Buy the game from the PlayStation account you intend to keep, then protect that account as carefully as the payment method. A digital PS5 purchase is a personal license tied to the account—not a transferable copy—and closing the account can remove access.

This US-oriented guide explains the Store purchase process, regional payment limits, account security, recovery, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and the exact checks to make when a purchased game is locked or missing.

What you are actually buying

PlayStation Store digital purchases are licensed to the purchasing PlayStation account. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US English PlayStation Network Terms of Service, March 2026 edition, states: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.”

That wording matters when you change consoles, lose access to an account, or want another person to use a game. The license is generally non-transferable. It follows the account and the Store terms rather than creating a separable game file that can be handed to someone else.

$100 PlayStation Store Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
  • Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
  • Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.

The same terms warn: “If you delete or close your Account, you may lose access to and use of any purchased Content.” Some third-party games also require a linked publisher account. Unlinking or deleting that account can remove access even when the PlayStation purchase itself was completed.

  • Use the account you expect to retain for years, not a temporary account created for a single purchase.
  • Keep the account’s sign-in email, recovery options and any required publisher account available.
  • Do not describe a digital purchase as permanent ownership or a transferable copy. Access remains subject to the applicable Store and service terms.

Before you buy: account, region and edition checks

Use the intended purchasing account

Sign in to the PlayStation account that should hold the license before browsing or paying. Purchases made while another family member’s or temporary account is signed in will be associated with that account instead.

Confirm the country or region

An account’s country or region is selected during account creation and cannot later be changed under Sony’s terms. Open the Store that corresponds to that region. Payment methods, vouchers, taxes, currency, release dates and catalog availability can differ by country, so a card or gift card from another region may not work.

Check the exact product

Store listings can contain several editions, bundles, add-ons and cross-generation entitlements. Before selecting Buy, verify:

  • Whether the listing is the PS5 version, a PS4 version, or a bundle that includes both.
  • Which expansions, season passes, bonus items or virtual currency are included.
  • Whether the product has released in your region or is still a preorder.
  • The current price and currency shown by your local Store.
  • Any stated requirement for a PlayStation Plus subscription, online play or a separate publisher account.

Prices and availability can change. Treat the product page and checkout screen as the authoritative information for the transaction you are making.

How to buy a PS5 game digitally

1. Sign in to the right account

On the PS5, select the user connected to the account that should receive the purchase. In a browser or the PlayStation App, sign in with that same account and confirm its region before proceeding.

  • Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.

2. Open the local PlayStation Store

Search for the game by title, open its product page and select the desired edition. Read the included-content list and current price. If the product has more than one version, do not assume the cheapest listing includes the PS5 entitlement or downloadable bonuses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Choose a supported payment route

You can pay with a locally accepted payment method or with funds already in the PlayStation Store wallet. Accepted cards, digital wallets and other methods vary by country or region. Check your local Store before buying a voucher or relying on a particular card.

4. Complete checkout

Review the account, product, edition, price and payment source shown at checkout, then authorize the transaction. Sony’s wallet guidance says wallet funds are used first. If those funds do not cover the full price, the remaining amount can be charged to another accepted payment method.

5. Confirm the transaction

Keep the on-screen confirmation and check the account’s transaction history. The confirmation is useful if the download does not begin or the game later appears locked. A completed charge in a bank or card statement is not, by itself, proof that the correct PlayStation account received the license; verify the transaction in PlayStation account records.

6. Download from the purchasing account

Open your game library on the PS5 and start the download while signed in to the purchasing account. Once the console has the required sharing setting enabled, other users on that PS5 may be able to play the downloaded title; the license still remains associated with the purchasing account.

Funding the Store wallet

Sony’s US wallet instructions support adding funds through an accepted payment method or a PlayStation Store gift-card voucher. On PS5, the documented path is:

Rank #3
$50 PlayStation Store Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
  • Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
  • Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Users and Accounts.
  3. Choose Account.
  4. Open Payment and Subscriptions.
  5. Select Add Funds.

