Yes—you can cancel or downgrade Google AI Plus without deleting your Google files. Google AI Plus is a Google One membership with storage shared by Gmail, Drive and Google Photos. A downgrade keeps your current allowance until the next billing cycle, while a cancellation removes the expanded allowance at the end of the cycle. Your files are not immediately erased, but an account that is over its replacement quota loses several services and can eventually face deletion if it remains over quota.
The safest sequence is to check your usage, make sure the destination plan can hold it, export anything that will not fit, verify the copies, and then change the membership.
Choose between a downgrade and a full cancellation
Both actions are made through Google One membership controls, but they solve different problems. Choose the path that matches the amount of data you intend to keep in Google’s storage.

| Downgrade to another Google One plan | Your current plan remains active through the billing period. The lower plan starts at the beginning of the next billing cycle. The new quota is the amount shown for the plan you select. | You still need paid storage, but 400 GB is more than you require. |
| Cancel Google AI Plus | The expanded storage and AI Plus benefits continue until the end of the billing period. After that, the account returns to Google’s no-charge personal storage allowance. | Your data fits within the no-charge allowance, or you have moved or downloaded the excess data. |
| Move copies elsewhere | A transfer or Takeout export creates copies at another destination. It does not, by itself, remove the originals from your Google Account. | You want to leave Google storage while retaining an independent copy. |
Do not treat a downgrade as an immediate reduction. Google applies it at the next billing-cycle start, giving you time to prepare. A cancellation also remains effective until the current period ends, so use that window to complete an export and cleanup.

Check the account and billing source first
Before changing anything, confirm which Google Account owns the membership. If you use several accounts in the same browser or on the same phone, changing the wrong account will not affect the storage you intended to change.
- Open Google One while signed in to the account that contains the AI Plus membership.
- Review the storage indicator and note how much space Gmail, Drive and Google Photos are using together. The allowance is shared, so unused space in one service can be consumed by another.
- Record the renewal or end date shown in the membership controls. That is the date on which a downgrade or cancellation takes effect, not necessarily the day you press the button.
- Check who bills you. If the subscription was purchased through a mobile carrier or another third-party provider, Google says the change must be managed through that provider’s billing controls.
If the membership page shows a different account, switch accounts before proceeding. Keep the account’s confirmation emails because they establish which change was requested and when.
How to downgrade Google AI Plus
A downgrade is the least disruptive option when your files will fit inside a lower paid quota. Google displays the plans available to your account; the exact capacities and prices can vary by region, account and billing arrangement.
- Open Google One and select Manage membership.
- Choose Change membership plan.
- Under Downgrade options, select the lower plan you want.
- Read the storage allowance, price and billing details shown on the review screen. Make sure the new quota is larger than your expected usage, not merely larger than today’s free space.
- Confirm the change, then check the effective date. Google says the downgrade begins at the start of the next billing cycle.
If no downgrade option appears, Google says the account is already on the lowest plan available to it. That is different from a temporary page error; there may simply be no lower Google One tier for that account or region.
How to cancel Google AI Plus
Cancel only after checking that your data will fit the storage you will have after the membership ends, or after creating a verified copy of anything that will not fit.

