For U.S. federal tax purposes, Bitcoin is property. You generally calculate a taxable gain or loss each time you sell Bitcoin for dollars, exchange it for another digital asset, spend it on goods or services, or use it to pay a transaction service. The basic calculation is:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis of the specific Bitcoin units disposed of.
Perform the calculation for every disposition in U.S. dollars, determine whether each result is short-term or long-term, and report capital-asset dispositions on Form 8949 and Schedule D. Bitcoin received as wages, business income, mining rewards, staking rewards, or another type of income follows different reporting rules before any later sale or spending is calculated.

The calculation: amount realized minus adjusted basis
Start a separate worksheet row for each disposition. Record the units disposed of, identify their adjusted basis and acquisition date, calculate the U.S.-dollar amount realized, and subtract basis.
| Item | What to include |
|---|---|
| Amount realized | Cash received plus the fair market value of property or services received, reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to that disposition. |
| Adjusted basis | The U.S.-dollar basis of the particular Bitcoin units identified as sold, exchanged, or spent, including allowable acquisition costs and later adjustments. |
| Result | A positive number is a gain; a negative number is a loss. Classify it as short-term or long-term from the identified units’ holding period. |
For an illustration only, if the identified units have an adjusted basis of $8,000 and the amount realized after applicable costs is $10,000, the arithmetic gain is $2,000. Those are invented inputs, not an IRS example or a typical return.
Which Bitcoin events require a calculation?
Do not limit your review to withdrawals to a bank account. A disposition can occur whenever ownership of specific units is exchanged for cash, another asset, or a service.
| Event | Usually treated as | What to calculate |
|---|---|---|
| Sell Bitcoin for U.S. dollars | Capital-asset disposition if the Bitcoin was held as an investment | Cash proceeds, less allocable selling costs, minus basis of the units sold. |
| Exchange Bitcoin for another digital asset | Disposition even though no dollars were received | Use the U.S.-dollar fair market value of the property received at the exchange, less allocable costs, minus Bitcoin basis. |
| Buy goods or services with Bitcoin | Disposition of the Bitcoin used to pay | Use the value of the goods or services received, less allocable costs, minus basis of the units spent. |
| Pay a transaction service in Bitcoin | Disposition of the units used for the fee | Calculate gain or loss on those units; the fee may also be a transaction cost of the underlying transaction when the IRS rules allow it. |
| Move Bitcoin between your own wallets or accounts | Generally a transfer rather than a sale | Keep records and distinguish the transfer from a disposition. A fee paid in Bitcoin to a third-party transfer service can itself be a disposition. |
| Receive Bitcoin as wages, contractor pay, mining, staking, or another income item | Income event, not merely a capital gain | Report the receipt under the appropriate income rules. If the Bitcoin is later sold or spent, perform a separate disposition calculation. |
The IRS says digital-asset transactions must be reported whether or not they produce a taxable gain or loss. A transfer between accounts you own should not be casually reported as a sale, but it still needs documentation showing what moved, when, and where it went.
Step-by-step method for each disposition
- Collect the transaction record. Note the date and time, quantity of Bitcoin, wallet or account, counterparty or platform, proceeds or property received, and every fee.
- Determine the event type. Mark it as a cash sale, crypto-to-crypto exchange, purchase, service-fee payment, own-account transfer, or receipt of income.
- Identify the exact units disposed of. Match the transaction to a lot or lots using the identification rules that apply to your custody arrangement and tax year.
- Convert values to U.S. dollars. Use the fair market value at the time of the transaction for noncash consideration and retain the pricing record used.
- Compute amount realized. Add cash and fair market value of property or services received, then subtract digital-asset transaction costs that are allocable to the disposition.
- Compute adjusted basis. Use the basis of the identified units, including allowable acquisition costs and any applicable adjustments.
- Subtract basis from amount realized. Record the resulting gain or loss with enough precision to reconcile your return and account statements.
- Classify the holding period. Use the acquisition date of the identified units. The holding period starts the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date.
- Prepare the return entry. Capital-asset dispositions generally go on Form 8949 and flow to Schedule D. Income receipts may require wage, Schedule C, or other forms instead.
How to find your Bitcoin cost basis
Basis is not always the amount shown on an exchange screen. It belongs to particular units and can change under applicable tax rules.
Bitcoin purchased with dollars
The IRS legacy virtual-currency FAQ states that basis generally includes the amount paid to acquire Bitcoin plus fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs, all measured in U.S. dollars. Preserve the trade confirmation and a breakdown of the acquisition fee. For 2025 and later transactions, check the current digital-asset FAQs and the instructions for the tax year being filed.

