The reliable way to price a Bitcoin-backed loan is to calculate from the cash or stablecoin you will actually receive, then add interest and every mandatory charge over the period you expect to borrow. Read the agreement for the rate basis, day-count denominator, compounding, payment dates, collateral deductions, and default remedies. A headline interest rate by itself is not an all-in cost.

Keep two outputs separate: scheduled borrowing cost (interest and required fees) and collateral risk (margin calls, forced sale and liquidation charges). A loan can look inexpensive on its payment schedule while a Bitcoin price decline creates a much larger contingent loss.

Start with the amount you actually receive

Write down the gross principal in the offer, then subtract any charges withheld before the funds reach you. The result is your net proceeds, which is the amount that should anchor an effective-cost comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Amount Calculation Use in your worksheet
Gross principal Loan balance stated in the contract Starting balance for interest unless the agreement uses another balance
Upfront charges withheld Origination, arrangement, processing or other deductions taken from proceeds Subtract before calculating what you received
Net proceeds Gross principal minus upfront deductions Amount delivered to your wallet or bank account
Principal repaid All scheduled and final principal installments Include in total repayment; exclude when reporting borrowing cost alone

For example, a contract showing a $20,000 principal with a $300 fee withheld gives you $19,700. Calling the loan “$20,000 received” would understate the cost because you repay against $20,000 while using only $19,700.

Identify the interest method before doing arithmetic

Use the agreement’s own definitions. Do not assume a 365-day year, simple interest, a constant principal, or annual compounding. The central variables are:

  • Rate: fixed or floating, and expressed as a decimal in the calculation (2.50% becomes 0.025).
  • Balance: original principal, current outstanding principal, or another amount specified by the lender.
  • Accrual: simple, compounded, or calculated on each day’s changing balance.
  • Elapsed time: actual calendar days or a stated period convention.
  • Day-count denominator: 360, 365, actual/actual or another basis.
  • Payment timing: interest-only installments, amortization, a bullet payment at maturity, or a combination.

For a simple-interest offer that accrues on an unchanged principal, the estimate is:

Interest = principal × annual rate × elapsed days ÷ contract day-count denominator

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace that formula when the document says interest compounds, accrues on a declining balance, is paid periodically and capitalized when missed, or uses another convention. A fee that is “annualized” may still be calculated daily. One SEC-filed digital-asset loan form, for instance, states that its annualized loan fee is calculated on actual elapsed days using a 360-day basis: SEC-filed digital-asset loan form.

Separate the four cost buckets

1. Interest and scheduled principal

For every payment date, record the interest due, principal due and remaining balance. Interest-only loans may have small periodic payments followed by a large maturity payment. Amortizing loans spread principal across installments. A bullet loan can show low interim outlay but require the entire principal at maturity.

2. Mandatory cash fees

List each charge that must be paid in cash, including upfront, recurring, custody, network, extension, repayment, default and other contractual fees. Verify whether a quoted rate already includes a fee; adding it again would double-count the cost.

3. Charges deducted from collateral

Record Bitcoin-denominated fees separately from cash payments. If you convert a collateral deduction to dollars, state the valuation date, Bitcoin price source and units used. The dollar value changes as Bitcoin’s price changes, so a conversion made at origination is not a timeless measure of the eventual loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Contingent liquidation amounts

A liquidation fee is not part of the ordinary payment schedule unless the triggering event occurs. Model it as a separate downside scenario alongside the scheduled cost. The agreement may also allow the lender to sell enough Bitcoin to recover principal, interest, fees and expenses.

Compute total borrowing cost and total repayment

Use two totals so that readers, partners or accountants do not confuse the price of credit with the amount returned to the lender:

  • Cost of borrowing: interest plus mandatory fees, including required collateral-deducted charges valued under a stated method. Do not include principal.
  • Total repayment: principal plus interest plus all required charges paid during the planned term.

If the loan deducts an upfront fee, include it in the cost of borrowing even though it never appears as a later cash payment. If the lender withholds the fee from proceeds, it is already reflected in the difference between gross principal and net proceeds; do not add it a second time.

Worked calculation using a contract-style example

The following numbers illustrate the mechanics; they are not a market quote. A filed Bitcoin-collateralized loan agreement specifies simple interest of 2.50% per annum, actual elapsed days, a 360-day year, quarterly interest payments and a stated 70% loan-to-value example. Those are terms of that particular agreement filed in 2022, not a recommendation or market average: SEC-filed Bitcoin-collateralized loan agreement.

