Calculate Bitcoin mining profitability in four passes: estimate expected BTC per day from hashrate, difficulty, the block reward and fees; convert that BTC to revenue at a stated BTC/USD price; subtract electricity, pool fees and other recurring costs; then handle hardware cost separately as payback or return on investment. The result is a time-stamped scenario, not guaranteed income, because difficulty, price, transaction fees, uptime and tariffs change.
The calculation in one view
Use consistent units and record the timestamp for every volatile input. Let H be sustained hashrate in TH/s, D network difficulty, u uptime as a fraction, S block subsidy in BTC, F average transaction fees per block in BTC, P_btc BTC price in USD, W wall power in watts, r electricity price in USD per kWh, h energized hours per day, and f_pool the pool-fee fraction.
- Expected BTC per day:
BTC_day = (H × 1012 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 232)) × (S + F). - Gross revenue per day:
Revenue_day = BTC_day × P_btc. - Electricity per day:
Power_cost_day = (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r. - Net operating profit per day:
Revenue_day − Power_cost_day − (Revenue_day × f_pool) − other_recurring_costs.
Hardware purchase, shipping, installation, cooling equipment, repairs, financing and resale value do not belong in the electricity line. Add them later for payback or ROI.

Miner measurements
| Input | What to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hashrate | Sustained TH/s at the intended frequency and temperature | Your expected share of network work is proportional to hashrate. A marketing maximum can overstate what the machine delivers continuously. |
| Wall power | Measured watts at the outlet, including the miner’s fans and controller | Nameplate power can omit fan, temperature and facility effects. The watt figure drives the bill directly. |
| Efficiency | J/TH = watts ÷ TH/s |
It lets you compare machines of different sizes. Cambridge’s CBECI methodology illustrates that a 1,000 W device producing 10 TH/s is 100 J/TH. |
| Operating hours | Actual energized hours per day, or 24 × u when uptime is expressed as a fraction |
Using 24 hours while also assuming downtime overstates energy cost. Do not apply the uptime factor twice. |
Network and market inputs
| Input | How to record it | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | Use the network difficulty in effect for the scenario timestamp | Difficulty changes the expected number of hashes needed for a block, so refresh it whenever you rerun the estimate. |
| Block subsidy | Enter the subsidy in BTC per block | The cited Calculator Collection methodology uses 3.125 BTC since the April 2024 halving. A future halving will change this input. |
| Transaction fees | Use an average BTC fee amount per block, or set it to zero for a conservative case | Fees vary by block. A subsidy-only calculator omits this revenue rather than proving that fees are zero. |
| BTC price | Record the USD price and the time it was observed | A dollar result without a price timestamp cannot be reproduced later. |
| Network hashrate | Track it as a reasonableness check alongside difficulty | The formula uses difficulty directly; network hashrate helps explain why your expected share is changing between runs. |
Operating and billing inputs
- Use the marginal or incremental kWh rate that the miner adds to your bill, not an advertised average rate.
- Add demand charges, fixed hosting charges, cooling charges and other site fees when they are triggered by the machine.
- Enter the pool’s fee as a fraction, such as 0.02 for a 2 percent fee.
- Model realistic uptime, including maintenance, network outages, thermal throttling and rejected work.
- Keep taxes, financing and depreciation in separate lines if you need an after-tax or cash-flow result.
Step 1: Estimate Bitcoin earned per day
The expected-hash formulation allocates your share of the network’s attempted hashes to the block reward:

BTC_day = (H × 1012 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 232)) × (S + F)
The factor 1012 converts TH/s to hashes per second. There are 86,400 seconds in a day. Difficulty is multiplied by 232, the conventional difficulty target constant. The subsidy and average fees are added before the result is calculated, so the formula reflects the entire block reward. If you use u = 0.95, the miner is assumed to contribute hashing for 95 percent of the day.
This is an expected value. It does not predict that a small miner will receive exactly that BTC amount every day. Pool accounting makes payments track contributed shares, while solo mining exposes the operator to the full randomness of finding a block.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 2: Convert BTC to gross revenue
Multiply the expected coins by a clearly identified BTC/USD price:
Revenue_day = BTC_day × P_btc
For a useful forecast, run at least a bear, base and bull case rather than silently treating one spot price as permanent. Keep the BTC price, difficulty, fee assumption and timestamp together in the worksheet so a later result can be compared with the original scenario.
Step 3: Calculate electricity cost from the meter and tariff
Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by energized hours, then multiply by the marginal tariff:
Power_cost_day = (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r
If a 3,000 W miner runs for 24 hours at $0.08 per kWh, the energy cost is (3,000 ÷ 1,000) × 24 × 0.08 = $5.76 per day. If it runs for 22.8 hours because uptime is 95 percent, use 22.8 in the electricity equation. Alternatively, use 24 hours and a separately measured average power draw that already reflects downtime; never reduce both inputs for the same outage.

