Calibrate a flexible sensor against known reference motions over the range in which it will operate. Measure every output channel in a neutral pose, in bend-only and twist-only poses, and in combined poses. Fit those measurements to bend and twist, then check the result with repeated loading and unloading cycles. This process exposes cross-sensitivity, hysteresis, drift and mounting effects that a single end-point measurement can hide.
The method must match the sensor’s construction and installation. A one-axis bend sensor is not automatically a twist sensor, and a calibration learned on one mounting geometry should not be transferred to another without verification.
What calibration must establish
A useful calibration answers four questions:
- What does each output channel measure in the installed assembly?
- How do those outputs change with a known bend, a known twist and both motions together?
- Does the output depend on whether the sensor is being loaded or unloaded?
- How much error remains on poses that were not used to fit the calibration?
Flexible resistive sensors commonly show nonlinear response and hysteresis. The substrate, adhesive, attachment tension, neutral shape and loading rate can all affect the output. Therefore, calibration belongs to the complete sensor-and-mounting arrangement, not just to a part number.
IEC 63203-401-1:2023 is useful for planning measurements of stretchable resistive strain sensors. It addresses gauge factor, linearity, response and hysteresis, but it is not a universal procedure for every flexible multiaxis shape sensor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

As the standard states, “The purpose of this method is to measure the hysteresis of the stretchable strain sensor.” Use that scope accurately: a bend-and-twist system may need additional fixtures and reference motions beyond the standard’s stretching-and-releasing test.
Confirm that the sensor can measure the required motions
Check the sensing axes
Before building a calibration rig, identify the physical quantity each channel is intended to sense. Some flexible products are specified for one-axis or two-axis bending. A vendor description of bending axes does not establish twist capability. Verify the sensing architecture and documentation for torsion, and confirm that the installation allows the sensor to experience that torsion.
If the device has only one output and that output responds to curvature, there is generally no reliable way to distinguish bend from twist without additional independent information. Do not label a bend-only device as a twist sensor merely because its resistance changes when twisted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord the coordinate system
Write down the sensor’s longitudinal direction, the bend axes, the twist axis, the attachment points and the neutral pose. Define positive bend and positive twist before collecting data. Also record whether outputs are reported as resistance, conductance, voltage, capacitance, digital counts or an already processed angle.

Build a repeatable reference setup
Mount the sensor exactly as it will be used. A fixture that changes attachment tension, slides the neutral point or allows the substrate to wrinkle can produce a calibration that works only on the bench.
Choose a reference method according to the sensor geometry:
- A bend mandrel or controlled flexure can impose a known curvature.
- A torsion stage can impose a known rotation about the sensor’s longitudinal axis.
- A multiaxis stage or sensorized flexure can apply bend and twist independently and in combination.
- A tensile tester is appropriate for stretchable strain characterization, but it does not by itself reproduce a bend-and-twist installation.
There is no single off-the-shelf fixture that is correct for every flexible sensor. Compare candidate fixtures by motion degrees of freedom, reference accuracy, repeatability, range, mounting compatibility and their ability to apply bend and twist independently.

For fiber-optic shape sensing, one patent describes determining a twist scale factor by applying twist in a known bent state on a helical fixture. That is a technology-specific example, not a general fixture prescription for resistive or capacitive sensors.
Use reference poses that separate bend and twist
For a multichannel sensor, the calibration poses must excite the motions distinctly. At minimum, collect a neutral baseline, several bend-only states and several twist-only states across the intended range. Add combined bend-plus-twist states if the application will encounter them.
A published sensorized-flexure method uses flat, circular-bend and uniform-twist poses to solve transfer coefficients for paired sensors. The names of those poses are less important than the principle: each reference state must have a known bend and twist value, and the set of states must contain enough independent information to separate the channels’ responses.
| Reference state | Known motion | Why it is collected |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral or flat | Defined zero bend and zero twist | Establishes channel offsets and the zero pose |
| Bend-only | Known bend with twist held at zero | Measures bend sensitivity and bend-axis cross-talk |
| Twist-only | Known twist with bend held at zero | Measures twist sensitivity and twist-axis cross-talk |
| Combined | Known bend and twist together | Checks whether the fitted mapping works when both motions occur |
Use multiple magnitudes in each state rather than only one endpoint. Include the center of the operating range, where small-signal sensitivity matters, and the extremes that the application will actually reach.

