The most reliable starting point is the AW3226Q’s factory Standard mode for SDR: it has no visible color or grayscale errors in testing, although its gamma is lighter than the usual target. Choose Creator when you specifically need an sRGB target and adjustable gamma, accepting its grayscale-calibration trade-off. Do not use Custom Color as a full calibration mode because it has no gamma control.
For HDR, calibrate the exact combination you will use: the monitor’s selected HDR mode, GPU, cable path and Windows HDR profile. The AW3226Q supports DisplayHDR True Black 400, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but there is no honest universal RGB preset. A colorimeter and ICC profile are necessary for repeatable, unit-specific color management.
What the AW3226Q is capable of
The Alienware AW3226Q is a 32-inch 4K OLED monitor with a 3840×2160 native resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 165 Hz. Dell specifies 99% DCI-P3 coverage, average Delta E below 2, 250 nits full-field brightness and DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification. Independent testing identifies a tandem RGB-stripe OLED panel, HDR10 support, Dolby Vision support and approximately 1,000 nits peak HDR brightness on a 3% window.

| Specification | Published value | Why it matters for calibration |
|---|---|---|
| Panel and size | 32-inch OLED; tandem RGB-stripe design | OLED contrast and panel power management affect how brightness and uniformity appear during measurements. |
| Native resolution | 3840×2160 | Use the native resolution when evaluating fine gradients, text and HDR test patterns. |
| Maximum refresh rate | 165 Hz | Confirm that the graphics card and cable maintain the intended refresh rate without changing the signal format. |
| Color gamut | 99% DCI-P3 | Wide-gamut capability is useful for HDR and P3 work, but SDR applications may need an sRGB-targeted mode. |
| Factory color claim | Average Delta E below 2 | This indicates strong factory accuracy on average; it does not create a universal ICC profile for every unit. |
| Full-screen brightness | 250 nits manufacturer specification | Large bright areas will not look like a small HDR highlight. |
| HDR peak | 1,000 nits on a 3% window | Peak brightness applies to a small highlight, not a full white screen. |
| HDR standards and formats | DisplayHDR True Black 400, HDR10 and Dolby Vision | Each mode and source path can tone-map content differently, so calibrate the path you actually use. |
Those figures describe the display’s capability, not a promise that every picture will look identical in every mode. OLED behavior, firmware, source settings and room lighting all affect what you see.

Prepare the monitor and signal chain
Reset before judging color
- Open the AW3226Q on-screen display (OSD) and perform a factory reset.
- Allow the panel to warm up normally before making visual judgments or taking measurements. Do not evaluate a cold panel immediately after powering it on.
- Place the monitor squarely in front of you at your normal viewing distance. Keep the screen free of changing windows, animated wallpapers and other content while you assess uniformity.
Resetting removes an unknown combination of brightness, preset and color controls. Warm-up and a stable image reduce the chance that you are calibrating transient behavior rather than the display you actually use.
Set a complete RGB signal
In the computer’s graphics control panel, select RGB output and full range when those options are available. Select 10-bit output when the GPU and connection support it. Then open the monitor’s information page and verify that the expected resolution, refresh rate and bit depth are arriving. Exact labels differ between GPU drivers and operating systems; Dell’s AW3226Q User’s Guide is the authoritative reference for the monitor’s connection and OSD labels.
A limited-range signal sent to a full-range display can make blacks look gray and compress highlight detail. Conversely, forcing a setting that the cable, GPU or operating system cannot carry can cause a fallback to a different format. Verify the received signal rather than assuming the desktop setting took effect.

1. Start with Standard mode
After the reset and signal check, select Standard in the AW3226Q’s preset or color-mode controls. Tom’s Hardware found no visible color or grayscale errors in this mode, which makes it the strongest first choice for ordinary SDR desktop work, web browsing and games.
The important qualification is gamma: testing found it too light. A light gamma makes midtones look lifted, so an image can appear flatter or brighter than a reference display even when the primaries and grayscale are visually clean. If your priority is an accurate out-of-box image without measurement hardware, Standard is the sensible baseline; if your workflow requires a specific gamma target, move to Creator or use a measured profile.

2. Use Creator for an sRGB target or gamma adjustment
Select Creator when you need the monitor to target sRGB or when you need access to gamma adjustment. Tom’s Hardware reports that Creator provides both an sRGB selection and gamma control.
Creator involves a trade-off: grayscale calibration is given up. In practical terms, you gain useful control over the tone-response target but should not assume that neutral grays will remain as well aligned as they were in Standard. This is why Creator is a deliberate workflow choice rather than a universal “better” preset.

