Cancel a video-game preorder through the exact store or retailer that accepted the order—not through the console, bank, or publisher in general. Open that seller’s Order history or preorder page immediately, check whether the game has been billed, downloaded, preloaded, or shipped, and use the available cancellation or payment-update control.
Deadlines differ. Some digital stores collect payment shortly before release and block cancellation once payment or preload begins; physical orders may become non-cancelable when processing or shipping starts. Save the confirmation, then check whether any remaining card entry is a temporary authorization or a completed charge.
Start with the seller, order type, and current status
A preorder is governed by the terms of the storefront or retailer shown on your receipt. A console maker’s digital store, a publisher’s checkout, a direct-to-consumer hardware store, and a third-party retailer can all use different billing and cancellation triggers.
- Identify the seller: Check the receipt, confirmation email, or card statement for the merchant name and sign in to that account.
- Identify the order: Record the order number, title, platform, edition, and scheduled release date.
- Identify the format: Digital orders follow download, preload, payment, and refund rules. Physical orders follow processing, shipment, delivery, and return rules.
- Check the status: Look for labels such as “preordered,” “processing,” “preload available,” “shipped,” “billed,” or “payment authorization.”
Do not assume that deleting an installed game, removing a payment card from a wallet, canceling the card itself, or disputing a pending authorization cancels the order. Those actions can leave the preorder active or create a separate payment problem.

The table separates digital storefront rules from physical-order rules. “Not stated” means the cited policy does not provide a universal value; the order page controls in that situation.

How to cancel a preorder safely
- Open the seller’s order page. Sign in through the same account used at checkout. Go to Order history, Transaction history, or the retailer’s preorder section.
- Open the exact order. Match the title, edition, platform, and order number. If you have several editions or bundles, cancel only the unwanted line item.
- Read the current status before clicking. Note whether payment is pending or posted, whether a download or preload has started, and whether a physical item is processing or shipped.
- Select Cancel, Request refund, or the equivalent control. Follow the confirmation screen all the way through; closing the page after selecting an option is not proof that the order stopped.
- Save evidence. Download or capture the confirmation number, timestamp, refund amount, and email. Keep the original receipt until the account and payment statement both reflect the change.
- Check the payment account. A pending authorization may remain temporarily even after cancellation. A posted payment requires confirmation of the seller’s refund, not merely a cancellation-screen message.
- Escalate in the right order. Contact the seller with the order number first. If the seller confirms that a temporary authorization should have cleared but it remains beyond the stated period, ask the card issuer to investigate the authorization.
Platform-specific instructions and traps
PlayStation Store digital preorders
Use the account’s transaction history or the platform’s support route to request a refund. The refund page distinguishes orders placed more than 14 days before release from those placed less than 14 days before release. In both situations, the request must satisfy the applicable timing window and the main game must not have been downloaded or preloaded. After release, the page applies its own request window and content conditions.
Preorder bonuses are a separate consequence: bonus content that was accessible before cancellation stops working when the preorder is canceled. Local-law rights and content-specific terms can also affect the result, so read the eligibility message attached to the transaction rather than relying on the release date alone.

PlayStation Direct physical preorders
Open the order details page and look for the cancellation button. If shipping has not begun, use that control and save the confirmation. The store also provides an address-change control before its stated cutoff; changing an address is not the same as canceling the order.
A temporary card preauthorization can lower available credit without being a final charge. If the order has shipped and the cancellation button is gone, do not open or redeem the item until you have checked the applicable return instructions.
Microsoft Store
Go to your Microsoft account’s Order history, select the preorder, and choose the online cancellation option if it is available. To keep the order but replace the card or other payment source, update payment information before billing and confirm that the new method is displayed on the order.

If the order was billed and is canceled before release, Microsoft states that it processes the cancellation as a refund. If authorization fails, the store may retry before launch and cancel the preorder if collection still fails, so update the payment method promptly rather than waiting for release day.

Change the preferred payment method in Nintendo Account settings, then verify the new method before the collection point. Nintendo collects preorder payment no sooner than seven days before release, but the practical cutoff is earlier if payment has already been processed and the game preloaded.
Nintendo’s general digital-products policy treats payments as final unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. That makes checking the preload and payment status especially important before attempting cancellation.

Best Buy orders
Open the order details page and use its cancellation option while it is shown. The retailer’s general U.S. help page warns that some digital downloads, including game downloads, cannot be canceled. If the button is missing, contact support with the order number and ask whether the item is already in digital fulfillment or shipment.
Amazon Luna PC preorders
For a PC game preorder purchased specifically through Amazon Luna, cancel before release through the Luna order controls. The stated full-refund condition requires that no part of the preorder has been redeemed or claimed. This rule should not be extended to marketplace sellers, physical Amazon orders, or unrelated Amazon products.

Other physical retailers
Use the retailer named on the receipt. A physical preorder can become non-cancelable when warehouse processing or shipping begins, even if the release date is still ahead. Once shipped, compare the item’s return policy with its condition: opening packaging, activating a code, or using a disc can remove return eligibility.

Changing the payment method without creating a second order
Payment changes are safest before the seller attempts collection. Open the order itself, choose its payment-edit control if available, select an existing method or add the replacement, and save. Then reopen the order and verify the last four digits or other identifier shown by the seller.
- Updating a wallet’s default card may not update an existing preorder; confirm the method on the individual order.
- Do not place a second preorder until the first order is confirmed canceled. Otherwise, both orders may remain active.
- Keep enough available credit for a temporary authorization even when the final charge is scheduled later.
- If payment has already posted, ask the seller about a refund rather than assuming that editing the card will reverse it.
Why a “charge” may still appear after cancellation
Pending authorization
A pending entry is a temporary hold that checks whether funds or credit are available. It can reduce your available balance and remain visible after the seller releases the order. The PlayStation Direct policy, for example, describes authorizations that may last approximately 1–8 days depending on the financial institution.
Posted payment
A posted transaction has completed collection. Cancellation does not erase it instantly; the seller must issue a refund, and the card issuer then posts that refund according to its processing cycle. Keep the seller’s refund confirmation and compare the amount, currency, and order number.
Duplicate-looking entries
Two pending entries can represent an authorization and a later capture, or separate attempts after a failed payment. Ask the seller which transaction is tied to the order before disputing anything. A bank dispute is not a substitute for canceling an active preorder.
When the cancel button is missing
- Digital game downloaded or preloaded: Stop further downloads and read the store’s refund conditions; deleting local files does not undo the download event.
- Payment already processed: Use the seller’s refund request path and retain the confirmation.
- Physical order processing or shipped: Review return eligibility before opening, activating, or redeeming the item.
- Release date changed: Recheck the order page because some stores calculate authorization or shipping cutoffs from the currently scheduled date.
- Account access problem: Contact the seller with the receipt and order number; do not create a second account or reorder while the status is unresolved.
Final checklist before you walk away
- The seller and order number match the charge.
- The order page shows canceled, refunded, or the intended payment method.
- No automatic download, preload, redemption, or claim remains active.
- You saved the confirmation email or reference number.
- You checked whether the card entry is pending or posted.
- You know the return deadline and condition rules if a physical item has shipped.
- You will follow up with the seller before contacting the card issuer about a transaction that has not cleared.
The reliable sequence is simple: identify the exact seller, act before its billing, preload, processing, or shipping trigger, verify the result, and distinguish a temporary authorization from a completed payment. Those checks prevent most unwanted preorder charges without risking a duplicate order or an avoidable return problem.