- Stabilize the installation. Allow adhesive, clamps, electronics and the sensor material to reach the condition in which measurements will be taken. Record temperature or other environmental conditions when they are relevant to the application.
- Set the neutral pose. Place the assembly in the defined zero state without forcing it past neutral. Capture enough samples to estimate the baseline for every channel.
- Apply one reference pose at a time. Move to a known bend-only or twist-only state, wait for the prescribed settling condition, and record the complete output vector rather than only the channel that appears most responsive.
- Repeat across the range. Use several known states in each direction. Keep the reference values and the sensor outputs in the same record so that later fitting cannot lose the pose definition.
- Repeat the sequence while unloading. Return through the same states in reverse order. The loading and unloading records are needed to quantify hysteresis.
Keep the motion rate consistent with the real application and report it. A rate-dependent material can produce a different output during a slow fixture sweep than during a fast wearable movement.
Fit a mapping from outputs to bend and twist
Linear two-channel case
When two channels and two motion variables are approximately linear over the selected range, represent the measurement as a matrix:
y = A x + b
Here, y is the vector of measured channel outputs, x contains bend and twist, A contains the channel sensitivities and cross-sensitivities, and b contains offsets. Estimate the coefficients from the known reference poses. During operation, solve the inverse relationship to estimate bend and twist from new channel readings.

The calibration poses must be independent. If bend-only and twist-only states produce nearly the same channel changes, the matrix is poorly conditioned: small electrical noise or mounting changes can create a large error in the separated bend and twist estimates. Add poses or redesign the sensing arrangement so the two motions produce distinguishable output patterns.

Nonlinear or history-dependent response
Do not force a straight line through data that visibly curves. The IEC procedure characterizes linearity, response and hysteresis; it does not prescribe one model for every sensor. Depending on the amount of measured data, a project may use a polynomial or other nonlinear map, a piecewise calibration table, or a state-aware model that distinguishes loading from unloading.
A more complex model is justified only when the reference data support it. Extra parameters fitted from too few poses can make the calibration look accurate on the calibration set while failing on real movements.
Measure hysteresis, repeatability and rate effects
Why one-direction calibration fails
Hysteresis means that the same physical deformation can produce different outputs depending on movement history. A curve learned only while increasing bend can therefore misreport the sensor while it returns to neutral or follows a decreasing bend.
For dynamic use, plot output against the known motion for both loading and unloading. Report the definition used for hysteresis and the designated deformation or strain, because different definitions produce different numerical results.
Run repeated cycles
Cycle the assembly through the intended range several times. Compare the inferred bend and twist at the same reference pose from cycle to cycle. This reveals repeatability, conditioning effects and drift.
One 2019 flex-sensor study used repeated bending from −30° to 30° over 100 cycles for its hysteresis example. Those limits and cycle count describe that experiment; they are not a universal acceptance test. Select a range and number of cycles that represent the actual duty cycle, then state them explicitly.

Include dwell and rate information
Record the motion rate, dwell time at each pose and the order of the poses. If the sensor relaxes while held, a reading taken immediately after movement will differ from one taken after a fixed dwell. A calibration intended for a fast robot joint should not silently be reused for a slowly moving wearable.
Validate with poses that were not used for fitting
Reserve part of the reference data for validation. After fitting the mapping, apply known poses that were not included in the fit, including at least one combined bend-plus-twist state when that combination occurs in use.

