To calculate a stock’s five-year performance, first decide whether you want a price return or a total return. Use comparable closing prices from the same security, currency, exchange and five-year window. Then calculate cumulative return as (ending value ÷ starting value) − 1. Annualize that result with CAGR: (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. For exactly five years, the exponent is 1/5. Use a provider’s split-and-dividend-adjusted close when you want a dividend-inclusive result and disclose whether dividends, taxes and fees are included.

What you are measuring

A five-year return answers how much an investment changed between two historical points. It does not automatically tell you whether dividends were counted, whether a stock split was handled correctly, or how the result compounds from year to year. Those choices determine whether your answer is a price return, a total return, a cumulative percentage or an annualized rate.

Price return

A price return measures the change in the share price and excludes cash distributions. Use closes adjusted for stock splits, but do not add dividends. This answers a question such as, “How much did the quoted share value change?”

Total return

Total return includes distributions such as dividends, interest and capital gains. For a stock, the practical version normally includes dividends and assumes they are reinvested. You can use a data provider’s adjusted-close series when that field is defined to include both splits and dividends, or reconstruct the result from dividend dates and prices.

Cumulative return versus CAGR

Cumulative return is the total percentage change over the whole holding period. CAGR, or compound annual growth rate, converts the same endpoint growth into a smoothed annual rate. CAGR is a description of what constant annual compounding would have produced the observed endpoints; it is not a forecast and does not claim that the stock actually gained the same percentage every year.

Measure What it includes Formula
Price return Split-adjusted price change; dividends excluded (V1 ÷ V0) − 1
Total return Price change plus distributions, normally with dividends reinvested (V1 ÷ V0) − 1 using a total-return value series
CAGR Annualized endpoint growth for the stated period (V1 ÷ V0)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

Choose the five-year window correctly

Start by defining the two observations you will compare. A calendar date may fall on a weekend or market holiday, so use the closing price on the last trading day on or before the chosen start date and the closing price on the last trading day on or before the chosen end date. Record the actual trading dates in your worksheet.

Keep all of these factors constant:

  • The same ticker and class of security, rather than switching between common shares, depositary receipts or another class.
  • The same exchange and currency. A return in one currency is not directly comparable with a return in another unless currency effects are intentionally included.
  • The same price convention at both endpoints: unadjusted close for a price-only calculation, or the provider’s dividend-and-split-adjusted close for a total-return calculation.
  • The same source and adjustment methodology whenever you compare several stocks.

For a nominal five-year comparison, choose dates that are five years apart as closely as the trading calendar permits. If the observations are not exactly five years apart, calculate the elapsed period in years under a stated day-count convention and use that value in the CAGR exponent. Do not silently label a 4.8-year or 5.2-year interval as exactly five years.

Collect the right historical prices

  1. Identify the security. Verify the ticker, share class, exchange and currency before downloading prices.
  2. Set the date range. Include the earliest and latest trading observations needed for the two endpoints. Keep the exact dates shown by the data provider.
  3. Select the price field. Choose a split-adjusted close for price return, or an adjusted close that the provider defines as including dividends and splits for total return.
  4. Save the metadata. Note the provider, retrieval date, currency, adjustment convention and whether distributions are assumed to be reinvested.
  5. Check the observations. Look for missing values, duplicate dates, a ticker change or an unexpected jump that could indicate an unhandled corporate action.

Yahoo’s definition is explicit: “Adjusted close is the closing price after adjustments for all applicable splits and dividend distributions.” That definition makes an adjusted-close series suitable for dividend-inclusive analysis when the field is being used consistently at both endpoints. Other providers may use different conventions, so read the field description rather than assuming that every column called “adjusted close” means the same thing.

