Use this formula: ROI (%) = [(incremental value attributable to the video − total video investment) ÷ total video investment] × 100. The difficult part is not the arithmetic. You must establish what would have happened without the video, assign a defensible value to the outcome, and count costs consistently. Views, watch time and platform-attributed revenue are evidence about delivery or response; they are not automatically incremental profit.
What branded-video ROI actually measures
Branded video can pursue several outcomes at once: immediate sales, qualified leads, awareness, consideration, preference or support for a wider campaign. ROI is meaningful only when the calculation names the business outcome and the period being evaluated. A video with millions of views may have no positive financial return, while a narrowly targeted video with fewer views can create substantial incremental profit.
For a direct-response objective, define incremental value as the additional contribution generated because people were exposed to the video. “Incremental” excludes conversions that would have occurred without the campaign. If your source data reports revenue rather than contribution or profit, say so explicitly and account for margin, discounts, returns, refunds and other variable costs before calling the result a return.

For a brand objective, the measured outcome may be a percentage-point lift in awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability or purchase intent. A lift is not a dollar amount by itself. You need a documented valuation model—such as the expected future contribution from additional purchasers—and sensitivity ranges showing how the result changes when assumptions change. No universal dollar value for one percentage point of brand lift is established by the measurement guidance cited here.

The formulas: ROI, incremental ROAS and related metrics
ROI
ROI (%) = ((incremental value − total video investment) / total video investment) × 100
Use one currency and one cost boundary. If incremental value is $300,000 and the defined investment is $120,000, ROI is (300,000 − 120,000) / 120,000 × 100 = 150%. The campaign returned $1.50 above each invested dollar under those assumptions. A result of 0% means the measured value exactly covered the included investment; a negative result means it did not.
Incremental ROAS (iROAS)
Google Ads Help defines incremental return on ad spend as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend: iROAS = incremental conversion value / total ad spend. If incremental conversion value is $300,000 and paid distribution is $80,000, iROAS is 3.75. That is not the same as ROI because production, talent, rights, post-production and measurement may sit outside ad spend, and iROAS does not subtract spend before dividing.

Cost per incremental conversion
When the objective is a measurable action, calculate cost per incremental conversion = total ad spend / incremental conversions. State whether the numerator is media spend only or the full video investment. Using the full investment can be useful for an all-in acquisition view, but it should not be presented as the platform’s iCPA definition unless the measurement system uses that scope.
Set the cost boundary before launch
There is no single mandatory definition of “video investment.” Choose one, document it and use the same categories for every campaign you compare. An all-in branded-video scope commonly includes:
- Concept development, scripting, production management and crew.
- Talent, presenter, creator or performer fees.
- Studio, location, equipment, travel, insurance and permits.
- Editing, motion graphics, sound, color, captions, translations and versioning.
- Music, footage, image, trademark and other licensing or usage rights.
- Paid distribution, including media, trafficking and platform fees.
- Measurement costs, such as survey, experiment, analytics or panel fees.
Some organizations report two views: media-only efficiency for channel buying and all-in program ROI for the business decision. Label both. Do not compare one campaign’s media-only denominator with another campaign’s all-in denominator.

Set the time window as well. A conversion window that ends seven days after exposure will not be comparable with one that remains open for 30 days. Brand effects may mature later than direct conversions, so record the observation period and any modeled future value separately.

Sales or revenue
Define the conversion event, eligible geography, currency, product margin and treatment of refunds or cancellations. If a sale produces $100 in revenue but only $40 in contribution after variable costs, use $40 when the decision concerns profit. If finance requires revenue as the value basis, call the metric “incremental revenue ROI” and do not describe it as profit ROI.
Leads or applications
Assign a value based on the expected contribution of a qualified lead, not merely the form-completion count. For example, a lead value can incorporate qualification rate, close rate, average contribution and expected cancellations. Keep the assumptions in a separate column so the calculation can be recomputed when actual downstream results arrive.
Awareness and consideration
Use a brand-lift study when the objective is upper-funnel change. Google Display & Video 360’s Brand Lift guidance describes survey comparisons for awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability and purchase intent. Report the exposed and control responses, the percentage-point lift, sample or response counts and confidence information supplied by the study. If you monetize the lift, show the conversion from percentage points to expected people, purchasers and contribution; the measurement platform does not supply a universal financial value.
Multiple objectives
Do not add incompatible metrics into one unexplained score. Maintain a primary ROI calculation for the declared business objective, then report supporting outcomes—such as reach, completed views or brand lift—in their own sections. A composite score is defensible only when every component has an explicit weight and valuation model approved before launch.