Document the calibration so it can be reproduced
Store the calibration data and metadata together. At minimum, document:
- Sensor identification, construction, material and dimensions
- Substrate, adhesive, clamp and attachment geometry
- Channel wiring, excitation, filtering and sample rate
- Coordinate system, neutral pose and sign definitions
- Fixture design and reference-measurement accuracy
- Reference bend and twist values for every pose
- Motion rate, dwell time, temperature and other relevant conditions
- Loading and unloading procedure
- Fitted model, coefficients, units and valid range
- Residual error, repeatability and observed hysteresis
These records let a later user distinguish a changed sensor from a changed setup. They also prevent a coefficient matrix from being applied outside the geometry and range for which it was measured.

The sensor reports bend but twist estimates are unstable
The outputs may not contain enough independent information to separate the motions. Check the conditioning of the fitted mapping and inspect the bend-only and twist-only channel vectors. Add a genuinely independent channel, change sensor orientation or use a fixture that applies twist without unintentionally adding bend. If the hardware has no twist-sensitive mechanism, recalibration cannot create that missing information.

Accuracy is good while bending one way but poor on return
This is consistent with hysteresis or rate dependence. Collect unloading data, fit or tabulate the two paths if appropriate, and specify the motion rate and dwell used in operation. A loading-only curve should not be presented as bidirectional accuracy.

The calibration changes after remounting
Attachment tension, neutral shape and local curvature have changed. Reproduce the intended installation, record the mounting geometry and recalibrate each installation class. Do not copy coefficients from a different mount merely because the sensor part number is the same.
Endpoint calibration works, but middle poses are wrong
The response is likely nonlinear, or the two endpoints do not constrain cross-sensitivity. Add intermediate reference poses and test linearity. Use a nonlinear or piecewise map only when the additional measurements justify it.
Repeated cycles show a moving zero
Look for material conditioning, adhesive slip, temperature change, fixture movement or electronics drift. Record the neutral output before and after cycling. If the application cannot tolerate the resulting drift, define a re-zero procedure or change the mechanical and electrical design.
How to compare sensors and calibration setups
When selecting a sensor, compare the motion axes actually measured, output type, usable range, linearity, hysteresis, repeatability, response rate, mounting geometry, environmental limits, interface and availability of a documented calibration method.
When selecting a fixture, compare independent bend and twist control, reference accuracy, repeatability, travel, mounting compatibility and the ability to reproduce the installed boundary conditions. A tensile rig, bend mandrel, torsion stage and helical fixture solve different problems.

| ±1.0° bending-angle accuracy | Nitto’s accessed-2026 product page labels this as an actual measurement, not a guaranteed specification; it applies to the named product and its test conditions. |
| More than 1 million 180° bending cycles | A vendor-listed durability figure for that product family; it should not be generalized to other flexible sensors. |
| −30° to 30° over 100 cycles | Range and repetition count used in a 2019 flex-sensor hysteresis study; not a universal test requirement. |
A practical calibration checklist
- Confirm that the hardware senses every required motion axis.
- Define zero, signs, units and the installed coordinate system.
- Mount the sensor as it will be used.
- Record material, dimensions, attachment and environmental conditions.
- Capture neutral, bend-only, twist-only and combined reference poses.
- Retain the full output vector at every pose.
- Measure increasing and decreasing deformation.
- Fit only a model supported by the amount and quality of data.
- Check matrix conditioning when separating bend and twist.
- Validate on held-out poses and repeated cycles.
- Report range, rate, hysteresis, residual error and repeatability.
- Recalibrate when the sensor, mounting or operating conditions change materially.
Bottom line for accurate bend-and-twist measurements
The dependable approach is an installation-specific, two-direction calibration built around known motions. Separate bend and twist with independent reference poses, capture every channel, fit a mapping that matches the measured response, and validate it on new combined poses and repeated cycles. Treat hysteresis, mounting geometry and rate as part of the sensor behavior. No universal accuracy number applies to all flexible sensors, and no calibration can make a bend-only device measure twist reliably without an independent twist-sensitive signal.
