To capture a game screenshot at full resolution, use a capture method that records the image at the resolution you intend to inspect, then check the saved original file’s pixel dimensions and format. For a fair comparison, capture the same scene from the same viewpoint with the same game and display settings, and compare the original files at 100% scale.
“Full resolution” can mean the game’s render resolution, the display’s output resolution, or the saved image’s pixel dimensions. Those may differ—especially when upscaling is involved—so a thumbnail or social-media copy is not enough to verify what the capture contains.
What “full resolution” means for a game screenshot
Three resolutions can matter:
- Render resolution: the dimensions at which the game renders its image.
- Display or output resolution: the dimensions sent to the monitor or other display.
- Saved-image dimensions: the width and height, in pixels, of the screenshot file.
These values can differ. For example, NVIDIA notes that with GPU-level Image Scaling, a software capture may retain the lower, pre-upscaled resolution rather than the larger displayed image. Its guidance says driver-level capture support is needed for this case and names GeForce Experience Alt+F1 screenshots as a supported option at the time of publication; check current driver behavior and settings. Choose a capture method that fits your setup
Steam Overlay for Steam games
Steam’s Overlay can capture screenshots in Steam games. F12 is the default screenshot hotkey; you can change it in Steam’s In-Game settings. The Overlay must be available for this workflow. Microsoft wdcapture for Windows SDR or HDR captures
Microsoft’s GDK command-line tool, wdcapture, uses Windows Graphics Capture. Its documented screenshot command saves SDR captures as PNG and HDR captures as JXR, supports a filepath and display selection, and requires Windows 10 or later. AMD ReLive on supported systems
AMD’s documentation describes ReLive screenshot and gameplay-capture features for supported hardware and software configurations. Capture resolution is configurable; its documentation says In-Game output automatically matches the resolution used in the game. Check the current driver’s compatibility and settings rather than assuming every system or capture mode behaves the same way. AMD ReLive FAQ

Game-native photo modes
Some games offer special high-resolution or super-resolution capture in photo mode. Look in the game’s own documentation or photo-mode settings, because this is game-specific. NVIDIA’s 2017 article about Tekken 7 describes its Super Resolution capture feature; it is a historical example, not evidence that other games have the same option. Windows desktop capture
Windows Snipping Tool can capture the full screen, but its support documentation does not establish that it preserves a game’s render resolution or HDR pipeline. Use it when a desktop capture is appropriate, then inspect the saved file rather than assuming its dimensions or dynamic range. Microsoft Snipping Tool guidance

Capture a repeatable pair of screenshots
- Choose a stable scene. Use a location and moment that you can reproduce. Keep the camera position and visible interface consistent.
- Set the conditions. Record the game resolution, display/output resolution, graphics settings, and capture method. If you are testing anti-aliasing, sharpening, or upscaling, change only that setting between captures.
- Use the same capture route for both images. A game-native, driver-level, or desktop capture can record different stages of the image pipeline. Do not switch methods midway through a comparison unless capture method itself is the variable being tested.
- Save and preserve the original files. Avoid relying on thumbnails, chat previews, or uploaded copies; a service may resize or transcode an image.
Verify the saved image dimensions and format
Open the original file in an image viewer or inspect its file properties. Record its width × height in pixels and its format. Compare those dimensions with the game’s render and display/output resolutions; do not infer them from the size at which an image appears in a web page or thumbnail.
For HDR, verify that the chosen capture route and file format retain the HDR data you need. Microsoft documents JXR for HDR output from wdcapture and PNG for SDR output. A file extension alone is not proof that another capture workflow preserved the intended HDR content.

Compare screenshots without changing what they show
- Match the scene and viewpoint. Align equivalent content and camera framing before judging image differences.
- Inspect at 100% pixel scale. Use an image viewer’s synchronized zoom if available, and inspect crops around fine detail and edges.
- Keep dimensions in view. If the files have different pixel dimensions, resizing one for a side-by-side visual comparison changes the pixel relationships. Disclose that adjustment and keep the untouched originals.
- Track the changed setting. Note which capture setting or game option differs so that a visible change has an interpretable cause.
Why a screenshot may not match the game’s displayed resolution
GPU upscaling changes the capture stage
With NVIDIA Image Scaling, the game may render below the display’s output resolution and the GPU may upscale the result. NVIDIA’s guidance warns that ordinary software capture can preserve the lower pre-upscaled resolution. Check the current driver documentation and settings for a capture path that supports the upscaled output.
Capture settings may use a different resolution
Some tools expose a capture-resolution setting. AMD’s ReLive documentation, for example, describes configurable capture resolution and says In-Game output matches the resolution used in the game. Check the selected mode and inspect the resulting file rather than treating the tool’s name or default setting as a guarantee.

Video capture behavior is not screenshot evidence
A video recorder and a still-image capture path are not interchangeable. Steam documents that Game Recording can miss frames when gameplay starts or ends, or when resolution changes.