Calculate cumulative five-year return

Let V0 be the starting value and V1 the ending value. The cumulative return is:

Cumulative return = (V1 ÷ V0) − 1

Multiply the decimal result by 100 to express it as a percentage. For example, if a hypothetical $1,000 investment becomes $1,800, the calculation is:

(1,800 ÷ 1,000) − 1 = 0.80

The cumulative return is therefore 80%. This says the ending value is 1.8 times the starting value over the selected interval. It does not say the stock gained 80% in each year, and it does not identify how much of the gain came from dividends unless you selected a total-return series.

Using a spreadsheet

Place the starting value in one cell and the ending value in another. If the starting value is in A2 and the ending value is in B2, enter =B2/A2-1. Format the result as a percentage. Keep the underlying decimal visible in a separate cell if you need to audit rounding.

Calculate CAGR for exactly five years

The annualized formula for a five-year interval is:

CAGR = (V1 ÷ V0)^(1 ÷ 5) − 1

This is the same endpoint relationship used in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s standardized-return equation: an initial amount compounded at a constant rate for the stated number of years equals the ending value. Rearranging that relationship gives the CAGR formula.

Using the $1,000-to-$1,800 example:

1.8^(1/5) − 1 = 0.1487

The five-year CAGR is approximately 14.87%, rounded to two decimal places. Dividing the 80% cumulative gain by five would produce 16%, but that is not a compound annual rate. Compounding 14.87% for five years, rather than adding 16% linearly, returns approximately 80% total growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spreadsheet formula

With the same cells, enter =(B2/A2)^(1/5)-1 and format the result as a percentage. The value 5 is appropriate only when the endpoints represent exactly five years under your stated convention.

Use elapsed years when the dates are not exact

When the endpoints are not exactly five years apart, replace 5 with the elapsed time in years:

CAGR = (V1 ÷ V0)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

Calculate years from the two recorded trading dates using a clearly stated day-count convention. The important point is consistency: use the same convention for every stock in a comparison and show the actual dates alongside the result. A small difference in the interval can affect the annualized number, especially when comparing investments with similar returns.

Adjusted close, dividends and stock splits

Why a split must be adjusted

A stock split changes the number of shares and the quoted price per share without, by itself, changing the investor’s wealth. For example, after a two-for-one split, one old share becomes two shares and the quoted price is approximately halved. If you compare an old raw close with a later post-split close, the apparent price change can be dramatically wrong. A split-adjusted series restates earlier observations so the endpoint comparison reflects economic value rather than a change in share count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why dividends change the answer

On the ex-dividend date, the share price generally falls by approximately the distribution amount, all else equal. A calculation that uses only quoted prices therefore omits the cash received by the shareholder. That is a legitimate price return, but it is not a dividend-inclusive total return.

For total return, use an adjusted-close field whose definition includes dividend distributions, or reconstruct the investment by adding each dividend and reinvesting it according to a documented rule. SEC performance-graph rules assume reinvestment of dividends when calculating cumulative total return. State that assumption because taking dividends as cash instead of reinvesting them produces a different ending value.

What adjusted close does not automatically settle

An adjusted close may incorporate split and dividend multipliers while leaving other investor-specific effects outside the series. Taxes, commissions, bid-ask spreads, withholding and the timing of reinvestment can all change an individual investor’s realized result. Do not present a provider’s adjusted-close CAGR as an after-tax personal return unless those items were actually modeled.

A complete worked example

Assume the selected start observation is a split-adjusted close of $50 and the selected end observation is $90. The interval is exactly five years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price-return calculation

  1. Divide the ending value by the starting value: 90 ÷ 50 = 1.8.
  2. Subtract one: 1.8 − 1 = 0.8.
  3. Convert to a percentage: 80% cumulative price return.
  4. Annualize it: 1.8^(1/5) − 1 = 14.87% CAGR, rounded.

If those two prices are unadjusted closes and the company paid dividends, the result is price return only. To calculate total return, replace both values with the provider’s consistently defined dividend-and-split-adjusted values, or add and reinvest the distributions before applying the same formulas.