A randomized lift design is stronger for causal ROI. Google’s Conversion Lift based on users measurement compares a treatment group eligible to see ads with a control group withheld from ads. Its definition is: incremental conversions = treatment conversions − control conversions. Incremental conversion value is calculated the same way using the value observed in each group. The resulting estimate applies to the measured audience, campaign and period; it is not automatically a forecast for every market or future flight.
When a randomized test is feasible
- Define the eligible audience, geography, conversion event and value rule.
- Randomly assign eligible users to treatment or a withheld control, following the platform’s study requirements.
- Run the video and avoid changes that affect only one group.
- Keep the exposure and conversion windows fixed and record them.
- Read incremental conversions and incremental value from the completed study, including uncertainty or confidence information.
- Apply the chosen investment boundary and calculate ROI; report iROAS separately if media efficiency is also needed.
When an experiment is not available
Use attribution, geo experiments, matched-market tests or modeled analysis only with a clear statement of their limitations. A before-and-after comparison can be confounded by seasonality, pricing, distribution, competitor activity or unrelated creative. Treat it as directional unless the design controls those factors. Never relabel attributed conversions as incremental conversions.
Match the measurement method to the question
| Method | Best use | What is compared | Limitation to state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand-lift survey | Awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability and purchase intent | Survey responses from exposed and control groups | More responses are generally needed to detect smaller absolute lifts; the lift does not provide a universal dollar value for brand equity. |
| Conversion-lift experiment | Incremental conversions and conversion value | Treatment group versus a withheld control group | Availability and design depend on the platform and account; the result is tied to the measured audience and period. |
| Standard attribution | Routine path and channel reporting | Credit assigned to recorded interactions under a selected attribution method | Assigned credit is not automatically causal incrementality. |
| Delivery and engagement metrics | Whether the video was delivered, watched or engaged with | Views, watch time, reach and related platform signals | These signals do not establish financial ROI, and their definitions vary by environment. |
The Interactive Advertising Bureau’s “The Anatomy Series: How Video Is Measured in Digital Advertising,” published October 7, 2025, warns that “the signals, standards, and methodologies vary widely across environments.” Web, social, connected TV and streaming placements can therefore produce numbers that look similar but are not directly comparable.
Build a measurement plan before production
1. Write a one-sentence objective
Specify the intended change, audience, market and time frame: for example, “Increase first-time purchases among eligible adults in the defined region during the campaign and 30-day post-exposure window.” This prevents a later switch from sales to views simply because views are larger.
2. Define the unit of value
Record the conversion event, monetary value, margin treatment, currency, attribution or lift method, and rules for duplicates, cancellations and refunds. For brand outcomes, define the survey question, response scale and valuation model—or state that the result will remain non-monetized.
3. Select treatment and control logic
Reserve a randomized control whenever the platform and audience permit it. Document eligibility, exclusions, frequency limits, cross-device handling and the dates on which assignment begins and ends. If a control is not possible, state what alternative design will be used and which confounders remain.

4. Freeze the investment ledger
Create a ledger with one row per cost category, invoice or internal allocation. Mark each item as included or excluded from the ROI denominator. Keep paid distribution separate from fixed production so you can calculate both all-in ROI and media-only iROAS without changing the source data.
5. Decide reporting thresholds
Set the minimum response count, confidence or decision rule before seeing results. Google’s Brand Lift documentation notes that smaller absolute lifts generally require more responses to detect. A non-significant result is not proof that the video had no effect; it may indicate that the sample was insufficient to distinguish a small effect from noise.
Calculate the result step by step
- Export treatment and control outcomes. Capture conversions and conversion value for each group, plus audience sizes and the exact measurement period.
- Compute the incremental outcome. Subtract control conversions from treatment conversions. Subtract control conversion value from treatment conversion value. Preserve the unrounded figures for auditability.
- Check plausibility. Confirm that group definitions, exposure windows, currency and duplicate handling match the plan. Investigate negative or unexpectedly large lifts before applying financial assumptions.
- Apply the value basis. Convert revenue to contribution if that is the agreed basis; apply lead-quality or downstream-close assumptions where required. Keep modeled and observed value clearly separated.
- Sum the selected investment categories. Include the same production, talent, post, rights, distribution and measurement categories used in the plan. Do not add costs to only one side of a comparison.
- Calculate ROI. Use
((incremental value − total investment) / total investment) × 100. - Calculate companion metrics. If relevant, show iROAS as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend and cost per incremental conversion as total ad spend divided by incremental conversions.
- Attach uncertainty and scope. Report the study design, audience, dates, response counts, confidence or interval information, and assumptions. State that the result applies to the measured setting.
Worked examples
Direct sales with an all-in denominator
A campaign records $300,000 of incremental contribution value from a conversion-lift experiment. The ledger contains $45,000 production, $15,000 talent and rights, $20,000 post-production, $80,000 paid distribution and $10,000 measurement, for a total investment of $170,000. ROI is (300,000 − 170,000) / 170,000 × 100 = 76.5% (rounded to one decimal place). The same campaign’s iROAS is 300,000 / 80,000 = 3.75. The two figures answer different questions because one includes the complete declared program cost and the other uses ad spend only.
Attributed revenue without incrementality
Suppose an ad platform reports $250,000 in attributed revenue against $100,000 in media spend, but no control or lift design was run. You may report a platform-attributed ROAS of 2.5 if the attribution rule is named. You cannot call $250,000 incremental value or claim a causal ROI from that report alone. The missing counterfactual is the revenue that would have occurred without exposure.
Brand lift with an explicit valuation model
A survey finds a two-percentage-point increase in consideration among the exposed group relative to control. That is a brand-lift result, not $X of return. A company could model expected additional buyers from the lifted population, multiply by expected contribution per buyer and discount for uncertainty, but every assumption must be shown. Report the measured lift separately from the modeled monetary scenario and include low, central and high cases rather than presenting one unsupported dollar figure.
How to interpret null, negative or surprising results
No detectable lift
Check response counts, confidence intervals, audience eligibility and survey quality before concluding that the creative failed. Smaller absolute brand lifts require more responses to detect. A result near zero may mean no material effect, an underpowered study or an effect outside the selected question.

