Cancel the subscription with the company that bills you, save proof of the request, and check later statements for continued charges. Your credit freeze is a separate control managed by Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion; canceling a paid identity-protection service does not itself ask a bureau to lift a freeze. If you want a freeze in place, verify it directly with all three bureaus.
Canceling the subscription does not cancel your credit freeze
An identity-protection subscription and a bureau credit freeze do different jobs. The subscription company handles its service and billing. A credit bureau manages whether a lender can access your credit file to open new credit. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that freezes are free to place and lift, and remain in effect until you lift them.
So if your goal is to stop paying for monitoring or other subscription features while continuing to restrict access to your credit files, take two separate actions: cancel the subscription with its billing provider, then confirm the freeze with each bureau. Do not assume the service provider placed, maintains, or controls the bureau freeze for you.

A freeze is a separate instruction associated with your credit file at a bureau. The FTC’s September 2025 freeze guidance says a freeze lasts until you lift it. That status is not automatically changed when a different company closes your subscription.

Likewise, a subscription may include a product described as a credit lock or another account feature. Do not treat a commercial lock as the same thing as a bureau credit freeze. If you want the bureau control, verify that control directly with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion rather than relying on the name or branding of a paid plan.
How to cancel the subscription safely
1. Identify who bills you
Check your card or bank statement, account emails, and the original subscription terms for the merchant or billing name. If a payment intermediary processed the subscription, check its current cancellation instructions as well as the service provider’s. This helps you direct the request to the party that can stop the charge.
Use more than one clue if the statement name is unfamiliar. Search the email account associated with the service for the welcome message, renewal notice, receipt, or original terms. Compare the billing description with the provider name shown in the account. The company whose name appears on a statement may differ from the brand used to advertise the service, so identify both the service and the party involved in billing before you send a cancellation request.

It only means you should check the intermediary’s current cancellation process as well as the service provider’s. The aim is to make sure your request reaches the channel that controls renewal and billing, while leaving your separate bureau instructions alone.
2. Use a verified cancellation route
Find the company that runs the subscription and follow its current instructions. The FTC’s September 2024 subscription guidance says: “If you want to stop a subscription: First, look up the company that runs the subscription you want to cancel. If the company has instructions on how to cancel, follow those.” Use a route you independently verify through the provider’s official account or website; do not rely on an unverified phone number or link in a renewal message.
Start from the provider’s official account or website rather than an unexpected renewal message. This avoids relying on a link or number that you have not independently checked. Follow the current instructions that apply to your account, and retain a copy of what you submit. If the service directs you to a payment intermediary for cancellation, use the intermediary’s own current instructions too.
The cancellation method, deadline, billing cutoff, refund eligibility, and access to the account afterward depend on the provider and contract. Because those details vary, review the terms that apply to your account and look for a cancellation confirmation rather than assuming that submitting a request ends billing immediately.
In particular, do not assume that cancellation takes effect on the day you start the process, that a partial refund will be issued, or that you will continue to have access to every account feature afterward. The provider’s terms and confirmation are the place to check those points. Without a named service and contract, there is no universal cancellation button, phone number, notice period, refund rule, or guarantee about post-cancellation access.

3. Keep a record
Save a copy of the cancellation request and any confirmation. For a phone call or chat, note the date, the channel, what was requested, and any confirmation number. The FTC recommends keeping cancellation records; they can help if you need to question a later charge.
A useful record can be simple: keep the confirmation email or screenshot, note when and how you made the request, and save any response that identifies the account or request. For a call or chat, write down the date, the channel, what you asked the representative to do, and any reference or confirmation number supplied. Keep the record somewhere you can find it alongside later statements.
Evidence matters because a charge may appear after you believe you canceled, and you may need to explain when and how you made the request. A record does not guarantee a particular refund or outcome, but it gives you facts to use when you contact the company or card issuer. Do not discard the confirmation just because the account no longer appears active.
4. Review later statements
Check subsequent card or bank statements for charges from the subscription or billing intermediary. If a charge continues after you canceled, contact your card issuer to dispute it and keep related correspondence and notes. A cancellation request and a bureau freeze are separate matters: a billing problem does not, by itself, change a freeze.
Look for the billing name you identified, including a payment intermediary if one handled the transaction. If a charge appears, compare its date and description with your cancellation record and the terms for your account. Contact your card issuer to dispute a continued charge, and keep copies of any letters or messages and notes about your conversations. The FTC’s September 2024 advice on subscriptions recommends monitoring statements and disputing charges that continue after cancellation.
Keep the two follow-up tasks distinct. Resolving a charge with a provider or card issuer addresses billing; confirming a freeze with a bureau addresses credit-file access. Neither action substitutes for the other.
Confirm your credit freeze with all three bureaus
A freeze is not automatically in place just because you subscribed to an identity-protection service. Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion through their official channels and confirm the status of your file at each. IdentityTheft.gov’s “Recovery Steps” page lists the bureaus’ contact pages and phone numbers. A freeze with one bureau does not substitute for contacting the other two.
Think of this as a separate three-part check: verify the status with Equifax, verify it with Experian, and verify it with TransUnion. Do not infer that all three are frozen because one bureau confirms a freeze or because a paid service sent an alert. IdentityTheft.gov provides bureau contact information for this purpose. Use the official channels, and keep track of which bureau you contacted and what status it confirmed.

