For a PS5, press the controller’s Create button, choose Take Screenshot, and review Capture Options before you start. Share from Recently created or Media Gallery, export to USB when you need a durable copy, and use PlayStation App only when its regional and 14-day limits suit you. On a Windows PC, use Snipping Tool for desktop regions, windows, or the whole screen, and Xbox Game Bar for screenshots during most games.
“High quality” is a workflow, not one universal setting. The game’s rendered image, console or display settings, the capture format and resolution, and any editing or sharing service all affect the result. Keep the original file before cropping, annotating, or uploading it.
What makes a screenshot high quality?
A screenshot can lose useful detail at several points: the game may render at a lower resolution, the capture tool may offer different formats, an editor may resize it, or a sharing service may recompress it. Official support guidance for PS5 and Windows confirms where capture controls are located, but it does not establish one setting that is best for every game, display, or purpose.

- Evidence or troubleshooting: capture the complete screen or window so menus, error codes, and context remain visible.
- A game image: use the game-oriented capture path and avoid overlays or notifications in the frame.
- Editing or publication: preserve the untouched original, then work on a copy.
- Physical backup: copy the original to USB storage rather than relying on a temporary app library.
- Quick mobile sharing: use an official app route when your region, console, and capture type are eligible.
Do not describe a file as lossless, universally 4K, or untouched by sharing unless you have verified the exact device, setting, and destination. The procedures below identify what each platform officially supports and where its limits apply.

Choose the capture method first

How do I take a high-quality screenshot on PS5?
1. Open the Create menu and inspect Capture Options
- Press the controller’s Create button.
- Choose Take Screenshot for an immediate still image.
- Open Capture Options before an important session. PlayStation places the available screenshot and video format and resolution controls there.
- Read the choices shown on your own console instead of assuming a particular resolution or format. The current official support description confirms the controls but does not list one fixed set of choices for every PS5.
The Create menu also includes Save Recent Gameplay and Start New Recording. Those are useful when a moment has already happened or when you need a clip, but they are separate from taking a still screenshot. Keep overlays and notifications out of the scene when composition matters; wait for a clean frame and then press Create.

2. Check and edit the image in Media Gallery
To inspect a new image, press the PS button and open the Recently created card. You can also open Media Gallery from the Games home screen. Media Gallery’s edit controls support crop, rotate/frame, and adding text. These tools are suitable for removing an unwanted edge or labeling a detail; they cannot recover detail that was never captured at the original resolution.
For fidelity, treat the first file as your master. Export or copy it before making an edit that changes the framing, dimensions, or annotations. If you only need a quick post, an edited copy may be sufficient, but keep the original for later crops or evidence.
3. Share directly from Recently created or Media Gallery
- Press PS and open the Recently created card, or launch Media Gallery.
- Select the screenshot, then choose Share.
- Add a message if needed and confirm the destination shown by your console.
PlayStation documents a maximum of four screenshots in one share. A share can include one video clip, but that video limit does not increase the number of still images you can attach. If you have more than four screenshots, send them in separate shares or use USB transfer for a batch you want to keep together. 4. Copy the original to USB for a durable backup
USB is the most explicit physical-export route in PlayStation’s support instructions. Connect compatible USB storage, open the capture in Media Gallery, select More (…), and choose Copy to USB Drive. The support page does not specify a required brand, capacity, or transfer speed, so verify that your drive is accepted by the console before relying on it for a large archive.
- Connect the USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Media Gallery and highlight the screenshot.
- Select More (…) > Copy to USB Drive.
- Safely disconnect the drive only after the copy has completed, then open the file on a computer to verify it.

PlayStation App can provide a convenient phone transfer, but it is not a permanent archive. The PS5 must be linked to the app and the capture feature enabled. Eligible screenshots and certain non-4K gameplay videos automatically upload, and the app makes those captures available for 14 days after creation. Availability is region-dependent and not every capture qualifies.
Before depending on the app, confirm that your region supports the feature, link the console, enable capture uploads, and check that the image appears in the app. Download anything you want to retain beyond the 14-day window, then keep a local or USB copy. How do I take a high-quality screenshot on a Windows PC?
Use Snipping Tool for a desktop, window, or selected region
Snipping Tool is the general-purpose choice for a browser, application, settings page, or a carefully framed portion of the desktop. Microsoft describes it this way: “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen. Use Snipping Tool to make changes or notes, then save, and share.”

- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu or Windows search.
- Choose a snip mode: freeform, rectangular, window, or full-screen.
- For a staged menu or tooltip, set a delay before selecting the area.
- Capture the screen. The image opens in Snipping Tool for editing, saving, and sharing.
- Use the editing controls for notes or simple changes. The Paint route can handle sizing, color, and other adjustments.
- Use Save as to choose a deliberate location. Microsoft says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default, but confirm the path on your installation.
Capture the entire window when context matters; use a rectangular or freeform snip when surrounding desktop content would expose private information or distract from the subject. Avoid resizing the only copy. Save the untouched capture first, then create a smaller annotated version for posting.

Use Xbox Game Bar for a screenshot during most PC games
- Launch the game and place the camera on the frame you want.
- Open Game Bar using the Windows Game Bar shortcut configured on your PC.
- Open the capture widget and select the camera / Take screenshot action.
- Verify that the image was saved before leaving the game, then copy the original to an organized folder if it matters.
Microsoft says Game Bar works with most PC games. “Most” is not a guarantee for every title, launcher, anti-cheat configuration, or graphics mode, and output options can differ between setups. If the widget does not appear or the camera action is unavailable, use the game’s own screenshot control or Snipping Tool for a non-exclusive desktop capture. Microsoft’s overview is at Game Bar.
Where Steam fits—and where it does not
Steam’s current support material discussed here focuses on Steam Game Recording and exporting a saved clip as a video file. That documentation does not establish Steam as a universal still-image tool. For a still screenshot, use the game or launcher’s current screenshot control when that is your setup, or use Game Bar if the game supports it. Treat video extraction as a separate workflow: a frame taken from a compressed clip may not match a native still capture in resolution or detail.

Developer-only option: wdcapture.exe
Microsoft documents wdcapture.exe for workflows built around Windows Graphics Capture APIs. It can save SDR stills as PNG and HDR stills as JXR. This is intended for development and testing rather than a normal gaming desktop. Choose it only when you are building a repeatable capture process and understand the command-line and HDR file requirements. For ordinary screenshots, Snipping Tool or Game Bar is simpler and easier to verify.

Save the master before changing it
Make the first save or export your untouched master. Then duplicate it for cropping, text, color changes, or resizing. This gives you a way back if an annotation hides a detail or a social platform rejects the dimensions.
Crop with a purpose
Crop away unused borders, not information the viewer needs to interpret the scene. For support requests, retain the title bar, error code, and relevant settings. For a game image, remove unrelated desktop or UI elements only after confirming that the subject remains clear.

Separate local storage from sharing
A local PS5 USB copy or a Windows file saved to a known folder is the reliable archive step. Sharing is a delivery step and may impose its own size, format, or retention rules. Keep the local original even when a message or app upload succeeds.

Troubleshooting capture and transfer problems
The PS5 image looks softer than expected
- Return to Create > Capture Options and inspect the format and resolution choices actually available on the console.
- Check whether the game itself is rendering at a lower resolution or using a performance mode; a screenshot cannot restore detail absent from the rendered frame.
- Compare the original in Media Gallery or after USB export before judging a version that has passed through a messaging or social service.
The PS5 share contains the wrong number of images
One share can contain up to four screenshots. Send another share for additional stills, or copy the collection to USB when the goal is archiving rather than messaging.
The PlayStation App does not show a capture
- Confirm that the PS5 is linked to the app and that capture uploads are enabled.
- Check regional availability and whether the specific screenshot or video is eligible.
- Remember the 14-day availability period; download important files rather than waiting for them to remain indefinitely.
Snipping Tool captured the wrong area
Choose the mode that matches the target: window for one application, rectangular for a precise region, freeform for an irregular shape, and full-screen for complete context. Use delay when a menu disappears as soon as you move the pointer. Save the result with Save as so you know exactly where the file is.
Game Bar does not capture the game
Microsoft’s wording is “most PC games,” not all games. Check that Game Bar is enabled, open the capture widget while the game has focus, and try the game or launcher’s own screenshot control if the camera action is missing. Snipping Tool can document a visible desktop or window when a game-specific path is unavailable.
A practical high-quality capture checklist
- Decide whether you need a game frame, a full screen, a window, or a selected region.
- Remove notifications, chat overlays, and unrelated windows from the composition when possible.
- On PS5, inspect Capture Options; on Windows, select the appropriate Snipping Tool mode or Game Bar capture.
- Capture the clean frame and save it without editing.
- Open the saved image and check its dimensions, framing, and legibility.
- Make edits on a copy, using crop, rotate/frame, text, Paint, or another editor only as needed.
- For PS5, use USB for a durable archive; for Windows, copy the file to a known folder or backup location.
- Share the edited derivative, not the only original, unless speed matters more than future flexibility.
UI labels, capture choices, regional availability, and supported hardware can change with software updates. If a label or option differs, use the platform’s current menu and verify the resulting file rather than assuming that an older tutorial still applies.
