Calculate forward price-to-sales (forward P/S) by dividing a company’s current share price by its forecast sales per share for a specified future period. For example, a $60 share price divided by forecast sales of $10 per share equals 6.0x. That means investors are paying $6 of equity value for each $1 of the selected forecast sales measure; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the stock is cheap or expensive.

The useful question is what explains the multiple: the company’s expected growth, margins, risk, revenue quality, and capital structure, compared with relevant businesses on the same forecast basis. Forward P/S is an estimate-based comparison tool, not a universal buy-or-sell threshold.

What forward P/S measures

Price-to-sales compares a company’s equity value with its revenue. The forward version uses forecast revenue rather than revenue already reported for a past period. TradingView defines forward price-to-sales as the current share price divided by estimated future sales per share. The result is usually written as a multiple, such as 6.0x.

“Forward” does not identify one universally required forecast period. A data provider or analyst may use next-twelve-month (NTM) sales, the next fiscal year, or another stated period. Therefore, a forward P/S figure is incomplete without its denominator’s time horizon, estimate source, and date. A 6.0x multiple based on one period or estimate set is not necessarily directly comparable with another 6.0x figure based on a different one.

Because the denominator is sales, not earnings, the ratio can still be calculated for a company reporting a loss. That can be helpful when earnings are negative or unusually volatile, but it does not make sales a substitute for profitability. A company can grow revenue while losing money or converting little of its sales into profit.

Forward P/S is an equity multiple: it describes equity value relative to the selected future sales measure. It does not say how much cash a company will generate, whether it will become profitable, or what return an investor will earn. Its meaning depends on the revenue forecast chosen for the denominator and the assumptions behind that forecast.

How to calculate forward P/S

Per-share formula

Forward P/S = current share price ÷ forecast sales per share

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the current share price and forecast sales per share on a consistent share basis. If the forecast is given as company-wide revenue, first divide it by the appropriate share count to calculate sales per share. The estimate’s period and date should remain attached to the result.

The per-share equation is a compact way to express the same comparison as equity market capitalization divided by forecast revenue. In the per-share form, the price is the equity value for one share, and the sales figure is the forecast revenue allocated to one share. In the company-wide form, both figures cover the company. Keeping the basis aligned is what makes the two approaches equivalent.

  1. Choose the price date. Record the share price and the date it was observed. Do not combine a current price with an estimate from an unidentified or materially different date without disclosing that mismatch.
  2. Choose and label the forecast period. Specify whether the sales estimate covers NTM, a named fiscal year, or another interval. Do not assume that two providers’ “forward” figures cover the same dates.
  3. Find the sales estimate and its source. Record whether it is a company forecast, an analyst consensus, or another estimate. Forecasts are estimates, not reported outcomes. A quoted ratio is more informative when readers can see what estimate it uses.
  4. Convert total forecast revenue to sales per share if needed. Divide forecast revenue by the share count used for the calculation, keeping the share basis consistent with the price and company data.
  5. Divide and label the answer. Divide the share price by forecast sales per share, then present the multiple with its forecast period, estimate source, and as-of date. Those details make the calculation reproducible and help readers distinguish changes in price from changes in the sales estimate.

Illustrative calculation

If a share trades at $60 and forecast sales for the stated future period are $10 per share, the calculation is:

$60 ÷ $10 = 6.0x forward P/S

The inputs are illustrative, not market observations. The result says the price is six times the selected forecast sales per share. It does not say the company will earn six dollars of profit, nor does it estimate how much an investor will receive.

Company-wide equivalent

The same ratio can be calculated using company-wide figures:

Forward P/S = equity market capitalization ÷ forecast revenue

Market capitalization represents equity value, so the numerator and denominator must be on a matching basis. For example, do not divide an equity value by a firm-wide measure that has not been aligned to equity. The per-share and company-wide methods are algebraically equivalent when the price, market capitalization, sales forecast, and share count are consistent.

Use the company-wide expression as a cross-check when both inputs are available: the equity value and forecast revenue should refer to the same company and compatible measurement basis. If they do not, the resulting quotient may look precise while answering a different question from the one intended.

How to interpret the multiple

A forward P/S of 6.0x means the market price represents six dollars of equity value for each dollar of the chosen forecast sales measure. It is a relative valuation measure. To assess whether it is high or low, compare it with a useful reference and determine whether differences in business fundamentals justify a premium or discount.

The CFA Institute’s discussion of price multiples identifies growth, profit margin, and required return as important drivers of justified P/S. The multiple should therefore be read alongside the company’s economics rather than treated as a grade on its own. A ratio is most useful as the beginning of an explanation: what could make investors assign a higher or lower value to each dollar of expected sales?

