The safest way to buy a used Nintendo cartridge is to combine a reputable seller, a written return route, sharp photographs of the exact item, a price consistent with completed sales, and several authenticity checks. A seal, a boot test, a matching label, or a low price can each be misleading on its own. Treat the cartridge, its codes, shell, board, packaging, region and software behavior as a single body of evidence, and walk away when the seller will not provide enough evidence to support the price.
Start with the transaction, not the cartridge
Counterfeit prevention begins before you inspect plastic or printing. Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says, “Use caution when purchasing used games.” The practical meaning is to choose a transaction that gives you evidence and a remedy if the item is not genuine.
Choose a seller with an enforceable return path
Prefer a seller or marketplace that publishes a clear return process and offers a payment dispute route. Read the conditions before paying: check the return window, whether the item must be sent back, who pays return postage, and how a materially misdescribed item is handled. A seller’s “100% authentic” statement is not a substitute for those protections.
Look for a credible transaction history rather than relying only on a high rating. Review recent feedback for comments about cartridge authenticity, accurate photographs, packaging and how the seller handled problems. A long history of unrelated sales is weaker evidence than relevant, recent feedback on used games.

Ask for the actual cartridge
Require sharp, well-lit photographs of the exact cartridge you will receive. At minimum, request the front and back; for a valuable or suspicious item, ask for close-ups of the label, product codes, shell, screws and board if the seller is willing to open it. Stock images hide the details that distinguish a genuine copy from a reproduction.
Ask direct questions in the platform’s message system so the answers remain part of the transaction record. A seller who responds with new photographs and specific information is lower risk than one who repeats a generic authenticity claim, refuses the back label, or says the item is already packed without showing it.
Compare the price with completed sales
Nintendo warns that products offered well below average retail price may be counterfeit or part of a scam. Compare the listing with several completed sales for the same title, region, condition and completeness. A low price can have a legitimate explanation—missing packaging, a damaged label, a common regional version or a nonworking item—but the seller should be able to explain it.

Use a pre-payment authenticity checklist
Before paying, record the listing and check each of the following. If several answers are uncertain, the safest decision is not to buy.
- Actual photos: Front and back images are sharp enough to read labels, logos, codes and shell details.
- Seller history: Feedback and transaction history show relevant used-game sales.
- Protection: The return and dispute process is practical and documented.
- Price: The asking price has a credible explanation when it differs greatly from comparable completed sales.
- Region and language: The cartridge, label and listing describe the same regional and language version.
- Completeness: Packaging and manuals are clearly identified as original, reproduced or absent.
- Codes: Product or serial codes are visible where the system uses them and do not conflict.
- Condition: The shell, screws and label do not show unexplained opening, poor reassembly or freshly reproduced printing.
Inspect seals, labels, region and packaging
What the Nintendo seal does—and does not—prove
Nintendo’s Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal indicates that a product was evaluated and licensed by Nintendo. Nintendo also advises checking for the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or Original Nintendo Licensee Seal of Quality and confirming region and language. These marks are useful evidence, but they are not conclusive: a counterfeit label can reproduce artwork and a seal.

Check whether the seal, Nintendo logo, rating symbol, title logo and legal text are crisp and correctly positioned. Compare the candidate with a verified cartridge or high-resolution reference photographs. Look for differences in font weight, color, alignment, fine print and the spacing around the product code.
Look for copied or mismatched printing
Blurry artwork, oversaturated colors, incorrect alignment, misspellings and a label that appears too glossy or too dull are warning signs. Compare the label’s background placement and sheen with a known genuine copy, not merely with another online listing that may also be counterfeit.
Counterfeiters may ship a cartridge separately from packaging or instruction manuals. If a listing represents a complete package, confirm that the box, manual and inserts are shown clearly and that their printing does not look freshly reproduced. A loose cartridge is not automatically fake, but it should not be presented as a complete original package.
Verify region and language
Region conventions vary by system and title. Confirm that the label, product code, game language and listing description agree. A shell from one region combined with a label from another can indicate a reproduction or a mixed-part repair. For Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges especially, Nintendo Life documents reproduction carts that mix regional shell and label conventions or omit expected Nintendo branding.
Nintendo DS: match the NTR code and check the software
Read the front and back codes
Nintendo DS labels carry an NTR code followed by a product number and region, according to Nintendo Life. The product number on the back should correspond to the number on the front. A front-and-back mismatch is a clear warning sign. Photograph both sides at an angle that makes the tiny characters legible, then compare the code with a known genuine copy or a reliable reference image for the same regional release.
Inspect shell markings and label quality
Check for weak or dull Nintendo and PATENT markings, copied artwork and poor molding. These details are supporting evidence rather than a single pass/fail test; regional and title variations exist.