The FTC’s September 2025 guidance states that a freeze is free and lasts until lifted. It also describes a freeze as something a consumer can request “anytime, for any reason.” The freeze does not affect your credit score, but it can prevent a lender from accessing the report needed to open new credit. It is not a guarantee against every kind of identity theft: it does not stop charges on existing accounts or prevent misuse that does not depend on opening credit using your credit file.
A freeze is therefore a targeted barrier, not an all-purpose identity-theft service. Its purpose is to restrict access to a credit report for opening new credit. Continue paying attention to existing financial accounts and statements, because a freeze does not block transactions on an account that is already open. If you see unfamiliar activity, address it with the institution that holds the account rather than expecting a freeze to reverse or stop it.
Freeze, fraud alert, and monitoring: what changes when you cancel?
These protections are not interchangeable. IdentityTheft.gov and the FTC describe them as distinct tools with different purposes and procedures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Protection | What it does | Who you contact | Duration or removal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. | Free; remains until you lift it. You may temporarily lift it for an application and restore it afterward. |
| Fraud alert | Asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit; it does not restrict access in the same way as a freeze. | IdentityTheft.gov says a one-year fraud alert can be placed with one bureau, which must notify the others. | The cited IdentityTheft.gov page describes a one-year alert. Contact the bureau to remove or renew it as appropriate. |
| Paid identity-protection or credit-monitoring service | May provide alerts, monitoring, recovery assistance, or insurance, depending on the plan. Monitoring does not catch every kind of misuse. | Cancel with the company or billing provider responsible for the subscription. | Features and post-cancellation terms depend on the service and contract. |
The differences matter when choosing what to keep. A freeze restricts access to the report and requires you to deal separately with all three bureaus. A one-year fraud alert works differently: IdentityTheft.gov says you can place it with one bureau, which then notifies the others, and it asks creditors to take steps to verify identity. Monitoring is a commercial service that may notify you about certain activity, depending on its coverage, but it does not itself create a bureau freeze or guarantee that every misuse will be detected.
The FTC advises asking which bureaus a credit-monitoring service covers. If you are deciding whether to retain another service, check the actual plan for which bureaus are monitored, what alerts it provides, whether recovery assistance or insurance is included, and what exclusions apply. A paid service is not required to place or keep a bureau freeze.
When comparing services, look at the particular features rather than relying on a broad label such as “identity protection.” Ask which bureaus are monitored, what types of alerts are provided, whether recovery assistance is included, whether any insurance is included, and what the plan excludes. Those are plan-specific features, not universal characteristics of every subscription. Monitoring also has limits: the FTC notes that it does not catch every kind of misuse.
This comparison can help you decide what you are giving up when you cancel, without confusing that decision with the freeze. If you no longer want a paid plan, you can cancel it while retaining a free bureau freeze. If you want continued alerts or recovery support, compare the actual terms and coverage of any service you consider. Neither choice requires you to lift a freeze.

Plan for a future credit application
A lender may need access to your credit report to review an application. If you know which bureau the lender will use, the FTC says you can contact that bureau to arrange access; after the lender’s check, you can put the freeze back. If you do not know which report the lender will request, ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it uses before arranging a lift. A freeze can remain in place when you are not applying for credit.

