Short answer: list every device you need to run, multiply each device’s actual running watts by its hours of use, and add those watt-hours together. Then add a stated allowance for conversion losses and uncertainty, check the station’s continuous-watt rating against simultaneous loads, and check its surge-watt rating against motor or compressor startup demand. The right capacity is the result of your load list and recharge plan—not a universal number of watt-hours.

Start with the three ratings that answer different questions

A portable power station is sized by more than its battery capacity. Three specifications must fit your equipment at the same time:

  • Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy. They are the starting point for estimating how long the battery can run your devices.
  • Continuous output (W) describes the inverter’s sustained power. Add the running wattage of devices that may operate simultaneously and compare that total with this rating.
  • Surge output (W) describes brief startup power. Refrigerators, pumps, compressors and other motors can demand substantially more power when starting than they use after they are running.

A large Wh figure cannot compensate for an inverter whose continuous output is too low, and a high continuous rating does not create more stored energy. Treat capacity, continuous output and surge output as separate checks.

1. Make a load list for the period you need to cover

Write down only the devices that must run during the outage, trip or work session. For each one, record its running wattage, the number of hours it will operate, and whether it overlaps with other loads. Include chargers and adapters: the station supplies the charger, not just the phone, laptop or medical device connected to it.

Use realistic wattage data

A label marked “60 W” is a useful starting point, but it may be a maximum or nominal figure rather than the energy the device draws continuously. Use the manufacturer’s energy information or a plug-in meter when available. For a refrigerator, BLUETTI Australia specifically recommends manufacturer data or real meter readings because the compressor cycles and there is no single duty cycle that applies to every model, room temperature or usage pattern.

Record simultaneous operation

Hours determine energy capacity; overlap determines inverter size. A router that runs for 10 hours and a laptop used for four hours contribute different Wh totals, but their wattages may need to be supported at the same moment. Mark devices that start together or are likely to run together, such as a refrigerator and a CPAP machine overnight.

Account for the time between recharges

For a multi-day event, calculate the hours until a realistic opportunity to recharge rather than assuming the station can be topped up whenever convenient. A station used for one evening has a different requirement from one that must bridge two nights before a vehicle, solar panel or wall outlet is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Convert each device into watt-hours

Use this formula for every device:

Device energy (Wh) = running power (W) × operating time (hours)

Calculate devices separately when their run times differ, then add the results. Do not multiply the combined wattage by one duration unless every device truly runs for that entire period.

Device Running watts Hours in the period Calculation Raw energy
Device A Enter measured or manufacturer value Enter required hours W × h Wh
Device B Enter measured or manufacturer value Enter required hours W × h Wh
Device C Enter measured or manufacturer value Enter required hours W × h Wh
Total raw demand Add all device Wh values

Keep the raw total visible. You will add a planning allowance in the next step, and separating the two makes your assumptions easy to change.

3. Add a practical allowance for losses and uncertainty

The battery does not deliver every stored watt-hour to an AC appliance. Inverter conversion, the station’s own electronics, cable losses and battery-management overhead reduce usable energy. Cycling appliances and uncertain measurements add another source of error.

Choose an allowance and state why you chose it. Anker SOLIX illustrates a 20% buffer in its August 9, 2026 UK guide. BLUETTI Australia’s October 7, 2026 guidance suggests approximately 10% for mostly DC or USB loads, 15% for mixed loads, and 15–20% for mostly AC or uncertain use. These are manufacturer planning recommendations, not a universal measured efficiency standard.

Apply the allowance as a multiplier:

Planned capacity (Wh) = raw device total × (1 + allowance)

Use case Illustrative allowance Multiplier When it may fit
Mostly DC or USB About 10% 1.10 Low-voltage electronics with little AC conversion
Mixed DC and AC About 15% 1.15 Several USB devices plus occasional AC equipment
Mostly AC or uncertain loads 15–20% 1.15–1.20 AC adapters, cycling appliances or uncertain measurements
Conservative planning example 20% 1.20 Anker SOLIX’s worked example for planning purposes

If the station maker publishes runtime guidance for the exact model, use it to refine the estimate. Do not present the resulting figure as guaranteed runtime: temperature, battery age, load shape and operating mode can change the result.

4. Check continuous output independently from capacity

Add the running watts of all equipment that could be on at once. The total must be within the station’s continuous AC or DC output, as appropriate. A station may have enough Wh for a long session yet shut down immediately if the inverter cannot sustain the simultaneous wattage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a laptop, router and CPAP are all operating at the same time, add their running figures for the continuous-output check. Their energy calculation still uses their individual hours; the output check uses the highest likely overlap.

Leave headroom when loads are uncertain or when another device may be connected later. The exact headroom is a planning choice, not a specification supplied by the sources; use the station manufacturer’s limits and warnings as the final constraint.

5. Check startup surge for motors and compressors

Some loads draw a short burst of power when starting. Compare the largest expected startup demand with the station’s surge-watt rating. A refrigerator may have a modest average consumption but a considerably higher compressor-start requirement. Pumps, fans, tools and other motor-driven equipment can behave similarly.

Find the startup or locked-rotor information in the appliance documentation when possible. If it is unavailable, ask the station manufacturer whether its inverter supports that appliance rather than assuming that a large Wh number is sufficient. Schneider Electric’s battery-bank guidance, published December 16, 2016 and last modified February 5, 2026, treats startup demand as a separate sizing issue for its specified battery/inverter systems; the principle applies here, but its exact figures and system assumptions should not be transferred to every portable station.

