Buy physical gold only after you can verify the seller, the exact metal content, the complete delivered cost, and the ownership or storage arrangement in writing. Compare the dealer’s selling price and buyback price with the current spot price, then screen coins or bars against official specifications. Weight and dimensions can reveal obvious problems, but they do not prove composition; doubtful pieces need qualified independent testing.
What buying physical gold safely actually involves
Physical gold is sold as bullion coins, bars and, sometimes, products marketed as collectible or “semi-numismatic” pieces. A bullion coin is valued mainly by its weight in a specified precious metal. Proof and uncirculated products are different: their price may depend on limited mintage, rarity, condition or age rather than only their gold content.

- Metal: a stated gold weight and product specification that you can compare with an official source.
- Economics: a transparent premium over spot, all fees and a written buyback price or formula.
- Custody: delivery to you or identified third-party storage with ownership, insurance, access and withdrawal terms.
These checks reduce risk; none is a guarantee against fraud. U.S. guidance is the main basis for this article. Dealer regulation, taxes, delivery rules and consumer protections differ in other countries.

Choose a product you can identify and resell
Coins listed by the U.S. Mint
The United States Mint distributes its bullion coins through authorized purchasers and secondary retailers rather than selling them directly to the public. “Authorized purchaser” describes a role in the Mint’s distribution system; it does not replace your own comparison of price, reputation and terms.

Mint pricing reflects the prevailing metal price plus premiums for minting, distribution and marketing. A familiar government-minted coin can be easier to compare against published dimensions and features, but recognition alone does not authenticate a particular coin.
Bars and other forms
For a bar, compare the stated fine-gold weight, refiner or mint, serial or assay documentation (if supplied), dimensions and packaging. Do not confuse a refiner’s status with a guarantee that a specific bar is genuine. Keep the item description and every document supplied with it.
Do not pay a collectible premium accidentally
Ask whether the price is based on bullion value or on a collectible claim. High-pressure pitches for “rare,” “exclusive” or “semi-numismatic” products can obscure commissions and make resale harder. If your aim is exposure to gold rather than collecting, compare products with the same actual gold weight and straightforward specifications.
Compare the real price, not the advertised price
Understand spot, premium and spread
Spot is the cash price for immediate delivery. Retail bullion is generally sold above spot and bought back below spot. The difference between your purchase price and the dealer’s buyback price is the spread; fees can widen the gap further.

Compare like with like: the same gold weight, purity, product and condition. A smaller coin may carry a higher percentage premium than a larger one, while a packaged or collectible item may have costs unrelated to melt value. Do not treat a dealer’s quoted buyback price as guaranteed until the written conditions are clear.
Why a below-market offer is a warning
The Mint advises extra scrutiny when a bullion coin is offered below the current market price. Recheck the seller, the coin’s published weight and diameter, the stated gold content and the complete invoice. A bargain that excludes delivery, storage or a large resale spread may not be cheap.

Investigate the dealer before sending money
Verify the business identity
- Record the legal business name, physical address, telephone number and the name of the person selling to you.
- Check how long the business has operated and look for independent complaint information, not only testimonials on its own site.
- Ask what licenses or registrations apply and verify claims with the relevant authority. A salesperson who cannot substantiate a licensing claim is a red flag.
- Request a written quote identifying the exact product, gold weight, price, premium, fees, delivery method and buyback terms.
- Pay only through a method that produces a transaction record. Keep the quote, invoice, payment confirmation, correspondence and delivery record together.
“Retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level” is the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority warning; it does not mean that no state or other laws apply. It means you cannot treat a retail dealer as if federal oversight had already validated the offer.
Recognize pressure tactics
- Unsolicited calls, emails, social-media messages or pop-up sellers urging immediate action.
- Claims of guaranteed returns, guaranteed wealth preservation or a risk-free hedge.
- Pressure to move retirement savings quickly or to buy an expensive “collectible” product.
- Vague answers about where metal is held, who owns it or how it can be withdrawn.
- Requests to rely on a salesperson’s credentials without verifiable documentation.
Pause when any of these appears. A legitimate seller should allow you to compare offers and read the contract without a countdown or personal-pressure script.
Screen a coin or bar for counterfeit indicators
Use the manufacturer’s or Mint’s specifications
For a coin, obtain the official specification for the exact product and issue. Check its stated weight, diameter and key visual features. A digital pocket scale and a caliper can help you compare those measurements. Record the measured values and the scale’s resolution.

