Estimate WordPress bandwidth from your own traffic: measure monthly visits, average pages or requests per visit, transferred page size after compression, and downloads. Add those byte totals together, then choose a plan with substantial headroom—WPMU DEV recommends at least twice the calculated minimum because traffic surges can grow exponentially.
What WordPress bandwidth measures
Bandwidth is the amount of data your hosting infrastructure delivers during a period, usually a calendar or billing month. It is different from storage: storage is how much data sits on the server, while bandwidth is how much data leaves it.

A download such as a PDF, installer or full-resolution image is additional traffic. Your estimate is useful only when it counts the same traffic that your host counts.
Hosts may measure traffic at different boundaries. Some report only bytes served by the origin server; others include a content delivery network (CDN), or report CDN usage as a separate allowance. A control panel can also include protocols that ordinary page-view analytics do not see. cPanel, for example, says bandwidth reporting can include HTTP, FTP, SMTP and POP3/IMAP transfers.

The calculation formula
Use this compact formula after converting every input to consistent units:
monthly bandwidth ≈ monthly visits × average requests (or pages) per visit × average transferred page size + monthly downloads × average download size
The result is a minimum estimate before unusual traffic. Apply a safety factor afterward. If your measurements are in megabytes, keep the calculation in megabytes and convert to gigabytes or terabytes only at the end.
1. Measure monthly visits
Use a representative period from your analytics, preferably several ordinary months rather than a single unusually quiet or busy week. If your source reports daily visits, calculate an average daily value and multiply by the number of days in the billing month. For a site with strong seasonality, calculate separate normal, campaign and peak-month cases instead of relying on one average.
Decide whether the visit number includes logged-in users, previews, staging traffic and internal staff. Exclude test traffic that the hosting plan will not serve, but do not remove legitimate visitors simply because they are inconvenient to count.
2. Determine requests or pages per visitor
Choose one definition and keep it consistent with your page-size measurement. You can use average pages viewed per visit, or average resource requests represented by a page load, depending on what your analytics and host logs expose.

If your page-size figure already includes the HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images delivered for one page view, use page views per visit. If you instead have a measured byte total per individual request, use the corresponding request count. Multiplying an asset-inclusive page size by every individual asset request would double-count traffic.

3. Measure transferred page size
Use bytes actually transferred after normal delivery and compression, not the uncompressed size shown in a source file or media library. Kinsta gives a simple illustration: an 80 KB HTML file may consume 40 KB of bandwidth after compression.
The most reliable value is a byte total from server logs, a host dashboard or a controlled browser measurement that reflects the assets normally delivered to a visitor. Record whether the value is decimal or binary: hosting dashboards commonly use decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB, while some operating-system tools use 1,024-based units.
4. Add downloads separately
Calculate downloadable traffic as:
monthly downloads × average download size
Include files delivered from WordPress, a private download area, a membership system or a separate download endpoint if those bytes are charged to the same allowance. A small number of large files can outweigh thousands of ordinary page views, so do not hide downloads inside an average page-size assumption.
5. Use the actual billing period
A “month” may mean a calendar month or a provider’s 30-day billing cycle. When converting a daily estimate, multiply by the number of days in the period you are sizing. For a month with 31 days, a daily value multiplied by 31 is more conservative than multiplying by 30.
6. Add surge headroom
Treat the formula as a floor, not as a recommended plan size. WPMU DEV states: “We recommend maintaining at least twice the minimum required bandwidth because surges in traffic tend to be exponential.” Apply that factor after adding page and download traffic:
planned capacity = calculated monthly minimum × safety factor
A factor of 2 is the cited minimum guidance. You may choose a larger margin when a campaign, product launch, video release or seasonal event could create a sharp peak and your host does not provide burst capacity.

Worked example: 30,000 monthly visits
Suppose your measurements show 30,000 monthly visits, 2.5 pages or equivalent page-load requests per visit, and an average transferred page size of 1.2 MB. The page-load component is:
30,000 × 2.5 × 1.2 MB = 90,000 MB
That is approximately 90 GB in decimal units before downloads, bots and surge headroom. If visitors download 4,000 files averaging 8 MB, add another 32,000 MB (32 GB). The measured minimum would then be 122 GB. Applying the cited two-times margin produces a planning figure of approximately 244 GB for that month.
This is arithmetic based on the stated inputs, not an industry benchmark. Replace every input with your own analytics and transferred-byte measurements. If your host excludes CDN responses from server bandwidth, the 90 GB page component may not match the host’s origin-bandwidth number; record CDN traffic separately.
What traffic should be counted?

Kinsta documents that CDN or edge-cache responses can be excluded from server-bandwidth figures and that CDN bandwidth may be a separate plan metric. Kinsta also notes that common bots may be filtered, so a host total and an analytics total can legitimately differ.