100 W × 5 h = 500 Wh raw demand

With the guide’s 20% buffer:

500 Wh × 1.20 = approximately 600 Wh planned capacity

This is an arithmetic illustration from the manufacturer’s guide, not an independent runtime test or a promise that every 600 Wh station will deliver exactly five hours.

BLUETTI’s laptop, router and CPAP example

BLUETTI Australia lists these separate calculations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Load Calculation Energy
Laptop 60 W × 4 h 240 Wh
Router 15 W × 10 h 150 Wh
CPAP machine 40 W × 8 h 320 Wh
Total 240 + 150 + 320 710 Wh raw

The 710 Wh figure is before a conversion allowance. The same BLUETTI guide also illustrates starting with a 900 Wh baseline in its margin table. Keep those figures as the source’s examples rather than treating either one as a universal recommendation for a household or a typical CPAP setup.

Capacity bands are hints, not answers

Anker SOLIX places occasional device charging at 300–500 Wh and weekend use at 700–1,200 Wh in its guide. Those bands are that manufacturer’s planning examples, not industry standards. Your device list may fall outside them because a refrigerator, heated appliance or medical device can change the total quickly.

Use a band only after doing the arithmetic. If your planned total is 640 Wh, a nominal 500 Wh station is not made adequate by calling the use “occasional”; choose a capacity that exceeds the calculated requirement and verify the output ratings.

Consider recharge time, not just the first discharge

A station that meets one outage may fail on the second if it cannot recharge in the available window. Record the energy you expect to use, then check the input power and charging methods against the time between uses.

  • Wall charging: compare the station’s input rate with the hours available before the next outage or trip.
  • Vehicle charging: account for the driving time and the vehicle outlet’s actual limits rather than assuming a full recharge during a short journey.
  • Solar charging: treat the stated panel input as a maximum; weather, orientation, shading and daylight reduce real harvest.
  • Multi-day operation: calculate the energy needed until the next dependable charging opportunity and keep critical loads separate from optional ones.

Charging rate does not increase the station’s Wh capacity. It changes how quickly the stored energy can be restored, so include it in the selection table rather than hiding it in a capacity guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the period: write the number of hours or days until you can realistically recharge.
  2. List essential devices: include chargers, adapters and any control equipment.
  3. Enter running watts: prefer measured consumption or manufacturer energy data for cycling appliances.
  4. Enter hours of operation: use each device’s own schedule, not one duration for the whole list.
  5. Calculate each Wh value: multiply watts by hours.
  6. Add the raw Wh total: keep this number separate from the allowance.
  7. Select an allowance: document whether you used roughly 10%, 15%, or 15–20% based on DC/AC mix and uncertainty.
  8. Check planned capacity: multiply the raw total by 1.10, 1.15 or 1.20 as appropriate, then choose a station whose rated Wh exceeds that requirement.
  9. Check continuous output: add the highest simultaneous running watts and compare with the inverter’s continuous rating.
  10. Check surge output: compare the largest motor or compressor startup demand with the station’s surge rating.
  11. Check recovery: verify wall, vehicle or solar charging rate for the time available between uses.
  12. Check practical fit: confirm weight, dimensions, connectors, operating temperature limits and any expansion restrictions.

Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by Wh alone

Symptom: the station has enough advertised capacity but shuts down when a device starts. Correction: perform the continuous and surge checks separately; inspect the inverter ratings, not just the battery label.

Using nameplate watts as all-day consumption

Symptom: the estimate is far higher or lower than observed runtime, especially for refrigerators. Correction: measure the appliance over a representative period or obtain manufacturer energy data, and describe the conditions of that measurement.

Multiplying a combined load by one duration

Symptom: the total is inflated because some devices run only briefly, or understated because one device runs overnight. Correction: calculate each device separately and add the individual Wh figures.

Ignoring conversion losses

Symptom: raw arithmetic predicts a full session but the battery empties early. Correction: apply and document a practical allowance; use the station maker’s runtime guidance when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the next recharge

Symptom: the station works once but is unavailable for the next outage or night. Correction: size the bridge period and verify charging input, not merely the first discharge.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate runtime by dividing Wh by watts?

You can use Wh ÷ W as a rough idealized runtime, but it ignores conversion losses, station overhead, cycling and battery limits. Apply your stated allowance and treat the result as planning guidance rather than a guarantee.

Should I buy the biggest station available?

Not automatically. Extra capacity adds cost and weight, while an oversized unit may still have unsuitable connectors, charging limits or surge behavior. Buy against your calculated Wh target, output checks and recharge plan, with enough practical headroom for uncertainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my appliance wattage is unknown?

Use the manufacturer’s energy information or measure the appliance with a plug-in meter. For cycling loads, measure long enough to include normal on-and-off behavior; a brief reading while the compressor is running is not a daily energy estimate.

Do USB and DC devices need the same allowance as AC devices?

Not necessarily. BLUETTI’s guidance suggests about 10% for mostly DC/USB loads, about 15% for mixed loads and 15–20% for mostly AC or uncertain use. Those percentages are planning recommendations, so adjust them when the specific station provides better runtime information.

Why does a refrigerator need both Wh and surge checks?

The Wh calculation covers energy over the required period, including compressor cycling. The surge check covers the brief startup burst. Passing one does not prove that the appliance will pass the other.

The decision in one sentence

Choose a station whose rated Wh exceeds your separately calculated device demand plus a documented allowance, whose continuous watts cover the highest simultaneous running load, whose surge watts cover every motor or compressor start, and whose charging method can restore the energy before you need it again.
