To buy a sculpture at auction safely, investigate the lot, calculate your maximum from the sale’s complete fee schedule, register through the accepted bidding channel, and arrange payment and delivery before you bid. The winning hammer price is only one part of the bill: buyer’s premium, tax, duties, shipping, insurance and other sale charges can materially change the total.

Every auction has its own conditions. Use the current catalogue, lot page, buyer conditions, invoice instructions and a written shipping quote as the controlling documents for your purchase.

What you actually pay for an auction sculpture

The hammer price is the winning bid when the auctioneer closes the lot. It does not include the buyer’s premium or other charges. Christie’s glossary defines the hammer price as the final bid excluding the buyer’s premium; its estimate guidance also explains that estimates are opinions based on factors such as condition, rarity, quality, provenance and recent comparable sales, and may be revised. Read the Christie’s glossary for those definitions.

Your practical budget is:

Total cost = hammer price + buyer’s premium + applicable tax or duties + shipping and insurance + other lot or sale charges.

Cost component What it means How to verify it
Hammer price Your winning bid before fees. Record the bid ceiling you intend to use.
Buyer’s premium A percentage of the hammer price, often tiered by price band. Rates differ by auction house, sale, location and sometimes lot. Use the current premium schedule in the sale conditions or fee page; never reuse a rate from an older auction.
Tax Sales, use, VAT or other transaction taxes may apply according to the sale location and delivery destination. Ask the auction house how tax is calculated for your bidder and shipping address.
Duties and import charges Cross-border purchases can incur customs duty, import tax and local clearance fees. Confirm responsibility with the auction house and the relevant customs authority or broker.
Shipping and insurance Packing, collection, transport and transit insurance; sculpture often needs a bespoke service. Obtain a written quote that names the destination, coverage and exclusions.
Other charges Possible artist resale royalty, overhead premium, storage, late-payment or handling fees. Check the lot entry, conditions, invoice and collection policy.

Christie’s summarizes the relationship this way: “The total cost to the buyer is the hammer price + buyer’s premium + any applicable taxes or shipping charges.” Read its current auction-fee explainer for the sale’s applicable structure. This is not a universal percentage: a premium can be tiered, and a sale can add charges that are not present elsewhere.

Research the sculpture before you bid

Read the complete lot entry

Start with the online catalogue, then open the full lot page rather than relying on a thumbnail or search result. Record the artist or maker attribution, title, date, medium, dimensions, weight when supplied, and any edition or casting information. Look for provenance, exhibition and publication history, catalogue amendments, sale symbols and saleroom notices. Amendments can change an attribution, measurement, condition disclosure or legal restriction after the catalogue first appears.

Understand condition and inspection

Request the condition report and compare it with the photographs and catalogue text. Look for repairs, replaced elements, cracks, losses, surface changes, restoration, mounting issues and anything that could affect packing or installation. Arrange an in-person viewing whenever possible, especially for a large, fragile, outdoor or heavily restored work. Sotheby’s global buyer guide states that lots are offered “AS IS” and in the condition they are in at the time of sale; it recommends inspecting lots where possible and treats condition reports as a convenience rather than a substitute for your own investigation. Read the Sotheby’s Guide for Buyers | Global and the sale’s own conditions.

Treat the estimate as a guide

The low and high estimate indicate the auction house’s opinion of likely bidding, not a guaranteed result and not a complete-cost budget. The estimate normally excludes the buyer’s premium and taxes, and it can be revised. A sculpture below estimate can still be expensive to deliver or import; a work above estimate can remain within your total budget if its logistics and taxes are lower. Base your decision on the maximum all-in amount you can pay, not on the estimate alone.

Check authenticity and documentation limits

Catalogue wording may distinguish “attributed to,” “workshop of,” “circle of,” “after,” or a firmly named artist. Note exactly what is asserted and what documentation is supplied. Provenance can support ownership history without proving every aspect of attribution. If a certificate, export document or other paper is essential to you, ask whether it is included, who issued it and whether the document transfers with the lot.