  1. Convert 2.50% to 0.025.
  2. Multiply $10,000 × 0.025 × 90.
  3. Divide by the contractual 360-day denominator.
  4. The interest for those 90 days is $62.50.

If four 90-day periods were exactly the contract’s schedule, the simple-interest estimate would be $250 for a 360-day year, before any other charges. Real calendar quarters can contain different numbers of days, and the agreement may define payment dates differently, so use the actual dates in the document rather than assuming four identical periods.

Now suppose the same offer withholds a $150 arrangement fee from proceeds. You would receive $9,850, pay $250 of scheduled interest over the year, return $10,000 of principal, and pay the $150 fee. The cost of borrowing is $400; total repayment is $10,400; the net amount received is $9,850. This arithmetic still is not an APR because APR requires the timing of the $9,850 receipt and every payment to be evaluated under the applicable calculation rules.

Why APR is not the same as the stated interest rate

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s official loan-calculation disclosure defines “Amount Financed” as the amount available after upfront finance charges, “Finance Charge” as the dollar cost of the loan, and “Total of Payments” as the scheduled total. It defines APR as costs over the loan term expressed as a rate and explicitly says: Annual Percentage Rate (APR). Your costs over the loan term expressed as a rate. This is not your interest rate. See the CFPB Loan Calculations disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CFPB supervisory manual explains that APR measures total credit cost, can include transaction charges and depends on the amount financed and timing of receipts and payments. It gives an example in which two loans have the same finance charge but different APRs because their amounts financed and payment schedules differ: CFPB Supervision and Examination Manual, TILA section. The manual states: Since an APR measures the total cost of credit, including costs such as transaction charges or premiums for credit guarantee insurance, it is not an “interest” rate, as that term is generally used.

These are U.S. consumer-credit concepts. They do not establish that every Bitcoin-backed loan in every jurisdiction must disclose APR in the same way. For a rate-based comparison, list the date and amount of the net advance, then the date and amount of every payment and charge. Use the APR method required for the relevant jurisdiction or contract; do not label a simple interest-plus-fees ratio as APR.

Comparison axis Questions to answer from the offer Why it matters
Net proceeds How much arrives after deductions? Two loans with the same face principal can deliver different usable cash.
Rate mechanics Is the rate fixed or floating? Is interest simple or compounded? What balance and day-count basis are used? The same percentage can produce different dollars under different accrual rules.
Payment schedule Are payments interest-only, amortizing or due as a bullet at maturity? What are the exact dates? Timing changes cash needs and any annualized comparison.
Mandatory fees Which fees are upfront, recurring, custody, network, extension, repayment, default or liquidation charges? Which are included in the quote? Missing or double-counting one fee distorts the total.
Collateral conditions What are the opening LTV, margin-call trigger, liquidation threshold, cure period, top-up rights and custody arrangements? These terms determine the chance and size of a forced sale.
Early repayment and maturity Is there a prepayment charge? Can the term be extended? Does the full balance fall due at maturity? A planned early payoff can change both interest and fees.

Do not rank offers by nominal rate alone. An offer with a lower percentage but a large upfront deduction may provide less usable cash than one with a higher percentage and no deduction. Conversely, a longer term can increase total interest even when its annual rate looks attractive.

Model Bitcoin collateral and liquidation separately

Loan-to-value (LTV) is a collateral ratio, not a borrowing-cost measure. If you borrow $7,000 against Bitcoin valued at $10,000, the opening LTV is 70%. A price decline raises LTV even though the scheduled interest calculation has not changed.

Contracts normally define a margin ratio and a liquidation ratio. A current SEC filing says that when the applicable ratio falls to or below the liquidation ratio, the lender may liquidate pledged Bitcoin under the agreement: SEC filing on margin ratio and liquidation. Your worksheet should therefore include:

  • Opening collateral quantity and the valuation price used.
  • Opening LTV and the formula for recalculating it.
  • Margin-call level and how notice is delivered.
  • Liquidation threshold and the time allowed to cure.
  • Whether you can add Bitcoin, repay part of the loan or take another permitted action to restore the ratio.
  • Who controls the keys or custody account and what the agreement permits after a trigger.
  • Liquidation fee, sale expenses and the treatment of any excess or shortfall.

A live BTCBacked borrowing disclosure illustrates why these entries are provider-specific: it states a one-time platform fee of 1.5% per year of the loan term, deducted from Bitcoin collateral, and a 5% liquidation fee that applies only under its stated default or failure-to-meet-margin conditions. The page was accessed on 2026-10-13 and may change: BTCBacked borrowing disclosure. Do not apply those figures to another lender.

