For console footage, the dependable method is an external game-capture device between the console and a computer. Connect the console’s video output to the capture device, connect the device to the recording computer, send a passthrough signal to your display if you need to play normally, configure your recording application, and make a short test before filming complete scenes. PC gameplay may be recordable without a separate capture device, but the appropriate software and settings depend on your computer and were not established here.

Do the rights check before wiring anything. Capcom’s official FAQ says: “You may post or stream gameplay videos as long as you comply with the Capcom Video Guidelines.” That conditional permission does not establish that every fan film, soundtrack use, edit, or commercial release is allowed. Read the current guidelines for your territory, platform and intended distribution before you publish.

What you need to capture Resident Evil gameplay

A practical console setup has four parts:

  • The Resident Evil game running on a compatible console.
  • An external capture device that accepts the console’s video connection.
  • A computer with a recording application supported by that device and operating system.
  • A display and cables arranged so you can play while the computer records.

The signal normally follows this path: console video output to the capture device’s input, capture device output to the display for passthrough, and the capture device’s computer connection to the recording computer. Your exact ports, resolutions, refresh rates, HDR behavior and operating-system support must be checked against the chosen device. A product category name alone does not tell you what it can record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game runs on a PC, a capture card may be unnecessary for some workflows. This guide does not prescribe a particular PC recording program or claim that a specific configuration has been tested; select software that supports your operating system, game and desired audio tracks, then test it before production.

Check publication rights before you record a scene

Use Capcom’s current Video Guidelines as the controlling reference

Capcom Town’s official FAQ permits posting or streaming gameplay videos only when the creator complies with Capcom’s Video Guidelines. Treat the guidelines as the controlling document, not as a general promise that a Resident Evil fan film is automatically authorized. Before recording a long session, check the current policy version, the country or territory it covers, the platform where you will publish, monetization provisions and whether your planned format is covered.

The available FAQ wording does not resolve every use-specific question. In particular, it does not by itself answer whether your edited narrative fan film, a commercial release, a particular soundtrack, or third-party material is permitted. Recording a copy for editing and obtaining permission to distribute the finished film are separate issues.

Keep third-party music and material separate in your review

Game audio can contain material controlled by parties other than Capcom. Review music, voice, licensed assets and any additional footage or images independently. A Capcom event notice expressly limits responsibility for third-party content, so do not treat Capcom’s gameplay-video statement as clearance for every sound or asset in your edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not generalize event-specific rules

A Capcom notice dated December 26, 2025 described a Resident Evil Showcase watch party scheduled for January 16, 2026. That named activation required YouTube-only participation, an 18-plus age gate, specified framing and overlays, retention of an archive, no edited repost of the mirror stream, and restrictions on monetizing access. Those conditions belonged to that watch party. They are not universal requirements for ordinary gameplay capture or every fan film. Check the rules attached to your own release or event at upload time.

Choose the platform and recording path

Console capture

Use an external capture device when the game is on a console and the finished footage must be recorded on a computer. Confirm all of the following before buying or connecting anything:

  • The console’s video output and the capture device’s input use compatible connections.
  • The device supports the resolution and frame rate you intend to record.
  • The device’s passthrough supports the signal your display needs for comfortable play.
  • HDR is handled in the way your project requires: captured as HDR, converted to SDR, or disabled for the recording session.
  • The computer connection supplies enough bandwidth for the selected mode.
  • Your operating system and recording application support the device currently.

PC capture

For PC gameplay, first determine whether software capture meets your creative and performance requirements. A separate device can be useful in a two-computer or external-source workflow, but the correct choice depends on the game, graphics hardware, operating system, audio routing and target format. Because no specific PC software configuration was established for this guide, make a short test with your own application before committing to a scene.

Match the capture device to the film you want to make

Read capture and passthrough specifications as separate capabilities. A device may pass a high-resolution or high-refresh signal to your display while recording a different mode to the computer. Compare the following items against your shot list rather than assuming that a product name guarantees them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision What to verify Why it affects a fan film
Recorded capture mode Supported resolution and frame rate for the computer recording Determines the detail and motion characteristics available in the edit.
Passthrough mode Resolution and refresh rate delivered to the display Controls how you play and whether the monitor or television receives its preferred signal.
HDR workflow Whether HDR is captured at your chosen mode and whether HDR-to-SDR conversion is available Prevents a mismatch between game appearance and the color space of your final film.
Console compatibility The exact console generation, output format and connection A device that works with one console or signal is not automatically compatible with another.
Computer connection Interface type, bandwidth and current operating-system support Insufficient bandwidth or unsupported drivers can cause dropped frames, no signal or unstable recording.
Recording-app support Whether your current application recognizes the device and exposes its audio and video controls Determines whether you can capture the tracks and settings needed for editing.
Availability Current status and replacement models on the manufacturer’s page Discontinued hardware may be difficult to source or support.

