For a split that gives a new shares for every b old shares, multiply each affected tax lot’s pre-split shares by a ÷ b. In a plain split, keep that lot’s total basis unchanged, then divide the unchanged total by the new share count to get the post-split basis per share. Calculate each lot separately when you bought shares at different prices.

The split itself generally is not a U.S. federal taxable event. The adjusted basis matters when you later sell shares and calculate your capital gain or loss. This guide follows the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) treatment for ordinary stock splits and explains where that method stops applying.

The calculation in one minute

Use this formula for an ordinary split in which shareholders receive additional shares of the same class:

For a plain split, the aggregate basis of each lot does not change solely because of the split:

Post-split basis per share = unchanged lot basis ÷ post-split shares

Split announcement Multiplier What happens to shares What happens to each lot’s total basis
2-for-1 2 Shares double Stays the same
3-for-2 1.5 Shares increase by 50% Stays the same
5-for-4 1.25 Shares increase by 25% Stays the same
1-for-2 reverse split 0.5 Shares are cut in half, subject to rounding or cash treatment Ordinary split arithmetic alone does not resolve fractional-share or cash consequences

A split changes the number of shares representing your ownership and therefore changes the basis assigned to each share. It does not, by that arithmetic alone, double your investment, create a profit, or create taxable income. Market price and total market value can move after trading resumes; the formula is an accounting adjustment, not a promise about what the security will be worth.

Why the total basis stays constant

For a plain split, you have the same economic investment represented by a different number of identical shares. The IRS therefore keeps the lot’s aggregate basis intact and spreads it over the new share count. In a 2-for-1 split, each original share becomes two shares, so each new share carries half the old per-share basis. In a 3-for-2 split, each old share becomes 1.5 shares, so the per-share basis is multiplied by 2 ÷ 3. The total for the lot is unchanged in both cases.

This distinction prevents a common error: multiplying the dollar basis by the split multiplier. Multiply shares, not dollars. The only amount that changes in the ordinary calculation is the per-share allocation of the existing lot basis.

Step 1: Build a lot-by-lot starting record

Before applying the ratio, list every purchase lot affected by the split. A lot is a group of shares acquired in one transaction or on one acquisition date. Do not combine lots merely because they are now the same security.

For each lot, record:

  • Acquisition date and the number of pre-split shares.
  • Purchase price and total amount paid.
  • Commissions, transfer fees, recording fees, or other purchase-related costs that belong in basis under the applicable rules.
  • Your resulting total basis for that lot.
  • Any broker lot identifier or account reference.

IRS Topic 703, “Basis of assets,” describes purchase basis and adjusted-basis concepts. Your brokerage statement is useful, but retain original trade confirmations and account records in case a later statement rounds values or omits an older lot.

Start with the lot’s aggregate basis, not merely a displayed average cost. If a confirmation shows 100 shares purchased for $1,000 and a $10 commission, the relevant starting total is the purchase amount plus the applicable purchase cost under the basis rules. Keep the arithmetic in a spreadsheet or ledger with enough decimal places that the lot total can be reconciled after the split.

Step 2: Convert the announced ratio to a multiplier

Read the ratio as “new shares for each old share.” Divide the first number by the second:

  • A 2-for-1 split uses a multiplier of 2 ÷ 1 = 2.
  • A 3-for-2 split uses 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5.
  • A 5-for-4 split uses 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25.
  • A reverse 1-for-5 split uses 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2, before considering any fractional-share handling.

Use the ratio for the specific security and effective date in the issuer’s corporate-action notice. A stock dividend, split-off, merger, exchange, or other distribution can have a different basis allocation even if the share count changes. Do not infer the ratio from a price chart or from a rounded account balance.

Step 3: Multiply every lot’s share count

Single-lot example

Suppose you own 100 shares with a $15 basis per share. The lot’s total basis is 100 × $15, or $1,500. A 2-for-1 split produces:

Item Before split After 2-for-1 split
Shares 100 200
Total basis $1,500 $1,500
Basis per share $15.00 $7.50

This is the IRS’s instructional example. The $1,500 total is spread across 200 shares, so the per-share basis becomes $7.50.

Three-for-two example

Assume a lot contains 80 shares with a $2,400 total basis. A 3-for-2 split uses a 1.5 multiplier: 80 × 1.5 = 120 shares. The lot still has a $2,400 aggregate basis, and $2,400 ÷ 120 = $20 per share. The per-share amount falls from $30 to $20, exactly offsetting the 50% increase in the share count.

Multiple-lot example

Assume two separate 100-share lots are subject to the same 2-for-1 split. The first lot was bought at $10 per share; the second at $12 per share.

