Buy from an official retailer or a marketplace with a clear buyer-protection process, check the individual seller and listing, and pay through a method with a documented dispute route. No channel makes every listing safe: verify each seller, especially when buying sealed packs or paying for a pre-order.
Choose what you are buying before you compare sellers
Individual cards and sealed products carry different risks. For a single card, scrutinize the seller’s reputation, the listing’s condition description, and whether the photos show the actual card. For sealed booster packs, packaging can be hard to authenticate, so compare it with official product images and treat a dramatically low price as a warning.
Pokémon says counterfeit cards are often see-through when held up to a bright light, but this is only a clue, not a complete authentication test. If a card seems suspect, Pokémon recommends asking a shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate it. Pokémon’s counterfeit-card guidance also warns that fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from real ones.

Where to buy: assess the channel and the actual seller
Pokémon Center Support identifies Pokémon Center, its automated retail vending machines, and limited-time deals with major retailers such as Target and GameStop as official sales channels for its items. Pokémon TCG cards are an exception to its restriction on smaller-retailer merchandise because they are distributed through existing mass-market retail partnerships. That guidance describes channels; it does not authenticate a third-party marketplace listing or guarantee a particular seller.

Marketplaces can offer useful protection, but their policies apply to their own transactions and can change. For example, TCGplayer’s Safeguard policy covers orders that do not arrive or are not as described, including orders from Direct and marketplace sellers. For suspected counterfeits, it provides a separate claim process requiring the card to be received for review; confirmed counterfeit cards receive a full refund. Check the current policy before relying on its terms.
Before buying, check:
- Seller and fulfillment: Review who is selling and shipping the item, the seller’s track record, and any available transaction history.
- Listing and condition: Read the exact description and condition, and look for photos that let you assess the item rather than relying only on generic product imagery.
- Shipping and recourse: Confirm delivery terms, the stated return policy, and how to open a claim or dispute if something goes wrong.
- Price: Compare the total price, including shipping, with a plausible retail reference. A low price is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself; Pokémon specifically cautions against packs priced dramatically below suggested retail.
Keep the conversation and payment on the marketplace when doing so preserves its protections. That is a practical risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that a transaction will be problem-free.

Pay in a way that leaves a dispute path
Prefer a payment option with a documented process for disputing a transaction. Avoid a seller who insists on moving payment off-platform or asks for a direct transfer if that would remove your ability to use marketplace protections. Never treat a discounted pre-order as safe merely because a seller promises future delivery.

ScamShield Singapore’s January 2026 bulletin describes Pokémon card pre-order scams involving advance deposits and bank transfers. It advises using secure payment options and avoiding advance payments or direct bank transfers to the seller. This warning is specific to the Singapore examples in that bulletin, not a measurement of scam risk everywhere. ScamShield reported at least S$958,000 lost since October 2025 to e-commerce scams involving Pokémon trading card sales in Singapore; that dated figure is not a global estimate. Inspect a card or sealed pack without treating one clue as proof
Individual cards
Hold a suspicious card up to a bright light: Pokémon says counterfeit cards are often see-through. Because this is not a definitive test, do not rely on it alone to authenticate a purchase. If you remain unsure, take the card to a specialist trading-card shop for an assessment.
Sealed packs and other products
Compare the packaging, text, and artwork with official product images. Pokémon cautions that fake booster packs may be difficult to discern and that a price far below suggested retail is a serious warning sign. TCGplayer’s published guidance also flags spelling or grammar errors, mismatched set references, and anime imagery as possible red flags. These are warning signs, not a universal authentication guarantee; no single visual check establishes that a pack is genuine.

What to do if the order is missing or not as described
- Save evidence. Keep the listing, order number, payment record, seller messages, delivery information, and photos of the item and packaging received.
- Start with the marketplace order page. Contact the seller through the transaction and follow the platform’s official claim process. For TCGplayer, its current Safeguard page says eligible missing or not-as-described claims should be raised within 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date; it recommends contacting support within 48 hours of identifying an issue. Check the page for current deadlines.
- Use the counterfeit process for a suspected fake. If the purchase was through TCGplayer, submit a counterfeit claim and send the card as directed for review. The policy says confirmed counterfeit cards receive a full refund.
- Decline extra off-platform payment demands. TCGplayer says sellers may not request additional payment after a completed transaction because the market price changed. Do not send additional money outside the original transaction to resolve a dispute.
