To stop an Android app subscription from renewing, cancel it through the provider that bills you. If Google Play handles the subscription, open Google Play, select the Google Account that made the purchase, go to Subscriptions, choose the subscription, tap Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts. Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing, and cancellation is not the same as requesting a refund.
Cancel a subscription billed through Google Play
Google Play’s documented cancellation flow is short, but the account matters: the subscription is associated with the Google Account used to buy it. If you have more than one account on your Android device, check the account selector before looking for the subscription. The key is to use the Google Play account that owns the billing arrangement, not simply whichever account happens to be selected when you open the app.
- Open the Google Play app and confirm that the selected Google Account is the one that purchased the subscription.
- Open Subscriptions in Google Play.
- Select the subscription you want to end.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the confirmation email or return to the subscription in Google Play and check its status to verify that the change went through.
Google’s instructions are in Cancel, pause, or change a subscription on Google Play. Labels and navigation can vary as the app interface changes, so use the Subscriptions area and follow the cancellation screen rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps beyond that point. Read each prompt and finish the flow; opening a cancellation screen or choosing a different option is not the same as confirming cancellation.

Do not uninstall as a substitute
Removing the app from your phone does not end its subscription. Google Play states: “When you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.” Cancel it through Google Play or the provider responsible for billing before assuming future charges have stopped. Deleting an app can remove it from the device while leaving the payment arrangement untouched.
This matters even if you no longer use the app, have deleted your account within it, or no longer see its icon. Those actions are not evidence that a billing agreement has ended. Check the provider’s subscription status and, when the subscription is managed through Google Play, complete the cancellation there.
If the subscription is missing from Google Play
An empty Subscriptions list does not necessarily mean there is no active subscription. First check every Google Account on the device; Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends confirming that the correct account is selected. See Google Play’s subscription troubleshooting steps.

- Check the account used to buy it: Switch Google Accounts in Play and inspect Subscriptions under each one.
- Check the app’s account area: Look for subscription, billing, or membership details and follow the provider’s cancellation instructions.
- Ask the developer if the billing route is unclear: Request the cancellation process for your specific account and ask whether the charge is handled by Google Play or another provider.
Deleting the app, removing its icon, or signing out of it is not proof that a billing agreement has ended. Verify cancellation with the provider that takes the payment.
How to identify the right route
Start with the question of who processes the charge. If the subscription appears in the Google Play Subscriptions area under the account used for the purchase, use Google Play’s cancellation flow. If it does not appear after you have checked the relevant Google Accounts, look for billing information in the app or ask its developer. The app’s provider can tell you whether its own system or another billing provider manages the subscription and what cancellation steps apply.
Do not assume that every charge connected to an Android app is a Google Play subscription. An app can offer a recurring plan, a prepaid subscription, a multi-payment plan, or a one-time in-app purchase; it may also use a billing route outside Google Play. The correct action depends on the arrangement. A Google Play cancellation only changes a subscription managed through Google Play, while a different provider’s subscription must be handled through that provider.

If you are unsure, separate two questions: “Where is this purchase billed?” and “What do I want to change?” The first identifies where to act. The second determines whether you need to stop renewal, understand remaining plan payments, or request a refund. Mixing these questions can lead to a cancellation attempt in the wrong account or a refund request that does not apply to the provider that processed the charge.
What cancellation does to access and future charges
For an ordinary recurring Google Play subscription, cancellation generally stops the next renewal; it does not normally erase time that has already been paid for. Google says access usually continues until the end of the current billing period. Check the subscription status and displayed end date for the details of your own subscription.
In practical terms, cancellation and loss of access are not necessarily simultaneous. If you cancel a recurring plan partway through a paid period, the usual outcome is that it will not renew and access continues until that period ends. Do not interpret continued access as proof that cancellation failed. Instead, check the status or end date shown for the subscription. Conversely, do not infer that a charge has stopped merely because you have stopped using the service; confirm the billing status with the provider.
Recurring subscription
Cancel before the next renewal if you do not want another billing period. Once cancelled, access normally remains through the period you have already paid for. The precise status and date shown for your subscription are more useful than uninstalling the app or assuming access must stop immediately.
The intended result for an ordinary recurring subscription is to prevent a later renewal. It is not necessarily an immediate termination of access, and it does not itself refund the current period. If you need to know when access ends, check the subscription information after completing cancellation. If the displayed information does not match what you expected, verify that you cancelled the correct subscription under the correct account.
Prepaid subscription
A prepaid subscription has a fixed duration rather than an ordinary recurring renewal. It normally expires at the end of the period purchased. Google notes that some unused prepaid subscriptions may be eligible for a refund request; eligibility is not automatic and depends on the applicable policy.
That makes a prepaid plan different from a recurring plan you cancel to prevent the next charge. A prepaid purchase has a set term, so first establish whether it is recurring at all. If your goal is to recover money for an unused prepaid period, cancellation alone is not the refund request: make a separate request and check the policy that applies to the purchase and your location.

Multi-payment plan
A payment plan is different from a simple recurring subscription. Cancelling can prevent a future renewal of the plan, but it may not release you from installments already committed for the current plan. Google says users remain responsible for remaining payments after the payment method has been charged for a payment plan. Review the plan details before treating cancellation as a way to avoid its outstanding installments.