Lot Pre-split shares Pre-split basis per share Total basis Post-split shares Post-split basis per share
Lot 1 100 $10 $1,000 200 $5
Lot 2 100 $12 $1,200 200 $6

The IRS directs investors with differing lot bases to allocate the basis lot by lot. Averaging the two lots into one $11 figure would lose information needed if you later sell only one lot or identify particular shares. The combined account may show 400 shares and $2,200 of total basis, but the underlying lots remain 200 shares at $5 and 200 shares at $6.

Step 4: Keep each lot’s total basis unchanged for a plain split

For an ordinary split that simply gives you more shares of the same stock, do not multiply the dollar basis. Leave the lot’s total basis as it was immediately before the split, then recalculate the per-share figure using the larger (or smaller, for a reverse split) share count.

For each row, perform a control check: pre-split shares multiplied by the old per-share basis should equal the stated lot total; post-split shares multiplied by the new per-share basis should return to that same total, subject only to display rounding. If those totals do not reconcile, check whether a fee was omitted, a lot was merged, or a fractional entitlement was handled separately.

Step 5: Reconcile your worksheet with the broker

After the corporate action posts, compare your calculation with the brokerage account:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check that the post-split share quantity matches the issuer’s ratio.
  2. Check each lot’s acquisition date and post-split quantity.
  3. Compare the aggregate basis and per-share basis, allowing for display rounding.
  4. Look for a separate cash-in-lieu entry or a merged lot created by the broker.
  5. Save the split notice, pre-split statement, post-split statement, trade confirmations, and your worksheet together.

A broker’s displayed average cost can conceal multiple underlying lots. Do not delete your lot records because the account screen shows one blended number. Some interfaces display only two decimal places for a per-share figure even though the underlying basis contains more precision. Compare lot totals and share counts, not just the rounded headline number.

If the broker quantity is right but the basis is wrong, compare the original trade confirmation with the broker’s corporate-action adjustment and ask the broker to correct its records. If the broker created one blended lot, preserve your own lot schedule and the acquisition dates. A later sale may require you to identify which shares were delivered from which lot, and the IRS instructions contemplate an adjustment for a split when a disposition is reported.

How the adjusted basis is used when you sell

The split generally does not trigger tax when it occurs. When you later dispose of shares, the adjusted basis is used to determine the gain or loss reported for that sale. IRS Instructions for Form 8949 direct taxpayers to adjust basis for stock splits when relevant to a disposition, and IRS Publication 550 discusses stock-split treatment in its basis section.

The shares you sell must be matched to the applicable lot under the identification method permitted for your circumstances. If you can adequately identify the shares, your records should show which lot was delivered. When specific identification is not available, the IRS FAQ on split basis discusses FIFO treatment. Your broker’s default and your own instructions can affect which lot is treated as sold, so verify the lot before submitting a sell order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical sale file should contain the original lot date, the split-adjusted share count, the unchanged aggregate basis, the number of shares sold, and the remaining shares and basis. Subtract only the basis assigned to the shares actually disposed of; do not recalculate the remaining lot from the post-split market quote. After the sale, retain the confirmation and the Form 8949-related information with the split worksheet so the reported proceeds and basis can be traced back to the correct lot.

What to use as the starting basis

For a purchased lot, start with the amount paid plus purchase-related costs that belong in basis, such as commissions and transfer fees when applicable. Do not assume every number labeled “cost” on an old statement is complete; compare it with confirmations and fee records.

Transfers, gifts, and inheritances

Not every holding begins with a purchase. Gifts, inheritances, transfers between accounts, and other non-purchase acquisitions can follow different basis rules. IRS Topic 703 describes those categories generally. If the shares came from one of these events, obtain the transferor’s basis information or estate documentation and do not substitute the current market price for the required basis.

When the ordinary split method does not answer the question

The calculation above assumes additional identical shares and no separate payment or exchange. Use separate documentation for events with a different economic or legal structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Event Can you use the ordinary split formula alone? What to check
Plain split of the same class Generally yes Ratio, lot records, unchanged aggregate basis, and broker posting
Reverse split Only for the share-count arithmetic; not necessarily for fractional or cash treatment Issuer notice, rounding rules, and cash-in-lieu entry
Split-off or exchange No Corporate-action documents and the required basis allocation
Merger or reorganization No Transaction terms and applicable tax reporting instructions
Taxable distribution No Distribution characterization and basis consequences

Publication 550 is a starting point for federal basis adjustments, but an unusual transaction may require the issuer’s tax information and current professional advice. A notice that mentions an exchange, cash payment, new security, or allocation between securities is a signal to stop using the plain-split worksheet by itself.

