Use Microsoft Edge’s built-in Screenshot command for the quickest full-page Bing capture, or use DevTools when you need a fixed viewport and device profile. In either case, record the query, UTC time, market, language, sign-in state, browser version, viewport, zoom, SafeSearch and extensions before saving the original image. That turns a long SERP image into defensible evidence instead of an unexplained snapshot.
Choose the right capture method
There are two practical native workflows:
- Edge Screenshot: fastest for a one-off page. It captures content beyond the visible viewport and lets you copy or save the result, with optional markup.
- DevTools full-size screenshot: better for repeatable testing because you can set an explicit viewport, device profile, device-pixel ratio and device type before capture.
A full-page image shows what Bing rendered for one set of conditions. It does not guarantee that another user, device or location will see the same ads or organic layout.
Method 1: Capture a full Bing page with Edge Screenshot
1. Open and stabilize the exact query
- Open the precise Bing results URL in Microsoft Edge.
- Wait until the page has settled. Do not scroll while the initial results, ad modules or answer boxes are still changing.
- Record the test metadata before taking the image (the checklist appears below).
2. Start Screenshot
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose the option for a full-page capture rather than a selected region.
- Review the long image. Add arrows or labels only if you are making a separate working copy.
- Save the image to your evidence folder or copy it into your test record.
Edge’s Screenshot feature is designed to capture a full page, including content that extends beyond the viewport, and supports markup before copying or saving. Keep the untouched export as the original; annotations should never overwrite it.
Method 2: Capture a controlled full-size page in DevTools
1. Set a named device or explicit dimensions
- Open DevTools (press F12 or use Edge’s developer-tools command).
- Turn on Device Mode.
- Select a named device, or enter the exact viewport width and height required by your test.
- Set device-pixel ratio and device type when those variables are part of the experiment.
- Keep zoom and browser window conditions fixed across captures.
2. Capture the complete page
- Open the DevTools More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Save the resulting image with a filename that identifies the query and test cell.
This command captures the page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport. Device Mode makes desktop-versus-mobile comparisons reproducible, provided you keep every other test input constant.

Metadata to save with every screenshot
Put the following values in a sidecar JSON, spreadsheet row or test-management record. Use UTC for the timestamp and do not rely on the image’s file date alone.

Build a useful Bing ad-placement test matrix
Do not average unlike captures into one conclusion. Treat each combination below as a separate test cell when the project has enough traffic or budget.

Capture every cell at a consistent point after the page settles. If you change the market, device, language or session, label it as a new cell rather than comparing it directly with the old one. Repeat important cells on different dates when the goal is to detect layout or inventory changes.

Annotate without damaging the evidence
- Store the original full-page file immediately after capture.
- Make a duplicate for markup.
- Use a consistent legend: one color for ad slots, another for ad labels, and separate colors for organic results, answer boxes, shopping modules, news, videos and related searches.
- Label the first occurrence of each module and note its position in the page.
- Keep the metadata record beside both files so an auditor can connect the annotation to the exact observation.
Do not crop away the query, labels or page context in the evidence copy. A cropped image may be useful in a presentation, but it should not replace the complete original.

What the screenshot proves—and what it does not
A capture documents what Bing displayed under the recorded conditions at that moment. Bing says result presentation can use search history, location, language, operating-system or browser characteristics, and whether the person is on mobile, tablet or desktop. That is why one image cannot be generalized to every searcher.
Paid advertisements are labeled. Payment does not improve a site’s organic “blue link” ranking. An image can therefore document an ad’s position and labeling, but it cannot prove an organic-ranking boost, an auction rule, spend level or future delivery.
A repeatable evidence workflow
- Define the query list and the test matrix before opening the browser.
- Prepare the market, language, session and device conditions for the first cell.
- Record all metadata in UTC.
- Capture with Edge Screenshot or DevTools full-size screenshot.
- Save the untouched original using a stable filename such as
query-cell-utc.png. - Create an annotated derivative and mark ad labels, positions and other modules.
- Repeat the same cell when timing or inventory volatility could affect the conclusion.
- Compare only captures with matching conditions, and report changed conditions as separate observations.

Troubleshooting common capture failures
The image ends at the visible viewport
In Edge, reopen Screenshot and select full-page capture rather than a selected area. In DevTools, use More options > Capture a full size screenshot, not the ordinary viewport screenshot. Confirm that the saved file has dimensions larger than the browser window.

Check extensions and content blockers, then compare a clean session with the documented signed-in state. Verify market, language, SafeSearch and device settings. A missing ad may be a legitimate no-ad observation; record it rather than treating it as a capture error.
Two captures of the same query differ
Compare timestamps, location, language, session, browser version, viewport, zoom and extensions. Bing can personalize results and ad presentation, and inventory changes over time. Re-run the exact cell and report the difference as volatility when conditions match.

The mobile image does not match desktop
That is expected when the viewport or device type changes. Keep desktop and mobile in separate matrix cells; do not resize one image and call it a mobile result.
DevTools capture is the wrong size
Check Device Mode’s width, height and device-pixel ratio before opening the capture menu. Set the values explicitly instead of relying on a remembered device profile.

The defensible answer to “where did the ad appear?” is always conditional: identify the exact Bing query, capture the entire page, preserve the original, and attach the environment that produced it.
