On a PS5 Pro, press the Create button on the DualSense controller to capture the current screen, record what happens next, or save a portion of your recent gameplay. You can then send the capture from Recently created or Media Gallery, download eligible captures with PlayStation App, or copy files to USB storage. For the highest-resolution still image, PS5 Pro can save an 8K screenshot when the game, display, and setting all support 8K.
Choose the right capture and sharing path
The best method depends on whether you need a quick party message, a copy on your phone, or a local master file for archiving. Capture first, then choose the destination that fits the file and the way you intend to keep it.
| Goal | Use | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Save a moment immediately | Create menu and Recently created | Fastest route for sending from the console |
| Send to a phone or supported app | PlayStation App | Auto-upload is limited to eligible captures and temporary app retention |
| Keep an original file separately | Media Gallery and USB storage | Useful for transfer or preservation outside the console |
| Make a maximum-resolution still | PS5 Pro 8K Resolution Screenshot | Requires an 8K game, compatible 8K display, and the setting enabled; this applies to screenshots, not a documented 8K video mode |
Capture a screenshot or gameplay clip on PS5 Pro
Open the Create menu
- While playing, press the Create button on the DualSense wireless controller.
- Choose the capture action that matches what you want to preserve: Take Screenshot, Start New Recording, or Save Recent Gameplay.
Take Screenshot saves the current game image. Start New Recording begins recording from that moment forward. Save Recent Gameplay retrieves a selected portion of the rolling recent-gameplay buffer, which is useful when an unexpected moment has already happened.

Record forward or save what just happened
A new recording can run for up to one hour. A recent-gameplay save can cover a period from the last 15 seconds up to one hour; select the duration offered in the Create menu before saving. These are console capture capabilities, not guarantees that every destination will accept the resulting file.

To finish a recording, press Create again and select Stop Recording. Some game scenes are blocked from capture by the game or system. When that happens, the protected portion is omitted rather than included in the saved clip.
Use shortcuts when timing matters
The Create button can be configured so a press, double press, or press-and-hold performs a preferred action. Set those shortcuts in Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures. A shortcut is useful for a one-handed screenshot or for saving recent gameplay without leaving the action to navigate a menu.
Set capture format, resolution, and audio
Open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures before recording if you need a particular file type or soundtrack. The Captures area includes controls for Create button shortcuts, screenshot format, video format, video resolution, and whether audio is included.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the screenshot format that suits your editing or sharing workflow.
- Choose video format and resolution before starting a recording; changing the setting later does not restore detail that was never recorded.
- Enable microphone audio or voice-chat audio only when you want those channels in the file.
- HDR screenshots require a compatible display. Compatible displays also enable 4K recording options where supported.
If a clip looks different from the game image, check the console capture settings and the display’s HDR capability before assuming the game failed to render correctly. Capture settings apply to newly created files; they do not retroactively change captures already in Media Gallery.
Capture an 8K screenshot on PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro’s 8K screenshot option is conditional. All three requirements must be met:

- Play a game that supports 8K output on PS5 Pro.
- Connect a compatible 8K screen.
- Enable Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures > 8K Resolution Screenshot.
After the option is enabled, use Take Screenshot from the Create menu as usual. The setting concerns still screenshots. The documented support instructions do not establish that ordinary gameplay clips are recorded in 8K, so do not treat the 8K screenshot option as an 8K video setting.
Keep a local copy when full resolution matters. Sony notes that screenshots uploaded to Cloud Media Gallery are uploaded at a lower resolution, so a cloud copy is not equivalent to the original local 8K file.
Share directly from the PS5 Pro
Send from Recently created
- Open the control center and select the Recently created card.
- Choose the screenshot or clip.
- Select Share, choose the destination or recipient, and select Send.
This route is convenient immediately after a capture because the file is surfaced without requiring a separate trip through the full gallery.
Send from Media Gallery
- Open Media Gallery from the PS5 home screen.
- Select the capture you want to send.
- Choose Share, select the destination or recipient, and choose Send.
Media Gallery also lets you select multiple captures. When sharing to a group, Sony limits the batch to one video clip at a time, with that clip no longer than three minutes, or up to four screenshots at once. If a longer recording needs to reach a group, trim or split it first, or use another transfer route.
Edit before sending
For screenshots, Media Gallery provides basic crop, rotate, and text tools. For clips, you can trim the beginning or end and set a cover image. If you need effects or music, open Share Factory Studio; exported projects are saved to console storage and appear in Media Gallery for sharing.

Share and download with PlayStation App
Enable capture uploads
- In PlayStation App, open Library > Captures and enable captures if prompted.
- On the console, open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures and enable Auto-Upload when you want eligible files sent automatically.
- Link the PS5 to the app. For automatic uploads, leave the console in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Enabling the feature does not backfill older files. Captures made before activation do not appear in the app automatically, so use Media Gallery sharing or USB copy for those files.