Example: interpreting a current product page

Elgato’s HD60 X page describes capture and passthrough for PS5 and Xbox gameplay, but it also marks the HD60 X as discontinued and points readers to 4K S as an alternative. Do not make the HD60 X your default current purchase recommendation. If you are considering it because you already own one, verify its present compatibility with your console, computer and recording application. If you are buying new hardware, check the current alternative’s specifications directly and confirm that its capture mode—not merely its passthrough mode—matches your footage plan.

Wire a console capture setup

The labels vary by model, but the physical sequence is consistent.

  1. Place the console, capture device, computer and display. Keep the capture device ventilated and put the computer close enough for its connection cable. Use a direct connection wherever the manufacturer requires one.
  2. Connect the console’s video output to the capture input. Use the compatible cable and the input labeled for the console source.
  3. Connect the capture output to the display. This passthrough connection lets you play on the display while the computer receives a recording feed. If your display remains blank, stop and resolve the signal chain before opening the recording application.
  4. Connect the capture device to the recording computer. Use the supported computer interface and connect it before launching the recording application if the application only enumerates devices at startup.
  5. Power on in a predictable order. Start the display and console, then the capture device if it has separate power, and finally the computer and recording application. If the manufacturer specifies another order, follow that documentation.
  6. Select the capture device in the application. Choose it as the video source and select its audio input if the application exposes audio separately. Do not assume that seeing a picture means game audio is also being recorded.
  7. Set the project’s target format. Use a capture resolution, frame rate and HDR/SDR mode that the device, computer and later edit can all handle. Capture and passthrough values may differ.
  8. Record a short test. Include gameplay movement, quiet dialogue, a loud effect and any microphone or narration you plan to use. Stop, play the file back and inspect the image, audio, sync and color before filming full takes.

Configure audio for a film rather than a stream

Decide which sound you need before recording: game effects, dialogue, music, microphone narration or a clean version for later replacement. In the recording application, identify each available input and confirm where it is stored. A picture in the preview does not prove that game audio, microphone audio or both are present.

Use the short test to check for three common problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Missing game audio: confirm that the capture device’s audio input is selected and that the console is outputting sound through the connected path.
  • Missing narration: confirm the microphone input and whether the application records it as a separate track or mixes it into the gameplay track.
  • Audio drift or delay: clap, speak a sharp consonant or trigger a distinct in-game sound, then compare the event with the visible action during playback. Correct the application’s timing or routing before recording principal footage.

If you intend to replace game music with original or separately cleared audio, record and preserve a clean gameplay take that gives your editor room to work. Do not assume that muting music resolves all third-party-rights questions; review the material actually present in your final export.

Make a test recording that can prevent a ruined shoot

A five-minute test is more useful than discovering a problem after a multi-hour session. Use this sequence for every new console, game, display mode or capture-device change:

  1. Start the game at the same resolution, frame rate and HDR/SDR mode planned for the scene.
  2. Open the recording application and confirm the intended video and audio sources.
  3. Record a moving shot, a menu transition and a quiet moment.
  4. Speak a short identification line if narration or dialogue synchronization matters.
  5. Stop the recording and play the file from the computer, not only the live preview.
  6. Check the first and last seconds for missing frames, black video, abrupt audio starts or stops, and dropped connection symptoms.
  7. Inspect the recorded file’s image mode and dimensions in your editor before creating a full project.
  8. Repeat the test after changing HDR, refresh rate, cables, console settings or application settings.

Keep the successful test file with the project notes. It records the working signal path and can help you identify which change caused a later failure.

Capture usable takes for editing

Plan shots before pressing Record

Convert the script or storyboard into a shot list: location, character action, camera movement, desired game state, audio requirement and approximate duration. Record only the material you need, but leave a few seconds of clean action before and after each performance so an editor can cut without trimming a gesture or sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve original files

Give each take a meaningful name that includes scene, shot, take and date. Keep the original capture files unchanged and make edit copies. Do not rely on the timeline project as your only copy; a relinked or re-encoded file may not preserve the source exactly.

Capture continuity

Record repeated actions with the same console display mode, game settings, character loadout and capture configuration. A change from HDR to SDR, a different frame rate or a changed audio mix can make adjacent takes difficult to match. Note any unavoidable change in your shot log.

