For the most dependable elevation reading, calibrate your watch at its current location using a reliable known elevation, or use GPS calibration outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Then keep in mind that a barometric altimeter measures air pressure, not height directly: weather, indoor pressure changes, wind, water, dirt and weak satellite signals can all make the displayed elevation drift.

Calibration menus and automatic behavior differ by model and generation. The workflow below explains the common choices, followed by documented instructions for Garmin epix (Gen 2), COROS watches and Suunto Vertical.

What an altimeter watch is actually measuring

A barometric altimeter contains a pressure sensor. It estimates elevation from the surrounding air pressure after establishing a reference point. Because air pressure normally falls as you gain height, the watch can convert pressure changes into an elevation estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same pressure change can occur without you moving uphill or downhill. A passing weather system, heating or air conditioning, a pressurized vehicle or building, strong wind over the sensor, or water and dirt in the pressure port can look like a change in elevation. Calibration therefore sets the starting relationship between pressure and elevation; it does not make the sensor immune to later environmental changes.

Many current watches combine barometric data with GPS or a digital elevation model (DEM). Sensor fusion can correct some drift, but no automatic system is infallible and the exact algorithm varies by model.

Before you calibrate

Identify the exact model and software generation

Open the owner’s manual for the watch on your wrist. Menu names and available choices can change between brands, model generations and firmware versions. Do not assume that a path shown for one watch applies to another, even within the same brand.

Choose a trustworthy reference

A known elevation at your present location is usually the strongest manual reference. Suitable references include a clearly marked trailhead, a surveyed benchmark, an official map elevation or another authoritative sign at the building or site where you are standing. An elevation remembered from a nearby point is not equivalent if the ground rises or falls between the two locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPS is a useful alternative when you do not know the local elevation. Perform the calibration outside in an open area and wait for a good satellite fix. Trees, cliffs, buildings and heavy cloud cover can reduce or obstruct the signal. Units also matter: confirm that the reference and the watch use compatible metres or feet settings before saving a value.

Decide whether automatic data is appropriate

Some watches can use a DEM, an automatic starting-point calibration or a combined GPS/barometric estimate. These options are convenient when a surveyed reference is unavailable, but they are not identical across devices. Use the setting described in your own manual and record which method you selected.

General calibration procedure

  1. Open the manual and locate the altimeter controls. Look for terms such as Altimeter, Alti & baro, Elevation, Calibration, Altitude reference or Sensors. Follow the model-specific path rather than guessing from a different watch.
  2. Move to the reference location. For a manual value, stand at the point whose elevation you know. For GPS, go outdoors with as much open sky as possible and remain still while the watch obtains a suitable fix.
  3. Select the calibration source. Choose a known or manually entered elevation when you have a reliable value. Otherwise choose GPS, DEM or the manufacturer’s automatic option if your watch provides it.
  4. Enter or confirm the elevation. Check the unit setting and type the complete value. Save the setting only after verifying that the number represents your current position, not the destination or a nearby landmark.
  5. Allow the watch to settle. Give the pressure sensor and, where applicable, GPS time to update. Starting an activity immediately in a sheltered or obstructed location can preserve a poor reference.
  6. Check the result at a known point. Compare the displayed elevation with a second reliable marker when practical. A discrepancy that grows during a day does not automatically mean the watch is defective; investigate pressure and sensor conditions first.
  7. Recalibrate when conditions change. If a weather front passes, you move from a climate-controlled building to outdoors, or the watch has been exposed to water, repeat the procedure according to the manual.

Calibrate at the right time and place

Calibration is most useful immediately before the activity in the environment where the watch will operate. If you enter an elevation while sitting indoors and then walk outside, the pressure difference between the building and open air can create an apparent jump. A car, train, aircraft or pressurized cabin is similarly unsuitable as a field reference.

For a hike that begins at a marked trailhead, pause at the sign, enter that elevation and wait for the display to stabilize before recording the activity. If the route includes a second clearly marked pass or summit, note the reading there. A later checkpoint can reveal whether the problem is a constant starting offset or gradual pressure drift. Do not substitute the elevation of a parking lot, visitor center or nearby town for the exact point where the watch is located unless the published value is explicitly for that position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no reliable marker exists, an open-field GPS calibration is preferable to a fix taken under a roof or between high walls. Remain still while the receiver settles, and postpone the calibration if the watch reports poor reception. A good initial reference cannot prevent weather-related drift, but a poor initial reference makes every subsequent comparison harder.

Garmin epix (Gen 2): documented menu paths

The Garmin epix (Gen 2) Standard/Pro Series Owner’s Manual, version 12 (August 2025), says: “Your watch was already calibrated at the factory, and the watch uses automatic calibration at your GPS starting point by default.” The manual is specific to this model family; other Garmin watches can use different menus.

On an epix (Gen 2), hold MENU, then choose Sensors & Accessories > Altimeter. From there:

  • Select Auto Cal. to calibrate from the GPS starting point.
  • Select Calibrate, then choose Enter Manually when you know the current elevation.
  • Choose Use DEM to use the watch’s digital elevation model.
  • Choose Use GPS when you are outdoors and have a suitable satellite fix.