Bitcoin received as income
Bitcoin received as wages, independent-contractor compensation, mining, staking, or another income event has transaction-specific income and basis consequences. Do not apply the simple “purchase price plus fee” rule to every receipt. Keep the income-reporting record and the value used when the Bitcoin was received. If those units are later disposed of, that basis is used in the separate gain-or-loss calculation.

Gifts, exchanges, and other receipts
A gift, exchange, transfer, or other acquisition can have rules different from a cash purchase. Gather the history for the exact units and use the current IRS guidance applicable to the transaction date rather than assigning a basis from a generic portfolio average.
Specific identification when you bought Bitcoin in multiple lots
If you acquired Bitcoin at different prices, the units sold must be identified. The basis and holding period follow the units identified as disposed of; choosing a different lot can change both the gain amount and whether it is short-term or long-term.
Current IRS guidance describes specific-identification requirements. For transactions after December 31, 2025, a standing instruction to a custodial broker is permitted only when it is timely, uses identifiers sufficient for the broker to identify the units’ basis and holding period, and is supported by adequate records. A platform’s default display or a personal assumption about first-in, first-out does not replace the applicable identification procedure.
Records that support an identification
- Acquisition date and time for each lot.
- Quantity and unique transaction or lot identifier.
- Wallet or custodial account holding the units.
- Unit basis, acquisition fees, and any adjustments.
- The instruction or confirmation sent before the disposition, when a broker identification is required.
- Evidence that the broker acknowledged or applied the identification, when available.
Units held on January 1, 2025
Revenue Procedure 2024-28 provides a safe harbor for allocating unused basis to units held within each wallet or account as taxpayers moved to the newer basis-identification methodology. The safe harbor does not let you pool unused basis freely across every wallet or account. Keep the allocation by wallet or account and retain the records supporting it.
Short-term versus long-term Bitcoin gains
The IRS treats a capital gain or loss as short-term when the identified Bitcoin was held for one year or less and long-term when it was held for more than one year. Count from the acquisition date of the units actually disposed of: the holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date.

When one transaction uses units from multiple lots, split the entry by lot if the lots have different acquisition dates, bases, or holding-period classifications. Do not use the date you transferred Bitcoin into an exchange as a substitute for the original acquisition date unless that transfer was itself an acquisition.
How fees affect the calculation
Costs paid to another party to effect a purchase, sale, or disposition can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. Acquisition costs generally increase basis; costs allocable to a disposition generally reduce the amount realized under the IRS digital-asset FAQ. Apply the treatment consistently to the transaction shown in your records.
A fee for moving Bitcoin between your own wallets or accounts is not treated as a digital-asset transaction cost under the FAQ merely because Bitcoin was moved. However, if Bitcoin is used to pay a transfer service, the units used for that payment are disposed of and require their own gain-or-loss calculation.

Worked examples
Cash sale
You identify units with an adjusted basis of $8,000. You sell them for $10,080 and pay an $80 selling fee that is allocable to the sale. The amount realized is $10,000. The gain is $10,000 minus $8,000, or $2,000. The holding period of those identified units determines whether the gain is short-term or long-term.
Crypto-to-crypto exchange
You exchange Bitcoin for another digital asset. The absence of dollars does not eliminate the disposition. Record the U.S.-dollar fair market value of the asset received at the exchange time, subtract any allocable transaction cost, and compare that amount with the basis of the Bitcoin units identified as exchanged.
Purchase of goods
You spend Bitcoin whose basis is $900 to acquire goods worth $1,200. If no allocable cost changes the amount realized, the disposition produces a $300 gain. The purchase also creates a separate record for the goods acquired; keep the invoice and the Bitcoin transaction details together.