How to reconstruct total return when no adjusted series exists

Reconstruction requires more than adding the total dollar amount of dividends. For each distribution, use the ex-dividend date, the eligible share count and the price at which the distribution is reinvested. Update the share count after each reinvestment, then value the final shares at the ending price. Also adjust historical prices and share counts for stock splits so that the series remains comparable.

  1. Begin with the number of shares purchased at the start value.
  2. Apply every split to the share count and per-share price according to the announced ratio.
  3. On each ex-dividend date, calculate the dividend cash for the shares held.
  4. Reinvest that cash using the documented reinvestment price and add the resulting fractional shares.
  5. Continue through the ending date and multiply the final share count by the ending price.
  6. Use that ending value and the original starting value in the cumulative-return and CAGR formulas.

If you cannot establish the reinvestment price, distribution treatment or split history, label the result as an estimate and do not call it a precise total return.

Compare several stocks without mixing methodologies

A ranking is meaningful only when the calculations use the same axes. For every stock, align:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Return type: compare price return with price return, or total return with total return.
  • Time window: use identical start and end trading dates, not merely the same calendar years.
  • Annualization: compare cumulative figures with cumulative figures and CAGR with CAGR.
  • Currency: use one currency or explicitly include the effect of currency conversion.
  • Distribution treatment: specify whether dividends were reinvested, paid as cash or excluded.
  • Data methodology: use the same provider convention where possible and document any differences.
  • Costs and taxes: either exclude them for every stock or model them consistently.

Do not compare one company’s adjusted-close total return with another company’s unadjusted price return. That comparison gives the first stock credit for dividends while denying the second stock the same treatment.

Document assumptions so the result can be reproduced

A useful calculation can be checked months later by another reader. Keep a compact audit record containing:

  • Ticker, security class, exchange and currency.
  • Exact start and end trading dates.
  • Starting and ending values, including whether they are close or adjusted close.
  • Data provider and the provider’s definition of the selected field.
  • Whether dividends were included and reinvested.
  • Whether taxes, fees and currency conversion were excluded or modeled.
  • The elapsed-years convention used for CAGR.
  • Rounding rules and the unrounded values used in the formulas.

The SEC cautions that performance claims depend on how dividends, taxes, and market and economic assumptions are handled. Presenting these assumptions next to the percentage prevents a precise-looking number from being mistaken for a universal result.

Common errors and how to correct them

Dividing the cumulative gain by five

An 80% five-year gain is not a 16% CAGR. Use the fifth root of the growth multiple, as in 1.8^(1/5)-1.

Calling a price-only result total return

If dividends were paid but omitted, label the result price return. Use a dividend-inclusive adjusted series or a documented reinvestment reconstruction for total return.

Mixing trading dates

Using one stock’s close from a Friday and another’s from the following Monday changes the window. Select the last trading day on or before each target date for every security.

Mixing currencies or vendors

A currency change or a different adjustment methodology can overwhelm the difference between stocks. Standardize both, or explain exactly why the comparison uses different conventions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes and fees

A historical market-series return is not necessarily an investor’s net return. State whether taxes, commissions, fund expenses and other costs are outside the calculation.

Treating CAGR as a forecast

CAGR smooths the observed endpoints. It does not imply that the stock earned that rate in each year or that it will earn it in the future.

Interpreting the final number

Report both cumulative return and CAGR when the reader needs the full picture. Cumulative return shows the total change over the selected holding period; CAGR makes investments with different durations easier to compare. Neither measure describes the path between the endpoints. Two stocks can have the same five-year CAGR while one suffered a severe interim decline and the other rose steadily.

For a transparent report, write the result in a form such as: “From [recorded start date] to [recorded end date], the split-adjusted price rose from [starting value] to [ending value], an 80% cumulative price return and a 14.87% CAGR over five years.” If dividends were included, replace “price” with “total return” and state that distributions were reinvested according to the selected series’ definition.
