To estimate what a U.S.-dollar purchase will cost on a Canadian-dollar card, multiply its USD price by a USD-to-CAD exchange rate, then add your card’s foreign-currency conversion fee. The estimate can differ from the statement amount because your issuer’s rate, fee, and conversion timing determine the final charge.
Use this formula
Estimated CAD total = USD purchase price × USD-to-CAD exchange rate × (1 + foreign-currency conversion fee rate)
For example, if a card charges a 2.5% fee, use 0.025 in the formula. The fee is calculated on the converted Canadian-dollar amount, not on the original USD price. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) illustrates the same sequence with a euro purchase: convert the purchase price to CAD, calculate the fee on that CAD amount, and add it. The 2.5% in that illustration is not a standard fee for all cards; check your card agreement for your rate. FCAC: How credit cards work.
Calculate an estimate step by step
- Confirm the purchase currency. Check that the merchant will charge you in USD, rather than showing a price in USD but converting it to CAD at checkout.
- Find a USD-to-CAD rate. For an estimate, use a dated reference rate such as the Bank of Canada’s daily rate. Its rates are indicative, not a promise of the rate your card issuer will apply.
- Convert the purchase price. Multiply the USD price by the rate, expressed as Canadian dollars per U.S. dollar.
- Find your card’s conversion fee. Check the card agreement and express the fee as a decimal—for instance, 2.5% becomes 0.025.
- Calculate the fee and add it. Multiply the converted CAD amount by the fee rate, then add that fee to the converted amount.
Hypothetical example
Suppose a purchase is US$100, the assumed exchange rate is C$1.40 per US$1, and the assumed card fee is 2.5%. These are illustrative assumptions, not a current exchange-rate quote or a claim about every card.

Choose a rate—and understand why the estimate can differ
The Bank of Canada says its exchange rates are indicative rates based on averages of aggregated financial-institution quotes. It expresses rates as one unit of foreign currency converted into Canadian dollars and publishes daily averages once each business day by 16:30 ET. For historical context, its Daily Digest listed USD/CAD at 1.4246 on 2026-10-02; that dated value should not be treated as today’s rate. Check the Bank of Canada Daily Digest for a fresh reference rate when making an estimate.
Your issuer may use a different conversion rate or method. FCAC explains that some financial institutions convert directly into CAD, while others may route the transaction through USD. The applicable rate may also depend on when the transaction posts. The issuer’s agreement governs its conversion method and fee; a public reference rate is useful for estimation, not a guarantee of the eventual statement amount. See FCAC’s sample credit agreement for an example of wording that applies a rate in effect when a transaction posts.

Check the checkout currency before paying
Some online listings do not make the currency prominent until checkout or disclose exchange-rate information in fine print. Before confirming, look for the currency symbol or code beside the total and review any option to pay in CAD. A merchant’s conversion offer can use a different rate from the conversion your card would apply, so compare the displayed CAD total with your estimate before choosing. The Competition Bureau’s guidance on U.S. and Canadian dollar price disclosure explains why it is worth checking which currency a price represents.

Compare payment options if you often buy in USD
If USD purchases are frequent, compare how each option handles currency conversion rather than assuming one card is always cheaper. FCAC notes that a U.S.-dollar credit card may suit people who often buy in U.S. dollars and may avoid foreign-currency conversion rates. Its account terms and costs still matter, so compare the relevant details before deciding.