In other words, stopping the next plan renewal and ending the current payment obligation are not necessarily the same thing. Before cancelling, identify whether the subscription is a multi-payment arrangement and read its displayed details. Do not assume that selecting Cancel subscription erases installments on a plan already in progress. If you have a question about the remaining payments or how the plan is administered, consult Google Play’s current subscription information or the provider responsible for the billing.
Compare the arrangement before acting
- Recurring subscription: Cancellation generally prevents the next renewal; access usually continues through the period already paid.
- Prepaid subscription: The plan has a fixed duration and normally expires at its end; some unused prepaid plans may be eligible for a separate refund request.
- Multi-payment plan: Cancellation may prevent a future renewal but does not necessarily remove payments remaining on the current plan.
- One-time in-app purchase: There may be no subscription renewal to cancel; if you want reimbursement, consider a separate refund request.
These distinctions help set expectations, but the exact status for an individual purchase is shown by its billing provider. If a plan’s type is unclear, check its details or ask the provider rather than assuming that every “subscription” can be ended in the same way.
Subscription cancellation is not a refund
Cancellation changes future billing or renewal; it does not automatically return a previous payment. If you want money back for a purchase or charge, submit a separate refund request through Google Play and review the policy that applies to your country or region. Google’s refund request page for EEA countries and the UK explains how to request one, while its refund policies for apps, games, and in-app purchases in the EEA and UK describe relevant purchase rules. Refund eligibility depends on factors such as purchase type, timing, and circumstances; an accidental charge, renewal, or unused time is not a guarantee of reimbursement.
Think of these as two separate tasks. To stop future renewals, cancel with the provider that bills the subscription. To ask for money back from a past purchase or charge, submit a refund request to the provider that processed it. A cancellation confirmation verifies a change to renewal status; it does not confirm that a refund was approved or issued.
If you paid a provider other than Google Play, ask that provider about its refund process. A Google Play cancellation or refund request may not apply to a transaction billed elsewhere. First identify who processed the payment, then use that provider’s refund procedure and check its applicable policy. Do not assume a refund will be granted just because a charge was recent, accidental, or connected to an unused subscription.
Regional rules can differ
Google documents some limited regional and conditional options for partial refunds or immediate cancellation. Its partial refunds for Google Play subscriptions page identifies Israel, France, Germany, and New York state as locations where such an option may apply, with eligibility varying by location and situation. The page describes, for example, a New York option following an opt-out price increase and conditions for certain German subscriptions. These are not general rules for every subscriber in those places; check the current terms for your exact circumstances.

These limited options should not be treated as a universal feature of cancellation. Whether a partial refund or immediate cancellation is available depends on the relevant location and conditions. If you may qualify, consult Google’s current page and follow the instructions for your circumstances rather than assuming that the ordinary cancellation flow will automatically produce a prorated refund.
For the EEA and UK, Google’s refund information distinguishes digital content from digital services and describes different withdrawal and refund rules. The applicable treatment depends on what was purchased and the local circumstances. Consult Google’s current EEA and UK refund policy explanation rather than assuming one rule covers every app purchase or subscription. The appropriate outcome can depend on whether the transaction was for digital content or a digital service, along with the purchase and location details. Google’s published regional explanation is the right place to check the current rules; avoid treating a general summary as a guarantee of eligibility.
When the charge is for an in-app purchase
“In-app purchase” can describe more than one billing arrangement. If the purchase created a recurring subscription or plan, use the cancellation steps above with the provider that bills it. If it was a one-time purchase rather than a recurring subscription, there may be no renewal to cancel; a request for money back is a separate refund issue and is assessed under the applicable policy.
So first determine what was purchased. A recurring subscription is an ongoing arrangement that can renew, and the task is to cancel it with the provider that bills it. A prepaid subscription has a fixed duration. A multi-payment plan may leave installments due on the current plan. A one-time in-app purchase does not have a subscription renewal simply because it was made inside an app. If you do not recognize the type, check the purchase or subscription details in the billing account and ask the provider for clarification.
Before taking action, identify the outcome you need:
- Stop future renewals: Cancel the recurring subscription with its billing provider.
- Keep access through time already paid for: Cancel renewal and check the subscription’s status and end date.
- Seek reimbursement for a charge: Submit a separate refund request to the provider that processed it.
- Understand a multi-payment commitment: Review remaining plan installments; cancellation may not remove them.
This distinction avoids two common missteps: trying to cancel a one-time purchase as if it were recurring, and expecting a subscription cancellation to refund a payment. The correct route depends on both the purchase type and the outcome you want. If the charge does not appear in Google Play, also check whether the app or another provider handled the transaction.

If you do not see a cancellation confirmation, or if the subscription remains active in a way you do not understand, check that you selected the correct Google Account and completed all prompts. For a subscription absent from Google Play, follow up with the app developer or other billing provider instead.

Use a short verification checklist:
- Confirm the account: Make sure the subscription belongs to the Google Account you checked, especially if multiple accounts are on the device.
- Confirm the subscription: Verify that you selected the intended app or plan, rather than another subscription.
- Confirm the action: Check for a confirmation email or a changed status after completing the on-screen cancellation prompts.
- Check the timing: Note any displayed end date; continued access through a paid period can be normal after cancellation.

Keep any refund request separate from this verification: a cancellation confirmation establishes that you changed renewal status, not that an earlier payment was refunded. If you sought a refund as well, follow that request separately through the provider that processed the purchase and review its decision under the applicable policy.