- Open Google One’s membership controls and select Manage membership.
- Choose Cancel membership. Google’s cancellation flow may first open the Google One settings page.
- Review the end date and the list of benefits that will stop. The expanded storage and AI Plus benefits remain available until that date.
- Confirm Cancel membership.
- Keep the confirmation email and take a screenshot of the displayed end date if you need an offline record.
A successful cancellation does not normally remove files on the confirmation day. It schedules the loss of the paid allowance for the end of the billing period.
What happens to Gmail, Drive and Google Photos after the paid storage ends
Google AI Plus includes 400 GB of shared storage, as listed on Google’s 2026 Google One product information. When the membership ends, Google says the account has up to 15 GB of no-charge personal storage. The important question is whether your combined usage is at or below that replacement quota.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If usage is above the quota, Google applies restrictions rather than instantly deleting the files. The services affected are different, so an account can appear normal in one area while another function has already stopped.
| Service or content | Effect while the account is over quota |
|---|---|
| Gmail | You cannot send or receive messages. Messages sent to the account are returned to the sender. |
| Google Drive | Drive cannot sync or upload new files. |
| New Google files | You cannot create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Vids files. |
| Existing Drive files | Google states: “Until you reduce the amount of storage you use, no one can edit or copy your files.” Existing files are restricted even though they have not been immediately deleted. |
| Google Photos | New photos and videos cannot be backed up. |
| Long-term over-quota status | Google says that if an account remains over quota for two years or longer, all content may be deleted. |
This is why cancellation can feel harmless on the first day and still become serious later. You may retain access to existing content for a period, but mail delivery, synchronization, creation and collaboration can stop as soon as the paid quota disappears. The two-year policy is a possible deletion outcome, not a promise that files will remain indefinitely.
Complete this safety checklist before changing the plan
- Measure the current total. Compare the account’s combined Gmail, Drive and Photos usage with the quota of the plan you will have after the change.
- Decide what must stay online. Mark files and photo libraries that need continued Google sharing, editing or automatic backup. Those items require room in the replacement quota.
- Export anything that will not fit. Use Google Takeout for a downloadable archive, or use Google Photos’ transfer flow when a copy at another service is the goal.
- Provide enough destination space. A Takeout archive can be much larger than the free space on a laptop. An external hard drive is an optional local destination when the computer’s internal storage is too small.
- Wait for the export and verify it. Open representative documents, photographs and videos from the downloaded archive or destination. Check that the files you care about are readable before deleting originals.
- Only then confirm the downgrade or cancellation. Keep the membership confirmation and monitor the account after the effective date.
Use Google Takeout for a complete downloadable copy
Google Account Help’s download procedure is the general-purpose way to create an archive of data from the products you select. It is useful when the replacement quota is too small or when you want a local backup before making a permanent storage decision.

Select the products and delivery method
- Open Google’s Google Takeout export tool while signed in to the correct account.
- Select the Google products you need. Include Gmail, Drive and Google Photos if all three contribute to your storage use; selecting only one product will not protect data stored in the others.
- Choose the delivery destination offered by the export flow. You can have Google prepare a download link or use another available delivery option.
- Set the archive format and a maximum archive size. Smaller maximum sizes create multiple archive files, which can be easier to download but harder to organize.
- Create the export and wait for Google to finish preparing it. Large photo or Drive libraries can take time.
Download and verify the archive
Google Account Help says Takeout archives expire in about seven days after creation. Download every archive before that window closes and store it on a computer or external drive with sufficient free space. If the download link expires, create a new export rather than assuming the old link will return.
Open a representative sample from each product: a document from Drive, several message or attachment files from Gmail, and photographs and videos from Photos. Verify that file names, dates and formats are usable at the destination. Do not delete Google originals merely because an archive folder exists.
Downloading is a copy operation. Google’s Account Help wording is explicit: “If you download your Google data, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.” You still need to remove data from the Google Account separately if your goal is to bring usage under a lower quota.
Transfer Google Photos when another service will hold the library
Google also provides a transfer flow for Google Photos. It copies photos and videos to another service while leaving the originals in the Google Account. That makes it useful for migration, but it does not reduce Google storage until you verify the destination and delete the originals yourself.
- Check that the destination has enough capacity for the library and accepts the file types and sizes involved.
- Review the destination’s sharing and privacy rules before starting a transfer.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then open files at the destination and confirm that important albums or dates are present.
- Only after verification should you decide whether to delete Google copies to release space.
A Photos transfer and a Takeout archive serve different purposes. Transfer is convenient for placing copies in another service; Takeout gives you a downloadable archive that you control locally.

