If the post is visible in a feed, include enough surrounding interface to identify the account and URL without obscuring the relevant caption or sound.
Capture the copied post with URL, handle, date, and UTC time
Take timestamped stills
Save screenshots of the copied post showing the copied account handle, the post URL, visible date information, caption, sound, and the video frames that contain the matching expression. Take more than one still when the information cannot fit legibly in a single view. Keep each original image unchanged.
Make a short context-preserving screen recording
Record a continuous sequence that starts with the account or page context, scrolls to the copied post, and shows the copied frames. TikTok’s evidence guidance specifically calls for a short screen recording that scrolls from the account or page context into the copied material. Retain the original capture file rather than only an edited highlight.

A recording is useful when a static screenshot cannot show how the post was reached or when the URL, handle, and video are separated on screen. Do not add music, captions, or speed changes to the file you submit as the original capture. If you need an explanatory version, export it separately and label it as an edited copy.
Record changes and access problems
If the copied post changes between captures, create a new log entry rather than replacing the first files. Note whether the page became private, displayed an error, or showed a different caption or video. A failed load is still worth logging because it explains why a later capture differs.
Show the matching expression, not just the same idea
Prepare side-by-side stills or a time-coded comparison. Mark matching scenes, sequence order, cuts, captions, on-screen graphics, narration, music, or other expressive elements. Keep the source frames visible and identify which side is the original and which is the copied post.
TikTok’s policy states: Copyright protects an original expression of an idea (e.g., the specific way a video or music is expressed or created) but does not protect underlying ideas or facts.
Your explanation should therefore describe the reused footage, edit sequence, captions, audio, or other expression. Saying only that both videos discuss the same subject is weaker evidence because an underlying idea or fact is not itself protected by copyright.
Copyright exceptions, including fair use or fair dealing, vary by jurisdiction. A matching comparison can document what was reused, but it cannot guarantee that TikTok will remove the post or that a legal claim will succeed.
Build an evidence log that another person can follow
Use a spreadsheet or plain-text log with one row per file or event. At minimum, record:
- A stable filename.
- UTC capture date and time.
- The exact URL.
- The account handle and whether it is the original or copied account.
- A short description of what the file shows.
- Any change, error, or access limitation observed.
Choose names that sort chronologically, such as 2026-10-16T14-32-08Z_original-account.png and 2026-10-16T14-35-41Z_copied-post-screen-recording.mp4. The filename does not prove the time by itself; it makes the relationship between the file and your log auditable.

Keep redundant copies in at least two separate locations. Preserve the originals as read-only where practical, and calculate a SHA-256 hash for important files if your operating system provides a hashing utility. Record the hash beside the filename so you can demonstrate that a later copy has not changed. TikTok does not promise that a particular file format or hash will be accepted in court; this is organization and preservation practice based on the evidence categories TikTok lists.
Choose a capture method that preserves context
Compare methods by whether they retain the page context and URL, keep the raw file and metadata, show the account and timestamp clearly, support repeatable captures and redundant storage, and produce files that can be attached to TikTok’s reporting form.

For a private or authenticated original account, a manual logged-in capture is usually the clearest way to show the account relationship. For a public copied URL, automation can supplement—not replace—the context-preserving capture and original source files.
File TikTok’s copyright report precisely
TikTok says a copyright owner or authorized representative can use the in-app intellectual-property flow or the online Copyright Infringement Report. Prepare the package before opening the form so every URL and attachment is consistent.
- Provide the requested contact and ownership information.
- Identify each copied post by its exact URL and handle.
- Attach or reference the raw original video, metadata, account screenshot, timestamped captures, screen recording, and comparison material.
- Explain exactly which original expression was reused: for example, the same footage and sequence, an identical edit, matching captions, or the same recorded audio.
- Review every field for completeness before submitting.
Incomplete information can lead to denial. TikTok also warns that intentionally misleading or fraudulent reports can create liability under applicable law. State only what your files support, distinguish the original posting time from your UTC capture time, and do not claim certainty about facts you could not observe.

Preserve your own files and captures immediately. TikTok’s law-enforcement guidelines describe a separate formal preservation process; it is not a general creator self-service hold. A qualifying request must be submitted through the designated webform, on law-enforcement letterhead, signed, and must identify the username, data type, and date ranges.
Under those guidelines, TikTok will honor a qualifying formal request to preserve user data for 90 days. A formal request to extend may provide one additional 90-day period. This process is for law enforcement and does not let a creator place an automatic hold on a post.

If your matter is already with law enforcement or counsel, give them the exact handle, URLs, UTC capture times, and date ranges from your log so they can decide whether a preservation request is appropriate.
Understand the separate developer-content remediation timeline
TikTok for Developers’ guidance dated August 4, 2026 describes a three-calendar-day remediation period after a substantiated infringement report for the covered developer-content workflow. That timeline is not a universal promise for every creator copyright report or every TikTok post. Treat it as a workflow-specific statement and follow the instructions attached to the report channel you use.

Troubleshoot common evidence problems
The screenshot does not show the URL
Capture the browser or app context in a second still and link the two files with consecutive log entries. Do not crop away the address or share information from the only copy.
The account handle is truncated
Take a wider account or profile capture, then a separate close view of the video. Record the exact handle as text in the log and preserve both original images.
The visible date conflicts with your capture time
They represent different events. The visible date is information displayed by TikTok; your UTC log time is when you captured the page. Record both without converting one into the other.
The copied post is unavailable
Keep the URL, the error or unavailable-page capture, and your earlier files. If the matter requires platform data beyond what you can access, provide the evidence to law enforcement or counsel so they can evaluate the formal preservation process.
The video was downloaded and re-uploaded with edits
Compare the expressive elements that remain: matching scenes, order, cuts, captions, audio, or graphics. Preserve the downloaded copy only as a separate working or reference file; do not substitute it for your untouched original.

The report form rejects an attachment
Keep the original file in your evidence folder, make a clearly labeled copy in the format the form accepts, and note the conversion in the log. Never overwrite the source or claim that a converted file is the raw original.