These are screening tools, not authentication. A counterfeit can imitate a coin’s appearance or dimensions while using a different metal. Matching weight and diameter do not prove that the interior is gold, and a package or capsule can affect what you measure.
Inspect the whole item and its paperwork
- Compare lettering, dates, edges, design details and finish with official reference images and specifications.
- Check that the stated weight refers to gold content, not merely the gross weight of a package.
- Look for inconsistent serial numbers, damaged seals, altered documents or an assay card that does not match the bar.
- Be suspicious of a seller who will not state the weight and precious-metal content or will not provide a written guarantee.
The U.S. Mint recommends checking published specifications and whether the seller guarantees weight and precious-metal content or a third party has certified the coin. It also cautions buyers to use care with classified advertisements and online forums.
Escalate uncertainty to an independent professional
If a measurement, appearance or document is inconsistent, stop treating the item as genuine. Use a qualified independent precious-metals professional and ask:
- Which testing method will be used?
- Does the method test only the surface, or can it identify the material through the item?
- What can the written result establish, and what limitations remain?
- What credentials, independence and chain of custody does the service have?
The cited consumer guidance does not establish one universal do-it-yourself test or identify a particular retail assay provider. Do not rely on a single home test as proof of authenticity.
Understand LBMA features and Good Delivery terminology
The London Bullion Market Association describes recognized bar-security features as physical features intended to establish a bar’s identity and help verify authenticity, similar to a bar passport linked to its Gold Bar Integrity database. Its specifications and process apply to eligible bars. They do not establish that every retail bar carries such a feature or that a feature eliminates the need for independent checking.

Good Delivery is a wholesale standard for bars qualifying for the London market. LBMA’s guide says a standard gold Good Delivery bar is approximately 400 troy ounces and explicitly notes that a one-ounce retail bar cannot itself be on the Good Delivery List.
Therefore, these are different statements:
- “The refiner is associated with an LBMA-listed Good Delivery refiner.”
- “This small retail bar is a Good Delivery bar.”
The first may describe the refiner; the second is not established merely because the bar is one ounce or carries an LBMA-related reference.

If the metal is delivered to you
Confirm the shipping method, insurance during transit, delivery signature requirement and the process for reporting damage or a mismatch. On arrival, compare the item with the invoice and record its condition. Store the invoice, packing record, assay documentation and photographs securely.
Home-held metal may not be covered by a standard homeowners policy. Ask your insurer rather than assuming coverage, and consider the security and privacy consequences of storing valuable metal at home.

Before paying, obtain the exact storage location, legal owner of the metal, account records, recurring fees, insurance scope, access rules, withdrawal or delivery charges and the circumstances in which you can take possession. Ask whether your holding is specifically allocated to you or represented only as a general entitlement, and require the contract to say so plainly.

Be wary of claims about overseas storage or a facility that cannot be independently verified. CFTC materials describe fraud involving unclear or nonexistent storage. No particular vault or insurance provider is validated by the guidance used here, so verify current custody arrangements and coverage directly.
Keep a complete ownership file
- Product name, fine-gold weight, purity and serial number, if any.
- Invoice showing price, premium, taxes and every fee.
- Payment confirmation and delivery or storage receipt.
- Assay or certification documents and your inspection notes.
- Written buyback, withdrawal, cancellation and insurance terms.
Extra risks in a precious-metals IRA
A self-directed retirement account adds custodian, fee, commission and tax issues to the ordinary risks of buying metal. CFTC and FINRA warn that some sales pitches use high-pressure tactics or expensive collectible products and that rollover rules can be complex.
Before changing retirement savings, request a complete fee schedule, identify the custodian and its services, understand how commissions are paid, and obtain the tax consequences in writing from a qualified financial or tax professional. Do not assume that placing gold in an IRA guarantees preservation of wealth or outperformance of a diversified portfolio.
A practical purchase sequence
- Define the objective. Decide whether you want bullion exposure, a collectible, personal possession or managed custody.
- Select comparable products. Write down the exact coin or bar, fine-gold weight and specifications.
- Collect multiple written quotes. Include premium, shipping, payment, storage, insurance and buyback terms.
- Investigate each seller. Verify identity, address, operating history, complaints and any licensing claims.
- Check the economics. Compare the total delivered cost and the stated buyback price against spot for the same weight.
- Choose custody. Put delivery, storage location, ownership, insurance and withdrawal terms in the contract.
- Inspect on receipt. Compare weight, diameter, features, serial numbers and paperwork with official specifications.
- Stop if uncertain. Do not resell, melt or alter a doubtful item; seek independent professional testing and preserve the transaction records.
When to walk away
Do not proceed if the seller refuses to identify the metal’s weight, will not disclose the total cost, promises guaranteed returns, pressures you to decide immediately, cannot explain storage, or offers a price that is implausibly below the market without a credible explanation. Walk away from financing or rollover arrangements that make it unclear whether metal was purchased and delivered, who owns it, or what you must pay to exit.
The CFTC and FINRA reported in 2024 that, over the previous decade, the CFTC had charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals to customers, alleging more than $500 million in fraudulent sales. The figure is an allegation total in that bulletin, not a measure of every dealer or of the value of gold itself.
Final decision rule
Buy only when you can independently answer five questions: What exact gold weight am I receiving? Why is this the total price? What will this dealer pay to buy it back? Where is the metal and who legally owns it? What evidence supports authenticity, and what will I do if that evidence fails? If any answer depends solely on a salesperson’s assurance, keep your money until the documentation and verification are complete.
