Put the bypass in Varnish’s vcl_recv stage and send WordPress administration, login, preview, and authenticated requests to return (pass). Varnish’s built-in policy already passes requests carrying a Cookie or Authorization header, but explicit WordPress URL rules protect the administration paths even when a deployment customizes cookie handling.
Why logged-in WordPress traffic must bypass a shared cache
Varnish stores reusable HTTP responses so later requests can be served without contacting WordPress. That is useful for anonymous visitors viewing the same public page. It is unsafe for responses that contain a user’s dashboard, account state, nonce, admin bar, preview, or other personalized data.

If a cache treated the resulting response as a shared public object, another visitor could receive content generated for the first user. Varnish therefore takes a conservative approach: its built-in VCL passes requests with either a Cookie or Authorization request header, and backend responses that contain Set-Cookie are protected from normal shared storage.
The practical rule is simple: use return (pass) before a cache lookup for WordPress administration and authentication traffic, and preserve the default cookie and authorization protections unless you have tested every personalized response your site emits.

What return (pass) does
Varnish evaluates incoming requests in vcl_recv. Returning pass there tells Varnish to send the request to the backend without looking up a reusable cache object. The backend response is fetched for that request rather than being selected from the shared cache.
Varnish’s documentation describes the result this way: “Requests that end up in vcl_pass will bypass the cache, and will result in an uncacheable backend fetch.”

Piping is a different connection mode intended for traffic that Varnish should forward without normal HTTP request processing. It is not the normal WordPress cache bypass mechanism.
The baseline VCL for WordPress
This compact rule follows Varnish Software’s WordPress example. It covers the standard login and administration URL patterns and excludes preview requests:

}The expression matches URLs containing wp-login or wp-admin, and it passes a request whose URL contains preview=true. In a normal installation, that catches wp-login.php, the /wp-admin/ area, and WordPress preview links.
Place the rule in the active VCL configuration used by the Varnish instance that actually receives the request. A snippet saved on disk has no effect if your host generates VCL from a control panel, a deployment template, or another configuration source.

Choose the bypass policy that matches your site
URL-only bypass
A URL rule is easy to inspect and reason about. It is a good baseline when the site uses the standard WordPress login and administration paths and when the built-in cookie rule remains active.

}URL matching is especially useful for traffic that is sensitive even before authentication is established, such as the login endpoint and administration interface. It also makes the intended exceptions visible to the next person who maintains the VCL.
Explicit administration-subtree bypass
If you want a rule that clearly describes an administration subtree, use an anchored expression:

}The /admin path in this example is illustrative. WordPress normally uses /wp-admin, so adapt the expression to the actual installation. A custom login URL also requires a site-specific pattern; a rule that only mentions wp-login.php cannot protect a renamed login endpoint.

A cookie-targeted rule can pass authenticated front-end pages even when their URLs look like ordinary public pages. WordPress commonly identifies a logged-in session with a cookie whose name begins with wordpress_logged_in_. A deployment can match that cookie in req.http.Cookie and return pass.

}Keep Varnish’s general built-in condition for any Cookie or Authorization header unless you understand every cookie your application uses. Restricting the bypass to one cookie can improve anonymous cacheability, but it can also miss another cookie that changes a response. Cookie names and application behavior can change with plugins, themes, membership features, experiments, or custom code.

How to install the rule safely
1. Find the Varnish layer that is serving the request
First identify whether the request reaches a self-managed Varnish service, a managed WordPress platform, a host-level cache, or a CDN in front of Varnish. More than one layer can cache the same URL. Editing a local VCL file will not change behavior if an upstream layer serves the response first.
Check the hosting documentation or control panel for the active VCL entry point. The filename, include structure, reload procedure, and permissions differ by deployment, so use the process documented for that environment rather than copying a command intended for another server.

2. Add the bypass in vcl_recv
Insert the WordPress conditions in the active configuration’s vcl_recv subroutine. Place them before any later logic that could select a cache object or rewrite the request. If the platform supplies a generated built-in VCL, add a supported override or include rather than editing a generated file that will be replaced on the next deployment.
Preserve the normal cookie and authorization behavior. Do not strip Cookie headers merely to increase hit rate unless you have mapped which cookies personalize which responses and have tests proving that private data cannot enter a shared object.
3. Load the configuration through the host’s documented process
Compile, activate, or reload the VCL using the mechanism supplied by your host or Varnish administrator. A syntactically valid file is not enough: the running Varnish process must actually be using the new configuration. If the platform offers a configuration status view, confirm that the new version is active before testing.
Validation checklist
Test from a client that can inspect response headers and, where available, Varnish logs. Perform the checks in an environment where you can safely log in and create more than one test account.

