To estimate the cash needed for an agricultural futures position, first calculate the mark-to-market gain or loss: price change in the contract’s quoted units multiplied by contract quantity and number of contracts, with the sign adjusted for a long or short position. Add that result to account equity, then compare equity with the contract’s current maintenance margin. If equity is below maintenance, the CME framework calls for restoring the account to initial margin, although the exact amount due, deadline, funding methods and liquidation terms come from your clearing broker.

What futures margin means

Futures margin is collateral, commonly called a performance bond, that supports your obligations under a futures contract. It is not a purchase deposit for the full value of the grain, oilseed or other commodity, and it is not a fee that buys protection from losses. Because the contract is marked to market as prices move, your account can gain or lose cash every trading day while the position remains open.

The amount posted is only one part of the risk. A contract’s notional exposure can be much larger than its margin, and an adverse move can consume the entire deposit and create an additional amount due. Never treat the margin balance as a cap on potential loss or as proof that the position is affordable.

Term Meaning How it is used
Initial margin Collateral required to establish the position. Use it as the opening threshold and, under the CME general framework, the level to which a margin call restores equity.
Maintenance margin Minimum equity level for keeping the position open. When mark-to-market losses push equity below this level, the account enters the call condition.
Variation gain or loss The mark-to-market change caused by a price move. Add gains to equity and subtract losses before comparing with maintenance.
House margin An additional requirement imposed by a broker above the exchange schedule, if applicable. Use the broker’s customer requirement, not an exchange figure alone, when deciding how much cash to keep available.

“Performance bond requirements vary by product and market volatility.”

Collect the exact inputs before doing the arithmetic

A margin calculation is meaningful only when every input refers to the same product, contract month, timestamp and account category. Before opening a position or assessing a call, record the following:

  • Exchange and contract: identify the exact agricultural futures product rather than relying on a generic label such as corn or soybean.
  • Delivery month: exchange schedules can show different requirements by contract month.
  • Quote units: note whether the price is quoted per metric ton, bushel, pound, hundredweight or another unit. Convert the price move and quantity to compatible units.
  • Contract quantity: record the quantity represented by one contract. If the source states a total quantity for several contracts, do not mistakenly treat it as the quantity of each contract.
  • Number and direction: write the number of contracts and whether the position is long or short.
  • Current initial and maintenance margins: obtain the live exchange schedule and the broker’s customer schedule for the same date.
  • Account classification: CME educational material distinguishes HRP and Non-HRP initial rates. Use the category that actually applies to your account.
  • Broker terms: confirm house add-ons, when the account is marked, how notices are delivered, the call deadline, acceptable deposit methods and the broker’s right to liquidate.

Exchange requirements are time-sensitive. CME says requirements change with product conditions and market volatility, and publishes changes through advisories and historical margin files. A notice in the agricultural material was effective after the close of business on August 14, 2026; that is a dated example of a rate notice, not a universal rate for every agricultural contract. A CME corn margin page displayed an update date of October 6, 2026 and values by delivery month, but those displayed values should be rechecked on the live official page before use.

  • ΔP = the price change in the contract’s quoted units;
  • Q = the quantity represented by one contract;
  • N = the number of contracts.

For a long position, the result is:

P/L = (new price − entry price) × Q × N

For a short position, reverse the price difference:

P/L = (entry price − new price) × Q × N

A positive result is a gain and a negative result is a loss. If you prefer to work only with the adverse move, calculate the loss as |ΔP| × Q × N, then subtract it from equity. The direction must still be stated: a downward move is adverse to a long, while an upward move is adverse to a short.

Update account equity

Start with the account equity immediately before the move. Add a gain or subtract a loss:

new equity = prior equity + mark-to-market P/L + applicable cash credits or debits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a simple estimate with no other cash activity, the formula reduces to prior equity plus the calculated P/L. Compare the resulting equity with maintenance margin. If equity is below maintenance, the position is below the exchange-level maintenance threshold. The broker’s notice may also reflect house requirements, other positions, interest, fees or unsettled transfers.

CME soybean-oil spread illustration

CME’s agricultural example uses a short soybean-oil spread. It states that 10 contracts represent 100 metric tons in total. The spread moves from −$300 per metric ton to −$230 per metric ton. For the short position, that narrowing is adverse by $70 per metric ton.