Attributed conversions but no incremental conversions
This pattern indicates that the video received credit for actions that the control group would largely have taken anyway. Keep the attribution report for path analysis, but use the lift result for causal ROI.
Early branding and weak conversion movement
Google’s brand-measurement guidance cautions that late or subtle branding can make it harder for viewers to attribute an ad to the advertised brand, while early branding alone may not significantly lift conversions. Examine recall and brand association alongside conversion results; do not infer a sales effect from branding placement alone.
Negative ROI
A negative result is a valid decision signal when the scope and measurement are sound. Separate creative, audience, media and offer hypotheses, then use the evidence to decide whether to revise, stop or run a better-controlled follow-up. Do not erase a negative result by switching from all-in costs to media-only costs after the fact.
Make results comparable across platforms and campaigns
Before comparing two videos, align six dimensions:
- Outcome: the same conversion, brand question or contribution definition.
- Incrementality design: comparable treatment/control or experimental approach.
- Audience: geography, eligibility, customer status and reach.
- Exposure and conversion window: matching dates, frequency and post-view rules.
- Cost boundary: identical included categories and currency treatment.
- Environment and signal definitions: equivalent view, reach and completion standards where delivery metrics are used.
If any dimension differs, present the figures side by side with the difference stated rather than ranking campaigns as though they were equivalent. The IAB’s October 2025 guidance is especially relevant when a plan combines web, social, connected TV and streaming inventory.
Common calculation errors and fixes
- Calling views ROI: rename the metric as views, reach, completion rate or cost per completed view; add a business-outcome measure.
- Using attributed revenue as incremental value: run a lift test where feasible or label the result as attributed and directional.
- Confusing ROAS with ROI: show the denominator and whether investment was subtracted.
- Mixing revenue and profit: choose revenue or contribution before launch and apply it consistently.
- Omitting production and rights: either include them in an all-in scope or clearly call the metric media-only.
- Changing the window after seeing results: predefine exposure, conversion and brand-observation periods.
- Monetizing brand lift without assumptions: publish the valuation model, ranges and sensitivity instead of a single unexplained dollar figure.
- Comparing incompatible environments: align definitions across web, social, connected TV and streaming before combining totals.
- Ignoring uncertainty: include response counts, intervals or confidence information and explain what the design can detect.
What a decision-ready ROI report contains
A useful report lets a finance or marketing reviewer reproduce the number without guessing. Include:
- Objective, audience, geography, campaign dates and observation window.
- Primary outcome and value basis, including margin or lead-value assumptions.
- Treatment/control or other study design, assignment rules and exclusions.
- Treatment and control counts, conversions, conversion value and calculated incrementality.
- Every included cost category and the resulting total investment.
- ROI formula with unrounded inputs, plus iROAS or cost per incremental conversion when relevant.
- Brand-lift questions, percentage-point changes, response counts and uncertainty information for upper-funnel outcomes.
- Known limitations, modeled components, sensitivity ranges and the population to which the result applies.
Keep delivery metrics in the report because they explain how the video was consumed, but do not let them substitute for the declared business outcome. This separation makes a high-reach awareness result, a causal sales result and a platform-attributed path report understandable without collapsing them into one misleading number.
Bottom line
Calculate branded-video ROI from incremental value, not exposure totals: define the outcome and valuation, set an explicit all-in or media-only cost boundary, estimate the counterfactual with a treatment-versus-control design when possible, and disclose uncertainty. Label iROAS and attributed revenue as different metrics. For brand lift, report the measured percentage-point change and monetize it only through a transparent, assumption-based model.