Some Pokémon HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, Black 2, White and White 2 cartridges used special dark shells that appear translucent purple when held to light. Use the translucent-shell check only as corroboration because variants by region and title exist. A cartridge that lacks the expected appearance deserves more investigation, but the appearance alone cannot authenticate it.
Boot the cartridge without treating the result as proof
After delivery, insert the cartridge into a compatible console and confirm that the expected title appears. Unexpected software on the console menu is a strong red flag. A game that boots is not automatically genuine: reproductions can contain copied software, and a genuine cartridge can have a failing connection or damaged save memory. Use the boot result alongside code, label, shell and transaction evidence.
Game Boy Advance: label stamps and optional board inspection
Check the normal label elements
Authentic Game Boy Advance labels normally show the game logo, Nintendo logo, seal, rating symbol and product number. Nintendo Life documents stamped characters on genuine labels. Convincing fakes may lack those characters or show different print sheen and background placement.

Use a sharp, raking-light photograph to see whether the characters are actually stamped rather than merely printed into the artwork. Compare the location, depth and style of the marks with a proven genuine copy for the same title and region. Do not reject a cartridge solely because a photograph cannot reveal a stamp; request a better image.
Open the shell only when the purchase justifies the risk
For an expensive purchase, you can ask the seller to provide board photographs or, if you own the cartridge and accept the consequences, open the shell for comparison with photographs of a proven genuine board. Nintendo Life identifies a small Tri-Wing screwdriver for this task. Board signs to compare include the battery, component markings and overall layout.
Opening is optional. It can damage the shell, strip a screw or reduce resale value, and a seller may reasonably refuse to let a buyer open an item before purchase. If board access is essential to your decision, choose a listing that supplies clear internal photographs or a return option instead of forcing an inspection that could damage the cartridge.

Game Boy and Game Boy Color: compare the whole cartridge
Apply the same label, logo, region and shell-comparison method used for GBA. Compare the shell shape and color, Nintendo branding, label placement, product information and screw condition with a verified copy. Reproduction carts can combine a shell convention from one region with a label convention from another or omit expected Nintendo branding.

SNES, NES and N64: when the board matters
SNES security screws and board markings
Nintendo Life notes that authentic SNES cartridges use metal security screws. The board should carry Nintendo and year markings plus a serial code. A plastic screw, incorrect board markings or a layout that does not match documented genuine examples warrants a return or a substantially lower-risk transaction before you buy.
NES and N64 internal checks
For expensive or suspicious NES and N64 items, internal board inspection and comparison with documented genuine boards may be needed. Ask the seller for clear internal photographs and a return option before paying. If the seller will not provide either and the price is high, the risk is not justified by a promise that the cartridge is authentic.
Compare purchase options by evidence, not just price
When choosing among listings, score the practical evidence available for each one. The strongest option is not necessarily the cheapest; it is the one that combines verifiable details with a remedy if those details prove wrong.

Inspect the cartridge immediately after delivery
- Preserve evidence first. Photograph the unopened package, shipping label, cartridge, packaging, listing, seller messages and payment record. Save screenshots before the listing changes.
- Compare the received item with the listing. Confirm that the cartridge, label, shell and included materials are the same ones shown in the photographs.
- Repeat the physical checks. Read the front and back codes, inspect seals and printing, compare the shell and screws, and check region and language.
- Test on compatible hardware. Confirm that the expected title appears, that the game behaves normally and that saving and loading work. Record any unexpected title, compatibility problem or save failure.
- Stop if evidence conflicts. Do not open a cartridge, clean away markings or alter the label while a return or dispute may be needed.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The price is far below comparable completed sales and the seller cannot explain why.
- The seller refuses to show the actual cartridge, back label or board when the price warrants inspection.
- Photos are blurry, oversaturated or incorrectly aligned, or the label contains misspellings or a wrong region code.
- A Nintendo DS front and back product number do not match.
- The cartridge arrives loose even though the listing represented a complete package, or the packaging and manuals look freshly reproduced.
- The game boots as a different title, has save or compatibility problems, or the shell appears opened and poorly reassembled.
- There is no practical return or payment-dispute route.
What to do if the cartridge is counterfeit
Do not resell a suspected counterfeit as genuine. Keep the cartridge and all packaging in the condition in which it arrived while you document the problem.

- Photograph the cartridge, both labels, shell, screws, packaging, listing, seller messages and payment record.
- Request a refund through the seller or marketplace’s stated process. Describe the item as counterfeit or materially not as described and include the specific evidence, such as a mismatched DS code or an incorrect board.
- If the seller refuses or the deadline approaches, open the platform or payment provider’s dispute using the saved evidence.
- Follow the return instructions and keep shipping proof. Do not send the item to an address supplied outside the platform’s documented process.
- For suspected counterfeit activity, Nintendo’s support information includes an infringement-reporting contact. Reporting does not replace the seller or marketplace refund process, which is normally the buyer’s immediate remedy.
A practical decision rule for expensive games
For a low-cost, common cartridge, clear actual-item photographs, a plausible price, a protected transaction and matching physical details may be sufficient. As the price or rarity rises, require more independent evidence: high-resolution code photographs, region confirmation, board photographs or inspection access, and a return option that you have verified before paying.
Decline the purchase when the seller asks you to trust a single cue—such as a seal, a boot test or an “authentic” description—while withholding the other evidence. The cost of missing one listing is limited; the cost of an unreturnable counterfeit is the full purchase price and the loss of a reliable provenance record.
