The most dependable phone method is to turn the percentage into a decimal and multiply. For p% of A, enter A × (p ÷ 100); for an 18% calculation on 225, enter 225 × 0.18 to get 40.5. The same approach handles tips, sale prices, and bill splitting even when your calculator’s % key behaves differently from another device.
Use your built-in Calculator for exact cents, Siri on supported iPhones for a voice query, or mental benchmarks such as 10% and 5% when an estimate is enough. The sections below show the formulas, keystrokes, examples, and checks so you can get a result quickly without relying on a particular calculator layout.
The three formulas worth memorizing
Find a percentage of a number
Amount = base × percentage rate
Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100. Thus, 18% becomes 0.18:

This decimal-rate method works in any calculator that accepts multiplication and decimals. It avoids uncertainty about what a calculator’s percent key does when you press it after addition, subtraction, or multiplication.

Apply a discount
First calculate the savings:
savings = original price × discount rate
Then subtract the savings:
sale price = original price − savings
There is also a one-step form:
sale price = original price × (1 − discount rate)
A 25% discount leaves 75% of the original price, so multiply by 0.75.
Calculate a tip and split the bill
For a tip:
tip = bill × tip rate
total = bill + tip
To divide the total equally:
each person pays = total ÷ number of people
Whether you calculate a tip on a pre-tax or post-tax bill, and what rate you choose, depends on your location and preference. The arithmetic is universal; the tipping convention is not.

A Google Play listing for an app called QuickCalc advertises percentage, discount, tip, and bill-splitting functions. That listing is an example of the app category, not a comparative test or endorsement. For occasional calculations, the calculator already on your phone is usually the fewer-step option.
Use your phone’s calculator without depending on the percent key
- Open the built-in Calculator.
- Type the base amount, such as
225. - Multiply by the decimal form of the rate, such as
× 0.18. - Press equals and check that the displayed expression and result match what you intended.
For a discount, use parentheses if your calculator supports them: 80 × (1 − 0.25). If it does not, calculate 80 × 0.25 = 20, then enter 80 − 20 = 60. Showing the savings separately is often easier to audit at a checkout.

For a tip, enter the bill multiplied by the decimal tip rate, then add the bill. For a split, divide the final total, not merely the pre-tip bill, by the number of diners.
iPhone: Calculator and Siri
Ask Siri a percentage question
Apple’s iPhone Calculator guide gives this spoken example: “Siri: Ask Siri something like, ‘What’s 18 percent of 225?’” On an iPhone with Siri enabled, say that question and read the result shown or spoken back. This is useful when you cannot comfortably tap the screen, but confirm the number before using it for a payment.

Understand Apple’s documented percent behavior
Apple’s guide documents percentage addition in Calculator. Its example is 100 + 15% = 115; repeating the operation with 150 produces 172.5. Those are documented Apple behaviors, not a promise that every calculator application interprets % the same way. If the result looks unexpected, use the explicit decimal expression instead: 100 × 0.15 for the percentage amount, or 100 × 1.15 for a 15% increase.
Android and other phones: use explicit arithmetic
Android calculator interfaces differ among manufacturers, phone models, operating-system versions, and calculator apps. There is no single button sequence that can safely be called the universal Android workflow. Enter the formula with a decimal rate and inspect the full displayed expression whenever possible.
For example, calculate a 25% reduction from $80 as 80 × 0.75, or calculate the savings as 80 × 0.25 and subtract it. If your calculator has a percent key, try a small known example first, such as 10% of 100, and verify that the displayed result is 10 before using it for a larger transaction.

Worked example: find 18% of 225
Exact calculator route
Convert 18% to 0.18 and multiply:
225 × 0.18 = 40.5
The answer is 40.5 in the same currency or units as the base number.

Break 18% into familiar pieces:
- 10% of 225 is 22.5.
- 5% is half of 10%, or 11.25.
- 3% is 6.75.
- Add them:
22.5 + 11.25 + 6.75 = 40.5.