For a downside scenario, estimate the Bitcoin sold at the contractual trigger, multiply by the stated sale-price convention, subtract the applicable liquidation fee and other permitted expenses, then compare the proceeds with the outstanding debt. Keep that scenario outside the scheduled-cost total unless the trigger actually occurs.

Build the calculation step by step

  1. Copy the economic terms. Record principal, currency or stablecoin, rate, whether it floats, start date, maturity date and every payment date.
  2. Copy the accrual language. Note simple or compound treatment, the balance used, actual-day or period method and denominator such as 360 or 365.
  3. List deductions at funding. Enter each upfront charge and calculate net proceeds.
  4. Project each interest period. Apply the contract formula to the exact elapsed days and expected outstanding balance.
  5. Schedule principal. Enter amortization installments or the maturity bullet separately from interest.
  6. Add mandatory cash charges. Include recurring, custody, network, extension, repayment and default fees when the contract requires them.
  7. Add collateral deductions. Keep Bitcoin-denominated amounts in Bitcoin and document any conversion price and date.
  8. Calculate both totals. Produce cost of borrowing and total repayment, with principal included only in the latter.
  9. Run the collateral scenarios. Test the margin-call and liquidation rules at several Bitcoin prices and include cure time and permitted top-ups.
  10. Compare offers by dates and amounts. If an APR or effective annual rate is required, use the governing jurisdiction’s method on the complete cash-flow series.

Common calculation errors and how to fix them

Using the headline principal as the amount received

Symptom: The spreadsheet treats $20,000 of stated principal as $20,000 of usable funds despite an upfront deduction. Fix: create a separate net-proceeds line and start the comparison with that amount.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Assuming a 365-day year

Symptom: The result differs from the lender’s invoice even though the rate appears correct. Fix: copy the day-count denominator from the agreement. The filed 2.50% example uses actual days over 360, while another digital-asset form also specifies actual days and 360 for its annualized fee; neither proves that other contracts use the same basis.

Applying simple interest to a changing balance

Symptom: Interest remains constant after principal payments. Fix: calculate each period on the balance the contract identifies, and check whether unpaid interest is capitalized.

Adding a fee twice

Symptom: A fee withheld from proceeds is also added to the final cash total. Fix: record the deduction once in net proceeds and once in the cost ledger only as an accounting representation, not as a second payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling a fee-to-principal ratio APR

Symptom: Total fees divided by principal is reported as an annual percentage rate. Fix: label it a fee ratio, or calculate an effective annualized comparison from dated cash flows using the applicable rules.

Treating liquidation as a scheduled fee

Symptom: A 5% liquidation charge is added to every ordinary repayment projection. Fix: place it in a contingent scenario and apply it only if the contract’s trigger occurs.

Ignoring maturity or extension terms

Symptom: The worksheet ends after the last interest installment even though principal remains outstanding. Fix: include the maturity bullet, any extension fee and the rate that applies during an extension.

What the contract should answer before you sign

  • Exactly how much will be delivered after every deduction?
  • Is the rate fixed, floating or subject to a reset?
  • What balance accrues interest each day?
  • What day-count denominator and rounding rules apply?
  • When are interest and principal due, and what happens after a missed payment?
  • Which charges are paid in cash and which are taken from Bitcoin?
  • Are custody, network, withdrawal, extension, prepayment, default or legal expenses chargeable?
  • What LTV or margin ratio starts a call, and what ratio permits liquidation?
  • How much time is available to cure, and can you add collateral or repay part of the loan?
  • How is Bitcoin valued for margin tests, collateral deductions and liquidation?
  • Can the lender liquidate without further consent after a trigger?
  • What happens to a surplus or deficiency after sale?
  • Which jurisdiction’s disclosure and consumer-protection rules apply?

Limits of a cost calculation

The arithmetic can tell you what the stated terms imply; it cannot guarantee that the lender will remain solvent, that collateral custody will be available, or that a market sale will execute at the assumed price. Legal status, consumer protections, program availability and fee treatment vary by jurisdiction, borrower, lender and contract form. Treat every rate, fee, LTV and liquidation rule as specific to the offer and the date you received it.

Keep a dated copy of the agreement, fee schedule, wallet records, payment confirmations and price sources used for collateral valuations. Recalculate when the rate floats, the term is extended, principal changes or the lender updates its fee schedule.

The Bottom Line

Use net proceeds, the contract’s exact accrual convention and every mandatory charge to calculate scheduled borrowing cost. Compare dated cash flows for any effective annualized rate, and model margin calls and liquidation as separate collateral-risk scenarios rather than ordinary loan fees.
