To calculate what you actually earned on Wipro, use total return rather than the share-price change alone: restate your share count for every split or bonus issue, add dividends received (or model their reinvestment), then compare the resulting value with your original investment. State the dates, instrument, currency, price source, fees and tax treatment, because Wipro equity on NSE/BSE and its NYSE-traded ADS are different calculations.
Decide which Wipro return you need
A price return measures only the change in quoted share value. A total return also counts cash distributions. Corporate actions such as splits and bonus issues alter the number of shares and the quoted price per share; by themselves they do not put cash in your account.

Write the definition at the top of your worksheet. A result without a start date, end date, price source, corporate-action treatment, dividend treatment and instrument cannot be reproduced or meaningfully compared.
Confirm the security, exchange and currency
Wipro’s investor FAQ identifies the Indian equity as NSE symbol WIPRO, BSE code 507685, ISIN INE075A01022, and the New York Stock Exchange American depositary share (ADS) as WIT. Confirm which one you own before importing prices.

- NSE/BSE equity: calculate in Indian rupees and use the share count and dividend per Indian equity share.
- NYSE ADS: calculate in U.S. dollars using ADS prices, the applicable ADS-to-equity ratio and dollar cash distributions. Include exchange-rate movements if you want an investor-level return from an INR asset translated into USD.
Never mix an INR close for WIPRO with a USD close for WIT. Even when both represent an interest in Wipro, their quoted prices, trading calendars, currencies and distribution records are not interchangeable.
Collect an event-by-event ledger
Start with your broker contract note or transaction record. Record the purchase date, quantity, execution price and any commission, stamp duty, taxes or other costs that your chosen return definition includes. Then reconstruct every corporate action and dividend between the purchase and valuation dates.
Wipro’s investor FAQ directs investors to the current annual report for both bonus/split history and dividend history. Use the annual report and the relevant exchange or company filing to verify the ratio, ex-date, record date, payment date and eligibility rules for your interval.

Do not infer eligibility merely from a purchase date. A trade must settle under the applicable market rules, and the official filing controls which holders receive a distribution.
Restate shares after splits and bonus issues
Apply events in chronological order. If an event multiplies holdings by a factor r, calculate new shares = eligible old shares × r. The aggregate cost basis stays the same immediately after the event, so the per-share basis becomes old aggregate basis ÷ new share count.
Wipro’s historical five-for-one split
A Wipro 2023 buyback filing describes historically issued ₹10-face-value shares as subsequently adjusted into ₹2-face-value shares on the October 14, 1999 record date. The face-value conversion implies five post-split shares for each pre-split share. It does not mean the investor received five times the economic value: the quoted price is adjusted inversely.
For example, 12 pre-split shares become 60 shares. If the aggregate basis was ₹9,600, the basis becomes ₹160 per post-split share, while the aggregate basis remains ₹9,600 before other accounting adjustments.

Wipro reported a 1:1 bonus issue in the second quarter of fiscal 2025. For an eligible holder, the factor is two: new shares = old shares × 2. A holder of 100 eligible shares would therefore hold 200 after the bonus is credited. The per-share basis is halved, but the bonus itself is not a cash profit.

Use the complete filing to confirm the announcement, ex-bonus and record dates before applying this event to a particular purchase interval. If you bought after the ex-date, the price already reflects the event and you should not add bonus shares a second time.
Multiple events
For several events, multiply the factors in date order. A holding of 10 shares followed by a 5:1 split and then a 1:1 bonus becomes 10 × 5 × 2 = 100 shares. Keep a separate row for each event so that the eligible share count and basis can be audited.
Add dividends using the eligible share count
For a cash dividend, calculate gross dividend = eligible shares on the relevant record date × dividend per share. Use the share count after all earlier splits or bonus issues that have taken effect, and verify the record-date rule in the official filing.

This is a company-reported fiscal-year figure, not a guaranteed future payment or a dividend yield. Wipro also reported a ₹1 cash dividend per equity share for the year ended March 31, 2024, reported in 2025 materials. Keep each fiscal-year or declared dividend as its own ledger entry rather than substituting the latest figure for the entire historical period.
Wipro states that it does not currently offer a dividend reinvestment program or dividend stock-purchase plan. A normal cash-dividend calculation therefore credits the distribution as cash unless you separately model purchases made with it.
Calculate the return
Cash-dividend holding-period return
At the valuation date, calculate ending share value from the properly restated share count and the applicable closing price. Then use:
cash-dividend total return = (ending share value + cash dividends received − original investment) ÷ original investment × 100%

Price return
To isolate price movement, omit dividends:
price return = (ending share value − original investment) ÷ original investment × 100%
Splits and bonuses must still be reflected in the ending share count or in a consistently adjusted price series. Otherwise the calculation creates a fictitious gain or loss.
Reinvested-dividend return
For each payment, divide the cash dividend by the selected reinvestment price and add the resulting shares. State the convention: payment-date close, next trading-day close, average price or another rule. Continue this process chronologically and value every resulting fraction of a share at the end date. Because Wipro has no company reinvestment plan, this is a hypothetical investor calculation and may differ from an actual broker’s execution, taxes or fractional-share handling.
Annualized return
For a period of n years, use a consistently defined ending total value:
annualized return = (ending total value ÷ original investment)^(1 ÷ n) − 1
Use the exact elapsed time when the period is not a whole number of years, and label the result as annualized. Do not compare an annualized rate with a cumulative percentage without saying which is which.
Worked example with hypothetical prices
The following numbers illustrate the mechanics; they are not historical Wipro prices.