Use the exact Garmin owner’s manual for your edition if these labels do not appear. The documented procedure is available at Garmin’s epix (Gen 2) altimeter instructions.

COROS watches: GPS or entered elevation

COROS places elevation calibration under the system sensor controls. From the main watch face, open System > Sensors > Calibration > Elevation, then select Use GPS or Enter Elevation.

COROS recommends standing in an open field for GPS calibration and entering the exact elevation before an activity for the best result. The company also recommends regular manual recalibration even though its watches can recalibrate elevation with GPS during outdoor workouts. If you are beside a building, under dense trees or in a narrow canyon, postpone GPS calibration or use a verified manual elevation instead.

COROS describes its operating cycle as follows:

Function Vendor-described interval How to interpret it
Barometer during a workout Every 1–2 seconds Frequent pressure samples support short-term elevation changes, but pressure itself can be altered by weather and surroundings.
GPS elevation recalibration during a workout Once every 30 minutes This is a periodic correction, not a continuous guarantee of GPS-grade elevation.
Barometer during daily use Once per minute Changes between samples can be missed or influenced by local pressure disturbances.
Elevation widget refresh Every 10 minutes The widget may not display every underlying sensor reading immediately.

These intervals and the associated guidance are COROS device details, not independent tests of every watch. See COROS’s troubleshooting guidance and its explanation of how its devices measure elevation.

Suunto Vertical: set an altitude reference or use FusedAlti

On Suunto Vertical, define an altitude reference under Settings > Alti & baro. The reference can be a known current elevation or can be set automatically with FusedAlti.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suunto describes FusedAlti as a combination of GPS and barometric altitude. It is used by default during GPS exercises and navigation. When GPS is turned off, the watch relies on its barometric sensor. If you begin from a known elevation, entering that value gives the barometer a clear baseline; if you lack a trustworthy reference, FusedAlti can establish one when GPS conditions are adequate.

Documented feature comparison

The following comparison describes documented controls, not a ranking of accuracy:

Watch example Reference choices Sensor behavior described by the maker Maintenance or condition note
Garmin epix (Gen 2) Manual elevation, GPS, DEM or automatic starting-point calibration Factory calibration and automatic calibration at the GPS starting point by default Use the epix (Gen 2) manual; other Garmin generations may differ
COROS watches Enter Elevation or Use GPS Barometer samples every 1–2 seconds during workouts; GPS elevation recalibration once every 30 minutes Open-field GPS calibration, regular manual recalibration and routine cleaning are recommended
Suunto Vertical Known current elevation or FusedAlti FusedAlti combines GPS and barometric altitude; barometric operation is used when GPS is off Set the altitude reference under Settings > Alti & baro

No documented comparison here establishes one brand as the most accurate. The useful buying question is whether a model offers the reference method, sensor combination and maintenance guidance that fit your activity. If your current supported watch already provides those controls, calibration alone may solve the problem and you do not need to purchase a new device.

Which calibration method should you choose?

Method Best use Main limitation
Known or manually entered elevation You are at a surveyed marker or reliable published elevation. An incorrect reference creates a consistent offset until you recalibrate.
GPS calibration You are outdoors with open sky and no dependable elevation marker. Weak or obstructed satellite reception can produce a poor starting value.
Digital elevation model (DEM) Your watch supports DEM and you want an automated map-based reference. DEM resolution and map data differ by location; not every model offers this choice.
Automatic or fused calibration You want the watch to compare GPS and barometric data during navigation or workouts. Algorithms, timing and fallback behavior are model-specific and cannot eliminate all drift.

For a route with known checkpoints, manual calibration at the start and at a verified intermediate point can make it easier to distinguish a real climb from a pressure-related offset. For an unplanned outing, use GPS or the watch’s fused method only after confirming a good fix.

Why elevation readings drift after calibration

Weather and natural pressure changes

Barometric elevation assumes a relationship between pressure and height. Falling or rising atmospheric pressure can therefore look like descent or ascent while you remain still. A forecast change, a storm front or normal daily pressure variation can produce drift that no manual calibration can permanently prevent.

Indoor, heated or pressurized spaces

Air conditioning, heaters, ventilation systems and pressurized cabins alter the pressure around the sensor. Calibrating inside an aircraft, vehicle or tightly controlled building can give a reference that is not representative of the outdoor route.

Wind and water exposure

Strong wind moving across a pressure port can disturb the reading. Submersion and rapid movement through water can also affect the sensor. Let the watch return to normal conditions before calibrating again, following the manufacturer’s water-care instructions.

Dust, sweat and residue in the pressure port

Dust from trails, sweat and sediment from salt or chlorinated water can accumulate around the sensor opening. COROS specifically lists dirt, dust and residue as causes of inaccurate readings and recommends routine cleaning. Use only the cleaning method approved for your model; never insert a pin, brush or other object into a pressure port or flush it with an unapproved chemical.