Automatic app uploads accept gameplay videos shorter than three minutes that are not 4K, plus screenshots taken through the Create Menu or Create button shortcuts. A long local recording, a 4K clip, or a screenshot created by a route outside those supported actions may remain on the console even when Auto-Upload is enabled.
Uploaded captures remain available in the app for 14 days. Download wanted files to the phone or tablet during that window if you need to keep them longer. You can download a capture, share it to a party through Game Base, or pass it to another supported app.
Upload manually from Media Gallery
For an existing eligible capture, open Media Gallery, highlight the file, open its Options menu, and choose the upload action. Manual upload is useful when Auto-Upload was off when the file was created, but the same app eligibility rules still apply.
Understand account and data details
- PlayStation Plus is not required for PlayStation App capture sharing.
- Deleting a capture from the console does not remove its already-uploaded app copy during the 14-day availability period, provided capture sharing is enabled.
- Downloading or sharing video over mobile data can consume substantial data; use Wi-Fi when practical.
Copy captures to USB storage
USB export is the most direct way to put a local capture on a separate device for editing, backup, or transfer to a computer.

- Choose More > Copy to USB storage device.
- Safely finish the copy before disconnecting the device.
When a USB device is connected, Media Gallery displays a USB tab where compatible images and videos on that device can be viewed. Sony’s cited instructions do not specify a required capacity, speed, format, or model, so choose USB storage according to your own file-size and transfer needs rather than assuming a particular specification is guaranteed.
Include microphone and party voice audio responsibly
Capture settings can include microphone audio and voice-chat audio in clips. Decide before recording whether commentary or party conversation belongs in the file; changing the setting afterward cannot recreate audio that was not captured.
Voice-chat participants may not expect their conversation to be published. Sony’s guidance is explicit: “When including voice chat audio, make sure to ask the voice chat members if it’s alright to include their voice in your video clips.” Ask before sharing, and make a new recording with voice audio disabled if someone does not consent.
Which route should you use?
| Sharing route | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Recently created or Media Gallery | Immediate console-to-party sharing and basic editing | Group sharing has Sony’s per-message limits |
| PlayStation App | Convenient phone download and onward sharing | Requires activation, a linked console for automatic uploads, supported file characteristics, and downloading within the app’s retention period |
| USB storage | Separate local copy for preservation or computer transfer | Requires a connected USB device and a manual copy |
| Local 8K screenshot | Highest documented still-image resolution on a compatible PS5 Pro setup | Limited to supported 8K games and displays; cloud copies are lower resolution |
Troubleshoot common capture and sharing problems
The moment is missing from the clip
Use Save Recent Gameplay rather than starting a recording after the event. Confirm the recent-gameplay duration before saving, because the console can preserve only the selected portion of its rolling buffer. If the game displayed a capture-blocked scene, that section cannot be recovered in the resulting file.
The recording will not appear in PlayStation App
- Confirm captures are enabled in Library > Captures in the app and Auto-Upload is enabled on the console if you expect automatic transfer.
- Check that the PS5 is linked to the app, in Rest Mode, and set to Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Check the file itself: app auto-upload supports non-4K gameplay videos shorter than three minutes and screenshots made through the supported Create actions.
- If the file predates activation, it will not appear retroactively. Try the manual Media Gallery upload when the file meets the eligibility rules.
The app copy disappeared
PlayStation App captures are available for 14 days. Download the file to the mobile device before that period ends if it is important. An app copy that was already uploaded can remain available after the console copy is deleted, but that does not extend the app’s retention period.

An 8K screenshot is not available
Verify all three conditions: the game must support 8K on PS5 Pro, the connected screen must be compatible with 8K, and 8K Resolution Screenshot must be enabled at Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures. Do not use a lower-resolution cloud copy to judge whether the local screenshot was captured at 8K.
A group message rejects a clip or several images
Check the group-sharing limits: one video clip at a time, with the clip no longer than three minutes, or up to four screenshots. Trim the video, send files in separate messages, or use PlayStation App or USB export for a different transfer path.
The file has no commentary or party audio
Open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures and review the audio-inclusion controls before making another recording. Microphone and voice-chat audio must be enabled at capture time. If other players will be heard, obtain their permission before sharing.
USB copy or browsing does not work
Reconnect the USB device, return to Media Gallery, and look for the USB tab. Use More > Copy to USB storage device on the selected capture. Because the cited support instructions do not promise a particular drive format, capacity, speed, or model, try another compatible USB storage device if the console does not recognize the one connected.