Calculate a tip, total, and equal shares
$48 bill with an illustrative 20% tip
For a 20% tip, find 10% first: 10% of $48 is $4.80. Double it for 20%, giving a tip of $9.60. Add that to the bill:
$48.00 + $9.60 = $57.60
If four people split the total equally:
$57.60 ÷ 4 = $14.40 per person
This example demonstrates the calculation, not a universal tipping recommendation. Check whether your local practice or your own preference uses the pre-tax or post-tax amount, and decide how to handle any rounding at the table.
Other common tip rates
Use the decimal formula when the rate is not a convenient mental benchmark. For a 17% tip on a $62 bill, enter 62 × 0.17 = 10.54, then 62 + 10.54 = 72.54. If three people share it, enter 72.54 ÷ 3 = 24.18. Keep the unrounded values until the final currency step so intermediate rounding does not change the split.

Calculate a discount and the final sale price
$80 item at 25% off
Find the savings:
$80 × 0.25 = $20
Subtract the savings:
$80 − $20 = $60
Or enter the one-step calculation:
$80 × 0.75 = $60
Displaying both the savings and sale price helps you catch a common mistake: reporting the discount amount as if it were the amount you pay.
Percentage increases
For an increase, add the rate rather than subtracting it. A 15% increase means multiplying by 1.15. A $100 amount becomes 100 × 1.15 = 115. The same multiplier logic works for a decrease: a 15% decrease uses 0.85.
Successive discounts are multiplicative
Apply each discount to the price that remains after the previous discount. With 20% off followed by another 10% off:
original × 0.80 × 0.90 = original × 0.72
You pay 72% of the original price, so the total reduction is 28%, not 30%. On a $100 item, the first discount leaves $80 and the second removes $8, leaving $72.

- 10%: move the decimal one place left, or divide by 10.
- 5%: take half of the 10% amount.
- 15%: add 10% and 5%.
- 20%: double the 10% amount.
For a $36 meal, 10% is $3.60, 5% is $1.80, 15% is $5.40, and 20% is $7.20. For rates such as 18%, combine benchmarks or switch to the decimal formula. You can also estimate with familiar fractions or decimals, a technique described in educational percentage resources, but label the result as an estimate when the benchmark is not exact.
Rounding, cents, and sanity checks
Round at the end
Keep decimal precision through the percentage and addition steps, then round the final money amount according to the currency and the rules you are following. Rounding the tip before adding it can create a one-cent difference for each person in a split.
Check the direction
- A percentage of a positive amount should be smaller than the base when the rate is below 100%.
- A discount price must be lower than the original price.
- A tip-inclusive total must be higher than the bill.
- A second discount must act on the reduced price, not the original price.
Check with a benchmark
For 18% of 225, 10% is 22.5 and 20% is 45, so 40.5 is in the expected range. For a 25% discount on $80, the savings should be one quarter of $80, or $20. These quick bounds catch misplaced decimal points such as using 1.8 instead of 0.18.
Troubleshoot an unexpected result
The result is 100 times too large or too small
You probably entered 18 instead of 0.18, or treated 0.18 as 18%. Divide the whole-number percentage by 100 before multiplying.
The calculator’s percent key gives a surprising answer
Do not assume that the key follows the behavior of another phone. Clear the expression and use multiplication by a decimal rate. For a sale price, use original × (1 − rate), or calculate savings and subtract.
The discount looks right but the amount paid is wrong
Check whether you stopped after calculating the savings. A 25% discount on $80 saves $20, but the sale price is $60.
The split does not add back to the total
Divide the final, tip-inclusive total and inspect the remainder. Some totals cannot be divided into identical cents; assign the extra cent according to the arrangement agreed by the group rather than silently changing the tip or discount.

Voice input misunderstood the question
Rephrase it with the base and rate explicitly, such as “calculate 225 times 0.18,” then compare the answer with the decimal formula in Calculator. Voice assistants can interpret natural-language questions differently from a typed expression, so verify before paying.
