You can buy stocks through a crypto platform only when it offers a regulated brokerage service in your country. The usual process is to open a separate brokerage account inside the platform, pass identity and eligibility checks, add eligible cash, choose an available order type, and submit the trade. That is not automatically a crypto-to-stock swap: for example, Coinbase says stock trades settle in USD, and USDC in its wallet may be converted to USD for payment subject to limitations.
What “buying stocks on a crypto exchange” actually means
A crypto app can present stocks beside cryptocurrencies without making the two assets the same product. A genuine stock purchase is a securities transaction in a brokerage account. You receive an ownership interest in the company (or fund) represented by the share, and the order is routed to securities markets such as the NYSE or Nasdaq. Coinbase describes its stock service as separate from its digital-asset service and identifies Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. as the securities provider.
The app is therefore acting as a front end for a brokerage arrangement, not simply changing a bitcoin balance into a share. The broker, clearing firm, custodian, investor-protection regime, trading hours, settlement cycle and available order types can all differ from the crypto side of the same app.
Can you use this feature in your country?
Eligibility is both geographic and account-specific. A platform may advertise stock functionality while limiting it to residents of selected countries, selected account types or a gradual rollout. Check the platform’s current eligibility page before moving money.

Coinbase’s stated regional availability
Coinbase’s onboarding documentation says: “Coinbase customers residing in the US or UK can trade US-listed stocks after creating a Coinbase Capital Markets (CCM) brokerage account and completing onboarding.” Its current description identifies US access for stocks and funds, while UK access is described for stocks. Availability and product scope can change, and other jurisdictions may have different rules.
Read the onboarding terms for your residence, tax status and account type. Do not assume that being able to trade crypto on the platform makes you eligible for its securities service.
Coinbase’s stocks and funds onboarding page is the relevant starting point for its current regional requirements.
What you need before placing a stock order
- An eligible residence: The stock product must be offered where you live, and you must satisfy any local restrictions.
- A verified platform account: Expect identity checks, personal information, tax details and possible additional review.
- A separate brokerage account: Coinbase requires onboarding for a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account rather than treating the trade as an ordinary crypto transaction.
- Eligible settlement funds: The platform may accept fiat cash, a specified stablecoin or transferred securities. The exact list is product-specific.
- A supported security and order type: Some apps support only selected US-listed shares or funds and may limit orders to whole shares or particular order instructions.
- An understanding of settlement: Cash from a sale may not be withdrawable or reusable immediately.
How to buy a stock on Coinbase when the feature is enabled
The following is Coinbase’s documented flow, used as a concrete example rather than a universal procedure for every crypto exchange.
- Confirm your eligibility. Check the stocks onboarding page for your country and verify that the security you want is supported. Coinbase currently identifies US residents for US-listed stocks and funds and UK residents for stocks.
- Open the securities area. Sign in at Coinbase.com or in the Coinbase mobile app and select the stock offering. Follow the prompts to create and complete onboarding for a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account. Coinbase says additional review may be required.
- Make eligible funds available. Coinbase’s buy instructions list cash in USD, USDC or transferred equities as possible funding sources. Confirm which source is available to your account. If you use USDC held in the Coinbase wallet, Coinbase says it is converted to USD for the stock purchase, subject to limitations. This is a conversion followed by a USD securities purchase, not direct ownership transfer from a USDC token.
- Open the buy ticket. In the described mobile flow, choose Buy & Sell, then Buy. Search for the stock or fund by its name or ticker and open the result.
- Choose an available order instruction. Review the ticket carefully. Coinbase’s cited stock-buy flow says only whole-share limit orders may be placed in that flow. The app can change as the feature rolls out, so do not assume that market orders, fractional shares or stop orders are available.
- Review the details. Check the number of whole shares, limit price, estimated USD amount, any displayed transaction charge or commission, funding source and disclosures. Confirm that the instrument is an actual stock or fund rather than a derivative or tokenized representation.
- Submit the order. Confirm only after checking the ticker and limit price. An order may remain open if the market does not reach your limit, and it can fill partially rather than all at once.
- Monitor status and settlement. Use the order and portfolio screens to see whether the order is open, partially filled, filled or canceled. A completed sale may still have proceeds subject to the securities settlement cycle before they become available for another use.
Coinbase notes that its mobile stock feature is rolling out gradually, so an eligible customer may not see the same controls immediately. If the stock tab or buy button is absent, follow the checks in the troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

Can you buy a stock with Bitcoin or USDC?
USDC
Coinbase says USDC in the Coinbase wallet can be converted to USD for a stock purchase, subject to limitations. The resulting trade settles in USD. Treat the steps as: hold an eligible balance, allow the platform’s conversion, then submit a USD-denominated securities order. The exchange rate, conversion availability and any displayed charge should be reviewed on the order screen.
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
The cited Coinbase stock instructions do not establish that bitcoin or every other crypto asset can fund a stock order. Do not infer support from the fact that the app accepts crypto deposits. If the funding selector does not list an asset, you cannot assume the platform will convert it automatically. You may need to convert it to an accepted cash balance first, with separate tax and transaction consequences in your jurisdiction.
Transferred equities
Coinbase lists transferred equities as another possible source of funds in its stock-buy flow. Transfer eligibility, timing and supported account types are product-specific; confirm the instructions shown for your brokerage account.
What you own: shares, stock tokens and perpetual futures
Actual shares through a brokerage account
An actual stock purchase represents public-equity ownership recorded through a brokerage relationship. The broker routes the order to a securities market, and a clearing and custody provider holds the position for the account. You may receive the economic benefits and obligations associated with the security, subject to the broker’s terms, corporate actions and applicable law.
Tokenized stock products
A token that tracks a company’s share is not automatically the same as owning that company’s share. Rights to voting, dividends, redemption, custody, transfer and insolvency treatment depend on the issuer’s legal structure and disclosures. Geographic restrictions and regulatory risks can also apply. Read the token’s offering terms; a price that follows a stock does not by itself prove that you hold the underlying equity.

