Use Chrome DevTools’ “Capture a full size screenshot” for a PNG, or export the Canvas to Google Docs and download a PDF. The PNG keeps the rendered appearance, while the PDF is better for printing, text selection and multi-page sharing. If the Canvas has its own scrollable pane, load that pane completely or use the export route; a browser capture can otherwise stop at the visible panel.
Google AI Mode Canvas projects can be created, saved and resumed from thread history. The exact controls can differ by account, age, region and product version, so you may see “Share and export” or “Share & export,” and some projects may not expose every export option.
Choose the format before you capture

These methods capture the rendered page or exported document, not every possible interactive state. A collapsed section, another tab or content that appears only after an interaction is not proofed merely because the visible Canvas was captured.
Open and finish rendering the Canvas project
- On a desktop browser, open Google Search and select AI Mode.
- Open the prompt controls and choose Canvas.
- Open the thread that contains the project. Canvas is designed so projects can be created, saved, edited and shared over time, and an auto-saved project can be resumed from thread history.
- Wait until the project has finished rendering. Look for incomplete text, loading indicators or empty cards before you capture.
- If the Canvas pane has its own scrollbar, scroll through it once. This gives deferred images and other lazy content a chance to load.
Keep the project open while you work. A bare command-line browser normally does not have your signed-in AI Mode session, so an authenticated project may not reproduce outside the interactive browser.

Capture a full-page PNG with Chrome DevTools
Step 1: open DevTools and the device toolbar
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows or Linux, orCmd+Shift+Ion macOS. - If the device toolbar is not visible, press
Ctrl+Shift+M(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+M(macOS).
Step 2: run the full-size command
- In the device-toolbar More options menu, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for Chrome to download the PNG.
- Open the file and inspect its bottom edge. Confirm that the final Canvas sections, images and footnotes are present rather than ending where the viewport ended.
The command captures content below the viewport that belongs to the page layout. It does not automatically turn a separate scrolling element into a longer document. If the Canvas is inside a nested scroll container, use the checks below before accepting the image.
When a nested Canvas pane is cut off
- Identify which region actually scrolls: the whole page or the Canvas pane. Scroll the pane from top to bottom once, allowing deferred content to render.
- Expand the pane if the interface offers an expand or focus control, then repeat Capture a full size screenshot.
- If the content is long, text-heavy or intended for printing, export to Docs and make the PDF instead. That route is usually more dependable for a panel that does not participate in the outer document’s height.
Do not assume a tall PNG proves that every hidden tab, collapsed section or interactive state was included. Capture those states separately if they matter to your record.
Export the Canvas to a PDF through Google Docs
Step 1: use the Canvas export control
- With the project open, select Share and export (the label may appear as Share & export).
- Choose Export to Docs when that option is available.
- Wait for the document to open in Google Docs and check that headings, equations, images and page breaks arrived as expected.
Step 2: download or print the document as PDF
- In Google Docs, use the document’s download option to choose PDF, or use the print workflow and select a PDF destination.
- Open the resulting PDF. Check page count, clipped elements, equation rendering and links before distributing it.
Google’s documented Canvas export path supports moving an artifact to Docs. Google’s help also notes that a document containing LaTeX can be exported as a PDF with a preview before download. A direct PDF control may appear for some Canvas artifacts; preview that file before relying on it.

- PDF naturally breaks a long project across pages instead of producing one extremely tall bitmap.
- Text can remain selectable when the export preserves text structure.
- The document can be reviewed and corrected before the final file is downloaded.
Export is not a pixel-identical screenshot. Reflow, fonts, page breaks and unsupported interactive elements can change the appearance, so use the PNG route when visual fidelity is the priority.

Generate a repeatable PDF with Chrome Headless
For a page that opens without an interactive sign-in barrier, Chrome Headless can print the URL directly:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf="canvas.pdf" "PAGE_URL"Replace PAGE_URL with the page address you want to print. If the Canvas needs time to render, add a delay such as:
chrome --headless --timeout=5000 --print-to-pdf="canvas.pdf" "PAGE_URL"Use a delay that matches the page rather than assuming five seconds is always sufficient. To remove browser-generated header and footer text, add:
chrome --headless --no-pdf-header-footer --print-to-pdf="canvas.pdf" "PAGE_URL"These flags are useful for scheduled or repeatable captures, but a signed-in AI Mode Canvas usually cannot be reproduced with a bare headless command. In that case, perform the export in the interactive browser, or use an automation setup that deliberately supplies the required authenticated session and complies with your account’s terms.

Screenshot versus PDF: a practical decision

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete capture
The image ends at the viewport
Cause: the full-size command was not used, or the content is inside a separate scrolling pane. Fix: open DevTools’ device toolbar, choose More options → Capture a full size screenshot, then scroll the Canvas pane completely and repeat. If it still stops at the pane boundary, export to Docs and create a PDF.
Images or cards are blank
Cause: deferred or lazy content had not loaded. Fix: wait for the project to finish rendering and scroll through the Canvas once before capture. Reopen the downloaded file and inspect the lower sections, not just the top.
“Export to Docs” is missing
Cause: availability varies by artifact, account, region and product version. Fix: check the Share and export/Share & export menu for a direct PDF option, or use the DevTools PNG route. If the project is editable, copy its supported content into a Google Doc and export from there.
The PDF has unexpected page breaks or changed styling
Cause: PDF export lays content out as a document instead of preserving the browser pixels. Fix: preview the document, adjust page setup in Docs where available, and use the PNG when the exact Canvas appearance matters.

The headless PDF is blank or shows a sign-in page
Cause: the command opened a fresh browser without your authenticated AI Mode session, or rendering finished after the print occurred. Fix: use the interactive export, provide an empirically suitable --timeout, and test the URL in a normal browser before automating it.
The downloaded file is not the latest version
Cause: the project was captured before the latest edit finished saving or rendering. Fix: wait for the updated content, confirm it in the Canvas, then capture again. Keep the project thread available so you can resume the auto-saved version if the tab is closed.

Reliability and privacy checks before you share a file
- Open the final PNG or PDF, not just the download notification.
- Check the bottom of a PNG and the last page of a PDF for clipped content.
- Look for personal prompts, private thread text, account details or hidden project instructions before distribution.
- For a long-running process, record the project URL, capture time, browser or API method and the output filename so another person can reproduce the result.
- If you need a legally or operationally significant record, preserve the original project or exported document alongside the image or PDF; a screenshot alone does not establish that every interactive state was shown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a Canvas that is only visible after signing in?
Use the interactive browser session in which the project is open. A bare Chrome Headless command or a public screenshot request generally does not carry your Google login session.
Will a full-size screenshot include a collapsed Canvas section?
No. It captures the rendered page, not states that are hidden or revealed only after another interaction. Expand important sections before capturing them.
Which output is easier to search later?
A PDF made through Docs is usually more useful when its text remains selectable; a PNG stores the Canvas as pixels.