With the dividend retained as cash, total value is ₹52,000 + ₹200 = ₹52,200. The holding-period total return is (₹52,200 − ₹40,000) ÷ ₹40,000 × 100 = 30.5%. The price-only return is (₹52,000 − ₹40,000) ÷ ₹40,000 × 100 = 30%. The 1:1 bonus increased the units held but did not add cash; the ₹200 distribution is what separates the two results in this example.

If the ₹200 were hypothetically reinvested at ₹260, it would buy 0.769230… additional shares. The ending value would then be based on 200.769230… shares, subject to the stated price and fractional-share convention. A real calculation must use the actual payment date, eligible count and reinvestment price.
Raw prices, split-adjusted prices and adjusted close
You can either reconstruct the share count and cash flows yourself or use a historical series that has already been adjusted. Do not combine both methods without checking the methodology.
Yahoo Finance defines adjusted close as adjusted for splits and dividend and/or capital-gain distributions. Such a series can be convenient for a reinvested-distribution-style comparison, but the vendor’s exact assumptions and adjustment dates must be understood. If you use a dividend-adjusted series, do not add the same historical cash dividends again; that double-counts distributions.

- Raw close: use with your own chronological split, bonus and dividend ledger.
- Split-adjusted close: useful for price comparisons when the adjustment covers every relevant split, but it may not include dividends.
- Dividend-adjusted close: potentially useful for a total-return proxy, subject to the provider’s reinvestment and timing methodology.
Record the vendor, download date and adjustment setting in your worksheet so another reader can reproduce the result.
Indian equity and NYSE ADS require separate calculations
An Indian-equity calculation normally remains in INR and uses WIPRO or 507685 prices and the Indian equity dividend record. An ADS calculation remains in USD and must use WIT prices, the ADS conversion terms and the distribution actually paid to ADS holders.
For a USD investor measuring the economic result of an Indian-equity exposure, you may also need an exchange-rate series. Keep the equity return and currency translation visible as separate components before combining them. A rupee return and a dollar return can differ even when the underlying share performance is identical.

Gross return is not the same as money kept after costs. Decide whether to include:
- brokerage, exchange fees, stamp duty and transaction taxes;
- withholding tax or other tax on dividends;
- capital-gains tax on a sale;
- currency-conversion charges for an ADS or cross-border investor; and
- inflation, if you want a real rather than nominal return.
Apply each item at the date it occurs when possible. Tax results depend on the investor’s residence, account type, holding period and applicable law; a generic worksheet cannot determine personal tax liability. If you do not have reliable tax inputs, publish the result as gross or pre-tax and state that limitation.

Build the calculation in a spreadsheet
A row-per-event layout prevents most errors. Suggested columns are:
- Date: event, ex-date, record date or payment date, with the convention identified.
- Event: purchase, split, bonus or dividend.
- Factor: 1 for ordinary rows, 5 for a five-for-one split, 2 for a 1:1 bonus.
- Shares before and after: apply the factor only to shares eligible for that event.
- Dividend per share: enter zero except on a dividend row.
- Cash dividend: eligible shares multiplied by dividend per share.
- Price: raw or adjusted, but never mix the two without documenting it.
- Fees and taxes: enter separately rather than hiding them in the price.
- Notes: filing reference, record-date qualification and any ADS or fractional-share rule.
For a cash-dividend model, sum all dividend rows and calculate ending shares multiplied by the ending price. For a reinvestment model, add dividend cash divided by the stated reinvestment price to the next row’s share count. Keep original invested cash in a separate cell so later corporate actions cannot accidentally change it.
Common errors and how to fix them
Counting a bonus as profit
Receiving twice as many shares in a 1:1 bonus does not by itself double wealth. Restate both units and per-share basis, then value the entire position at a date-specific price.

Using the wrong dividend share count
A dividend is based on the eligible record-date holding, not necessarily today’s balance or the balance before an earlier corporate action. Check the filing and use the post-action count where applicable.
Adding dividends to an adjusted series
If the downloaded close already incorporates distributions, adding the same cash payments again overstates total return. Use either the adjusted series under its documented convention or a raw-price-plus-ledger method.
Ignoring the instrument
WIPRO and WIT are not interchangeable tickers. Rebuild the calculation in the security’s own currency and terms before comparing results.
Comparing unlike periods
A cumulative return over ten years and an annualized return over three years answer different questions. Label both the period and the compounding convention.
Assuming the latest dividend continues
The ₹11 per-share figure for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 is historical company reporting, not a promise of future distributions. Future calculations must use the dividends actually declared for the chosen interval.
Final verification checklist
- Have you named the start and end dates?
- Did you identify WIPRO/507685 Indian equity or WIT ADS and keep currency consistent?
- Did you use Wipro annual reports and filings to verify every split, bonus, record date and dividend?
- Were corporate actions applied chronologically to the eligible share count?
- Did you preserve aggregate cost basis while adjusting per-share basis?
- Are dividends treated as cash or reinvested under an explicit convention?
- Are raw and adjusted prices clearly distinguished?
- Are fees, taxes, inflation and currency effects either included or explicitly excluded?
- Is the result labeled cumulative or annualized and gross or after-cost?
Bottom line
The defensible Wipro return is an auditable cash-flow calculation, not a single headline percentage. Start with the correct security and dates, reconstruct each corporate action, add only the dividends that your eligible shares received (or model their reinvestment once), and state every price, currency and cost convention. That produces a result another investor can check and prevents splits, bonus shares or adjusted prices from being mistaken for extra cash profit.