Storage and file handling

Gameplay recordings can become large quickly, especially when you retain multiple takes. An external SSD may be useful for keeping source files and edit media, but the available evidence does not establish a minimum capacity or a particular model. Treat storage as a workflow accessory, not a required part of every setup.

Use at least two copies of irreplaceable takes before formatting a card, deleting a session or beginning a major edit. Organize folders by project, scene and camera or capture source. Keep a text record of the console, capture device, display mode, application version and audio choices used for each session; those notes make pickups easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edit the footage into a fan film

  1. Ingest without altering originals. Copy the captures into the project’s source folder and verify that representative files open and play.
  2. Create a project that matches the intended delivery. Choose the final frame size, frame rate and HDR/SDR workflow deliberately. Do not let a default project setting silently convert every take.
  3. Assemble picture first. Use the shot list to build the narrative, then trim pauses and failed attempts while retaining handles around each cut.
  4. Balance sound. Separate or replace game audio as your rights review requires. Add original narration, effects or music only when you have the necessary permission for the final distribution.
  5. Check continuity and color. Compare adjacent takes for exposure, HDR/SDR differences, aspect treatment and visible overlays.
  6. Export a review copy. Watch the complete file on the platform or player you expect your audience to use. Check sync, dialogue intelligibility, clipping, black frames and unintended menus.
  7. Keep a master and a delivery copy. Preserve a high-quality master and create platform-specific exports only after the master passes review.

Upload-time checks are separate from capture

Revisit Capcom’s current Video Guidelines when the film is ready to publish. Platform policies and event conditions can change, and a recording that was technically successful may still need a different title, disclosure, age setting, monetization choice or audio treatment. The December 2025 watch-party notice illustrates why you must read the rules for the specific activation: its YouTube-only, 18-plus, framing, archive, reposting and monetization provisions were tied to that event, not to all Resident Evil uploads.

Confirm the destination platform’s own rules as well. Keep evidence of the policy version you relied on, your permissions for third-party music or assets, and the final export you actually uploaded. If the planned commercial or fan-film use is not clearly covered, obtain appropriate legal advice or permission before release rather than assuming that capture itself grants distribution rights.

Troubleshoot the capture chain

Symptom Likely area to check Action
No picture on the display Console output, cable, capture input or passthrough mode Verify the console is on, reseat the video connections, select the correct input and confirm that the capture device supports the console’s current output mode.
Preview is black but passthrough works Computer connection, application source or unsupported capture mode Reconnect the computer interface, reopen the application, select the capture source again and choose a mode the device lists for recording.
Picture records but sound is absent Audio routing or source selection Confirm the console output path, select the capture audio input and play back a file rather than trusting the live preview.
Gameplay is visible but microphone is missing Microphone source or track assignment Select the intended microphone, check its level meter and verify whether it is recorded separately or mixed.
Audio and action do not align Application latency, routing or conversion Use a short test with a sharp visible and audible event, identify the offset in playback and correct the configuration before the next take.
Display looks better than the recorded file Capture-versus-passthrough difference Compare the device’s capture specification with its passthrough specification; set the recording mode to one the computer can actually capture.
Colors look wrong after editing HDR/SDR mismatch or project conversion Confirm whether the source is HDR or SDR, whether the device converts it, and whether the editor project uses the same intended color workflow.
Long recordings stop or become unreliable Storage, connection stability or computer load Check available storage, use the supported computer connection, close unnecessary workloads and test a shorter recording before repeating the scene.

A production checklist

  • Read the current Capcom Video Guidelines and verify that your territory, platform, format and monetization plan are covered.
  • Review music, voices, footage and other third-party material separately.
  • Identify whether the source is console or PC and choose the corresponding recording path.
  • For console capture, verify input, capture mode, passthrough mode, HDR behavior, computer interface and operating-system support.
  • Do not buy discontinued hardware without confirming current compatibility; the HD60 X is marked discontinued on Elgato’s page, which points to 4K S as an alternative.
  • Wire the console, capture device, display and computer, then select the correct video and audio sources.
  • Record and review a short test after every major signal or setting change.
  • Log scene, shot, take, game state, display mode and audio choices.
  • Preserve original files and maintain more than one copy of irreplaceable footage.
  • Review Capcom and destination-platform rules again immediately before upload.

Resident Evil context for your project

Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal states that the series began in 1996 and reports more than 100 million copies sold. The sales figure is Capcom’s own cumulative franchise claim, not an independently audited number, but it explains why fan productions can attract a broad audience. Popularity does not change the need to follow the applicable video guidelines or obtain rights for material outside your permission.