Weak GPS reception

GPS elevation is not equally reliable in every environment. COROS says a strong satellite signal may produce readings accurate within a few metres, while a weak signal can result in errors of tens of metres. Those figures describe COROS’s device context and are not a universal specification for all watches or locations.

Troubleshoot a reading that still looks wrong

  1. Check the reference first. Return to a known elevation and verify the unit, number and location you entered.
  2. Repeat GPS calibration outdoors. Move away from walls, roofs, cliffs and dense canopy. Wait for the watch to report a suitable fix instead of accepting the first estimate.
  3. Compare pressure conditions. Note whether weather, wind, heating, air conditioning or a pressurized environment changed since calibration.
  4. Inspect the sensor opening. Look for visible dirt, sweat or residue. Follow the owner’s cleaning instructions and allow the watch to dry fully after water exposure.
  5. Recheck at a second known point. If the error is a stable offset, recalibration may solve it. If it changes rapidly while conditions are stable, continue to the next step.
  6. Update or contact the manufacturer. Use the model’s support process if drift persists after correct calibration and cleaning. Do not attempt an internal repair or force air into the sensor.

What accuracy can you reasonably expect?

There is no single accuracy tolerance that applies to every altimeter watch. The official materials cited here do not provide a controlled, cross-brand accuracy comparison or a general statistic that can be promised for all terrain and weather.

Instead, treat elevation as an estimate whose quality depends on the reference, pressure stability and GPS conditions. A carefully entered known elevation can remove a starting offset; automatic GPS or fused systems can correct some later changes; neither approach guarantees a fixed number of metres under every condition. When navigation or safety depends on altitude, confirm the value with a map, trail marker or other independent reference.

Do you need a new watch?

Not necessarily. A supported watch with a barometric sensor may only need a correct reference, an unobstructed GPS fix or cleaning around its pressure port. First check whether the manual offers manual elevation, GPS, DEM or fused calibration. Buying another watch cannot remove weather-related pressure changes, and the sources available for Garmin epix (Gen 2), COROS and Suunto Vertical do not establish an overall most-accurate brand.

Consider a different model only when its documented controls match a real requirement, such as a user-set altitude reference, a DEM option or GPS/barometric fusion. Verify the exact model and current manual before purchase; labels and automatic behavior can change between generations. There is no need to replace a functioning watch solely because its displayed elevation changed after a storm or a swim.

Field checklist

  • Identify the exact model and read its current owner’s manual.
  • Use a reliable elevation at your current position whenever one is available.
  • For GPS calibration, stand outside in open sky and wait for a good fix.
  • Confirm feet-versus-metres settings before saving the reference.
  • Record whether the watch is using manual elevation, GPS, DEM or a fused automatic method.
  • Recalibrate after major weather or pressure changes and at verified checkpoints.
  • Keep the pressure port clean and follow the manufacturer’s water and cleaning instructions.
  • Treat vendor-reported sampling intervals and GPS ranges as device-specific guidance, not universal accuracy guarantees.

Key takeaway

Start with a trustworthy known elevation, use GPS only with a clear satellite view, and follow the menu path written for your exact watch. If readings drift later, investigate pressure, environment and sensor cleanliness before assuming the altimeter has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calibrate an altimeter watch indoors?

Use a known elevation indoors only if it is specifically for your exact position and the surrounding pressure is stable. For GPS calibration, go outdoors to an open area; indoor walls, roofs and HVAC systems can distort the fix or pressure reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is GPS or manual elevation better?

A reliable known elevation at the watch’s current location is generally the strongest manual reference. GPS is useful when no trustworthy marker is available, but wait for a good outdoor fix and treat obstructed reception cautiously.

How often should I recalibrate?

Recalibrate when you move to a new known elevation, after major weather or pressure changes, or when the watch has been exposed to water. COROS also recommends regular manual recalibration even though its watches can recalibrate with GPS during outdoor workouts.

Why does my elevation change while I am standing still?

A barometric altimeter responds to air pressure. Weather systems, normal daily pressure variation, heaters, air conditioners, pressurized spaces, wind and a dirty pressure port can all resemble a change in height.

What should I do after swimming or getting the watch wet?

Let the watch return to normal conditions and dry as directed by its manufacturer before calibrating. Salt, chlorine, sweat or sediment can affect the pressure opening, so follow the model’s approved cleaning instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a nearby trail sign as my reference?

Only if the sign’s elevation applies to the exact place where you are standing. A value from a nearby point can create a persistent offset when the ground rises or falls between the sign and the watch.

Why is my GPS elevation off by many metres?

Signal quality matters. COROS reports that strong signals may produce readings within a few metres while weak signals can produce errors of tens of metres; those figures are device-specific, not a universal promise.

Should I buy a new watch for better elevation accuracy?

Not automatically. Check whether your current model supports manual, GPS, DEM or fused calibration and whether its sensor port is clean. The documented materials do not establish one brand as universally most accurate.

The Bottom Line

Calibrate at a verified elevation whenever possible; otherwise use GPS outdoors with open sky. Follow your exact model’s manual, confirm units, and investigate weather, pressure, water, dirt and signal conditions before blaming the watch.