You can also add funds through the PlayStation App or web Store where those options are available for your region. Wallet balances are spent before another payment method at checkout. If the balance is insufficient, the remaining amount uses another accepted method.

Vouchers are region-specific in practice: a code purchased for one country’s Store may not redeem on an account registered elsewhere. Confirm the voucher’s region and denomination before purchase. Neither direct card payment nor wallet funding changes the account-security risk; whichever route you use, the resulting license is tied to the account that completes checkout.

Funding route What to check Practical trade-off
Direct payment method The card or service must be accepted in the account’s country or region. Usually the quickest checkout, but availability and verification rules vary locally.
Store wallet balance Confirm the balance, currency and local funding options. Wallet funds are used first; an additional method can cover any shortfall.
PlayStation Store voucher Match the voucher’s region and currency to the account’s Store. Useful when supported locally, but an incompatible-region code may not redeem.

Store purchase versus PlayStation Plus access

A full Store purchase and a game accessed through PlayStation Plus are different access arrangements. A purchased title is licensed to the purchasing account under Store terms. A catalog or monthly-game entitlement obtained through PlayStation Plus depends on the subscription and on the title remaining available under the service’s rules.

Question Direct Store purchase PlayStation Plus access
What grants access? A completed purchase associated with the account. An eligible subscription entitlement and the title’s continued availability.
What can end access? Account closure, account loss, or other limits in the Store terms; some games also require a linked publisher account. An inactive subscription, removal of the game from the applicable catalog, or other service conditions.
What should you check when locked? Purchasing account and transaction history, then licenses and sharing settings. Subscription status and whether the game is still offered, then licenses and sharing settings.

Do not treat a downloaded subscription title as equivalent to a purchased copy. The download may remain on the console while the entitlement is unavailable.

Secure the account that holds your games

Use a passkey or unique password

Use a passkey where your account and devices support it. Otherwise, create a long, unique password that you do not use anywhere else. Sony specifically warns that password reuse increases risk and points to a password manager or passkey as ways to maintain good credential practices.

Turn on two-step verification and save backup codes

With two-step verification enabled, sign-in requires a code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app, depending on the method you select. During setup, save the backup codes in a secure place that you can reach without the registered phone. A saved code can help you sign in if the phone is lost or unavailable.

  • Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
  • Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.

If you lose both the registered phone and the backup codes, Sony says identity verification is required to recover the account. Do not wait until an emergency to check that your backup codes are readable and stored safely.

Protect the sign-in email

The account email is central to online recovery. Keep that mailbox secure, use its own unique credentials and make sure you can still receive messages there. If you cannot access or remember the email address, Sony directs users to its support assistant rather than attempting improvised recovery through unofficial services.

Reject unsolicited help requests

Do not follow unexpected messages claiming that your account was reported, suspended or selected for an offer. Sony warns about scam messages that ask you to sign in, disclose account details or scan a QR code. Navigate to official PlayStation account or support pages directly instead of using a link supplied in an unsolicited message.

Be careful on shared or public devices

Avoid signing in on public, borrowed or otherwise untrusted devices. If you must do so, sign out when finished and remove any saved credentials. Sony provides remote sign-out guidance for situations in which you can no longer access a device.

Understand checkout-password compatibility

Where supported, Require Password at Checkout adds a confirmation step for purchases. Sony notes that this setting is not compatible with accounts using passkeys. Check which sign-in method your account uses before relying on checkout-password protection, and never treat it as a substitute for securing the account itself.

Recovering a PlayStation account

When you still control the email

  1. Choose Trouble Signing In? on the sign-in screen.
  2. Select Recover Your Account.
  3. Follow the recovery messages sent to the account email.

Use only official PlayStation recovery pages reached directly. If you see an unfamiliar sign-in ID, online ID or password change, treat it as suspicious activity rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.

When a passkey is unavailable on your usual device

If another device has a passkey using the same verification method, Sony says you can use that device to sign in and register a new passkey. This can restore a usable sign-in path without waiting for the original device.