Fractional shares and cash in lieu

The basic identical-share method does not establish the tax result for every fractional entitlement. Some brokers support fractional shares; others sell the fractional amount and credit cash. A reverse split can also produce a cash payment instead of a fraction.

When cash or a fraction appears:

  • Read the issuer’s corporate-action notice to see how entitlements were calculated.
  • Match the cash entry to the affected lot or lots in the broker’s records.
  • Keep the settlement statement and any tax form associated with the payment.
  • Check current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional before reporting the cash treatment.

Do not force the result into a whole-share calculation by rounding away a fraction or by adding the cash to the remaining shares’ basis without documentation. The ordinary formula can still show the theoretical entitlement, but the actual fractional disposition and any cash payment need their own records.

Common mistakes and fixes

Multiplying the basis instead of the shares

Symptom: A 2-for-1 split appears to double both your shares and your cost basis. Fix: Multiply the share count; preserve the aggregate basis for an ordinary split.

Averaging lots with different prices

Symptom: The account shows one average cost and you discard the original lot prices. Fix: Recalculate and retain a separate row for every acquisition lot.

Using market value as basis

Symptom: You replace the historical cost with the post-split trading price. Fix: Basis comes from the applicable acquisition and adjustment rules, not from the current quote.

Ignoring fees or non-purchase origins

Symptom: Your worksheet starts with only the headline share price even though fees, a gift, or an inheritance are involved. Fix: Reconstruct the correct starting basis from confirmations and transfer or estate records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rounding too early

Symptom: Lot totals no longer reconcile after several shares are sold. Fix: Keep full precision in your worksheet and round only as required for reporting or the broker’s display.

Assuming every corporate action is a split

Symptom: You apply the multiplier to a merger, split-off, or cash distribution. Fix: Stop and use the transaction-specific basis allocation instead.

Checking only the account total

Symptom: Total shares and total basis look plausible, but one acquisition date or lot is missing. Fix: Reconcile each lot, because a blended total can hide an incorrect assignment that matters when you sell selected shares.

If the broker’s basis is wrong, retain the original evidence and make the appropriate adjustment when reporting the disposition rather than silently accepting an unexplained number. • Write down the exact split ratio and effective date.
  • List every affected lot separately.
  • Multiply each lot’s shares by the ratio multiplier.
  • For a plain split, leave each lot’s total basis unchanged.
  • Divide each unchanged lot basis by its new share count.
  • Preserve acquisition dates and lot-identification details.
  • Reconcile the worksheet with broker records.
  • Investigate any fractional share or cash-in-lieu entry separately.
  • Use the adjusted basis when calculating gain or loss on a later sale.
  • Retain the issuer notice, confirmations, statements, and any correction correspondence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a stock split double my investment or total cost basis?

No. In a plain split, the share count changes and the per-share basis changes, but each lot’s aggregate basis stays the same. The split itself generally is not taxable under U.S. federal rules, and market value can change independently.

What if I bought shares at different prices?

Recalculate every acquisition lot separately. Preserve each lot’s original total basis and acquisition date; do not replace different lots with one average merely because the account now shows a blended cost.

How do I calculate a 3-for-2 split?

Use a 1.5 multiplier. An 80-share lot becomes 120 shares. If its total basis was $2,400, that total remains $2,400 and the new basis is $20 per share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What basis should I use if the shares were gifted or inherited?

Do not automatically use the purchase price or current market quote. Gifts, inheritances, account transfers, and other non-purchase acquisitions can follow different basis rules; obtain the relevant transfer or estate records and consult IRS Topic 703.

Why does my broker’s cost basis not match my worksheet?

Compare lot quantities, acquisition dates, aggregate basis, display rounding, and any cash-in-lieu entry. Preserve trade confirmations and the issuer notice. A displayed average can hide merged lots, so request a correction or maintain your documented lot schedule for later reporting.

Is a reverse split handled the same way?

The multiplier handles only the theoretical share-count arithmetic. A 1-for-5 ratio is 0.2, but rounding, fractional shares, and cash payments require the issuer’s and broker’s specific records.

What happens when a split creates a fractional share?

Do not round it away on your own. Check whether the broker holds the fraction or sells it for cash, match the entry to the affected lot, and review current tax guidance before reporting the payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When does the split-adjusted basis matter for taxes?

Usually when you later sell or otherwise dispose of the shares. IRS Form 8949 instructions and Publication 550 address adjusting basis for a split when reporting that disposition.

The Bottom Line

For an ordinary split of identical shares, multiply each lot’s shares by new shares ÷ old shares, leave that lot’s total basis unchanged, and divide by the new share count for the post-split per-share basis. Keep lots separate, reconcile the result with broker records, and handle reverse splits, fractional shares, cash payments, and other corporate actions from their specific documentation.