Plan the temporary lift around the application, not around the end of your subscription. The FTC’s September 2025 guidance explains that you may contact the bureau whose report the lender will use, then restore the freeze after the check. If the lender identifies more than one bureau, the relevant bureau instructions may need to be addressed separately. Do not assume that a subscription company can arrange access for a lender or restore a bureau freeze on your behalf.
Keep track of which bureau you contacted and whether you restored the freeze after the application. A subscription company cannot make that decision for the bureaus simply by ending your membership.
If you are unsure which report will be used, ask the lender before arranging access. That keeps the request focused on the bureau or bureaus needed for the application. When the check is over, confirm that the freeze is back in place with the relevant bureau or bureaus. The ability to arrange a temporary lift is not a reason you must leave a freeze lifted when you are not applying for credit.
What to do if you suspect identity theft
A freeze is a barrier to certain new-credit applications, not a complete identity-theft response. If you see unfamiliar activity on an existing account, contact the financial institution that issued it. For suspected identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery guidance to identify appropriate next steps. Keep monitoring accounts and statements you still use, because a freeze does not stop transactions on existing accounts.
The FTC’s “What To Know About Identity Theft” distinguishes monitoring, recovery services, freezes, and insurance. Consider the protections a service actually supplied before canceling, but do not mistake monitoring for prevention: an alert may help you notice some activity, while it cannot guarantee detection of every misuse.
It can help to separate the question “What does this subscription provide?” from “Is my credit file frozen?” Review the plan for its stated monitoring, alerts, recovery assistance, insurance, and exclusions. Separately, verify the freeze with each bureau. If a problem concerns a current account, contact the institution that issued it; if you suspect identity theft, follow IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery guidance. A paid service can be one part of a response, but it does not replace those direct steps.

- Identify the merchant or intermediary that bills you.
- Use cancellation instructions verified through the provider’s official account or website.
- Save the request, confirmation, and notes about any calls or chats.
- Review later statements and dispute continued charges with your card issuer.
- Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion directly to verify freeze status.
- If you apply for credit, coordinate any temporary lift with the bureau or bureaus the lender will use, then restore the freeze.
- Keep billing records separate from notes about bureau freeze status and any temporary lifts.
- Continue checking existing accounts, since a freeze does not stop charges on them.
The sequence is straightforward: find the responsible billing party, follow its verified cancellation process, keep proof, and check later statements. Independently verify the freeze with each of the three bureaus. If a lender later needs a report, arrange a temporary lift with the appropriate bureau and restore the freeze after the check.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will canceling identity theft protection unfreeze my credit?
No. Canceling a paid subscription is a billing action with the service provider or billing intermediary. A bureau freeze is managed separately by Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Confirm the freeze directly with each bureau; do not assume that canceling a subscription changes it.

Do I have to freeze my credit with each bureau?
Yes. To place or verify a freeze, contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. A freeze with one bureau does not substitute for contacting the other two. IdentityTheft.gov lists each bureau’s contact information.
Is a credit freeze free, and how long does it last?
The FTC says a freeze is free to place and lift and remains in effect until you lift it. It does not affect your credit score.
Will a freeze stop all identity theft or charges on my accounts?
No. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit. It does not stop charges on existing accounts or prevent every kind of misuse. Contact the financial institution that issued an account if you see unfamiliar activity.

How do I cancel if I do not know which company is billing me?
Check your card or bank statement, account emails, receipts, and original subscription terms for the merchant and service names. If a payment intermediary handled the billing, check its current cancellation instructions as well as the service provider’s.
What should I do if the service charges me after I cancel?
Keep your cancellation request, confirmation, and notes about calls or chats. Contact your card issuer to dispute a charge that continues after cancellation, and keep related correspondence and notes. Exact cancellation timing and refund terms depend on the provider and your contract.
Is a fraud alert the same as a credit freeze?
No. A freeze restricts access to a credit report for opening new credit. A fraud alert asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity and does not restrict access in the same way. IdentityTheft.gov says a one-year fraud alert can be placed with one bureau, which must notify the others.
What if I need to apply for credit while my file is frozen?
Ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it will use. The FTC says you can contact the relevant bureau to arrange a temporary lift for the check, then put the freeze back afterward.
The Bottom Line
Cancel the subscription through the company or billing provider’s verified instructions, keep proof, and review later statements for continued charges. Then verify your free freeze directly with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Ending a paid identity-protection service does not itself lift a bureau freeze, and a freeze does not stop charges on existing accounts.