Item Calculation or stated value
Adverse spread move $70 per metric ton
Total quantity represented 100 metric tons for 10 contracts
Variation loss $70 × 100 metric tons = $7,000
Stated initial margin $9,350
Stated maintenance margin $8,500
Balance after the loss $9,350 − $7,000 = $2,350
Amount shown in the article to reach $8,500 $8,500 − $2,350 = $6,150

This is a worked scenario, not a current agricultural margin schedule. It demonstrates the variation-loss arithmetic and shows how far equity can fall after one adverse move. The example’s table shows $6,150 to restore the balance to its stated maintenance figure. CME’s separate general framework says that when equity falls below maintenance, a call must bring the account up to initial margin; in the same numerical setup, restoring to $9,350 from $2,350 would require $7,000. Your broker’s notice and agreement determine which target, timing and calculation apply to your account.

How a margin call works

A call begins when mark-to-market losses reduce equity below the applicable maintenance threshold. The process is operational rather than optional: the broker can require funds even if you expect the market to reverse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the trigger. Compare current equity with the maintenance requirement for the exact contract, month, position and account category.
  2. Read the notice. Record the amount requested, target balance, deadline, delivery channel and accepted payment methods. Do not assume a universal response window; the reviewed CME material does not establish one.
  3. Recalculate independently. Recheck price direction, quote units, total quantity, number of contracts and any other cash movements. A unit error can multiply the apparent call.
  4. Fund or reduce risk. Deposit the required cash or other accepted collateral by the broker’s deadline, or ask whether closing part of the position is permitted. A partial liquidation changes both exposure and the future margin requirement.
  5. Confirm receipt. Obtain confirmation that the broker credited the funds before the deadline. A transfer initiated before the deadline may not count if the broker has not received or credited it.
  6. Plan for the next mark. Meeting one call does not prevent another. Recalculate available liquidity after the deposit and stress the remaining position against further adverse moves.

If the call is not met within the required timeframe, CME’s agricultural example says the broker may close the position. Liquidation can occur at an unfavorable price, and the account can still owe a deficit if losses exceed posted collateral. Do not wait for a margin call to discover that a bank transfer, wire cutoff or holiday schedule delays funding.

Why agricultural requirements change

There is no single corn, soybean or wheat margin number that remains valid across all dates and accounts. Exchange requirements respond to volatility and product-specific risk. Delivery months can carry different values, and the broker may add a house requirement based on its own risk policy.

Use the exchange’s current margin schedule and advisory service immediately before trading. Check the effective date, whether the figure is initial or maintenance, the delivery month, the customer risk category and whether the number applies to an outright contract, spread or portfolio. Historical files are useful for reconstructing past conditions but are not substitutes for a live quote.

Spreads, options and portfolios need a different treatment

Multiplying one outright price move by one contract quantity is a good first estimate for a simple position. It can be misleading for a calendar spread, intercommodity spread, option or portfolio containing offsets.

Position type What the simple calculation misses Better check
Outright futures Usually limited to the contract’s price move and quantity, but still subject to the correct month and quote units. Calculate long or short P/L, then apply current initial and maintenance requirements.
Calendar spread The two months may not move together; the changing difference creates basis risk. Calculate each leg’s P/L and use the exchange and broker spread treatment.
Intercommodity spread Related commodities can diverge, so an assumed offset may fail. Use the specified leg ratios, current spread requirement and stress the residual risk.
Options on futures Premium, option value, volatility and time effects alter the exposure. Use the applicable options methodology rather than an outright multiplication.
Portfolio Offsets, scan risk and correlations affect required collateral. Review the broker’s SPAN-based or other portfolio margin output.

CME points to SPAN for portfolio and options margin calculations. It also notes that futures months do not correlate exactly. An apparent hedge therefore does not guarantee that a margin call cannot occur.

Compare two agricultural contracts correctly

When deciding between products, compare figures captured at the same time and for the same customer category. A lower posted margin does not automatically mean lower risk.

Comparison question Why it matters
What are the current initial and maintenance requirements? The opening cash and call threshold differ by product, month and date.
What quantity does one contract represent? A small quoted move can produce a large dollar change when multiplied by the contract quantity.
What are the quote and conversion units? Mixing cents, dollars, bushels, pounds or metric tons produces a wrong P/L.
How volatile is the market and what is the latest advisory? Exchange requirements can rise when volatility rises.
Is the position outright, spread or portfolio-based? Offsets and basis risk may change the requirement and the result of an adverse move.
Does the broker add house margin? Your customer requirement can exceed the exchange schedule.
What are the call deadline, funding method and liquidation terms? Operational rules determine how quickly you must act and what happens if funds are late.