Bitcoin received for services and later sold
You receive Bitcoin for independent-contractor services. The receipt is handled under the applicable income and business rules, not reported only as a capital gain. When you later sell the Bitcoin, use the applicable basis established at receipt and calculate a separate capital gain or loss from the sale proceeds.

| Situation | Typical federal reporting route |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin held as a capital asset and sold, exchanged, or spent | Form 8949 for each reportable disposition, with totals summarized on Schedule D. |
| Bitcoin received as employee compensation | Wage reporting and the forms required for the employment relationship; a later sale is reported separately. |
| Bitcoin received for independent-contractor work or a business | Applicable Schedule C or other business-income reporting, followed by a separate disposition calculation when units are sold or spent. |
| Mining, staking, or another income source | The form appropriate to that income under the current IRS instructions; later dispositions are separate transactions. |
Use the Form 8949 and Schedule D instructions for the tax year you are filing. Form 8949 instructions explain how to reconcile information returns and reported basis, so compare any broker statement with your own lot records instead of assuming the statement contains every required adjustment.
Records to retain
The IRS requires records sufficient to establish the positions taken on your federal return. Keep an export or other durable copy rather than relying on a platform’s current dashboard.
- Date and time of every acquisition, disposition, transfer, and income receipt.
- Asset type and quantity, including the units used for a fee or purchase.
- U.S.-dollar fair market value and the pricing source or statement used.
- Original and adjusted basis, acquisition costs, and disposition costs.
- Wallet address or custodial account for each lot.
- Lot-identification instructions, broker confirmations, and evidence of timely delivery where applicable.
- Sale proceeds, property or services received, and invoices for purchases.
- Copies of Forms 8949, Schedule D, income forms, and supporting calculations.
Reconcile wallet and exchange histories before filing. A missing acquisition record can prevent you from substantiating basis or holding period; do not silently replace unknown basis with a convenient average or assume every unidentified unit follows a universal FIFO rule.

Ignoring fees or assigning them twice
Classify each fee according to what it paid for. Include an allowable acquisition cost in basis or apply an allocable disposition cost to amount realized, but do not deduct the same fee in two places.
Treating income receipts as capital gains
Wages, contractor payments, mining, staking, and other receipts can require ordinary-income or business reporting before any later sale. Keep the receipt and the later disposition as separate records.
Using the wrong holding period
The one-year test follows the identified units, not the account opening date or the date you moved Bitcoin to an exchange. Start counting the day after acquisition.

A practical filing workflow
- Export transaction histories from every exchange, broker, wallet, payment service, and mining or staking source.
- Normalize timestamps, quantities, and U.S.-dollar values while preserving the original files.
- Separate taxable dispositions from own-account transfers and flag fees paid in Bitcoin.
- Build lot records with basis, wallet or account, acquisition date, and identification evidence.
- Calculate each disposition and split transactions when lots have different holding periods.
- Classify income receipts separately from capital-asset sales.
- Reconcile totals to broker information returns and bank or wallet balances.
- Complete Form 8949, Schedule D, and any income or business forms required for the source of Bitcoin.
- Retain the calculations and source records with the filed return.
Large transaction histories, missing lots, inherited or gifted Bitcoin, business activity, and mixed personal and business use can make the identification and reporting analysis difficult. In those situations, a qualified tax professional who works with digital assets can review the records and the tax-year instructions before filing.

The IRS digital-asset FAQ set has newer guidance than the legacy virtual-currency FAQ. For transactions completed in 2025 and later, consult the current IRS digital-assets and basis-identification guidance, Revenue Procedure 2024-28 where its safe harbor applies, and the Form 8949 instructions for the tax year being filed. Rules and forms can change, so preserve the version and date of the instructions used for your return.