3. Do not treat Custom Color as complete calibration
Custom Color can be useful for manual RGB adjustments, but it has no gamma control on this model. Without gamma adjustment, you cannot independently correct the light tone response reported in Standard while using Custom Color. Use it only when you have a measured reason to adjust the channels and understand that it is not a complete calibration mode by itself.
4. Decide whether you need a colorimeter
Software-only setup is sufficient when you want a sensible factory mode, a correct RGB range and a consistent SDR workflow. Use a colorimeter and profiling software when you need a measured ICC profile for a particular AW3226Q unit, room brightness or color-managed application.
The measured profile belongs to the monitor, settings and conditions under which it was created. A profile made for another AW3226Q, another brightness level or another firmware state is not a universal preset. The available evidence does not establish a single AW3226Q-specific colorimeter model or validated RGB recipe, so do not copy numeric RGB values from an unrelated OLED and call them calibrated.

Standard, Creator and Custom Color compared
| Mode | Gamma control | sRGB selection | Grayscale result reported in testing | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | No gamma adjustment reported | Not the defining control | No visible color or grayscale errors; gamma is too light | General SDR use when factory accuracy is the priority |
| Creator | Yes | Yes | Grayscale calibration is given up | sRGB-targeted work or a workflow requiring gamma adjustment |
| Custom Color | No | Not the defining control | Manual channel changes are possible, but the mode lacks gamma control | Measured, limited RGB adjustments rather than complete calibration |
Do not switch between these modes casually after profiling. A profile describes the mode and settings used during measurement. Changing the mode changes the display’s response and can invalidate the profile for color-managed applications.

Understand the available HDR choices
The AW3226Q supports the DisplayHDR True Black 400 standard as well as HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. These names describe different parts of the HDR chain: DisplayHDR True Black 400 is the monitor’s standards-based HDR certification, while HDR10 and Dolby Vision describe source formats and their associated metadata or tone-mapping behavior.
| Choice | Use it when | Calibration implication |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayHDR True Black 400 | You want the named standards-based HDR mode provided by Dell | Run Windows HDR Calibration while this mode is selected, then keep the resulting profile with this mode. |
| HDR10 | Your game or video source outputs HDR10 | Check clipping, shadow detail and highlight behavior with HDR10 content; do not assume another mode’s profile is interchangeable. |
| Dolby Vision | Your source and playback chain are configured for Dolby Vision | Keep the source Dolby Vision setting and the monitor’s HDR behavior consistent when comparing results because tone mapping may occur in the display or source. |
The monitor’s approximately 1,000-nit HDR peak is measured on a 3% window, while Dell specifies 250 nits for full-field brightness. A small specular highlight can therefore be much brighter than a large white scene. Do not force a peak-nits value copied from another OLED into the AW3226Q’s calibration controls.
1. Enable HDR only for HDR work
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display and select the AW3226Q.
- Open the HDR section and turn HDR on when you are about to play HDR games or watch HDR video.
- Turn HDR off for ordinary SDR desktop work if the desktop appears raised, gray or washed out. Switching Windows HDR for the task at hand avoids judging SDR content through an HDR transform.
Windows and driver labels can change between releases, but the display-specific HDR control remains in the selected monitor’s Display settings.
2. Select the monitor mode you will actually use
Use the AW3226Q OSD to select the intended HDR mode before calibration. If you normally play HDR10 games in DisplayHDR True Black 400, calibrate that combination. If you compare Dolby Vision video, select the source’s Dolby Vision mode and do not compare it against a differently configured HDR10 path as though they were the same output.

3. Run Windows HDR Calibration
- With Windows HDR enabled and the desired AW3226Q HDR mode selected, launch the Windows HDR Calibration app.
- Complete its black-level, maximum-luminance and saturation adjustments while viewing the test patterns at your normal seating position.
- Save the resulting profile and associate it with the same display path, GPU and cable arrangement.
- Repeat the calibration after changing the monitor HDR mode, graphics card, cable path or a major monitor firmware version.
The app’s result is specific to the signal path that was measured. Moving the cable to another GPU output or changing a driver setting can alter the path enough to justify a new run.
4. Validate with real content and test patterns
- Check near-black steps for crushed shadow detail.
- Check bright highlight patterns for clipping before the brightest steps.
- Look for a smooth transition through midtones rather than a gray veil over the entire image.
- Use known reference HDR scenes in addition to the app’s patterns; a single test image cannot reveal every tone-mapping decision.
- Compare Dolby Vision only with a source that is actually outputting Dolby Vision, and keep the monitor’s behavior unchanged during the comparison.
Because OLED brightness and tone mapping are mode- and firmware-dependent, a calibration value that works on another OLED is not evidence that it is correct on the AW3226Q.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why edge dimming or a green tint may not be a calibration error
Some AW3226Q owners may see darker edges or corners, a color shift, a green tint, white-luminance variation or uneven color uniformity. Dell describes these effects as possible characteristics of this panel type, including when viewed at a 45-degree angle. Its support guidance states: “Some variation in brightness uniformity is a known characteristic of this panel type and is not a defect.”
Constant Power Control and the OLED panel structure
Dell attributes the behavior to the display’s 3-sub, 4-stack OLED panel and Constant Power Control (CPC). CPC is a built-in power-management and dimming feature intended to reduce burn-in risk. It can darken outer edges, especially when the center of the image is demanding more power.
Dell also reports that brightness gradually recovers after switching to uniform content and that increasing the brightness setting may reduce the apparent difference between center and edge. That recovery behavior is different from a fixed color-profile error.