A practical workflow before opening a position

  1. Write the contract specification. Include exchange, product, delivery month, quote unit and contract quantity.
  2. Capture live requirements. Save the initial and maintenance figures and their effective date. Note whether the schedule distinguishes HRP and Non-HRP accounts.
  3. Record broker-specific terms. Ask for any house margin, intraday changes, call cutoff, accepted collateral and liquidation authority in writing.
  4. Calculate one adverse move. Use the long or short formula and show every unit conversion.
  5. Calculate account equity after that move. Subtract the loss from available equity, not merely from the amount originally posted.
  6. Stress several moves. Test progressively larger adverse changes and include the possibility that margin requirements rise while the position loses.
  7. Set a liquidity reserve. Keep funds beyond the minimum margin so a normal adverse move does not force an immediate liquidation.
  8. Define an exit rule. Decide in advance when to reduce or close the position; a margin call is a collateral event, not a trading strategy.

Common calculation and risk-management mistakes

Using notional value as the margin

Notional value describes the economic exposure of the contract. Margin is collateral against that exposure. They answer different questions, so do not substitute one for the other.

Ignoring the position direction

The same price move benefits a short and harms a long, or vice versa. Write the direction beside the formula before entering numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiplying by the wrong quantity

Confirm whether a source gives quantity per contract or total quantity for a group of contracts. The CME illustration gives 100 metric tons for 10 contracts in total; treating 100 metric tons as the quantity of each contract would overstate the loss by a factor of ten.

Mixing quote units

Keep the price move and quantity in compatible units. A figure quoted in cents must be converted consistently before it is multiplied by a quantity expressed in pounds, bushels or metric tons.

Using an old margin schedule

Exchange requirements can change after an advisory and can differ by delivery month. Date every saved figure and verify it again immediately before trading.

Assuming the exchange figure is the customer requirement

A broker can add house margin or apply different intraday controls. The amount displayed in your account and your broker agreement govern the funds you must provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing maintenance with the call target

Maintenance is the trigger threshold. Under CME’s stated general framework, the call restores equity to initial margin; an individual broker notice may present a different operational target or include other debits. Read the notice rather than relying on a generic percentage.

Assuming a deadline or automatic cure period

No universal broker response window is established by the reviewed material. Confirm the exact deadline and remember that transfer processing time can matter.

Believing a spread is risk-free

Calendar months and related commodities can diverge. Basis risk can create a loss even when the position was designed to offset two legs.

Treating a margin call as a maximum loss

A call requests more collateral; it does not limit the market loss. Futures losses can exceed the original margin and leave a debit after liquidation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this worksheet for each position

  1. Write the product and delivery month: ________________.
  2. Write the quote unit and quantity per contract: ________________.
  3. Enter contract count and direction: N = ____; long/short = ____.
  4. Record entry price and current price in the same units: entry = ____; current = ____.
  5. Calculate P/L: long: (current − entry) × Q × N or short: (entry − current) × Q × N.
  6. Update equity: prior equity + P/L = ____.
  7. Enter current maintenance and initial margins, each with its effective date: M = ____; I = ____.
  8. If equity is below maintenance, read the broker notice and calculate the amount needed to its stated target by its stated deadline. Do not replace that notice with an assumed universal rule.

What to verify with the broker

  • Which exchange margin schedule and delivery-month row applies to your account.
  • Whether your account is classified as HRP, Non-HRP or another category.
  • Any house margin above the exchange requirement.
  • When mark-to-market debits and credits post to equity.
  • How the broker sends margin-call notices and whether verbal notice is required in addition to electronic notice.
  • The exact deadline, time zone and accepted deposit methods.
  • Whether the broker may liquidate without waiting for your instructions and how liquidation costs are charged.
  • How spread, option and portfolio offsets are calculated, including the SPAN or other methodology used.

The safest calculation is therefore a dated, contract-specific worksheet tied to the broker’s live requirements. Re-run it whenever the contract month, position size, market price, volatility regime or account classification changes.