Stock perpetual futures
Coinbase defines stock perpetual futures as “USDC-settled perpetual futures contracts that track the price of publicly listed equities and equity baskets without owning the underlying shares.” They provide synthetic exposure rather than share ownership. They can use leverage and require funding payments, and Coinbase describes them as available for 24/7 trading. A perpetual contract can therefore produce gains or losses very differently from holding the stock, especially when leverage, funding and liquidation are involved.

Before confirming a trade, identify the instrument label, contract specifications, collateral currency, leverage controls, funding schedule and liquidation rules. If the product page says “perpetual,” “future,” “contract,” “synthetic” or “settled in USDC,” you are not placing an ordinary share order.

T+1 does not mean every account balance changes exactly one calendar day later. Weekends, market holidays, partial fills, transfers and account holds can affect when proceeds are usable. Check the settlement date shown in your brokerage activity.

Broker, custodian and investor protection
Find the legal entities named in the disclosures for the exact account you are opening. Coinbase identifies Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. as a FINRA/SIPC member for its US securities service and names Apex Clearing Corporation for execution, clearing and custody. It also describes a separate UK arrangement through CB Payments Ltd.
Those protections apply according to the brokerage account’s terms and jurisdiction. Coinbase explicitly says SIPC does not apply to digital assets or to cash held in Coinbase Inc. or an affiliate account. Do not interpret a SIPC reference on the stock side as insurance for crypto holdings or every cash balance visible in the app.

Review the account agreement, fee schedule, privacy disclosures, custody language and regulatory status before funding the account. If the app does not clearly identify the broker and custodian, pause until you can obtain that information.

Stock platforms may charge transaction fees, commissions, spread-related costs, currency-conversion charges, regulatory assessments or other account fees. The cited Coinbase comparison says fees or commissions may apply but does not establish a current amount. Read the live order preview and fee schedule for your country rather than relying on a crypto trading fee tier.
Also check the operational limits that can materially change the result:
- Whether fractional shares are supported; Coinbase’s described mobile flow specifies whole-share limit orders.
- Whether the ticket offers market, limit, stop or other order types.
- Whether the security is available during the relevant market session.
- Whether extended-hours trading is offered and what risks or restrictions apply.
- Minimum order sizes, maximum position sizes and cash-transfer limits.
- Whether dividends, splits and other corporate actions are handled by the brokerage service.
Why stocks may not appear in your exchange app
Your country is not supported
Stock access can be restricted by residence, local securities law or product availability. Recheck the platform’s country list and do not use a VPN or inaccurate address to bypass it; that can create account and compliance problems.
Brokerage onboarding is incomplete
A verified crypto account may still need a separate securities application, tax information or additional review. Look for an onboarding task, document request or suitability questionnaire.

Coinbase says its mobile stock feature is gradually rolling out. Update the official app, sign in through the web interface if supported, and check the account’s notifications. If eligibility is confirmed but access remains missing, contact the platform rather than opening duplicate accounts.

You are looking at a different product
Some platforms place tokenized assets or perpetual contracts in a “stocks” section. Open the instrument details and verify whether it is a share held in a brokerage account, a token with separate legal terms or a leveraged derivative.
The security is unavailable
Not every listed company or fund is necessarily supported. Search by the exact ticker, read the availability message and confirm that the instrument is listed on a supported exchange.
A safety checklist before you confirm
- Confirm your country, account type and securities eligibility.
- Verify the legal broker, clearing firm and custodian.
- Read whether the order is for an actual share, fund, token or derivative.
- Check the quote currency and whether crypto will be converted to cash.
- Review share quantity, order type, limit price and expiration.
- Read every displayed fee, conversion rate and regulatory charge.
- Confirm market hours and the expected settlement date.
- Understand whether proceeds or transferred cash will be unavailable during settlement.
- Save the confirmation and monitor partial fills, cancellations and corporate-action notices.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a familiar crypto balance buys a share directly
Seeing USDC in the same app does not eliminate the USD conversion step. Confirm the funding path and the final settlement currency.

A token or perpetual contract can follow a stock price without giving you shareholder rights. Read the instrument description before placing the order.
Expecting 24/7 stock trading
Crypto markets can operate continuously, but ordinary shares follow securities-market schedules. A perpetual stock contract may trade 24/7 while the underlying share market is closed; that does not make the two products interchangeable.
Spending unsettled sale proceeds
With T+1 settlement, a sale can show as executed before the proceeds are fully available for withdrawal or another purchase. Use the settlement information in the activity screen.
Assuming protection follows the asset everywhere
Brokerage protections, crypto custody and cash balances can sit under different legal entities and rules. Check the disclosures for the specific account and asset.
When a crypto exchange is not the right route
If your platform does not offer regulated share trading in your country, use a properly authorized traditional brokerage available to you rather than treating a crypto product as an equivalent substitute. Compare the alternatives on actual ownership, country eligibility, funding and conversion, order types, market hours, settlement, custody, investor protections and total fees. The objective is not to keep every asset in one app; it is to use an account whose legal structure and product match what you intend to own.