  • Growth expectations: All else equal, stronger expected sales growth can support a higher P/S because investors may expect more future sales from each dollar of current revenue. Check whether that growth is forecast, already achieved, or dependent on uncertain assumptions. A forecast for rapid growth is not a guarantee that sales will reach the projected level.
  • Margins and costs: Two businesses with identical sales can produce very different profits because of differences in operating costs and margins. P/S does not account for those differences, so sales growth alone cannot establish that a higher multiple is warranted. Consider whether a company’s sales are translating into attractive margins or whether its cost structure consumes much of its revenue.
  • Required return and risk: A higher required return lowers the present value investors may be willing to assign to future fundamentals. CFA Institute identifies required return as an inverse driver of justified P/S. Risk, business uncertainty, and forecast reliability matter when interpreting a multiple.
  • Revenue quality: Reported sales can be affected by revenue-recognition practices. Consider how the company recognizes and reports revenue before treating its sales base as directly comparable to another business’s.
  • Capital structure: P/S uses equity value. If companies have materially different debt and cash positions, their equity values may not give a like-for-like view of the underlying businesses; EV-to-sales may be more suitable.

Why a lower multiple is not automatically a bargain

A lower forward P/S can reflect a lower share price, but it can also reflect weaker expected growth, thinner margins, higher risk, or other business differences. The multiple alone cannot distinguish a temporary mispricing from a justified discount. Investigate what assumptions and business characteristics explain the gap before drawing a conclusion.

For example, a low ratio should prompt questions rather than an automatic conclusion: Is the sales forecast weaker than peers’ forecasts? Are margins lower, or is the business exposed to more uncertainty? Is the revenue measure comparable? Those checks help explain a discount, but the ratio alone cannot establish whether the market has overreacted.

Why a higher multiple is not automatically irrational

A higher P/S may be consistent with stronger expected growth or margins, all else equal. But a forecast-based denominator can be wrong: if projected sales do not materialize, a multiple calculated from them may understate how much the current price represents relative to sales ultimately achieved. Scrutinize the estimate as carefully as the share price.

Young or evolving firms are one context in which forward multiples can be considered: Aswath Damodaran’s NYU Stern teaching material discusses forward multiples in relation to future-year fundamentals, including for such firms. That does not make a high sales multiple inherently reasonable. It means the analysis depends especially on the assumptions about future sales, margins, and risk, and on whether those assumptions can be compared with a suitable business or history.

How to make a useful comparison

Compare a company with a relevant peer group, industry, sector, index, or its own historical average or median. CFA Institute describes these as common reference points for price multiples. The SEC’s investor education guidance notes that desirable financial ratios can vary by industry, so a broad market comparison may be less informative than one based on similar businesses.

  1. Match the forecast horizon. Compare NTM with NTM, or the same named fiscal year with that same fiscal year. A longer forecast horizon can produce a different denominator and therefore a different multiple.
  2. Match the revenue basis. Check that each figure uses a comparable revenue definition and accounting context. If a figure is adjusted or non-GAAP, identify it rather than presenting it as if it were an unadjusted GAAP measure.
  3. Choose businesses with relevant similarities. Consider business model, growth outlook, margins, risks, and revenue-recognition practices. A company in the same broad industry may still have a different economics or risk profile.
  4. Use a consistent estimate date and source where possible. If prices or forecasts come from different dates or providers, disclose that. Changes in estimates can alter forward P/S even if the share price has not moved.
  5. Explain the gap, not just its size. If the company’s multiple is above or below a reference group, examine whether differences in growth, margins, risk, revenue quality, or capital structure help account for it.

There is no universal cutoff in the cited sources that makes a forward P/S “high,” “low,” or fair for every company. A threshold detached from sector, forecast period, date, and fundamentals would obscure more than it explains. No market-wide average or threshold is included here because a useful figure would need a dated dataset and a clearly defined population and period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When using a company’s own historical average or median, the comparison still needs context. A business can change over time, as can its growth expectations, margins, risk, or accounting. The historical figure is a reference point, not proof that the current multiple should return to that level. Ask whether the business and forecast assumptions are sufficiently similar across the comparison periods.

When EV-to-sales may be a better comparison

Price-to-sales uses equity value; enterprise value (EV) includes debt and equity, net of cash and investments. EV-to-sales therefore places a firm-wide value measure over revenue. CFA Institute describes EV-to-sales as conceptually preferable when comparing companies with varying capital structures because its numerator is more capital-structure aware.

Measure Numerator Denominator Useful distinction
Forward P/S Equity market capitalization, or current share price in the per-share form Forecast revenue, or forecast sales per share Measures equity value relative to forecast sales; capital structure differences can complicate comparisons.
Forward EV-to-sales Enterprise value, including debt and equity net of cash and investments Forecast revenue Can better account for capital-structure differences when comparing companies.