Cambridge’s methodology expresses the same idea through joules per terahash and the electricity price per joule. Measuring wall draw is preferable because it captures the actual fans and operating conditions that a nominal efficiency specification may miss.
Step 4: Subtract pool fees and recurring operating costs
First calculate the pool deduction:
Pool_fee_day = Revenue_day × f_pool
Then calculate operating profit:
Net_operating_profit_day = Revenue_day − Power_cost_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs
Recurring costs can include hosting, cooling, internet service dedicated to the site, maintenance allowances and payment fees. Keep each item visible instead of hiding it in a single electricity number. A positive result means the machine covers the modeled operating expenses; it does not mean the hardware has paid for itself.
Worked scenario: 100 TH/s and 3,000 W
The following is an illustrative template, not a current market quote. Assume a miner rated at 100 TH/s and 3,000 W, 24-hour operation, and a $0.08/kWh tariff. Record the difficulty, subsidy, average fees and BTC price at the time you run the calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Compute the efficiency:
3,000 W ÷ 100 TH/s = 30 J/TH. - Insert 100 for
H, your recordedD, uptime fraction 1.0, the chosenSandF, into the expected-BTC equation. - Convert that BTC/day figure to dollars with the recorded
P_btc. - Subtract the known electricity cost of $5.76 per day.
- Subtract the pool fee on gross revenue and any hosting, cooling, maintenance or payment costs.
- For a rough 30-day view, multiply the resulting daily operating figure by 30 only after labeling it as a scenario. Difficulty, price, fees and uptime can change during those 30 days.
The example deliberately leaves the market variables blank. Filling them with an old difficulty or an un-timestamped price can make a precise-looking answer less reliable than a clearly labeled range.
Find the break-even electricity rate
Set net operating profit to zero and solve for the tariff:
r_break_even = (Revenue_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs) ÷ ((W ÷ 1,000) × h)

If your actual marginal rate is below this threshold, the machine has a positive operating margin under the selected difficulty, reward, fee, price and uptime assumptions. If the rate is above it, the machine loses money before hardware amortization. Cambridge’s threshold model states the same condition as electricity operating cost being no greater than mining revenue.
There is no universal Bitcoin ASIC break-even rate. A more efficient machine, a different pool fee, a new difficulty adjustment or a different BTC price changes the threshold. Recalculate it for each machine and scenario, and include demand or hosting charges in other_recurring_costs when they apply.
Model volatility instead of treating the result as a promise
Build three explicit cases with the same formulas:
| Case | Price assumption | Difficulty assumption | Fee and uptime treatment | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | Lower BTC price than the base case | Higher difficulty or network hashrate | Lower average fees and realistic downtime | Tests whether the machine survives adverse conditions. |
| Base | Price observed at the run timestamp | Current difficulty | Recent fee average and measured uptime | Provides the central operating estimate. |
| Bull | Higher BTC price | Lower difficulty | Higher fee assumption only when justified by the chosen period | Shows upside without presenting it as expected income. |
Refresh the scenarios after a difficulty adjustment, a major electricity-rate change, a halving, a material BTC price move or a change in the machine’s measured performance. A calculator that reports one number without these assumptions is difficult to audit.
Pool mining versus solo mining
| Aspect | Pool mining | Solo mining |
|---|---|---|
| Payment behavior | The pool pays for submitted shares in rough proportion to contributed hashing power, less its fee. | You receive a reward only when your own miner finds a valid block. |
| Variance | Payments are smaller but arrive more regularly. | Expected value can be similar, but a small operator can go a long time with no payout. |
| Modeling line | Subtract the pool-fee fraction from gross revenue. | Do not treat a monthly expected value as a guaranteed monthly cash receipt. |
| Best fit | Operators who need smoother cash flow and measurable share-based accounting. | Operators willing to accept extreme payout variance and manage their own block-solution risk. |
Bitcoin’s developer guidance describes pooled shares as a way to reduce the time between payments and the variance experienced by individual miners. The choice changes cash-flow risk, not the underlying electricity consumed by the machine.

When evaluating two or more machines, calculate each with the same timestamped network and market assumptions. Compare these axes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Axis | Calculation or check | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Net dollars per day | Use the full operating-profit equation for each machine. | Which unit leaves more after energy and recurring fees? |
| Energy efficiency | J/TH = W ÷ TH/s. |
How exposed is the unit to a higher tariff? |
| Break-even rate | Apply the threshold formula to each machine. | Will the unit remain viable if the tariff rises? |
| Purchase price and payback | Compare landed hardware cost with modeled net daily profit. | Does the efficiency gain justify the price premium? |
| Noise and heat | Check the installation environment, ventilation and cooling capacity. | Can the site run the unit without thermal throttling or extra cooling cost? |
| Electrical requirements | Verify circuit voltage, current capacity, connectors and local code with a qualified electrician. | Can the site supply the measured load safely? |
| Reliability and service | Use realistic downtime and repair allowances. | Will a nominally efficient unit lose its advantage through outages? |
The machine with the lowest J/TH is not automatically the best investment. A large purchase premium, difficult installation or poor uptime can outweigh its energy advantage.