When email or passkey access is gone

If no usable passkey device or account email is available, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. The same route applies when someone changed the sign-in ID, online ID or password without your recognition. Be ready to provide the details requested for identity verification.

When two-step verification blocks sign-in

Use one of the saved backup codes if the registered phone is unavailable. Without backup codes and without account access, Sony says identity verification is needed. Keep transaction details available because they may help support establish which account made a purchase.

Console Sharing and Offline Play

PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play lets other users on one enabled PS5 play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account owner, including when that console is offline. Some PlayStation Plus benefits can also be shared. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time.

This feature is designed for household use and offline play; it does not turn the license into transferable ownership. The purchasing account remains important even when another local user launches the game.

If you no longer have the old PS5

Sony allows remote deactivation of all devices through Account Management. That all-device action is limited to once every six months, so use it carefully. After deactivation, sign in on the PS5 you intend to use and configure Console Sharing and Offline Play there.

If another household user cannot start the game

  • Confirm that the purchasing account is signed in and has enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5.
  • Confirm the game was downloaded by, or is available to, the purchasing account.
  • If the title came through PlayStation Plus, check the subscription and catalog status.
  • Do not delete the purchasing account to solve a local-user problem; account closure can remove access to the underlying purchases.

Why a purchased PS5 game is locked or missing

Work through these checks in order. Each one eliminates a different cause, and restoring licenses cannot replace account recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the signed-in account. Make sure the current user is connected to the account that bought the game.
  2. Check transaction history. Confirm that the purchase completed on that account and that you selected the intended edition.
  3. Check PlayStation Plus status. If access came from a subscription rather than a purchase, verify that the subscription is active and the game remains available.
  4. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play. If another household account is trying to play, confirm that the purchasing account enabled sharing on this PS5.
  5. Restore licenses. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony says this does not affect saved data and identifies padlock icons, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes as situations where restoration may help.
  6. Use game-start troubleshooting. If the lock or error remains, follow Sony’s troubleshooting guidance and contact support with the error code, the steps already attempted and the transaction details.

Restoring licenses is a troubleshooting operation. It does not recreate a deleted account, undo an account compromise or move a purchase to a different account. If the purchasing account itself is inaccessible, use the recovery process instead.

Common mistakes that cause avoidable access problems

  • Buying on the wrong account: Check the active user before checkout and verify the confirmation afterward.
  • Closing an old account: Keep the account that holds purchases open, even if you stop using its original console.
  • Deleting a linked publisher account: Some third-party games require that account to remain linked.
  • Redeeming an incompatible voucher: Match the voucher’s country or region to the Store account.
  • Assuming a subscription game is purchased: Check whether the entitlement is from PlayStation Plus and whether the catalog still includes it.
  • Relying on one recovery channel: Keep the email reachable, save two-step backup codes and maintain a passkey or other usable sign-in method.
  • Trusting a support message: Ignore unsolicited links and QR codes; open official support pages directly.
  • Expecting sharing to transfer ownership: Console Sharing and Offline Play enables use on one PS5 but does not change the license holder.

A durable buying checklist

  1. Confirm the purchasing account and its country or region.
  2. Open the matching local Store and inspect the exact PS5 edition, included content, release status and price.
  3. Choose a locally accepted payment method, wallet balance or region-matched voucher.
  4. Complete checkout and verify the transaction in the account history.
  5. Download while signed in to the purchasing account.
  6. Set up a passkey or unique password and enable two-step verification where appropriate.
  7. Save two-step backup codes and secure the account email.
  8. Keep any required publisher account linked.
  9. If sharing at home, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the intended PS5.
  10. Retain the account; do not close it to clean up an old console or user profile.

Following these steps cannot guarantee uninterrupted access under every future Store or service change, but it prevents the most common account, payment-region and entitlement mistakes and gives you a clear recovery path when something goes wrong.