Get under the new quota if you are keeping a lower plan
If your intended plan is smaller than your current usage, make a reduction plan before the billing date. Work from the largest categories first so that each deletion has a measurable effect.
- Identify the largest files in Drive. Remove obsolete installers, duplicate videos and old project archives. Download anything you may need later before deleting it.
- Review Gmail attachments. Search for messages with large attachments, save required attachments to your verified archive, and remove messages that no longer need to remain online.
- Review Google Photos videos. Videos usually consume more space than still images. Keep the versions you need in the destination you verified and remove redundant copies from Google Photos only when ready.
- Empty the relevant trash areas. Deleted items can continue to occupy storage until they are permanently removed, so check Drive, Gmail and Photos after your cleanup.
- Recheck the combined storage figure. Do not rely on the size of one folder or one product; the quota is shared across all three services.
Leave a margin below the quota rather than aiming for an exact match. New mail, photo backups or shared files can push an account over the limit again.
Compare the three practical exit strategies
| Factor | Downgrade | Cancel | Export or transfer first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage after the billing period | The quota of the selected lower Google One plan. | Up to 15 GB of no-charge personal storage. | Depends on the plan you keep; the external copy does not change Google’s quota by itself. |
| When the change applies | Start of the next billing cycle. | End of the current billing cycle. | Export timing is separate; membership timing still follows the chosen downgrade or cancellation. |
| Recurring cost | Lower than AI Plus; the exact amount is shown during plan selection. | No recurring AI Plus charge after the current period, subject to the billing arrangement. | Destination cost and capacity depend on the service or device you choose. |
| AI Plus benefits | Benefits tied to AI Plus end when that membership ends. | Benefits end at the cancellation effective date. | An export preserves data, not the membership benefits. |
| Main risk | Choosing a quota that is still smaller than actual usage. | Going over the no-charge quota and losing mail, sync, upload or editing functions. | Deleting originals before checking that the copy is complete and readable. |
What to check after the change takes effect
- Open Google One and confirm the membership status and the new storage allowance.
- Compare the displayed usage with the new quota. If the account is over, begin cleanup immediately rather than waiting for a service failure.
- Send a test email to the account and check that it can receive mail if Gmail is important to you.
- Upload a small, nonessential file to Drive and check synchronization only when the account is within quota.
- Check that Google Photos backup is still enabled and has room for new items.
- Keep the export or transferred copies until you have used the destination successfully for a reasonable period.
These checks distinguish a billing change from an account problem. A downgrade that has not reached its effective date should still show the old allowance; a cancellation should continue to show benefits until the end date.
Troubleshooting common problems
No lower plan appears
Google says that no downgrade option means the account is already on the lowest available plan. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and that the page is not showing a different membership. If the subscription is billed by a carrier or another provider, use that provider’s account controls instead of Google One’s plan selector.

The account is still showing AI Plus after cancellation
That is expected when the current billing period has not ended. Use the displayed end date as the cutoff. The paid allowance and benefits should remain available until then; do not delete files early unless you have independently verified your backup.
Storage restrictions begin after a downgrade
Compare actual combined usage with the lower plan’s quota. Remove or export enough data to create headroom, then recheck Gmail, Drive and Photos. If you need to preserve the data, do not use deletion as the first step—make and verify a Takeout archive or Photos transfer first.
A Takeout download link has expired
Google says archives expire in about seven days. Start a new export and download all resulting archive parts before the new expiration window. An expired link does not indicate that the originals were deleted.
Recommended Free Tools
A file is missing from the destination
Pause deletion in Google, inspect the export selections and archive parts, and create a narrower product export if necessary. For Photos transfers, check the destination account and its import status. Keep the Google originals until the missing item is located or another verified copy exists.
Make the change without losing access
The reliable order is simple: identify the account and billing source, measure shared storage, choose a quota that can hold what remains, export or transfer anything else, verify the copies, and then downgrade or cancel through the exact Google One membership controls. The files are not immediately erased when the paid plan ends, but staying over quota can disable core services and, after two years or more over quota, may lead to deletion under Google’s policy.