Set a maximum bid from your total budget

Decide the most you can spend on the entire transaction before registration. Then work backward from that ceiling. If the sale applies a tiered premium, calculate each possible bid band using the actual rates and add a conservative allowance for tax, shipping and insurance. Keep the allowance separate so you can see which assumption is uncertain.

  1. Write your all-in spending ceiling, including the amount reserved for delivery and taxes.
  2. Get the current buyer’s-premium schedule and identify the tier that would apply at each candidate hammer price.
  3. Obtain a shipping estimate or a realistic written range, including packing, transit insurance and destination charges.
  4. Determine whether tax, artist resale royalty, import duty or other line items apply to your bidder status and destination.
  5. Subtract those non-hammer costs from your ceiling. The remainder is your maximum hammer price.
  6. Round the result down to leave room for a changed quote, currency movement or an unlisted handling fee.

Bid increments are set by the auctioneer and sale rules. Sotheby’s glossary uses an approximately 10% step as an illustrative convention, not a measured statistic or a promise for any particular sale; the auctioneer can exercise discretion. Check the Sotheby’s auction glossary and buying information or, more importantly, the instructions for your specific sale. A maximum or absentee bid is a ceiling that the house may execute at the lowest available price, subject to the sale’s priority rules and any competing bid.

Compare sculpture lots on risk as well as price

When two works attract you, compare the variables that affect both value and total ownership cost. A lower estimate does not guarantee a lower final bill or lower risk.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Attribution and artist Is the work by the named artist, attributed, from a workshop, or after another artist? What documentation supports the wording?
Date and medium What are the material, casting or fabrication details, and are they suitable for the intended location?
Dimensions and weight Will doors, lifts, stairs and the delivery vehicle accommodate the packed sculpture?
Condition What repairs, losses, replacements or structural concerns are disclosed?
Provenance and records Is ownership history documented, and are exhibition or publication references supplied?
Estimate and comparables What factors does the house cite, and how uncertain is the result?
Fees and tax Which premium tier, taxes, royalties and duties apply to your transaction?
Delivery Do you have a written packing, insurance and transport quote to your exact address?
Restrictions Are export, import, CITES or destination restrictions likely to delay or prevent delivery?

Register and place the bid through the sale’s process

Registration requirements and deadlines vary. A house may request government identification, billing and payment details, financial references or a deposit for a high-value lot. Premium lots can have earlier approval deadlines than ordinary lots.

  1. Open the sale’s registration page and read its deadline, identity requirements, currency and accepted payment methods.
  2. Confirm whether you may bid in the room, by telephone, online, by written absentee instruction or through an approved representative.
  3. Check the sale’s bid increments, time zone, closing behavior for online lots and rules for a maximum bid.
  4. Submit any required deposit or financial reference early enough for approval; do not assume registration is instantaneous.
  5. Before bidding, confirm that the lot has not been withdrawn or amended and that your account is approved for that specific sale.
  6. During the sale, watch the lot number and bid status. Stop when your pre-set hammer ceiling is reached, even if the current bid remains below your all-in budget after a new fee or shipping assumption.

For online or absentee bidding, a maximum instruction generally authorizes the auction house to bid on your behalf up to your ceiling, rather than charging the ceiling automatically. Tie priority, competing absentee orders and auctioneer discretion can affect the winning bid, so read the sale’s mechanics instead of relying on a generic explanation.

After you win: invoice, payment and release

Wait for the official invoice and compare it with your worksheet. It should identify the hammer price and applicable charges, but the exact line items depend on the house, location and sale. Christie’s general payment guide says live-auction purchases are due within seven days and online-auction purchases immediately in the cases it describes; another house or a particular sale can set different deadlines. Use the deadline printed on your invoice and current conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment may be restricted to specified methods and may require the account holder’s funds. Do not send money to an unverified account based only on an email; use the auction house’s established contact details to confirm instructions if anything changes.

