You can invest in South Korean equities through either a U.S.-listed South Korea ETF in a brokerage account that supports its exchange listing, or by buying an ETF listed in South Korea through an eligible Korean brokerage account. The U.S.-listed route may be operationally simpler for investors with U.S. market access; direct Korean-market access depends on broker eligibility, account setup, and local requirements. In either case, compare the fund’s costs and structure, trading and currency charges, and the risks before placing an order.
Choose an access route
Buy a U.S.-listed South Korea ETF
If your brokerage account can trade the relevant U.S. exchange listing, you can buy a South Korea-focused ETF much like another U.S.-listed security: check the ticker and current fund documents, confirm your broker permits the trade, then enter an order in your brokerage account. For example, an SEC-filed document identifies the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) as trading on NYSE Arca and seeking results that generally correspond to an index of South Korean equities. These funds are not interchangeable. Their index, holdings, concentration, costs, liquidity, and use of instruments can differ. Check the current prospectus and issuer fact sheet for the specific ticker rather than assuming one fund’s details apply to another.
Buy a Korea-listed ETF directly
Direct investment in securities listed in South Korea requires a suitable Korean brokerage relationship and account arrangements. One important access rule changed on December 14, 2023: South Korea abolished the former prior registration requirement for foreign investors. Foreign individuals may use passport numbers, while foreign corporate investors may use legal entity identifiers (LEIs), to open investment accounts at financial companies without first registering with the Financial Supervisory Service. The change removes a registration step; it does not guarantee that every foreign resident can open an account with every Korean broker or trade every product. Ask the broker about eligibility, identity documents, funding and custody arrangements, KRW conversion, order access, and any local requirements. Compare the full cost before trading
There is no universally cheapest route: the total cost depends on the fund, broker, account, currencies, and applicable taxes. Check the following for the specific trade:

- Fund expenses: Find the current annual expense ratio and other costs in the prospectus. Do not infer a fund’s fee from another South Korea ETF.
- Brokerage charges: Check commissions, transaction charges, and minimum ticket fees. Fixed charges can weigh more heavily on small orders, and frequent trading adds costs that can reduce returns. EWY SEC filing FLKR SEC filing.
- Bid-ask spread: The spread between the price to buy and the price to sell is an implicit trading cost. It varies with liquidity and market conditions and may widen during volatility. Review the live spread before entering an order. EWY SEC filing FLKR SEC filing.
- Premium or discount to NAV: ETF shares trade at market prices, which can differ from the fund’s net asset value (NAV). This difference may be more pronounced when the underlying Korean market is closed but a U.S.-listed ETF is trading. EWY SEC filing.
- Currency and transfers: A direct Korean-market route may require funding or settlement in a different currency from your base currency. Ask the broker how it converts money, what markup or transfer charges apply, and when conversion occurs.
- Taxes: Fund-level withholding on Korean dividends is distinct from your personal tax obligation. An SEC-filed prospectus states a general 22% Korean dividend withholding rate before any applicable treaty reduction; that is not a universal investor-level tax rate. For a U.S.-listed fund, check market status and the live spread before trading. A limit order lets you set the maximum price you are willing to pay, but it may not execute and does not remove market risk.
Compare U.S.-listed fund candidates
EWY, FLKR, and KSMX are examples to investigate, not a ranking. Compare their current documents and trading data on the factors below. The cited materials establish the funds as examples, but do not provide a current, comparable fee or holdings-weight comparison that supports a cost or diversification ranking.

- Index tracked and the resulting exposure
- Holdings and concentration in the largest positions
- Current expense ratio and other disclosed costs
- Fund assets, typical trading liquidity, and observed bid-ask spread
- Premium-or-discount behavior relative to NAV
- Fund structure, including any deposit receipts, derivatives, turnover, or investment in other funds
- Currency policy, including whether the fund uses hedging

Won movements and country concentration
South Korean securities are denominated in won. If the won weakens against your base currency, the value translated into that currency can fall even if local share prices rise. A South Korea ETF also concentrates exposure in one national market, where returns can be affected by export demand and large industries such as semiconductors and technology. Political, security, and governance risks
Fund disclosures identify country-specific legal, regulatory, political, and security risks, including tensions involving North Korea. They also identify governance concerns associated with chaebol business groups and controlling shareholders. These risks can affect South Korean companies and the value of a fund holding them. An ETF share’s market price is not guaranteed to equal NAV. Lower liquidity, volatility, or a closed underlying market can make pricing less direct and increase spreads or premiums and discounts. For a U.S.-listed ETF, Korean market hours do not match U.S. trading hours, so the fund may trade while its underlying market is closed. EWY SEC filing.

Fund structure and tax treatment
One fund’s disclosure should not be applied to every South Korea ETF. Deposit receipts, derivatives, turnover, concentration, and use of other funds vary by product; review the selected ETF’s current prospectus. Korean dividend withholding may reduce fund income, while treaty treatment, any tax recovery by the fund, and your own tax obligations depend on the relevant fund and investor circumstances.
