To calculate a Pakistan-listed share’s trailing dividend yield, add the cash dividends paid per share during the last 12 months, divide that total by the share price on a stated date, and multiply by 100. A meaningful comparison then checks payout history, earnings, valuation, price movements, liquidity, taxes, and your own income or growth objective—not yield alone.
What dividend yield tells you
Dividend yield expresses a share’s recent cash distribution as a percentage of its market price. It answers a narrow question: how much cash dividend did one share pay over a defined period compared with what one share costs at the chosen price date?
For a historical comparison, use the trailing 12-month (TTM) measure:
Trailing dividend yield (%) = (cash dividends per share paid in the last 12 months ÷ share price) × 100

For example, suppose a company paid Rs 12 per share in cash dividends whose payment dates fell within the selected 12-month period, and the share trades at Rs 240 on your price date. The calculation is (12 ÷ 240) × 100 = 5%. This is a hypothetical arithmetic example, not a claim about any particular company.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) describes yield as a comparison between the cash dividend and share price in its Guide to Investors—Stock Investment Basic Concepts. The percentage is useful for putting shares with different prices on a common scale, but it is not a promise of the next dividend.
How to calculate a trailing dividend yield step by step
1. Fix the share and the price date
Write down the company, ticker, exchange listing and the exact date and time basis of the price you will use. A yield calculated with today’s price can differ materially from one calculated with last month’s price, even when the dividend history is unchanged. When comparing several Pakistan stocks, use the same price date and the same convention—such as the official closing price—for every share.

Record whether the displayed price is adjusted or unadjusted for a corporate action if your data source provides that distinction. The essential requirement is consistency: the dividend amount and the denominator must describe the same share and a clearly identified market date.
2. Collect every cash dividend paid in the period
Define the trailing window as the 12 months ending on your selected calculation date, then list each cash dividend per share whose payment date falls inside that window. A company can pay an interim dividend and a final dividend, or make several payments during a year; do not assume that one announcement or one payment represents a full annual distribution.
Use the cash amount per share actually declared for the relevant payment. Keep a record of the payment date and amount so that another reader can reproduce your total. Exclude amounts that are not cash dividends when the objective is cash yield. If a payment is denominated in rupees, keep the share price in rupees; mixing currencies or per-share and total-company figures produces a meaningless percentage.
3. Add the per-share cash amounts
Sum the individual cash dividends. If the payments were Rs 4, Rs 3 and Rs 5 per share during the window, the TTM cash-dividend total is Rs 12 per share. If no qualifying cash payment occurred, the trailing cash yield is 0% for that period, even if management has announced a possible future payout.

4. Divide by the price and convert to a percentage
Divide the 12-month per-share total by the chosen share price, then multiply by 100. Keep the unrounded result in your worksheet and round only the displayed percentage—for example, 4.96% rather than rounding each dividend before adding it.
Label the result trailing 12-month dividend yield. That label tells readers that the numerator is a record of past payments and that the denominator is the price on a specified date. PSX’s Dividend 20 methodology also uses trailing 12-month dividend yield when ranking eligible companies; the measure remains historical even when it appears in an index screen.
Worked calculation template
| Item | Illustrative value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cash dividend 1 | Rs 4 per share | Include if its payment date is inside the 12-month window |
| Cash dividend 2 | Rs 3 per share | Include on the same payment-date rule |
| Cash dividend 3 | Rs 5 per share | Include on the same payment-date rule |
| TTM cash dividends | Rs 12 per share | Add all qualifying payments |
| Price on calculation date | Rs 240 | Use the stated market price date |
| TTM yield | 5% | (Rs 12 ÷ Rs 240) × 100 |
Trailing yield versus forward yield
Trailing yield is reproducible because both the dividend payments and the price date can be checked. A forward yield is an estimate based on a dividend that has been announced for a future payment or on an assumption about what the company may pay.
| Measure | Numerator | Best use | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing 12-month yield | Cash dividends per share paid during the prior 12 months | Compare recent distributions using a common historical period | Past payments do not guarantee the next payment; the percentage changes when the share price changes |
| Forward yield based on an announced payout | Announced future cash dividend per share | Estimate the income implied by a specific announcement | The payment may be conditional, delayed or changed; state the announcement date and assumption |
| Forward yield based on a projection | Your assumed future dividend per share | Scenario planning | It is an estimate, not an established PSX measure; disclose the payout assumption and do not present it as historical yield |
There is no single universal forward-yield convention established in the PSX material used here. If you calculate one, show the assumed dividend, price date, period and whether the assumption is an announced amount or your own projection. Do not combine a full-year projected dividend with an old price while calling the result current.