Start with analytics for demand
- Export visits, page views and pages per visit for the same date range.
- Separate ordinary traffic from campaigns, launches and seasonal peaks.
- Identify logged-in areas, previews and staging hosts so they are not accidentally mixed with public traffic.
Use host statistics for bytes
- Record the provider’s server-bandwidth total and, if available, its CDN total.
- Note the unit convention shown by the dashboard, such as GB or GiB.
- Check the reset date and whether the number is a calendar-month total, a rolling period or a billing-cycle total.
Use logs to explain mismatches
Server logs can reveal large files, repeated API calls, crawler bursts and protocols absent from analytics. Compare the log total with the host’s accounting boundary. Compression, cache hits, bot filtering and CDN delivery can all cause the byte total implied by page views to differ from the provider’s number.
Choosing a hosting plan from the result
After calculating planned capacity, compare the plan’s limits on the same basis. A plan that advertises a large visitor allowance may still have a smaller server-bandwidth, CDN or storage limit, while a bandwidth-based plan may not promise a specific number of visits.

Visit-based versus bandwidth-based pricing
Kinsta documents plans that can be expressed through visits or server bandwidth, with separate CDN bandwidth and storage considerations. If your pages are image-heavy, video-heavy or download-focused, a visit count alone may conceal substantial byte usage. If your pages are lightweight but receive many visits, a byte allowance can be more informative than a visit estimate.

Interpreting “unlimited” bandwidth
An “unlimited” label does not tell you that every related resource is unlimited. Read the terms for fair-use provisions, CPU or PHP-worker limits, storage, CDN quotas, download restrictions, account-wide pooling and the action taken during sustained high usage. Ask whether “unlimited” means no metered overage, no published byte cap, or simply an allowance enforced through throttling or upgrades.

Provider-specific capacity examples
WPMU DEV publishes plan capacities from 5 TB through 350 TB and describes those plans as having unlimited visitor numbers. Those figures describe that provider’s offerings; they are not WordPress-wide requirements and should not replace a calculation from your own transferred bytes.
Traffic spikes, campaigns and throughput
Monthly capacity protects against cumulative usage, but a short burst also tests simultaneous throughput and server resources. The WordPress.org Codex illustrates 100,000 hits in one day at 160 KB of transferred data per hit. That is about 16,000,000 KB in a day, or approximately 190 KB per second (about 1.5 Mb/s) sustained. The example shows why a daily total and a momentary traffic rate are different planning questions.
For a known event, estimate both:
- Monthly bytes: total page, asset and download traffic for the billing period.
- Peak rate: bytes likely to arrive during the busiest minute or hour.
A plan can have enough monthly terabytes but still struggle if the origin cannot process concurrent requests. Check the host’s CPU, memory, process, PHP-worker and rate-limit policies alongside bandwidth.

Set a baseline
Record monthly visits, page views, average transferred page size, downloads, origin bandwidth and CDN bandwidth. Keep the date range and unit convention with each figure so later comparisons remain valid.
Watch leading indicators
- Bandwidth growth that outpaces visits can indicate larger media, disabled compression, a new API integration or abusive downloads.
- Downloads rising faster than page views may signal a popular file, a hot-linked asset or an automated crawler.
- A sudden gap between analytics and the host total can indicate email, FTP, bot or CDN traffic.
Review after material changes
Recalculate after a redesign, image-quality change, video release, advertising campaign, viral post or seasonal shift. Replace assumptions with the newest measured transfer sizes instead of carrying an old average indefinitely.
Common calculation mistakes and fixes
Using file size instead of transferred size
A media-library or source-file size may be larger than the compressed bytes sent to visitors. Measure delivered bytes, and document whether caching and compression are included.

Counting only HTML
HTML is only one part of a page load. Include stylesheets, scripts, images, video, fonts and API responses that cross the provider’s accounting boundary.
Ignoring downloads
Large files can dominate the total. Keep a separate download line item so a change in file popularity is visible.
Assuming analytics equals billing
Analytics may filter bots and omit FTP, email or API traffic, while a host dashboard may exclude CDN responses. Compare definitions before treating a discrepancy as an error.
Planning to the exact average
An average month provides no protection against a surge. Apply at least the two-times margin cited by WPMU DEV, then test whether the provider has separate peak-rate or resource limits.
Mixing decimal and binary units
Keep calculations in one unit system. Label conversions explicitly so a number shown as 90 GB is not accidentally compared with a 90 GiB allowance as though they were identical.
A practical worksheet
- Write down the billing-period dates and the provider’s definitions for server and CDN bandwidth.
- Enter monthly visits and average pages or requests per visit from analytics.
- Enter the average transferred page size after compression, in MB or GB.
- Multiply those three values to obtain page-load traffic.
- List each significant download category, its monthly count and average size; multiply and sum them.
- Add page-load and download traffic to obtain the measured minimum.
- Multiply the minimum by at least 2 for surge headroom, or document a larger factor for a known event.
- Compare the planned capacity with server bandwidth, CDN bandwidth, visit, storage and overage rules for each candidate plan.
- After migration or a major content change, compare the worksheet with the host dashboard and logs and update the inputs.
Bottom line
WordPress bandwidth is a byte calculation, not a guess based on a site’s page count. Measure what visitors and other clients actually receive, add downloads and any traffic included by the host’s accounting rules, then size the plan above that minimum. Keep origin and CDN allowances distinct, investigate non-page protocols and bots, and retain at least twice the minimum when following WPMU DEV’s published guidance.