Calibrate from the position you actually use
- Face the panel straight on from your normal seating position.
- Use stable, uniform content while checking white and gray screens.
- Do not measure or correct an angle-dependent green tint if it is visible only from an oblique position.
- Do not corrupt the neutral white point for straight-on viewing to compensate for a side-angle shift.
If the tint or brightness change remains severe when you are centered, appears in stable uniform content and does not recover after the content changes, document the conditions and contact Dell support rather than trying increasingly extreme color-channel values.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using one RGB preset for every AW3226Q
Panel variation, firmware, brightness and measurement conditions mean that a numeric RGB recipe cannot be assumed to work for every unit. Return to Standard, Creator or a measured profile based on your goal instead of copying values from another monitor.
Leaving Windows HDR enabled for the SDR desktop
If SDR windows look gray or lifted, disable HDR in Windows while doing SDR work. Re-enable it for HDR games and video, then use the HDR profile associated with the selected mode.

Angle-dependent color and luminance changes are a known OLED behavior on this panel design. Evaluate gamma and white balance from the centered position where you work.
Assuming peak brightness is full-screen brightness
The 1,000-nit figure is a 3% HDR-window peak, whereas full-field brightness is specified at 250 nits. A large white scene will not match a tiny highlight, and that difference is expected.
Changing modes after profiling
An ICC profile made for Standard SDR does not describe Creator or an HDR mode. Keep the profile tied to the mode and signal path that were measured, and create a new profile when those conditions change.
Recommended workflows by goal
General SDR desktop and gaming
- Reset the OSD and warm the panel.
- Set RGB full range and 10-bit where supported, then verify the received signal.
- Use Standard mode.
- Accept that the tested gamma is light; if that is unacceptable, move to Creator with an sRGB target or use measured profiling.
- Keep Windows HDR off during ordinary SDR work.
sRGB-focused editing
- Complete the reset, warm-up and signal checks.
- Select Creator and choose its sRGB option.
- Adjust gamma within Creator if your workflow requires it.
- Use a colorimeter and ICC profile when neutral grayscale and repeatability matter more than the convenience of a factory preset.
HDR gaming
- Enable HDR in Windows for the AW3226Q.
- Select the HDR mode you intend to keep for games.
- Run Windows HDR Calibration in that mode.
- Validate shadow steps and highlight clipping in a known HDR game.
- Repeat after changing GPU, cable path, monitor HDR mode or major firmware.
HDR video with Dolby Vision
- Confirm that the source is genuinely outputting Dolby Vision.
- Keep the source setting and the monitor’s HDR behavior consistent.
- Judge tone mapping with known Dolby Vision content rather than comparing it directly with an HDR10 path.
Final verification checklist
- The OSD was reset and the panel was allowed to warm up.
- The monitor is being viewed from the centered, normal position.
- The GPU output is RGB/full range and 10-bit where the hardware and link support it.
- The monitor information page confirms the intended resolution, refresh rate and signal format.
- Standard is used for a straightforward SDR baseline, Creator only when sRGB or gamma control is needed, and Custom Color is not mistaken for a complete calibration mode.
- Windows HDR is enabled only for HDR work when SDR desktop appearance is affected.
- Windows HDR Calibration was run in the same HDR mode and signal path used for content.
- Shadow detail, highlight clipping and real reference content were checked.
- Edge dimming or angle-dependent color shifts were evaluated as possible CPC and panel behavior before altering white balance.
- An ICC profile is treated as unit- and condition-specific rather than a universal AW3226Q preset.
For most owners, the best starting point is therefore simple: reset the monitor, verify a full-range RGB signal, use Standard for SDR, choose Creator only for its sRGB and gamma controls, and calibrate HDR separately for the exact mode and connection used. That approach preserves the AW3226Q’s strong factory color performance without trying to “fix” normal OLED behavior or applying unsupported universal numbers.