Build the comparison with matching dates and definitions first. A table that mixes one company’s current price with another company’s six-month-old price can rank shares by stale market data rather than by economics.
Start with a like-for-like yield table
For every company, record the calculation date, the price, each qualifying cash payment, the 12-month total and the resulting percentage. Use the same rounding rule. If a company has paid only once, show that fact rather than implying an annual pattern.
Check dividend history and payout behaviour
Look beyond the latest percentage. Ask whether the company has paid cash dividends consistently, whether payments are regular or occasional, and whether a large recent distribution is unusual. A high TTM yield created by one exceptional payment is a different proposition from a similar yield produced by a stable series of payments.

PSX’s Dividend 20 screen uses recent cash-dividend payments, a minimum payout-ratio condition across multiple financial years and additional eligibility tests. Its methodology is a way to define and screen a group of companies, not a forecast that every included company will maintain its past yield. Compare dividend yield with earnings per share (EPS) and the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). PSX identifies EPS and P/E as basic stock concepts in its investor guidance. A payout that is high relative to recent earnings may be harder to sustain than one supported by recurring profits, but one year of EPS is not a complete forecast. Review the company’s financial statements and announcements for the period that produced the dividend.
Do not treat a low yield as automatically bad. A company reinvesting profits may offer more potential for capital growth, while a mature company may distribute more cash. The relevant question is whether the payout fits your objective and the company’s financial capacity.
Put the price movement into context
Yield has price in its denominator. If the share price falls from Rs 300 to Rs 200 while the TTM dividend remains Rs 12, the mathematical yield rises from 4% to 6%. That increase may reflect a cheaper valuation, deteriorating business expectations, or both. Investigate the reason for a sharp price decline before treating the higher percentage as an opportunity.
Conversely, a rising price can reduce the yield without any dividend cut. Compare the current yield with the price trend and valuation rather than assuming that a lower percentage means the company reduced its cash distribution.
Compare sector and company fundamentals
PSX investor guidance points to company fundamentals, annual payouts, sector performance and market activity as factors in stock selection. Use those dimensions to explain differences between companies: a regulated business, cyclical producer and growth-oriented firm may have very different payout patterns even when their TTM yields are identical.
Check liquidity and tradability
The PSX screener displays average 30-day volume and free float alongside price, market capitalisation, P/E and yield. Thin trading can make an indicated price less useful for a large order and can increase the gap between a quoted price and the price at which you can actually trade. Include volume and free float in your comparison, especially when the investment amount is substantial relative to normal market activity.

Match the comparison to your objective and risk tolerance
PSX advises investors to decide whether they seek dividends, capital gains, or both, assess their risk tolerance and diversify. For an income objective, reliability and the ability to hold through a price decline may matter more than the highest displayed yield. For a total-return objective, a lower current yield can be acceptable if earnings and reinvestment support a credible growth case. Neither objective removes the need to diversify across suitable holdings.
Using PSX’s online data
Stock Screener
The PSX Stock Screener provides a dividend-yield filter and displays yield with price, market capitalisation, P/E, free float and average 30-day volume. Treat every displayed value as time-sensitive. Record the date you viewed the screen, the filters used and whether the value is labelled as a trailing measure in the interface.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the PSX screener and set the dividend-yield range relevant to your shortlist.
- Record the price date or retrieval date shown with the results.
- Export or copy the company name, price, yield, P/E, market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume.
- For each candidate, verify the underlying cash-payment history and recalculate the TTM figure using the same payment-date rule.
- Investigate announcements and financial statements before using any forward estimate.
The screener is a starting filter, not a substitute for checking the calculation. A live value can change with every market move, while a dividend total changes when a payment enters or leaves the 12-month window.
Dividend 20 methodology
The Dividend 20 methodology combines dividend-yield ranking with eligibility requirements concerning payment history, payout behaviour, listing history, trading activity and free-float conditions. This makes it useful for understanding how a formal screen narrows the PSX universe. It does not turn the index’s trailing yield into a guaranteed future return, and an eligible company can still face a dividend reduction.
Investor education and market context
PSX’s Financial Literacy Initiative and investor guide provide context on fundamentals, risk, diversification, taxes and trading costs. Use those materials alongside company disclosures rather than relying on a single screener column.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a high dividend yield can mislead
A falling share price can inflate the percentage
The denominator effect is the most common mathematical trap. A falling price raises the yield even when the dividend has not increased. Check price performance, earnings, debt and the reason for market concern before interpreting the result.
A past payment may not recur
Special or unusually large distributions can make the last 12 months look generous. Separate recurring payments from exceptional events in your notes, and do not use the exceptional amount in a forward estimate unless the company has clearly announced a comparable payout.

