To make a fair graphics-mod comparison, load the same saved in-game view for each configuration and keep the camera, lighting, HUD, resolution, graphics settings, and capture method consistent. Change only the mod state you are testing. That way, differences between the screenshots are more likely to show the mod’s contribution—not a changed scene or capture setup.

Set up a repeatable in-game reference

Choose a stable save, checkpoint, or location that clearly shows the texture, lighting, shadow, reflection, or other effect you want to compare. Capture the game itself: an editor or studio render may not reproduce the game’s lighting and rendering. STEP Modifications recommends in-game captures for this reason (STEP Modifications screenshot guidance).

  1. Load the unmodded or vanilla configuration and go to the chosen location.
  2. Frame the target. Match the camera angle and position you intend to use for every capture.
  3. Wait for temporary differences—such as an NPC passing through the shot or on-screen text—to disappear.
  4. Save the game or otherwise record a reproducible reference at that point.

The practical answer to “How do I make sure both screenshots show the exact same spot?” is to reload that same reference for each configuration, then avoid moving the mouse or camera if doing so changes the framing. STEP Modifications describes repeating a saved-view capture while switching between vanilla, guide, and testing profiles.

Hold the other visual variables constant

Before capturing the modded state, note the baseline settings and use them again. A difference that is not controlled can be mistaken for a mod effect.

  • Game and mod state: Record the game version, mod version, and any relevant load-order or conflict-resolution details. Change only the tested mod state between images.
  • Display: Keep resolution and aspect ratio the same. Use the same graphics settings.
  • Scene: Match the location, camera framing, and lighting. Keep time or weather consistent when the game lets you control them.
  • HUD: Hide it in both images if the game or an established HUD mod allows. Otherwise, leave it visible in both.
  • Capture path: Use the same capture software and format. Check that the saved files have the expected dimensions and that the capture process has not changed color or quality relative to the in-game image.

STEP Modifications’ goal is for only the asset replacement to differ; it recommends captures that match the in-game image in color and quality. If a setting cannot be controlled, note that limitation rather than implying the screenshots are perfectly matched.

Capture each configuration from the saved view

  1. Capture the unmodded baseline using the reference view and chosen capture method.
  2. Switch to the modded configuration, including any required profile or load-order changes.
  3. Reload the same saved reference. Do not reposition the camera unless you can reproduce the baseline framing precisely.
  4. Wait for temporary scene elements to clear, keep the HUD state unchanged, and capture with the same software and format.
  5. Check both files for matching dimensions and inspect them at the same scale before preparing a comparison.

Keep the original captures. A publishing platform may compress previews, so provide full-resolution files when readers need to inspect fine texture or artifact differences.

Present the comparison without obscuring differences

Use a labeled side-by-side view or slider, with each state clearly identified—for example, “Vanilla” and the mod name and version. Keep the screenshots aligned so corresponding details occupy the same position. NVIDIA ICAT can display up to four images or videos with side-by-side and slider views, zoom, and spatial or temporal alignment (NVIDIA ICAT).

Inspect the same regions and describe the visible result on relevant axes: texture and detail, lighting and shadows, reflections, geometry or asset changes, and artifacts. A still image is useful for static detail, but it cannot establish how an effect behaves over time. If flicker, ghosting, or another motion-sensitive effect matters, add matched video captured from the same view. NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide notes that the effect of shadow filtering on flicker and aliasing is more apparent as the camera moves (NVIDIA Control graphics and performance guide).

Keep performance claims separate from the visual comparison. A screenshot cannot substantiate a frame-rate or performance claim. If you compare performance, report the test setup and compare appropriate image-quality modes, as NVIDIA’s ICAT guidance recommends.

When higher-resolution capture is useful—and when it is not

Supersampling or a higher-resolution capture can help expose fine detail, but it is optional for an ordinary before-and-after still. The workflow is game-specific: a Steam Community guide for Garry’s Mod describes enabling driver-level supersampling to make higher resolutions available in-game, while warning that the game’s tiled poster command can introduce seams and broken reflections. Higher resolutions can also make the UI difficult to use or fail in borderless mode (Garry’s Mod Steam Community guide). Do not assume those limitations apply to every game or engine.

  • Up to 8K60 and 4K144 HDR passthrough over HDMI 2.1
  • Captures up to 4K60, 1440p144, or 1080p240 with HDR10
  • VRR and ALLM passthrough for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2
  • PCIe x4 internal card for Windows desktop PCs
  • Works with Elgato Studio, 4K Capture Utility, and OBS; 8K HDMI cable included

There is a separate caveat for NVIDIA Image Scaling: NVIDIA says software capture may record the lower, pre-upscaled resolution when the GPU performs the scaling. Driver-level capture support or a dedicated capture card may be needed for that particular capture path. NVIDIA names the Elgato 4K60 PRO MK.2 and AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K as examples; routine still comparisons do not require capture hardware (NVIDIA ICAT).

Troubleshoot mismatched or misleading screenshots

  • The camera angle or framing differs: Reload the same saved reference and avoid camera input after loading. If the game does not preserve the view, re-create it carefully and disclose that the framing is approximate.
  • Lighting or weather differs: Match time, weather, and graphics settings where possible. If those conditions are uncontrolled, capture again under closer conditions or identify the difference in the presentation.
  • NPCs, text, or other transient elements appear in only one image: Wait for them to clear in both states before capturing.
  • The HUD appears in only one image: Recapture with the same HUD state, either hidden in both or visible in both.
  • Files look softer, have different colors, or have different dimensions: Confirm that both were captured with the same method and format, then compare the saved files rather than differently scaled previews. Preserve the originals in case a platform has compressed the displayed images.
  • A tiled high-resolution image has seams or broken reflections: In Garry’s Mod, the cited guide warns about artifacts from the tiled poster command. Use an alternative capture method or a normal-resolution in-game capture if the artifact compromises the comparison; this warning is specific to that game.
  • A software capture shows the pre-upscaled resolution: If you are using GPU-side NVIDIA Image Scaling, the software capture path may record the lower input resolution. NVIDIA identifies driver-level capture support or a capture card as possible options for that workflow; neither is needed for ordinary stills.
  • The comparison looks identical but motion reveals flicker or ghosting: Add matched video. Still frames cannot show temporal behavior reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prove that a graphics mod improves performance with a screenshot?

No. A screenshot can show a visual result, but performance requires a separate measurement and a stated test setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a capture card to make a graphics-mod comparison?

Not for ordinary still screenshots. Dedicated capture hardware is only a possible workaround for the specific GPU-upscaling capture issue described above.