Before release, verify whether you owe any of the following:

  • Buyer’s premium and applicable sales or value-added tax.
  • Artist resale royalty where the jurisdiction and work qualify.
  • Import tax, customs duty and local clearance fees.
  • Packing, handling, storage, shipping and transit insurance.
  • Late-payment or other charges stated in the conditions.

Christie’s payment and shipping guidance explains its invoice and delivery process; consult the current version at Christie’s payment and shipping guide. Sotheby’s buyer guidance likewise says the invoice supplies payment and clearance instructions and warns that taxes, royalties, import charges, customs, local clearance and shipping can be payable by the buyer.

Plan sculpture shipping before bidding

Why sculpture needs a bespoke quote

Size, shape, weight, material, fragility, mounting and destination all influence packing and transport. A small bronze may fit a standard crate; a tall, projecting or delicate work may require custom materials, a specialist crew, lift-gate access or a scheduled delivery. Ask for a written estimate before you commit, not after payment.

What the written quote should state

  • Collection point, destination address and proposed route.
  • Packing method, crate dimensions and whether unpacking or placement is included.
  • Carrier, handling method, delivery appointment and expected timing.
  • Transit-insurance limit, deductible, exclusions and the process for reporting damage.
  • Taxes, duties, fuel or remote-area surcharges and whether the quote can change after final packing.
  • Quote validity period and the amount payable before release.
  • A fallback collection option if the carrier cannot serve your address.

Christie’s notes that the variety of object size, shape and material often requires a bespoke quote and that buyers may use an approved shipper or arrange their own carrier. It also warns that customs may impose duties and taxes and that some works require export or CITES permits; requirements can be noted on the invoice.

International delivery and permits

Ask who obtains export and import licences and who pays for them. Some destinations cannot be served by the auction house, and a permit delay can create storage costs. Confirm the border route, the importer of record, customs broker, declared value and documentation before paying. Do not assume that a domestic shipping quote covers international clearance.

Collection windows and storage

Read the pickup deadline and storage tariff. Christie’s cited general guide describes complimentary storage for 90 days followed by monthly charges, while Sotheby’s regional guidance uses its own timelines and fees. These policies are not universal and can change by location. The Sotheby’s collection, shipment, export and storage guidance explains why final packing and shipping costs can differ from an initial quote and why some destinations may be unavailable.

Receive and inspect the sculpture

Prepare the delivery site before the carrier arrives: check access dimensions, floor loading, weather protection and any lift or rigging requirement. Photograph the crate and its labels before opening. Inspect the sculpture immediately against the condition report and delivery record, then follow the carrier or auction house’s stated procedure for noting damage. Sotheby’s regional guidance specifically advises immediate inspection and prompt reporting of discrepancies. Keep all packing materials until the inspection period and any claim window has passed.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using the estimate as your budget

Problem: The estimate omits premium and may omit taxes and delivery. Fix: calculate an all-in ceiling and derive the maximum hammer bid.

Reusing an old premium percentage

Problem: Rates and tiers change by sale and location. Fix: copy the current schedule from the lot’s conditions and recalculate.

Skipping the condition report

Problem: photographs can hide repairs, losses or structural concerns. Fix: request the report, ask written questions and inspect in person when possible.

Waiting to solve shipping

Problem: a large or fragile sculpture can cost more to pack and deliver than expected, or the destination may be unavailable. Fix: secure a written quote and a collection fallback before bidding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Missing payment or collection deadlines

Problem: late payment, storage and handling fees can accumulate, and release can be delayed. Fix: calendar the invoice deadline, pickup window, permit milestones and storage tariff as soon as you register.

Assuming online bidding is risk-free

Problem: an unapproved account, wrong lot number, connection failure or misunderstood closing rule can prevent a bid or place it on the wrong work. Fix: register early, verify the lot and currency, learn the platform’s confirmation screen and keep the auction house’s contact channel available.

A final pre-bid checklist