Do not improvise a ratio by pairing an equity numerator with a firm-wide denominator. Choose the multiple that matches the question and keep the numerator and denominator conceptually aligned. EV-to-sales is not a cure for every comparability problem: forecasts, revenue definitions, margins, and risks still need examination.

The choice is about what value measure is being compared with revenue. If the question concerns equity value relative to sales, forward P/S is the relevant structure. If differing debt and cash positions make an equity-value comparison less informative, EV-to-sales can make the comparison more consistent at the firm level. Neither measure explains profitability by itself.

Forecast and accounting cautions

Forecasts are uncertain and period-dependent

A forecast is not a reported result. A company’s guidance, analyst estimate, or other projection can change, and the same business can show different multiples against different forecast periods. TradingView’s definition identifies estimated future sales per share but does not prescribe one horizon. State the chosen period and data date whenever quoting a forward P/S.

Also distinguish a change in the multiple from a change in its inputs. The ratio can move if the share price changes, if the forecast sales estimate changes, or if both change. Reporting the date and estimate basis makes it easier to understand which input may have shifted; an unlabeled figure hides that context.

Sales do not show the cost of producing them

CFA Institute notes that sales are generally more stable than earnings and are never negative, which helps explain why analysts may use P/S when earnings are unsuitable. The trade-off is that the ratio can fail to reflect loss-making businesses well and does not capture differences in cost structure. A sales multiple should not be read as evidence that a company has a viable path to profit.

This limitation matters in both directions. A company with positive sales can still report losses, while a business with similar sales may have a very different cost structure and margin profile. P/S can provide a denominator when earnings are negative or unusually volatile, but a separate look at profitability and the economics of producing those sales remains necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accounting comparability matters

Revenue-recognition practices can affect reported sales, and adjusted revenue measures may not be directly comparable with GAAP revenue. SEC Division of Corporation Finance guidance on non-GAAP financial measures says that, where applicable, a ratio containing a non-GAAP numerator or denominator should also present the ratio using the most directly comparable GAAP measure with equal or greater prominence. When analyzing or quoting an adjusted-sales multiple, identify the measure and check whether a comparable GAAP-based ratio is also shown.

That presentation point is especially important when comparing ratios from different company materials or data providers. A forward multiple built on adjusted revenue should not be silently treated as though it used the same denominator as one built on GAAP revenue. State the basis, and make the comparable GAAP ratio visible where the SEC guidance applies.

A concise reporting checklist

  • Give the formula and identify the result as an equity valuation multiple.
  • State the share-price date, forecast period, estimate source, and estimate date.
  • Use matching share or company-wide bases for the numerator and denominator.
  • Compare with an appropriate peer set, sector, index, or company history, not an unsupported universal threshold.
  • Discuss growth, margins, required return or risk, revenue quality, and capital structure where material.
  • Label adjusted or non-GAAP revenue clearly, and consider the SEC’s comparable-GAAP presentation guidance when applicable.
  • Do not treat the multiple as a standalone fair-value verdict or as a forecast that sales will be achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate forward price-to-sales ratio?

Divide the current share price by forecast sales per share for a stated future period. You can also divide equity market capitalization by forecast revenue, as long as the numerator and denominator use matching company-wide bases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a forward P/S of 6.0x mean?

It means the share price is six times the selected forecast sales per share, or investors are paying $6 of equity value for each $1 of that forecast sales measure. It does not mean the company earns $6 of profit or that the stock is fairly valued.

What forecast period should I use?

Forward P/S has no single universally prescribed horizon. Identify whether the figure uses next-twelve-month sales, the next fiscal year, or another period, and state the estimate source and as-of date. Use the same horizon when comparing companies.

Is a lower forward P/S always better?

No. A lower multiple may reflect weaker expected growth, thinner margins, higher risk, or other business differences, rather than an undervalued stock. Compare relevant fundamentals and forecasts before drawing a conclusion.

Why might EV-to-sales be better than forward P/S?

P/S uses equity value, while enterprise value includes debt and equity net of cash and investments. EV-to-sales may be more useful when companies have materially different capital structures, though forecast, revenue, margin, and risk differences still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use forward P/S for a company with negative earnings?

The ratio can still be calculated because it uses sales rather than earnings, and sales are generally more stable than earnings and are never negative. However, P/S does not capture cost-structure differences and can fail to reflect loss-making businesses well, so it is not a substitute for assessing profitability.

The Bottom Line

Forward P/S is current share price divided by forecast sales per share, or equity market capitalization divided by forecast revenue on a consistent basis. State the forecast period, estimate source, and date; compare like with like; and use growth, margins, risk, revenue quality, and capital structure to explain the multiple. No single P/S figure is a standalone verdict on value.