- Anonymous public page: Request a normal public page without authentication cookies. It should remain eligible for the site’s ordinary cache behavior rather than being forced through the bypass rule.
- Login endpoint: Request
wp-login.php. Confirm that it reaches the backend and is not served as a previously stored shared object. - Administration URL: Request
/wp-admin/and a representative dashboard screen. Confirm a pass path to the origin. - Preview URL: Open a WordPress preview containing
preview=true. Verify that the preview is generated for the current user and is not a cached public response. - Authenticated front end: Sign in, request a public-looking page, and check that the response reflects the signed-in session. If the request carries a cookie, the built-in cookie policy should pass it unless your custom VCL has changed that behavior.
- Response and log evidence: Inspect the headers and Varnish logs supplied by your platform. Confirm a pass or, where the implementation reports it, hit-for-pass behavior. Header names and logging commands vary by host.
- Logout: Sign out, clear the session cookie, and request the same URLs again. Make sure the logged-out response is not contaminated by a private response from the earlier session.
- Second account: Sign in as a different user and compare the dashboard, admin bar, previews, and any account-specific fragments. This catches leaks that a single-user test can miss.
Common failure modes and fixes
The rule exists but requests are still cache hits
The most common cause is that the edited file is not the active configuration, or an upstream CDN or host cache answered before Varnish. Trace the request path, identify every caching layer, and install an equivalent bypass at the layer that can serve the response. Then reload the active VCL through the platform’s supported process.
Only the dashboard is protected; authenticated front-end pages are not
URL rules cover administration paths, not every public-looking URL a logged-in user might visit. Keep the built-in cookie and authorization pass rules, or add a carefully tested logged-in-cookie condition. Do not assume that an admin URL rule protects a personalized home page, account page, membership page, or an admin-bar variant of a public page.
A custom login URL remains cacheable
The standard expression looks for wp-login. If a security plugin or custom configuration changes the login path, add the actual path to the URL conditions and test it directly. Also check whether the custom endpoint redirects to another URL that needs the same treatment.
Preview output appears stale
Ensure the condition recognizes the preview query parameter as it appears in the incoming URL. The baseline example matches preview=true; if your application uses a different preview mechanism, inspect the real request and create a rule for that pattern. Check upstream caches as well as Varnish.
A cookie-specific rule causes a privacy regression
Matching only wordpress_logged_in_ can overlook another cookie that changes the response. Revert to the general built-in cookie and authorization behavior while you inventory application cookies. Add narrower exceptions only after testing anonymous, logged-in, logged-out, and multi-user flows.
Set-Cookie responses appear in cache storage
Varnish’s built-in backend behavior treats responses with a Set-Cookie header as uncacheable for normal shared storage. If your custom VCL overrides that behavior, restore the protection or explicitly verify that no response setting private session state can be stored and replayed to another visitor.

Security and cache-efficiency decisions
Prefer protection over an unmeasured hit-rate gain
Passing every request with a cookie can reduce the number of requests that use a shared cache, but it is the safer default when cookie meaning is not completely documented. A small cache-efficiency improvement is not worth risking cross-user content. Measure changes on your own site if you later optimize the policy; do not assume a generic performance percentage.
Do not remove cookies globally without an application map
Some cookies identify a login, while others control language, shopping state, experiments, consent, or personalization. Stripping or ignoring them in VCL can make a private response look cacheable. Before changing the default policy, list the cookies emitted by WordPress, plugins, themes, and any reverse proxy, then test each response class that can vary by those values.

Overly broad regular expressions can pass far more traffic than intended and make troubleshooting difficult. Start with the standard WordPress paths, add documented custom paths, and include preview requests. Review query-string variations and redirects so that the rule follows the complete request flow.
Operational runbook for future changes
- Record which layer owns the active VCL and which layer can answer a cache hit before it.
- Keep the WordPress bypass near other request-routing rules so its purpose is apparent during review.
- Test both URL-based and cookie-based paths whenever authentication, preview, membership, or personalization code changes.
- After deployment, check an anonymous page, login, administration, preview, authenticated front end, logout, and a second account.
- Use the platform’s Varnish logs and response headers to distinguish a pass from an upstream cache hit.
- Recheck custom login paths after security-plugin changes.
- Never treat a successful administrator login as proof that every personalized front-end response is protected.
Recommended configuration
For a conventional WordPress site, begin with the explicit URL bypass and leave Varnish’s built-in cookie and authorization pass behavior intact:

}Add a logged-in-cookie condition only when authenticated front-end requests need a deliberate, visible rule and you have tested the complete cookie set. For a custom administration or login path, change the expression to match the real path rather than assuming WordPress’s defaults.
The finished configuration should demonstrate three properties: administration and login traffic goes directly to the backend, authenticated or otherwise stateful requests retain the default cookie and authorization protection, and anonymous public pages remain available for normal caching. Validate all three after every VCL or CDN change.