Payment timing can distort comparisons
Two companies with similar annual policies can show different TTM yields if one paid shortly before your window began and the other paid just inside it. The solution is not to change the rule for one company: use the same 12-month payment-date window for all, then inspect a longer dividend history to understand timing.
Yield ignores trading friction and risk
The percentage does not include brokerage commissions, taxes or the cost of entering and exiting a position. PSX notes that taxes and brokerage commissions affect returns and that commission rates vary by brokerage firm. A high gross yield in an illiquid share may not translate into the same realized result as the screen suggests.
Past distributions are not a guarantee
Dividend policy depends on profits, cash needs, board decisions, legal requirements and other company circumstances. A historical TTM calculation describes what happened; it cannot guarantee that the company will declare or pay the same amount next year.
Estimating income after tax and costs
Start with gross cash income
For a holding of N shares, multiply the per-share cash dividend by N to estimate gross cash distributions. This is separate from the yield calculation, which is a percentage based on price. If you plan to buy the shares, multiply the purchase price by the number of shares to estimate the capital committed, then compare the resulting gross income with the risks and costs.
Check the current withholding-tax rule
Use the Federal Board of Revenue’s Withholding Tax Rate Cards for the applicable tax year and investor circumstances. The page reviewed for this guide identifies a Tax Year 2027 rate card updated through 30 June 2026 under Finance Act 2026, but the dividend-specific row was not exposed on the landing page. Do not reuse an older dividend rate as though it were current; open the applicable card and verify the row before calculating net cash. Tax treatment can also depend on the investor’s status and other facts.
Account for brokerage separately
Brokerage commissions generally arise when you buy or sell, so include them when estimating total investment return and break-even price rather than silently subtracting them from the declared dividend. Ask the broker for the current schedule and any applicable charges. The same gross yield can produce different net outcomes when trading costs differ.
A practical comparison workflow
- Define the decision. State whether you need current cash income, total return, or a blend, and set a risk limit.
- Choose one valuation date. Use the same date and price convention for every PSX share in the shortlist.
- Set the dividend window. Use the preceding 12 months and include payments by payment date.
- Build the payment log. Record each cash dividend per share, payment date and source announcement.
- Calculate TTM yield. Add the payments, divide by the price and multiply by 100.
- Label estimates. Keep announced or projected forward yields in separate columns with their assumptions.
- Check sustainability. Review dividend history, EPS, payout behaviour and relevant financial statements.
- Review valuation and price context. Compare P/E, recent price movement, market capitalisation and sector conditions.
- Check tradability. Note free float and average 30-day volume, and consider whether your order could be executed near the displayed price.
- Estimate net results. Verify the current FBR tax card and include brokerage and other charges in a total-return calculation.
- Document the snapshot. Save the date, URLs, assumptions and rounding so the comparison can be updated consistently.
Common calculation and comparison mistakes
| Mistake | Why it changes the answer | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Using only the latest dividend | It ignores interim or additional payments | Add every qualifying cash payment in the 12-month window |
| Using declaration date instead of payment date | The payment may fall outside the selected period | Apply one payment-date rule consistently |
| Mixing price dates | Market prices move independently of dividend history | Use one stated date for all companies |
| Calling a projection trailing yield | It blends an assumption with historical data | Label it forward or estimated and disclose the assumption |
| Relying on the largest percentage | A price fall or one-off payout may be responsible | Check history, earnings, valuation and price context |
| Ignoring liquidity | The quoted price may not be achievable for your order | Review free float and average 30-day volume |
| Applying an old tax rate | Tax rules and rate cards can change | Verify the current FBR card for your tax year and status |
| Comparing rounded values only | Rounding can reverse close rankings | Keep full precision in calculations and round for display |
Choosing a useful interpretation
If your priority is dependable income
Give the greatest weight to a multi-year pattern of cash payments, earnings support, liquidity and a price you can tolerate holding through market declines. Use the TTM yield as a current income indicator, then test whether the latest payment resembles the company’s normal policy.
If your priority is total return
Combine yield with earnings growth, valuation, sector conditions and the possibility of capital appreciation or loss. A lower yield can be rational when a company retains cash for productive investment, while a high yield can accompany a deteriorating business and falling price.
If you are building a diversified shortlist
Use the PSX screener to narrow candidates, but avoid making every holding depend on the same sector or payout driver. Compare the underlying businesses, liquidity and risks before deciding position sizes. Diversification reduces reliance on one company’s dividend decision but does not remove market risk.
Bottom line
For Pakistan stocks, calculate trailing dividend yield by summing cash dividends per share paid during the prior 12 months, dividing by the share price on a clearly stated date and multiplying by 100. Make comparisons credible by matching periods and prices, then checking payout history, EPS, P/E, sector and price context, free float, trading volume, taxes and brokerage costs. Treat every forward yield as an explicitly labelled estimate, and verify current PSX data and the applicable FBR tax card before relying on an income figure.