Payback_days = Total_landed_hardware_and_setup_cost ÷ Net_operating_profit_day
Use this only when the modeled daily profit is positive. Total landed cost can include the miner, shipping, import charges, electrical work, cooling equipment and setup. For a more complete return model, add repair reserves, financing interest, taxes, resale value and downtime; state whether each item is a cash payment or an accounting adjustment.
Do not subtract the purchase price from the daily electricity line. Doing so makes energy efficiency impossible to compare and hides whether the machine is operationally profitable before capital recovery.
Measure your premises before trusting the spreadsheet
- Measure wall draw. Use a suitably rated meter or a professionally installed monitoring device at the circuit or outlet. High-current circuits require appropriate equipment and qualified electrical work.
- Observe sustained operation. Record watts and hashrate after the miner reaches normal temperature, not only during startup.
- Calculate efficiency. Divide the measured wattage by the sustained TH/s and retain the operating temperature and tuning settings.
- Read the bill. Identify the incremental energy rate, time-of-use period, demand charge and any fixed hosting or facility fee caused by the miner.
- Record downtime. Use maintenance logs, pool-reported uptime and rejected-share data to choose a realistic
u. - Save a snapshot. Store difficulty, BTC price, subsidy, fee assumption, pool fee and the UTC timestamp with the result.
Common calculation errors and how to correct them
Using hashrate advertised instead of sustained
Symptom: The spreadsheet predicts more BTC than the pool credits. Fix: Replace the headline TH/s with a measured or pool-reported sustained value and account for rejected shares and thermal throttling through uptime.
Mixing watts, kilowatts and joules
Symptom: Electricity cost is off by a factor of 1,000. Fix: Convert watts to kilowatts exactly once in the daily cost equation, or convert the tariff to a per-joule price and keep all units consistent.
Applying uptime twice
Symptom: Both revenue and energy are reduced more than the actual downtime warrants. Fix: Use uptime in the BTC equation and actual energized hours in the power equation; if hours already equal 24 × u, do not multiply them by u again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ignoring fees and site overhead
Symptom: The result shows a profit that disappears on the bill or pool statement. Fix: Add pool fees, hosting, cooling, demand charges, maintenance and payment costs as separate recurring lines.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Using subsidy only without labeling it
Symptom: Revenue is understated during high-fee periods, or two calculators disagree. Fix: Enter both S and F, or label a subsidy-only run as conservative and explain that transaction fees were omitted.
Confusing expected value with cash flow
Symptom: A solo miner plans bills around a smooth monthly payout. Fix: Model solo mining as highly variable block events, or use pool share accounting when regular payments matter.
Amortizing hardware inside electricity
Symptom: A machine comparison cannot show which unit uses less energy. Fix: Keep operating profit and capital recovery on separate worksheet sections.
A reproducible worksheet layout
Use one input block and one output block so another person can audit the result:
| Worksheet line | Value or formula |
|---|---|
| Hashrate | Measured TH/s |
| Wall power | Measured W |
| Uptime and hours | u and h; document how they were obtained |
| Difficulty, subsidy, fees | Timestamped D, S and F |
| BTC price | Timestamped P_btc |
| BTC/day | Expected-hash formula |
| Gross revenue/day | BTC_day × P_btc |
| Electricity/day | (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r |
| Pool fee/day | Revenue_day × f_pool |
| Other recurring costs | Hosting, cooling, demand, maintenance and payment lines |
| Net operating profit/day | Revenue less all operating lines |
| Break-even rate | Threshold formula using the same timestamped assumptions |
| Capital recovery | Separate payback or ROI calculation |
Keep the input snapshot with every exported result. When a number changes, you can see whether the cause was price, difficulty, fees, uptime, power draw or the tariff rather than guessing.
How to interpret the final number
- Positive net operating profit: The chosen scenario covers electricity, pool fees and listed recurring expenses. It still carries market, downtime and capital-recovery risk.
- Near-zero margin: Small changes in difficulty, price, fees, uptime or the tariff can reverse the result; treat the machine as economically fragile.
- Negative net operating profit: The miner loses money before hardware amortization under those assumptions. A lower tariff, better efficiency, higher uptime or different market conditions would be required to change that conclusion.
- Positive payback estimate: This is a scenario for recovering capital, not a promise that the hardware will operate unchanged for the calculated number of days.
The defensible decision is therefore not a single daily-income claim. It is a documented range with measured power, sustained hashrate, a timestamped network state, the marginal tariff and every recurring cost shown separately.
